42p a coffee? That's a rip off.

Coffee beans are one of the cheapest things you can buy (after a tea bag).

Those coffee pods aren't easily recyclable either (most local recycling collections don’t take pods because they are made up of a mix of materials) and instead, they end up in landfill waste. There are billions of these pods dumped into landfills every year.

how do these compare to a tassimo?
nige182 to jiraiya
27 Nov 16 #8
I am wondering the same, I want one with a good variety of drinks but not limited to just coffees, I also want chocolate which rules out the Nespresso I believe, but Currys have both the Tassimo Amia and this for a similar price. Leaning towards the Tassimo myself but would like other opinions on the quality of the drinks, price of pods and if any cheaper compatibles are available.

I had a gusto for a year and then changed it to the tassimo. The coffee is better with tassimo and you can get costa. I know or Jacobs espresso and use fresh milk, heat it in the microwave and then have the perfect latte

well that was my question to the men who were introduce them he said that the pressure (bars) in these is a lot higher than the tassimo one which is nearly like Costa kind of pressure in their coffee machines

Alot of the good tassimo drinks and bundles are always out of stock on the site, its rare we order now as you have to spend £35 for free shipping and they hardly ever do discount codes, we just buy decent granular coffee instead now as thats all it is in the pods.

I did see somewhere buy this machine for a pound when you buy the pods for around 30 pounds.. hmmm now when was that?
Gives me the idea that the pods are way to expensive then the machine in the long run? I like the coffee though. But would I spend that amount of money? Or buy coffee beans ground them and make my coffee in a 15 pump pressure machine at home??

From looking around, some sellers list these just as refillable, others say that each refillable pod has 50 uses. Not sure if they are quantifying it due to some degradation of the material or for another reason.

Thanks, if bought today and registered, in addition to the £10 voucher there is a deal running until midnight today (28th) of a free box of chococino caramel with any order of six boxes. Combining all these offers means the machine plus seven boxes would be a grand total of around £44 depending on boxes chosen. Rather tempting now.

I bought one from eBay Tesco for this price and have been really pleased with it. The boxes for 3.99 do contain 16 pods so for drinks that include separate milk such as cafe macchiato or cappuccino that's 8 servings. The cafe au lait and expressos contain 16 servings. I would buy one or two lattes from costa etc every day so am saving a small fortune by making my own

This says it's automatic on Currys but this model is a manual version isn't it?? I found the coffee isn't as nice as the Tassimo although it's cheaper the buy online than Tassimo. The milkdoesn't leak either like the Tassimo pods did when delivered. I'm in the fence with mine and may still return as it spews milk in all directions.

This is my issue with pod machines. I love the idea of them but they're poor value in the long run. The most expensive bags of coffee are usually around the fiver mark for 250g. 250g will give you 27 shots of coffee. 19p each and that's for the expensive stuff. Buy beans in bulk and you can half that to less than 10p a cup.

Yes, you can use refillable capsules, but you're really compromising on the quality of the coffee if you do it. I'm not saying that there isn't a place for capsule machines, but if you're at all concerned about saving money and/or quality of the coffee they're absolutely not a good choice. The only thing they offer is convenience.

If you have the time and inclination to save money and have better coffee, in my view you're best served with a big initial investment for a good coffee machine. If you can't manage that, then a hand grinder + moka pot + milk frother can be had for under £50 in total and will produce ridiculously better coffee than any pod machine. Switch the moka for an aeropress if you want something a bit easier to use.

I only bought one for the Chai Latte I don't drink coffee lol but it gives me my chai fix when I can't be arsked to get the pan out and do it on the hob so it is mainly for convenience , time saving and no pot to wash

It is a pity they don't do the skinny chai version though as it is highly calorific so is one of my 'treats'

I reserved one of these at Currys but when I went to collect they didn't have any left in stock. I persuaded them to just knock £5 off the black one, which is exactly the same machine but they've decided to charge £5 more for a different colour.

If your local Currys has ran out it's worth asking them to either order one in or just reduce the price on the black machine. Needs manager approval, but given they have bloody loads of black machines left they will probably be willing.

Edit: Also, I tried the coffee and it tastes fine, there are probably cheaper ways of getting a fix, but I think part of the appeal is that it is a lot easier to clean than most other machines. I stopped using a percolator as it was just a chuffing effort each time.

30 Nov 16 #52
Just going to put this here for anyone who bought a machine, enjoy a free sample: https://www.dolce-gusto.co.uk/preludiochallenge

Thanks, annoyingly it is now showing out of stock in my local online in red anyway so I cannot reserve. I had reserved one a few days ago but couldn't get there before closing so left it, now I may have to wait for another deal or hope stock comes back in online in a few hours.
russthewomble

Just because you can get a coffee cheaper than 42p, that doesn't mean that 42p for a coffee is a rip off...
frakison
1 Dec 16 1 #57
Exactly, I would place a hefty bet that Picard has an iPhone, or iPad or some other "non-base" product which cost 100x the cheapest option which would do the same job.

