Most other retailers seem to be selling this for £949, and they are going for more than £850 on ebay, so, ignoring the recent price hike, and the usual Apple haters, this looks to be about the best deal around for this model at the moment.

EDIT - use code LAPTOP10 to get 10% off Argos price of £849. Also there is a possibility of 10% Quidco as well.

thanks to auniyahaya for the heads up on the code and increased Quidco.

Well that was expected - I come onto this thread to take a look and all I see is people arguing in the comment section. This site really has gone to the dogs. Arguments galore. It's ridiculous. No need to argue like a group of immature kids. If you like the price and product - vote hot and buy it if you want it. If you don't think it offers good value, vote cold.

The comment section is best used for help/advice/non-abusive reasoning etc. Calling someone stupid results in them calling you stupid, then you retaliate etc No one wins....

With that being said: I think this is a pretty high price for what it is. Ironically, i'm typing this from my Macbook Air (same exact model) but I got mine from the Apple store about 1.5 years ago and I got 'free' Beats headphones (£100 RRP I believe). The 128gb SSD isn't up-gradable - so you're stuck on it. Same with the RAM. Graphics card isn't good enough to play more than very basic games. If you buy this, you'll be buying it for the long battery life (it does last a good 5-7 hours depending on usage), web browsing, maybe the odd virtual machine (virtual box) and coding using Xcode. If you're not a programmer and you're considering dropping 849 of the Queen's finest, i'd strongly urge you to see what else is available for this kind of price. The 128gb is extremely limiting. This Macbook Air has become my 3rd/4th bit of kit I use when I want to browse the web or run a quick virtual machine and do some testing - make of that what you will. It's a very well built device, it's light, but would I recommend it? Not unless you're a developer. I could go on, but you get the point. If anyone has any further questions please feel free to ask.

i've had enough of this mac-bashing....
god, people can be so short-sighted in the face of high short-term payout over long-term cost!

tight machine, fluid UX operating system, plug&play integration with other apple products and good probability of long-life dayone-like performance with little maintenance required by the user.

yes, macs are expensive, because they work effortlessly and consistently. is paying £300-500 less worth the hassle of a much poorer UX. heck no if the thing's going to last me 5-10 years.

by the end of one mac's lifespan i'm sure a lot of these naysayers' own PCs would have had to a)upgrade multiple hardware components b)buy a new PC just to keep up with their OS's resource hungry lifestyle.

Just because the latest Ferrari contains the most up to date hardware, doesn't automatically make it a better ride than a 3 year old BMW.

Maybe, maybe not! But that's what makes the world go around. I have a rolex watch which isn't worth the the sum of money that I paid for it because one could argue that a Seiko could do the job at a fraction of the cost..... But it is an investment with the value increasing by £1k in 17 months of ownership. Now vote for discount and not on opinion!!!

both were bought online. the first one i collected from my local Sainsburys collection point, the second was delivered to my house, so if they get stroppy, I reckon I should be ok with the distance selling regulations. Just wondering whether it would be best to return the first one to the Sainsburys collection point rather than an Argos store?

Such an infuriating morning with Argos Customer Service! Bought for £849 on Thurs and then saw the LAPTOP10 promo last night so figured rather than buy again I would contact them in the morning to see if I can return and the same laptop and buy again.
Spoke with CS online who contacted the store to confirm and set off only to be told at the store that the LAPTOP10 has been introduced for Black Friday and as the price had now increased to £949 it's cheaper to keep the purchase at £849

I explained that I had it in the basket last night at £849 with the promo code applied but just hit a brick wall!!

Apparently Laptops aren't part of the 30 day money back guarantee (even though mine is still wrapped in cellophane!)

