From tomorrow (should be midnight tonight) Microsoft Surface deals should be live. This has to be the cheapest we've seen these at on both models. For this price, you have to buy both the surface and the typecover for a total of £599.99 on the m3 model and £699.99 on the i5 Model.

I think the real big deal is the i5 model, to be honest. But either are really good value at the mo. Take your pick.

Hit "Get Deal" > Select the model you want out of the 2 in the offer > Add to basket > On next page scroll down and tick the type cover you want > Review & checkout > Pay

MS Office Sub - as a side note - Office 365 Home is £20 off a years sub when buying with a surface tab, BUT there is already £20 off in their sale and should stack. £39.99 for a year is pretty decent. Office can be found Here

Dimensions - 11.50 x 7.93 x 0.33 in (292.10 x 201.42 x 8.45 mm)
Weight - m3: 766 g / i5: 786 g
Display - Screen: 12.3” PixelSense Display
Resolution: 2736 x 1824 (267 PPI)
Aspect Ratio: 3:2
Touch: 10 point multi-touch
Graphics - m3: Intel HD graphics 515 / i5: Intel HD graphics 520
Ram - 4GB
Ports - Full-size USB 3.0
microSD card reader
Mini DisplayPort
Headset jack
Cover port

Not really.

The computer you linked does not function as a tablet; the keyboard is always attached and cannot be removed. It also has a far worse GPU for any light gaming, but it does have a larger SSD, RAM and a slightly CPU.

Also the screen on the one you linked sucks compared to the one inside the Surface Pro 4, which has one of, if not the best screens in a portable computer on the market. For the light workload I use a laptop/tablet for, the Surface skus are far better machines.

Surface screen and ability to detach as a true tablet > your laptop.

Your right, your numbers don't add up. Sounds like a FanBoi jelly over a better tablet at a cheaper price.

New iPadPro's sell on eBay for 87.75% of their new price.
New Surface Pro 4 sell on eBay for 101.53% of their new price.

Used iPadPro's sell on eBay for 73.87% of their new price.
Used Surface Pro 4 sell on eBay for 88.69% of their new price.

From these stats you can see that the deal posted here is actually cheaper than new sellers on eBay, and that used Surface Pro 4's currently hold their value better than iPadPro's compaired to this deal.

Sorry for the boring stats below, but I like to back my stats up with a bit of research.... As with 90% of statistics are made up on the moment, and as yours seemed fishy I just did some quick research, using comparable details of 4Gb RAM, 128Gb Storage, 12+" screen, so lets look at some real world statistics backed up with current market data. :-

New price:-
iPadPro 12.9 - Apple store £819
Surface Pro 4 - Microsoft store £699

eBay (new) price (taking the mean of the cheapest 3 inc postage of each to offer a better statistical analysis):-
iPadPro - (£656 / £749.99 / £750) = £718.67
Surface Pro 4 - (£699 / £710 / £719.99) = 709.67

eBay (used) price (again taking the cheapest 3 inc postage):-
iPadPro - (£560 / £620 / £635) = £605
Surface Pro 4 - (£598.98 / £619 / £644.99) = £620.99

So looking at current (as of 30 mins ago) pricing new vs 2nd hand new/used I cant see where you get your Surface Pro 4 second hand figures of 20% of the purchase price from... this would mean eBay would have them for sale for £139.80. Of cause I will stand corrected if you show me where I can buy a 2nd hand Surface Pro 4 for £139.80, hell I will buy 10 of them.

So lets put this into percentiles to assist:-
New iPadPro's sell on eBay for 87.75% of their new price.
Used iPadPro's sell on eBay for 73.87% of their new price.
New Surface Pro 4 sell on eBay for 101.53% of their new price.
Used Surface Pro 4 sell on eBay for 88.69% of their new price.

nota bene:
If we take the price of a Surface Pro 4 outside of this deal,at the normal selling price, the statists change. Based upon a £849 price point and USED values, 73.03% vs the iPadPro at 73.87%, so its still hardly that much difference.

Flea

Like others have said, not great on a lap, not the best tablet (too heavy).

Excellent thin portable PC if that's what you're after. I'd recommend the M3 version as it has no fan. The i5 one I have sounds like a jet engine when it gets going.

Yeah, I think Microsoft really needs to make a proper Surface laptop. The Book is a nice piece of kit but ultimately too expensive for what it is. The Pro 4 also a good bit of kit, but actually I've seen a lot of people struggle to use it in laptop mode unless they've got a decent amount of space to use the stand - it's not really ideal for use on small train tables or fold down plane tables tbh.

