Damn... bought these last week from Argos for £60. Mini review:

I pull these off charge (micro USB) at 6am to leave the house. Play audio books for my walk and train commute for an hour each way, then music about half the time I'm in the office. Turn them off when I get home about 7pm. I've not had a low battery warning yet, so I've got no idea how long they last. There's a detachable analogue audio cable in the box, so I guess you can use them unpowered, but I've not tried.

They are pretty comfortable and not too hot. I wear glasses, so sometimes they start to pinch the top of my ear against the arm, but I just have to lift my glasses a little. They fold flat, so I'm not worried about putting them in my rucksack. I don't think they'd take a serious beating, but I'm not being delicate with them.

Noise cancellation isn't Bose "I've gone deaf!" standard, but it's not bad. It cuts out much of the low thrum of the train and the higher pitched rushing noise of the air conditioning. General background chatter in my open office is less distracting, but the cancellation isn't as strong on the mid-range. Turning the cancellation on isn't massively impressive, you just get a mild hiss. It's more noticeable when you've had it on for a while, but no audio playing and you switch it off. It doesn't kill outside noise, but it definitely takes the edge off.

Audio quality is perfectly acceptable. Far better than the cheap in-ear Bluetooth headphones I had before. It's pretty balanced, so don't expect thumping bass. They aren't particularly bright or particularly warm, just middling.

I've not had any issues with the Bluetooth either. Connection with my S6 has been perfectly reliable and predictable. Certainly better than my car! The controls generally work well. Volume, on/off, noise cancellation and the play/pause buttons are easy to use. Only the next/previous track buttons are hard to work. The microphone appears to be OK too.

If they were wired passive headphones, I'd expect to pay £40 for them. For them to be £35 and Bluetooth, it's a bargain!

Well for anybody concerned, I've had these since yesterday morning and have listened to them with a wide variety of music for about 8 hours. The build quality is good for the price and the comfort level is high providing a reassuring grip to the head. Sound quality is very impressive with flac files. Bass is taught, with a good sense of rhythm to complicated basslines, soundstage is relatively broad with instruments well arranged, never sounding muddled. Midrange is clear without being excessively pronounced. Highs are also well presented without becoming edgy or uncontrolled. They have great timing and energy and have yet to become uncomfortable for long periods of listening. The noise cancelling copes well with low frequency interference. Bluetooth connection is rock solid. All in all I'm extremely impressed with them :smile:

To clear up some confusion, the Argos headphones are SHB8750NC, not the SHB8850NC sold by Currys and reviewed by What Hifi. They apparently have 32mm drivers as opposed to larger 40mm drivers on the 8850's.
I bought some from Argos last week for £69.99 but will be returning them as I couldn't resist the draw of the Sony MDR-1000X, which are considerably more expensive, although £60 cheaper than the high street if purchased at Dixons Tax Free at an airport.
The Philips are a bargain at this lower price, but the Noise Cancellation is poor compared to Bose and Sony top of the range models, and in particular seems to amplify voices rather than reducing them. Also, as they are on ear, they are not as comfortable as over ear headphones.
To the poster asking if their dad could use them to listen to the TV; that will only work if you have a Bluetooth TV that can output sound to external Bluetooth speakers or headphones, and not many TVs will do that.
As for sound quality, for the price they are fine, but my main wired headphones are Sennheiser HD600's, and the Philips clearly can't compete. Having said that, for most people, the sound will be more than enough, with nice firm bass and reasonable detail retrieval.
For £35 though, these are a bargain, as long as you can resist the draw of Bose QC35s or the Sonys.

Appears so, yes. The Amazon price is a seller so should be disregarded. At the end of the day a set of Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones for £35 with built in mic is a steal.

No they're bluetooth and there will be an audio delay assuming you have a bluetooth soundbar or your tv is bluetooth you need wireless headphones with a base, these connect to your TV and then the base transmits to the headphones. They're brilliant and well worth getting I use mine all the time. You can get cheap RF ones for about £30 but if you're willing to splash the cash the Sennheiser RS160 - 165 and 175 are worth looking at. There's also the Philips SHD8600 8700 and 9000 might be able to get some off ebay. They're better than the RF one's but not quite as good as the Sennheisers but a v good compromise on price.

