You need to speak broken English, just as I do - that's the only way they will understand you. Proper English sentences confuse them - "Sire, it's been an enormous pleasure in doing business with such a respectable person as yourself, I am delighted with the shopping experience and will definitely buy again. One little thing before you take your well deserved rest - could you please specify lower value on my package, so that the evil people at HMRC would not fine me? TA muchly!" They can't understand that. I usually go. "WRITE LOWER VALUE ON PACKAGE, NO MORE THAN 20 DOLLAR. KTHNXBAI". Never had any problems.

How does this compare to an amazon fire stick for Kodi?
Pedro4jj to ministrymason
18 Nov 16 1 #9
I don't own this box but a similar model, and it is far better than my firestick, firestick is so laggy and crashes far more often, also the fire stick is a lot more limited to which builds you can use because of its smaller hard drive space, I would go for the box everyday of the week

I own this, works great for the price, need to google bits about kodi, add couple of add-ons and here you go. 4k works with LAN connection, over WiFi you'll struggle, recommend also buying a mini keyboard with this, very helpful...
dealcatcherer
18 Nov 16 #14
wifi will always be questionable, no matter what any manufacturer says, the hubs are usually to blame so unless you have your own network or have fantastic WiFi already...
bleachershane
18 Nov 16 #15
Gone for this, cheapest I've seen for the spec and my first order from Gearbest... Hope everything goes smoothly!
As well as KODI, etc, I'm hoping I can get VLC up and running on this to play DVD backup rips and HD files from hard drives.
Cenobite to bleachershane
18 Nov 16 #16
You don't need to use VLC, unless of course you prefer to. Kodi will play the files quite happily.
M0nk3h to bleachershane
18 Nov 16 #17
Kodi has support for that, why would you need VLC?

The wi-fi in this box has known issues and is appalling compared to other boxes.

Wireless or wired?
bleachershane
18 Nov 16 #18
Good stuff, I'll need to look into that, just that I've been using VLC on a PC for years so used to it. I take it Kodi is a decent quality media player?
bleachershane
18 Nov 16 #19
I didn't realise Kodi was a fully fledged media player, I've been using VLC for years and heard it can play DVD files (I want to backup up all my physical DVD discs to a hard drive and eventually get rid of the discs).

But now you've got me wondering about the wireless issues. I could easily use it in a wired configuration, I'd probably set it up like that anyway, any known issues with its wired performance or should I cancel my order... If I can?
dealcatcherer
18 Nov 16 #20
was not aware of the specific issue with that one, mine is wired, I still think that most boxes do struggle with Wi-fi due to the source of the WiFi itself... people should be aware of that, this is a problem for most people across all devices...

Currently use a firestick, interface is laggy and crap but when its working its fine.

Only concered about the wifi really, but people say the same about firesticks and wifi on that works fine for me
M0nk3h
18 Nov 16 1 #24
Wired performance is fine, wireless just isn't the best. I would imagine a wireless adapter could possibly solve that issue.
bleachershane
18 Nov 16 1 #25

Pardon my ignorance. Is this a MiniPC set up to stream video and generally work as a media box?

I can understand it will stream video locally, say over the LAN to your NAS, or from the SD card. Does it stream TV from internet sites? Is that what these devices are frequently used for.

Bloody cheap.

Yes. RJ45 is listed in the spec.

Yeah, it's very good. Used to be XBMC, Xbox media centre, which evolved to Kodi.

Cheers, I've been looking around for an Android box but looking more into the specs rather than what I can run on it. As long as I can plug in a hard drive, play files and it lasts a few years, that's all I want. Streaming, 4K, etc is a bonus.

The only difference would be if you have Netflix or Amazon Video subscriptions. The Fire devices are approved by these streaming services for HD streams, whereas all generic boxes will give you only SD streams no matter how capable the hardware is.
Yeah, I had the original M8S and Kodi streams work fine in HD, same for iPlayer and catchup services etc but with Netflix you only get a piddling SD stream so I purchased a Fire box from here instead.

Can't believe people are talking about 4k - surely the vast majority of content is P2P streams - not really 4k terrain is it?
Even the Netflix 4k streams are shoddy low bit rate stuff that barely looks any different from 1080p, or is it me?
TimJWL
18 Nov 16 #64
Remove the Kodi build supplied with it, put fresh Kodi 16.1 on it and a decent build. Even better - put SPMC on it - it's far better than Kodi as it's specifically made for android. I paid £10 more and got from Amazon in case of issues, that's your choice. As a developer and builder and I have no problems with this box.

As long as "priority shipping" doesn't involve a courier like DHL or UPS etc you should be OK to sidestep the import charges. About another £15 if you're hit with charges.
Paypal likely offers the best protection at this pricepoint, although if you have an issue and post about it on this forum, Gearbest will likely fall over themselves to assist.

It's lot easier now, download the image from the s905x thread on libreelec forum, burn to a micro sd with the tool on the libreelec wiki, put the card in the box, boot to recovery and it'll go to libreelec instead. The cnx link was installing on internal mem that removes android.

18 Nov 16 #97
Be aware of limitations these boxes tend to have which means Kodi cannot switch refresh rates on the fly. It means that if your box is set to display say 50hz then playing anything other than 50hz video will result in stuttering/jumpy playback. Some people don't mind but it bugs the hell out of me. Happily there are other firmware builds you can use but you need some technical knowhow to do it. One i would suggest (if all you want is Kodi) is Libreelec.

The popular Logitech keyboard+pad for these sort of boxes is the K400/K400+ but can be a liitle pricey. Similar from other manufacturers are cheaper. Or consider one of the smaller rechargeable kb+pads from around £8. For all options look for your preference related to UK or US keyboard layout, and backlit or not. Most have a USB dongle that will occupy one of the box's USB sockets; bluetooth versions are less common. Random example of US layout from £9/£10 without/with backlight dlvd ex-UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01F4WP9B8/

It can come down to personal preference wether you want a fire stick or Android box.

