eBuyer have this fairly capable card reduced to £239.99, which is lower than it's ever been on Amazon according to 3 Camels. Yes, it's more than in the USA, and way over the anticipated £199 retail price, but with the pound having dropped so much against the dollar this year it looks a good deal to me.

Having posted this, Amazon currently have every other 8GB RX480 listed as one per customer and the MSI Gaming X card has a stupid high RRP of £299 in the listing. Could they be planning a Black Friday week Lightning Deal on this card anyway?

Saturday 19th November 9pm £239.99 on Amazon too.
As Amazon have now price matched this card with Ebuyer, I'm going to buy two from Amazon this evening. I'd already put £500 credit in my account expressly to get these cards and £239.99 is good enough for me now with the guarantee of having them for Christmas, plus Amazon CS if there's any issues with either of them.

Amazon price back up to £254.99 again, and they have the GTX1060 at £309.99 - ouch!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01H01E4CQ/?tag=pcp0f-21 sapphire one for a tenner cheaper, great value for performance.
currently between this and a 1060 for me

I'd pay the extra tenner for the MSI card, personally. The reference cooler is very hot and loud, whilst this is the quietest RX 480 around. You'll also get a better overclock out of this one thanks to the lower temperatures, unless you're willing to crank the fan up to 100% on the reference cooler (and deal with it sounding like a leaf blower).

yeah totally agree, just an alternative in case this one sells out really.
I'll be watching over the weekend to see if either this or the 1060 drops beneath £200

Great price for an 8gb 480.

Was looking at this a few weeks back, as I want an MSI card to match my new MSI board, but a few reviews put me off. Think I'll go re-watch them and see what the faults were. Kind of convinced myself I want an MSI gaming x 1060 6gb but it's £60 more than this.

Voted hot.

Holding out for some nice Nitro+ Black Friday deals, but given no built in 3D support it will probably end up being cheaper for me to go for a 1060

3D support? What

17 Nov 16 #8
I like to game in 3D on my 3D monitor, which NVIDIA supports natively in the drivers. As far as I can find, you still have to buy something like TriDef 3D for Radeon cards, unless that has changed recently, which effectively adds £30 onto the price of the gfx card

I'm not entirely sure what AMD HD3D means, other than a stamp saying "this card is powerful enough to produce 3D images". It's not an actual implementation to make it happen.

I feel I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with these card deals. My R9 285 is pretty much golden at 1080p apart from games that need the extra VRAM (2gb card). A lot of cash but still a good price for the card. Its a shame the RX cards are still so much more than their GTX counterparts in the UK.
CAL23
17 Nov 16 #14
How does this compare to a GTX 970?
hamzahuk to CAL23
17 Nov 16 #15
Got an extra 4gb Vram, and in DX11 slightly beats the 970, but in DX12 ive heard its performance will be a big jump.
lindajane102361 to CAL23
17 Nov 16 #16
gud better best compare to 1070 if u buy 2 480 they beat 1080 in some games and u can still save £200.
Seanspeed to CAL23
17 Nov 16 #20
Better on average in *newer* games. More vRAM gives ability to run better texture settings, too.

If you have a GTX970, it's not something I'd upgrade to, though.

it's beast for the price 1080 is abut £600 and 1070 around £450 now u can get 2 rx 480 for £400 and beat 1080.

There are thousands of PC games out there. Showcasing just one game is a terrible way to judge general performance of a card.

And there's many reasons to not want to do a dual-card setup. Lack of support, framepacing issues, limited scaling, extra heat, noise and power draw, etc.
jamie19916

Sapphire is reference; it will be slightly slower and a worse cooler. Definately worth the extra 10.

Damn.....a mate just offered me his 2x 980ti's. Knowing him, they'll have been polished, hugged, kissed and given individual beds with soft fluffy pillows every night since he bought them. he hasn't mentioned a price yet, but I'm thinking the price for the pair will be similar to this deal. Decisions decisions......
......or is it an easy choice?

18 Nov 16 1 #31
Right, so you are suggesting the 480 can be bought for 200, yet you are in a thread that is hot for a 480 8gb selling for 240.

One 1070 is cheaper and better.