Per Philips, specs are the same. Both 32mm drivers. Small weight differences, though. Perhaps one is a manufacturing revision. Colour looks slightly different, more black on Argos ones.

These are great. Bought them and picked up and using them now. So much better than what I had before and with £10 Quidco and using a £10 Argos Voucher they were only £15. Amazing!

The noise cancelling is alright at just reducing the background ambient noise a bit but the main thing is the wireless. Hooked it up to my work laptop in seconds via bluetooth and listening to Spotify now is sweet.

My Quidco also just tracked at £1.05, looking forward to that upping to £10. Hot Deal!:smiley:

​Actually according to the Philips website the 8750 and the 8850 both have 32mm drivers, physically the only difference seems to be the grey covers, sonically I believe they are identical.

The last Argos cashback I received took 2 months from purchase to confirmation (basic account), if that helps anyone decide.

As for the driver size, if you look at Philips websites they give the 8850 as 40mm drivers, but when you do a compare they then say they are 32mm?? I did a search after buying them on Saturday because I was expecting them to be the 8850's. Currys however give the spec as 32mm for the 8850. I suppose only someone with the 8850 box will be able to tell us as it will be on the box.

Listened for about 10 minutes in the office and they do a good job canceling out noice.Quite good sound as well, not as big soundstage nads separation as Bose or Sennheiser but for the price they are great. Workis good with calls as well. And you gewt a small beep when you recive a notification/sms on your phone :smiley:

Hi Just purchased these - great pair of headphones - argos have specified the wrong product number in their question answer which could be a bit misleading. These headphones are definetly the SHB8750NC and not the SHB8850NC_00. Although when comparing the two the specs are exactly the same other than the colour.

They come with a USB cable for charging. Just plug that into a computer or any USB charging plug.

Also I can also confirm the model number is definitely - SHB8750NC.

I've managed to answer my own question. I spoke to Ben from Quidco,, he said if you collect from store by either paying online or reserving, quidco wont pay its in the T&C's apparently. Paying online then collecting I would have expected to pay out so I asked him that question to make sure and he gave me the same answer.

I realise his response was poor, but perhaps he used them with the accompanying cable that comes with them and therefore required no charge. I doubt it though. :wink:

would the noise-cancelling work wired though (without a charge) as the audio device would need to supply the power to it?

The ones I had also didn't need charging immediately and had sufficient charge to use straight away.

Don't get your hopes up about the noise cancelling; it most definitely does not reduce external noise by 97%. I think most of this is down to the on ear design, as there is virtually no passive noise reduction to help the active noise reduction along. I'm wearing the Sony MDR-1000X's as I type this and I can barely hear the television or my wife or the baby babbling. The Philips headphones just couldn't reduce that noise at all, and voices actually sounded worse, although I had read that high tones, such as voices, wouldn't be cancelled out by the noise cancelling. That definitely isn't the case with the Sony or Bose headphones, both of which are over ear and therefore have some passive assistance. Of course the Bose and Sony cost nearly 10x the current cost of the Philips, so as long as you don't try a pair of the more expensive headphones on in your local Currys you won't know what your missing :-)

Seems to be some confusion on the conditions on cashback from Argos. Someone on the Quidco thread quoted Quidco's Argos cashback info:

* Cashback will only be paid on orders paid for online for either Fast Track collection or home delivery, unless stated otherwise.
* Cashback will not be paid on orders reserved online that are then paid for in-store.

So Fast Track might work(?) Delivery would take £3.95 out of the £10 bonus - not so good.

As above, unless Fast Track works it'll have to be delivery which would leave you £6.05 after their standard delivery is take off.

Bought a different pair of phillips headphones last year which was about £40 and returned them straight away. The quality is rubbish and build quality is cheap. It just looks nice to look at but it doesn't do the job.

