The DLC packs are actually pretty good too, more tracks and characters, worth investing in as well.

They are not that much cheaper than the Wii U which comes with a portable screen device, free online and has a small but impressive and worthwhile library of exclusives.

That would be the GamePad to play strategically so you'd know what items your opponents have. Or the Pro Controller.

Just get the Switch instead in 2017. Nintendo is going to re-release Mario Kart 8 "Remastered" with all the content MK8 has gotten and new stuff too.
A WiiU isn't worth buying at this late in its lifetime.

Worth bearing in mind that a Switch version of this may be coming as indicated by the First Look. If so, potentially DLC would be included in the Switch version. This offer is likely still worth it for many, it's just something to consider.