Still it's a ton better than the iPad Pro, which is basically still an iPad and doesn't really do the job of replacing your laptop unless all you do is browse / use apps.

I was thinking of waiting for the Surface-Book or a higher spec version, however thinking about this more... Would the i5 version be fast enough to use regularly daily. Nothing more intense than office programmes and web browsing.
Could be some decent size spreadsheets and I also have a fair amount of Windows open. Was definitely looking at 8gb ram... But not sure if it's just overkill.

Any advice from the techies on here? Not used windows 10 yet and not sure how much of a resource hog it is

Heh, I take your point but as someone who enjoys gaming I'm not willing to spend that kind of money on something that doesn't have a decent Gpu and hard drive space.

That said, if you're not bothered about gaming or storage then it's an excellent but very expensive option.

I need to replace my iPad Air 2. How does the Windows OS work with fingers? And what about apps. I mostly use my iPad for internet but do use some apps like banking, tv, Netflix etc. I assume you would use internet explorer or whatever it's called these days for that.

Regarding the M3 - it depends what you want. AFAIK the m3 is fan less so will be quieter. I have the macbook retina with M3 and it runs world of warcraft with no issues. If it gets too hot, the processor speed is throttled.

I have ordered an I7 surface pro however as the M3 wasn't suitable when editing large images.

I see the listing from MS you're talking about, however I wouldn't be surprised if it's wrong - the Surface Pro 4 (all variants - m3, i5, i7) come with the pen as standard in the box. The Surface 3 did not, and was an optional extra, however the Surface PRO 3 did come with it.
As far as I know all PRO variants of the Surface line have come with a pen accessory (originally Wacom driven in 1 & 2, then N-Trig in 3 & 4).

I would be very surprised if they removed it from the box just for an amazon listing.

Curry's are being equally obfuscating, as their £729 deal for the i5 (now down to £699 I believe) included the TypeCover - however a deal right beside it in store for more money said it included the TypeCover and Pen - if you took this deal you would come home with two pens!!

It's not helped by the fact that the pen can be purchased separately (as it works with the Surface 3/Pro 3 and is an upgrade over the pen that came with the Pro 3) in different colours and with a nib kit to change the feel of it, whereas the bundled pen comes only in silver and has a tip preinstalled to feel like a HB pencil. As it can be bought separately I imagine retailers not used to the variants (or interested/bothered) assume it's normally separate, or are trying to fleece un-expecting purchasers hoping they will not return it!

Cheers,
Andrew

@magicpork interesting. I might go for the Amazon deal and see, waiting till tomorrow in case another deal comes along. If it does come without the pen then buying the kit from MS store that comes with the nibs would bring it back to £598, so win win!

So it doesn't look like any deals are appearing for the i5/8gb/256gb ;_; Not sure whether to bite the bullet and go for the 4gb ram option now... I'm not sure that will be able to cope with Civ VI! (which admittedly I can just play on my gaming rig desktop, but I'd like a portable option)

Primary usage would be as a PDF reader (huge full colour RPG books) and writing device, with some light strategy/rpg (think Baldur's Gate level stuff, not Skyrim) too. What does everyone think?

How does this option compare to the HP Spectre 360 4129 i7 which can be had for ~£760 with 10% off for new Very accounts and £100 cashback from HP? (Might be another 7.7% quidco in addition?)

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-spectre-360-4129na-mpn-x5x71ea-abu-plus-100-cashback-from-hp-958-79-very-2562175#post29330561

Or there is the i5 version of Spectre as well:

tempted but naaaaaa
apple ipad pro I think

It's all about the second hand resale value on ebay

this 20% of its new price
ipad pro 50% of its new price

that's why apple win

even though this is a good bit of kit

the numbers just don't add up

Just FYI anyone ordering - shipping for the i5 model has been delayed. I ordered yesterday morning, and they shipped the type cover but the Surface itself still says 'processing' on the website. I contacted Microsoft, and the guy told me that due to massive demand they are under stocked and don't know when they'll be getting more in. He couldn't even tell me whether they would be able to ship next week, just that I had to wait for email confirmation from Microsoft. So, the order is still 'processing', with no way to know when it'll be arriving. If you're thinking of going with this deal, expect a wait!

How did you get for £629 I.e. 10% off? Is that still on?

No, for a day or so PC world eBay had the i5 for £629 instead of £699 which was price on the main website. Plus extra nectar points and cash back from amex made it a decent deal.