That's just fallacy. You are creating an argument by stating that windows machines are more likely to break down than apple machines and won't last as long. This may have been true once, but not today. If you have been using your Apple machine for 5-10 years then I can see why you don't understand. Windows 10 is a light, highly compatible operating system (universally so, even with Apple products, and much more compatible than OSX with anything) with good potential battery life for laptops. Even the Edge browser has been developed to be light to run, and is. What you pay for when you buy an Apple machine, as with many branded products, is the name. Apple's name just costs quite a bit more than others.
Don't be fooled. Having repaired personal electronic devices for a while now, Apple products break down in the same manner and frequency as every other device on the planet.
joe94
19 Nov 16 2 #92
Absolutely, we can compare this laptop to equivalent Windows laptops and see clearly that this machine is overpriced. There is nothing in the 13" macbook air that makes it special enough to charge nearly a grand for it. A 1440x900 screen and 128gb SSD for this money is crazy. Here is a much better spec'd HP ultrabook for £650: http://www.very.co.uk/hp-envy-13-d008na-intelreg-coretrade-i5-processor-8gb-ram-256gb-hard-drive-133-inch-laptop-silver/1600020529.prd? The Apple is over priced by about 50-60%.

I don't think it matters in this instance, the point was that most people aren't going to be upgrading multiple components on a laptop - and memory would be simple to do. And for modern desktops, it's not nearly as necessary as they claimed.

Us old school kids still refer to a "PC" as a *Windows* based machine (laptop or desktop). It was always "PC or Mac" but that may have changed over the years.
Ashe
19 Nov 16 #89
You *do* realise we're talking about a laptop here?!

And for desktops, considering the relatively small speed increases in x86 CPU's since the second generation of i3/i5 processors, there is no compelling need to upgrade the CPU for anyone who bought a half-decent PC in the last 5 years, unless they really want the best, or looking to game heavily. And memory can be upgraded cheaply and easily (well, on a PC at least!)

But really, 1440 x 900? The other area they really skimped on is the 128gb ssd, but I'm sure most laptop users won't need much more than that.

Once again, not interested in your opinion on anything other than whether this is a hot deal for this particular laptop. They're not even comparable. Is the after sales support the same? No. Is the build quality and useability the same? No.

All of that is irrelevant anyway because this is a post about a MacBook Air and whether it's cheaper relative to other prices on the market for the same product.

This site means different things to different people so one option is to ignore those who come here for reasons different to your own.
I personally dislike Apple but I’d still vote Apple deals hot if the price is good even if I think it’s still overpriced.
Whilst I usually see little point in comparing an Apple product to a comparable Windows product as most Apple buyers are physically addicted to Apple products like a drug; I mean they just want to use macOS of course, just joking.

It's a better deal for a new laptop. Simple as that. If you can find something better/cheaper that's new, post away. Most normal people are intelligent enough to evaluate different options.

If you just want to buy the Macbook Air, just click on Get Deal and get your credit card out. You can't read the comments and then whine about it because you're too worried that potential Macbook customers might realise that there are better laptops out there for a lower price.

This is totally irrelevant to this thread. If you think you have a great deal for a UX310 then start a thread for it. This thread is about a deal for a Macbook and whether the price is a good price. Otherwise every thread will become full of random posts of related products that are "better deals".

If I'm looking for a Macbook I'll come to this site and use the search function. I'll then look for the best deal. In which case I'm not interested in whether I can buy a related device cheaper.

I could easily trump your deal with a 5 year old 2nd hand laptop running Linux which is a "better deal" etc.

A good deal is one that is currently significantly cheaper than you can buy elsewhere (from a reputable supplier of course).........it's not whether you can buy a similar product cheaper.
Rusty82
18 Nov 16 1 #65
I personally don't buy apple products as I feel they don't represent good value for money, or even close to it, which is my opinion. However, as there will be a lot of people that do and if this is the lowest price that this item is currently available for then I would say that for someone who wants to buy this it is a good deal. They will save money. The nature of this site is to save people money on items that they want to spend their money on.

I voted hot as it will be a good deal for someone, but not for me.