I guess we all do it, I see people buying £5 coffee's at Starbucks and think they are fools, but then I don't think twice about going into the food hall and paying £6 for a baked potato and a drink...
Picard123
1 Dec 16 #58
It's a rip off because most of that is the cost of the packaging. Coffee itself is very cheap. It's only retailers and chains like Starbucks that mark it up for an insane price. You buy a £3 coffee from Starbucks for example and less than 10p of that is the actual cost of the coffee.

Buy your own coffee and make it yourself, whether its instant, filter, or your own ground beans. That's part of the experience! It's also cheaper and you don't add to the billions of non-biodegradable pods dumped into landfills each year.

2 Dec 16 1 #66
I share Dansax's confusion. I've never heard of "retrofit" meaning anything to do with copying. I've only heard of it in the context of adding new technology to something older (like installing an MP3 player into a car which was originally fitted with a CD player would be to retrofit it.) Dictionaries seem to support this usage rather than anything to do with copying.

Just to clarify - do you mean that Nespresso machines can use non OEM pods? (ie you can use fake / copy pods from other manufacturers?)

The lack of openness of the pod standards, and environmental issues are amongst reasons I'm never tempted by pod products. Refillable and standardised pods would help with that for me.
nige182
2 Dec 16 #67
Funnily enough I thought the same as you, but in terms of refillable pods, I have only seen those for the Dolce Gusto machines. And aftermarket pods exist for various makes, eg. Café Royal pods for Dolce Gusto machines, or Café Pod which make them for Nespresso or Dolce Gusto machines. In fact a Google search for Dolce Gusto compatible pods reveals loads of different sites and brands... the problem is that none of them appear much cheaper than the original Dolce Gusto pods.

2 Dec 16 #68
For what it's worth, I have seen people queuing in Selfridges basement (yeah sure I shop there all the time  for specially filled coffee pods apparently made up on premises from their choice of beans.

I didn't even bother to look, but I'm guessing the cost is quite high.

Not for aluminium you won't. It's too dispersed to justify the massive financial and energy costs of mining a landfill for such a tiny return. No commercial company is going to excavate a landfill when they can go and create a bauxite mine in Malaysia and make vast profits in doing so, albeit at the cost of destroying the rain forests, killing the wildlife, displacing the local population and poisoning their water.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-35340528
Picard123
2 Dec 16 #71
Yeah, I agree. Not only is it cheaper, but part of the pleasure of a good coffee is the pleasure in actually making it yourself and creating your own blend. I can understand the convenience of using pods from time to time, particularly if someone was an infrequent drinker, but to press a button for some machine to squirt hot water into a plastic/aluminium pod and paying through the nose for it just seems daft if you're a frequent coffee drinker.
dean_brfc

How do you get 'proper' coffee without a machine? I do filter coffee but it's nothing like what you get from cafés in Europe (which I am using as the baseline for 'proper' coffee!)
wildecat
3 Dec 16 #73
Make sure you buy an automatic one - a manual one is a PIA.

I use Grande Caffè Crema pods (yellow packaging) for coffee along with the same amount of milk. Pop in the microwave for 50s and you have a reasonable latte.

It means I rarely takeaway coffee from Nero and Starbucks...saving the pennies.

I bought the previous version of this machine a couple of years ago (another deal from this great site). Unfortunately, and after fairly limited use, it has started burning the coffee no matter which pods or heat settings I use. This has been described on forums but no one knows exactly why. Could be an issue with the thermostat I guess. Guess it's time for a new machine, probably will buy this one.

Thanks OP. Heated.

the thing is you get proper coffee shop taste and aroma with these.
there is NO instant coffee that can even get close.
basically you get the same/very similar taste, quality and aroma you get from the coffee bought from a coffee shop.
so 42p a cup is worth it as normally in coffee shops you have to pay £2+ a cup.
I don't have this model but have a basic £30 Bosch Tassimo and since buying it I can't even stand the best instant coffee's taste.
you make a cup of coffee with these and the whole room literally smells of delicious high quality coffee.
good luck having that experience with those instant coffees.yuck.

nope,I'm not.
but I've got a little advice for you : read all the positive reviews all over the internet (about taste and quality of these vs instant coffee).or better yet just buy one (after all it's only £30 and a 16 pack coffee pod will cost £4), try it,see for yourself and then jump to the comment section and bash a product without even trying it.