And that's ignoring the elephant in the room.

The 1060 6gb stomps this card in everything but Doom and 2 DX12 titles.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1060_Gaming_X_3_GB/29.html

So, I don't see how you can suggest 2 480s instead of a 1070 or even 1 480 instead of a 1060.

At the VERY least, the 480 and 1060 trade blows, but that's before we consider overclocking. The 1060 6gb has lots of OC room.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/graphics-cards/nvidia/geforce-gtx-1060?sPage=1&sSort=3

You can find the 3gb for 180 and the 6gb for 233. And if you wait for the black friday deals, you'll find even better deals (for both cards!)

Also, if you already have a 970, there is no point upgrading to the 1060 or the 480. Too close!
Snakeyes646
18 Nov 16 #32
I'd choose this over the 1060 just my 2 cents.
lkahalestoyer
18 Nov 16 #33
I got the 4gb sapphire which is very quiet.
As for nate's 1060 stomps over this card, looking at the review he linked it seems fairly even bother cards have good/bad games, arguably 480 is marginally better longer term assuming dx12 gets full support.
89quidyoucantgowrong
18 Nov 16 #34
I think it's been established since the summer that there have been an awful lot of partisan reviews for both cards, paid and unpaid. If we accept that there are fanboys on both sides and that real life noticeable differences in performance for similarly priced cards in each camp are marginal, there's no point in arguing for one brand over the other. I'm not a fanboy. In my mind, the RX480 8GB specials and GTX1060 6GB are roughly comparable. There are some practical considerations, e.g. power consumption, cooling, noise, etc., but I'd be happy with either card from a quality manufacturer at the lowest price. Ideally, less than £200.

Unfortunately, my two sons are fanboys and they are dead set on this particular card this Christmas for each of their gaming rigs, so I'm watching it. I still haven't bitten with Ebuyer at this price. I'm determined to see out Black Friday week with Amazon, just in case I can save a few more quid on a lightning deal.

There's also freesync to consider. In case you get a 144 hz monitor freesync is gonna be handy and gsync is just too expensive. That's the reason i chose rx480
hamzahuk
18 Nov 16 #35
Theres no way a Rx 480 crossfire beats a 1080 on anything at all, heck even a crossfired fury x just about hits that performance.
7800gtman
18 Nov 16 #37
Crossfire fury x doesn't beat a 1080? Nvidia fanboy alert! Depends on the game and resolution. For newer games on dx12 and vulkan the crossfire fury x wins hands down - the fury x crossfire beats two sli titans in some of the newer games so how would one 1080 beat both. For older games the 1080 has the edge. So its a lot more complicated than saying one is better than the other as it depends entirely on the game. Your fanboy logic is bit good advice.
stefw82
19 Nov 16 #38
main reason i went for the rx480, was the freesync also.

I've ordered this card from Amazon @ £245.

I have been hankering for an EVGA 1060 SC (or a 1070 if I could get it < £350 from UK retailer) but the price on this card is too good to pass up with the rebate plus Civ 6.
Tomaquet to DragonChris
1 Dec 16 #48
£45 is a great price!

I spoke to amazon yesterday and they said it didn't come with the Civ6 code. I bought it anyway instead of through ebuyer as I'm happier if I have to return/replace anything. (The Civs arent my sort of game anyway - although could have tried to sell it)

Still, £196 (after rebate) is still a great price!
89quidyoucantgowrong
1 Dec 16 #47
Yup, with the rebate and Civ6, it's a very persuasive offer. I just returned my two from Amazon yesterday, after having two more delivered to different addresses from Scan. They emailed the Civ6 codes within an hour during the order processing. Looking at the cashback offer from MSI, I'm not sure how likely I am to get it on both, but I'll give it a go. Having to wait 15 days after purchase, having to submit the claim within 30 days and then and taking up to ten weeks to process, plus a load of exclusions doesn't look good.
DragonChris
1 Dec 16 1 #49
Seriously? That's a real kick in the pants if it's the case. I tried looking on AMD rewards for verification to see if Amazon took part or not and found nothing. I did however find someone stating it should be possible to redeem game through the AMD site anyway, so I'll find out later when I get home and find my password for the site to see :P