Got this last week, fast and have absolutely no issues. Had a Macbook Pro previously. All well and good posting links to Asus and the like but has it got any resell value in two/three years? Probably not. Apple products retain their value really well and customer service is superb.

I know that generally if I have an issue with any of my Apple products I can walk into the Apple store and either have it fixed or replaced there and then.

Hot.

18 Nov 16 3 #63
This isn't Apple hate, this is just an atrocious deal. Buy any other Apple device if you want, just not this one; if you want thin and light get the Macbook, if you want something more powerful get the Macbook Pro. The Macbook air is fat for its internals, hot and loud under load, and has possibly the very worst screen in any laptop available for purchase today.
ludwig352
18 Nov 16 1 #62
You're not the judge of that. People are asked to vote on whether they think it's a deal, regardless of how you understand the system, it's all about opinion. I think this is an overpriced rip off for mugs, I'll vote cold, but clearly most people don't agree. Opinions.
Picard123
18 Nov 16 1 #61
LOL. So you ARE interested in subjective opinions?

If something is discounted by £50 and is that the cheapest at that time, then does that make it a hot or cold deal? If people say that the screen is terrible, the keyboard bounces and it regularly develops faults, that make it bad deal as a consequence, is that deal hot or cold?

Only someone on the autistic spectrum would think you can somehow divorce comments about the product with whether or not it's a good deal simply based on price.
aljack
18 Nov 16 #60
Look its nice to hear opinions and take advice from people on here but partly the reason this site has gone down hill and that people miss decent bargains is because certain deals are voted cold instead of being voted hot because of opinion and not because of the discount. We are all different and are looking for and willing to pay varying amounts for commodities, therefore a deal should be voted on how decent the discount is. If it was about the cheapest item that got the job done then we would be all wearing timex watches, driving Darcia's, watching 14 inch TVs and going to Blackpool on holiday every year! Unfortunately we live in a capitalist world where people will pay more for something than it's true value for various reasons.

Not strictly true about the hard drive. OWC has brought out replacement hard drives for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 2013-2015, although speeds appear to be down on the supplied Apple drives. Prices are suitably eye-watering as might be expected. What is slightly more interesting is that adapters for AHCI m.2 drives have started to appear online for the 2013-2015 era MacBook Airs/Pros although these apparently are not capable of booting so are of dubious value.

There is some hope that something might come out that does work somewhat better and more cheaply than what OWC is offering right now, particularly as Apple is continuing to sell at least the base 13" MacBook Air and the 13" MacBook Pro 2015 design albeit at post-Brexit prices.

Argos is still selling its Apple notebook range at the pre-Brexit prices for which the discount still works and if the Quidco bonus does too will bring down the base 13" MacBook Pro down from £999 to approx £810 or so depending upon what effect VAT has on the discounts. That might be a better long term buy than the MacBook Air if you are happy to sacrifice a couple of hours battery life and put up with a slightly heavier laptop. You do get a retina IPS screen for the extra £££s. I doubt that Black Friday will give any better discounts so if you are in the market for one of the last half-decent Apple notebooks this looks to be the best chance of a deal on a new one.

What's so great about it? It's just a basic laptop, with an old processor, fairly low res screen, and a small capacity SSD which will get filled up in no time. It's nice enough as a basic laptop but describing it as 'great' is seriously wide of the mark.

Here's what TR for example had to say about the screen:

"The measured contrast ratio of 633:1 is half that of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 (1,215:1) and considerably worse than the 2,326:1 of the Toshiba Kira we reviewed recently. This shows up in videos, where the MacBook looks a little washed out and lacking depth in nuanced, dark scenes in comparison to better screens. This is further supported by an underwhelming 0.5 nit black level, compared to 0.1 for the Kira and a 0.3 average on most laptops in this class. This means blacks look 'greyer' on the MacBook than rivals.

Colours look pleasant enough, but tests show it only covers 59% of the sRGB colour space, much less than several laptops we've tested recently such as the Toshiba Kira (94%) and the Dell Precision M3800 (92%). Colour accuracy is decent enough and an uneducated eye won't be disappointed with what they see day-to-day, but it will disappoint you if you put greater demand on screen fidelity."