If you have Netflix & watch HD movies, then from what I understand, you can't do that on Android box as Netflix don't support it.

I have both an Android box & firestick & like them both for different reasons.

I found it slightly easier to get Kodi & a build onto the box more so than firestick as you have side load Kodi onto firestick.

if you have Amazon prime then you can access the prime TV movies etc thought firestick easily. More difficult to get it on Android box.

Never had it on my computer so can't comment on that.

I would probably go for an Android box over firestick it I HAD to choose but again it's just my opinion. :sunglasses:

Proper English sentences confuse them - "Sire, it's been an enormous pleasure in doing business with such a respectable person as yourself, I am delighted with the shopping experience and will definitely buy again. One little thing before you take your well deserved rest - could you please specify lower value on my package, so that the evil people at HMRC would not fine me? TA muchly!" They can't understand that. I usually go. "WRITE LOWER VALUE ON PACKAGE, NO MORE THAN 20 DOLLAR. KTHNXBAI". Never had any problems.

wifi sucks on this. 2.4ghz is a more stable wifi connection but slow (usually used for further distances from router). Its a great deal and i own this box but the wifi is not great.

try buy a dual band box with the 5.something ghz band as well and i think it will be fine. as much as i love the box wifi disappoints me.

it does have ethernet which is okay-ish. my wifi at home is an overhyped and overrated 100mbps internet speed connection and my box is 1 wall and 4 meters away from the router

Kodi advise against getting any s912 box due to a number of bugs and there is no libreelec support and they've said it's unlikely there ever will be.

I have ordered this one when it was around this price few weeks ago.

When I first started it it was having problems, it wouldn't communicate well with my tv and would send it 1080p video even though it is only a 720p panel.

Also kodi kept crashing, but quick google sorts that one out.

The included remote is really bad, it works but has very weird selection of buttons and sometimes just refuses to press enter and very deep and squishy buttons, I would definitely recommend an air mouse.

apart from these quirks after playing a bit with it, it is a nice box and kodi comes already setup with most of the best channels I would give it a 4/5 and if you want something cheap for watching movies it is perfectly adequate.

I appreciate your point, but a few people who care about those things will be able to easily install a port, which I believe is already available. And having in mind how long it take shipments from China to arrive to UK, we'll have support for s912 by that time

local company boxes is small life since after some time they dont update firmware. Thats why big companies survive.

Small life? If it works it works and a boxes reliability is not about updates.

I too have one (after a waiting 27 days for delivery) so beware if you live in the UK.

The box itself has no wifi issues and after messing about with the config settings and firmware updates, I can confirm it's an good box and runs very smoothly.

If this does come with Kodi just delete it and download again, trust me the installed version will be buggy as hell and contain lots of defunct add ons. Also go for a different launcher, I use Nova and it's grand.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before in this thread, I just haven't read every comment.

Better getting an illuminated wireless/keyboard - this is on Best Offer though this seller ignored my Offer last time - currently at £8.59, from China, though http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291879748366

£9.85 if you want it from the UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neoteck-Wireless-Keyboards-Multimedia-Raspberry/dp/B01M246Y5F or £9.09 (not tried this version though) https://www.amazon.co.uk/niceEshop-Wireless-Portable-Keyboard-Touchpad/dp/B01M7MRO2K

I've got this box and its pretty good but has a couple of flaws which for some people may cause some bother.

1. As others have mentioned the wifi is useless, so you need an ethernet connection which does work flawlessly.
2. For some reason kodi passthrough of surround sound over spdif is buggy with occasional dropouts, so if your planning on using this on a home theatre setup I'd steer clear.

The remote on mine works fine but I've also stuck a mouse on it so the eldest can play games and do basic school homework.

This model is an updated model, as far as I can see, the Youtube review I commented on a few posts ago suggests Wi-Fi is improved (Post #153) http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/mini-m8s-ii-4k-smart-tv-box-amlogic-s905x-quad-core-processor-2gb-16gb-uk-plug-25-2549245?p=29204159

I've just installed VLC and MXPlayer, neither will play sound. I found a link which said I need aio.1.7.32.rev1.zip, but that seems to be out of date? MXPlayer won't use it anyway
solid
19 Nov 16 #169
I've heard that spmc (a kodi fork, specific for android) sorts out these issues. You can. Get it from the play store
shadey12
19 Nov 16 1 #170
i use MX player, I find it better than vlc.
AndyRoyd
19 Nov 16 #171
For clarity: lack of sound is unrelated to any ISP-level filtering. AIO codec package is to enable AC3 & DTS for MX Player, and my boxes have no issue with AC3 & DTS & MX Player + AIO, although my go-to player for local files is Kodi (I have no real interest in streaming). Not sure what you mean by "MXPlayer won't use it anyway." What audio type is causing you an issue? Cheers.
Shard
19 Nov 16 #172
In MX player there was something for installing codecs, it didn't like the file.

Since then I've tried kodi again and now it's playing the files? It's almost as though it's been updating in the background

I've got an android tablet (tab pro) which MX Player just works on, no changes necessary, so luckily I've also got a bluetooth mouse and keyboard lying around which makes it much nicer experience to work with

Thanks for all the help but until it stops working and I have a more concrete question to ask I'll assume it's ok for now. I'll retry the streaming at another date

Can't comment on this Android box but nige182 (thanks) mentioned on another thread that a USB Xbox One controller worked on his Nexbox A95X - though apparently it doesn't with the Beelink Mini MXIII (the one I have). Maybe someone can confirm about this one (Mini M8S II 16GB).