My old sennheiser HD202 are 10 times better and I got them for much less than the phillips.

picked a pair up a few hours ago, for the money they are great. I really like them. the noise cancelling does not cancel out everything.

but it really does cut out a lot at the cost of a very quiet hiss which is only audible when no audio is coming through the headphones.

Just picked mine up.

Sound quality is serviceable. Pretty standard for a cheap pair of headphones. Overall very good value considering the functionality on offer. They aren't as good a bargain as the RRP would suggest, but they'd be a decent buy up to about £50.

However, they're going back. The blue LED blinks every 8 seconds while paired. This LED reflects off my glasses - really irritating. Shame - I'd have been quite happy with them otherwise.

Maybe a bit or permanent marker, black tape or paint over the led will help. Maybe leave a very small bit visable to see if it's on/off?

Maybe an idea. On further listening I'm not sure I'm happy with the sound though. Clumsy would be the appropriate word. There's a distinct lack of detail and the bass is distorted (or, at times, distinctly lacking).

At this point they're probably going back. Good value at £35, but I'd rather spend a bit more and get something I'm happy with.

The item was ordered and paid for online, therefore there was no opportunity to view or test the item before purchase. DSR applies.

Though that's a fallback position. It isn't obvious that I've opened the package so I'll just ask for a refund.

I bought sone SHB3165 headphones from Argos last Black Friday for £29.99 (also reduced from £89.99) ... they look identical and from what I see are exactly the same spec... the only difference is the product number.

Anyone know the difference as I am truly stumped??

What is the hands free like on these? Does the microphone have a noise cancelling feature too?

Last year I bought some £29.99 headphones believing they were worth £89.99. Those exact headphones are still £29.99 12 months on (and now showing a more resonable RRP of £39.99)

I was duped by some clever initial pricing and blinded by what I thought was an incredible price.

Were they worth £89.99???... absolutely not! Frustratingly I bought 2 pairs like a total mug.

They sound like a 30 quid pair of headphones, sure. But Bluetooth, NFC, rotating cups, noise cancelling. Not a feature set for a £34.99 pair of branded headphones. £50, maybe.

Picked these up earlier. Not bad sound to be fair but when paired to my Samsung TV you can only go as loud as the volume buttons on the headphones allow you which isn't loud enough for my liking. Pressing the volume buttons on the TV does nothing. Probably take back. Decent enough when paired to iPhone On Spotify mind you.

Not sure I agree, yes it's a good price for the feature set but I certainly wouldn't pay a penny more.

Like I said I bought last year's Phillips £89.99 Black Friday headphones... they are worth the price I paid ... £29.99. The feature set is almost identical to these.

It just feels to me like the price is over inflated on purpose.

Picked these up through Quidco as £25 for the features and average sound would be a fantastic price. Alas the sound is very poor for the price point in my opinion.

Without Noise Cancellation turned off the sound feels distant and muffled. Contrast to the What Hi-Fi review, the bass is there but it muddies everything else. The highs are very lacking.

My £6 in-ear Philips buds sound better.

With Noise Cancellation turned on it seems to jack up the bass even further and the bass becomes distorted. And to call it Noise Cancellation is a pure joke. 97% reduction? No chance. Even if that is a legit figure, most of this is done by the pads alone.

Needless to say they're going back. If it wasn't for the distortion I'd have kept them for the feature set, because it is good and they're nice a light and have a very nice design.

Got mine but I am also going to return them. The ear part is made from quite cheap plastic will will eventually crumble away.

Like others, I would rather spend the £30 on a better pair.

How do you return items? I bought them earlier with FastTrack and they're terrible... The noise cancelling is useless, there's a switch to turn it on/off and it doesn't seem to make any difference... Says on Argos that once opened, you can't return unless faulty?

send me a pm I got some good earphones that block out a nutty neighbour who bangs tapsdrops drags creaks non stop and stomps and the earphones I'm using block it out as long as you listening to music or white noise or what ever . I'm looking some something better thou but there are great they have saved me .Got them on a previous deal that went cold bought 3 pairs song noise cancelling headphones mdrex750narm as I use to much in bed and when indoors the slip out a bit now but still do the job u hear some noise when outside some talking on bus but have been in a massive pub and only when took them out I realised how loud it was and it was loud full packed up the pub

I have Bose QC25 wired phones, and fully realise that the sound cancelling and sound/build will be nowhere near those. But these should do for throwing in the car, for the train journey to work.