What are you? 15 years old or something?

£850 for a laptop like this with two generations old CPU (because Apple like selling old tech to boost their profit margins) and a small 128gb SSD is not a good deal.

You must like getting raped by Apple.

Just because a deal gets voted 'hot' on here doesn't mean its a particularly good deal or that they're aren't better alternatives out there. Most people don't have a clue about the thing that they're voted on.

Chrrye is right. A deal isn't automatically "hot" just because it's temporarily cheaper compared to its rip off original price.

I'm selling pair of stripey pink hand knitted socks. Harrods sell them for £399 a pair.

I'm selling them on my Ebay shop for £349 a pair. Does that make it a hot deal for a pair of socks?

The HUKD temperature gauge (the little red and blue arrow next to each deal) is used by members to show their opinion on the deals, competitions, vouchers and freebies on HUKD. Members vote "hot" for those offers that seem pretty special.

I've had a MacBook pro for my 3 years at Uni with 128Gb. Haven't been anywhere near filling it. Mostly cloud storage, or network storage at home. The laptop is amazing and hasn't missed a beat in 3 years. I've had windows and linux laptops over the last 15 years and none have lasted like the mac.
If you compare this with high end windows laptops it's not expensive.
Picard123
17 Nov 16 2 #28
Nice laptop but £850 for something like this is just nuts.

COLD.
cossy3
17 Nov 16 #27
What are you talking about? I'm genuinely worried for you. The point is that NOBODY has priced matched it and until they do there's no reason why this isn't a good deal.

"That one could find another product similarly specced and functional utility for a different price' - once again you've failed to grasp the concept that this isn't about opinions, it's about hot deals relative to other prices FOR THE SAME PRODUCT. Christ.

Chrrye

You seriously think everyone seeing this deal should go "oh this product is £100 cheaper than it's usual price - HOT"

People have different opinions, this site is designed to capture and aggregate those opinions of 'value'.
Chrrye
17 Nov 16 1 #24
I can just about comprehend that this laptop with an apple symbol on it is £100 cheaper than elsewhere thanks.

Comprehend this: that doesn't make it hot (on it's own). For eg. if someone price matched to this is it suddenly not a hot deal anymore? no.

That one could find another product similarly specced and functional utility for a different price (be it double the price or half the price) is not irrelevant to the heat of this deal.
cossy3
17 Nov 16 1 #23
You haven't got a clue what you're talking about have you? If this product is £100 cheaper than anywhere else, that is not subjective or judgement, it's fact.
Chrrye
17 Nov 16 #22
Judgements are subjective. 'Relative to other price points in the market' is (even major) part of the value judgements occuring but not everything.
cossy3
17 Nov 16 3 #21
'Good value' is subjective; this website isn't here to judge value, it's here to judge hot deals relative to other price points on the market. So it is you that is laughable .
Chrrye
17 Nov 16 4 #20
No, it's not.

Warped understanding of HUKD and the concept of 'good value'.

Also, it's literally all opinions - I don't know how you could get any other idea of what is going on

Ive had the 128gb version for over a year and still have 82gb of free space.
All depends how you use them but at least the Air has room for expansion with the card slot.

I've had 128gb for over 5 years. All depends whether it's your main computer or not.

don't think I'd want to buy from a company who are based in Hong Kong (despite the .co.uk), and have shocking reviews on trustpilot if you ignore the ones they have written for themselves.

OK deal for an OK laptop... Not voted either way.

This is hot deals not hot opinions. If price is cheapest around and generally a new low then it's a deal regardless of if people like the product or manufacturer.

It's a good deal - but it looks like the Agros site is having problems at the moment.
Looks like it might actually go hot, which is unusual for an Apple deal. They usually get voted down just for being Apple.

Fair deal so long as you can accept the upgrade limitations.