I already have a pair of Sony bluetooth headphones and these Philips would have been a huge step down.

Took the plunge with these, despite the comments on here am really impressed with the sound quality (using Spotify best quality download) and compares well to the Sony MDR-EX650 I also have. Can't say I really notice the sound reduction too much though but really enjoying walking around the house without catching my headphone wire on something. Quidco tracked at £1.05 so will be having words if that doesn't improve. Also checked with the chap in Argos if I could try and bring back after trying and he said yes, provided was still in original packaging and as new condition - basically provided they could sell again as new.

I have annoyed the wife though who is looking for christmas presents for me and had some bluetooth headphones on the possible list.

Yes using the included cable (Xbox one only the new controller u less you have an adaptor) but only for sound and not mic functionality.

Just tried them out after getting them today. Sound quality is very good, they feel good quality and are comfortable but do squish your ears a little (I guess most headphones do). They do block out a considerable amount of noise but not as effective as suggested but that wasn't the reason I bought it. One issue I have with it is when on bluetooth mode there is a flashing blue light to the front on the right, when your in the dark the flash is quite annoying, I might end up covering it. Overall good buy, especially for the price.

So tempted by these, but only if the sound quality is comparable to my Sound Magic earbuds. As usual I'm left completely confused by people's reviews, with half saying the sound is muddy and distant, the other half saying it's good.

Defiantly not, Xbox has no Bluetooth and PS4 Bluetooth only for licensed products

Well for anybody concerned, I've had these since yesterday morning and have listened to them with a wide variety of music for about 8 hours. The build quality is good for the price and the comfort level is high providing a reassuring grip to the head. Sound quality is very impressive with flac files. Bass is taught, with a good sense of rhythm to complicated basslines, soundstage is relatively broad with instruments well arranged, never sounding muddled. Midrange is clear without being excessively pronounced. Highs are also well presented without becoming edgy or uncontrolled. They have great timing and energy and have yet to become uncomfortable for long periods of listening. The noise cancelling copes well with low frequency interference. Bluetooth connection is rock solid. All in all I'm extremely impressed with them :smile:

People need to remember that they should never rely 100%on Quidco paying out. You're going to need £35 to buy the headphones and wait for anywhere between a month and 6 months for the cashback.

We have had some informed reviews from people who are likely audiophiles. I am not, i have one pair of £30 Sony headphones and a couple of cheap earphones so here is my uninformed review :stuck_out_tongue:

The NC seems pretty ineffective. I have no experience of NC headphones but there is not much discernable difference between on or off with the hum of my dehumidifier 10ft away.

The actual headphones themselves, sound is more than good enough for myself... I like to listening to music but im not one who detects subtle hints of lavender and darkened birch in between rising notes during Bassy songs etc.

They are comfy and feel secure and snug. Potentially they could become uncomfortable if you're wearing them for a while as they are snug.

Sucks there is no case for them

Bluetooth setup was a doddle. My cat is no longer swiping at the cord, these will be great for wearing round the house when cooking and such.

​yes they would I have rf headphones too which have no lip sync issue, but if u stand in path or people passing the sender you get white noise, to use these u need a Bluetooth sender, eBay about £5-£10, just used it very minor lip sync issue but noticeable, it dosnt bother me , very slight, hope that helps

I've been looking at Wireless noise cancelling headphones for my Dad and you won't get a branded pair for less than £80. Yes you can get some 7 day shop one's and brands you've never heard of for £50. Lindy are £80 and they're the best cheapest and then it's upwards for branded. So for £35 potentially £25 these are a bargain for the features. The review on trusted reviews compared them to the Bose 35 that cost £280, how daft is that. The features cost money so don't expect £80 quality sound plus all the features for £80. I'm chuffed at that price I don't need miracles and if I find I really like having NC then I'll get the Bose or the top end Sony version. I haven't set mine up buy my Dad has and in particular he found it really works on lower frequency noise, it completely cut on the noise of his fans on his desktop PC for example but tapping on his glass desk not really.

Bought a pair of these as £35 seemed like a no brainer. Overall really impressed. I'm no audio expert but I love they that are wireless. Audio seems more than good enough and they are comfortable. Josie cancellation is alright, can still hear stuff but I'm classing that as a safety precaution

Mini review:
Sound quality is distinctly average, for a cheap set of headphones. £35 or so.
Sound cancelling is sub par. 50% reduction I'd say, but it does work.
Bluetooth connection is excellent. Great range with solid connection to iPhone 6 Plus.
Wired connection works fine too.
Comfort is pretty good.
Build quality is good and well worth the price.
iPhone connectivity is perfect, with controls working volume, phone, Siri etc all as advertised.

If your TV (or other device) has bluetooth built in, it'll work fine.

If not, you can get an adaptor that makes anything with a headphones socket bluetooth compatible. Something like this:

Bought 2 days ago at £34.99 easy to connect, quality is comparable to Sony's sound magic, noise-cancellation not as good as Bose Quiet headphones but again it's almost a tenth of the price.

*paired & played fine on a oneplus mobile phone, sound quality OK but nothing special, headset grippy can be fatiguing after awhile, paired up fine to my windows laptop but I had bad audio skipping on that setup. I exchanged these headphones the next day

Hi, can someone confirm the noise cancelling function only works on BT and not when using wired mode.
Seems strange as I use the noise cancelling function a lot travelling on planes through the 3.5mm jack and wired.
I'd lose this if only BT option supported NC.

I didn't try myself, I guess it will work the same, wired or BT. But in my opinion, if you want this headphones mainly for the purpose of using on planes, I would suggest to find others more expensive ones.

Don't buy these for noise cancellation, there really is only one company that has nailed noise cancellation on headphones and it's Bose. I've had some Bose QuietComfort, it's remarkable what they do... At quite a high cost though.

Buy them if you like the sound. For me, I went for the JBL E40BT for wife, 16 hours on wireless and very good sound for £45. These Phillips headphones look far to busy from a style perspective due to buttons.

Yeah it's quite aggressive branding. Prefer the look, personal preference though... Then again, I'd put JBL / Harman above Phillips when it comes to sound any day of the week. Reviews on these Phillips headphones are pretty dire.

Work great with my iPhone, answer calls easy, and was told the mic was very clear.
My only gripe is, the bass isn't very powerful.

These are a steal at this price. Build quality feels excellent, NFC pairing is instant and the sound quality is very good (especially if you have an Equalizer app to adjust things in Spotify). Noise cancellation will never rival Bose but I'm hoping it helps me sleep on a long flight to Thailand on Friday.

If anyone else has a Vodafone Smart 7 Platinum the added bonus is that the black carbon effect on the headphones is a great match to the back of the phone!

Yeah, if you continue to use them at the gym you'll find those ear pads will soon start to stink due to sweat. I'd advise not if you care about that sort of thing.

For the price the build quality and features are great. The noise cancellation isn't great but does a good job of reducing the rumble on public transport and from air conditioning: enough to allow me to have the volume a good few steps down from normal.

My biggest complaint is the position of the bluetooth indicator light. It right in my peripheral vision, and for someone who wears glasses it reflects back into my eye. Also acts as a bright flashing light when walking at night. Every 8 seconds it flashes and there is no way to turn it off.

Hi everyone! My Monster N-Tune headphones broke this evening (photos on my Twitter - same username as HUKD - if anyone's interested the aftermath!)

How do these compare to the Monster N-Tune headphones in terms on sound quality? The Monster's were very good in my opinion, though I like the wireless capability of these a lot, and the portability. Sound quality has to be in top condition though as I like to listen to a lot of Metallica!
