They're attempting a third delivery on Thursday.

They are cripplingly useless.

Still no surround sound for me.

anyone able to select front 2 speakers when using leveling features?

Mine just rotates from subwoofer to all, or sometimes subwoofer, rear 2, centre 1, then all.

But never front 2?

Z906 arrived today, my first venture into 5.1. Just a question about decoding, my amazon fire box has optical out and decodes 5.1 but when connecting straight to tv i dont get any sound when selecting 5.1 on plex, is this a decoding issue? Is it resolvable? Thanks

Arrived today. Just set up. Sound just like my THX 5.1 amp, which must be a good thing. Really happy, much better than the X-540 they replaced. Turned the sub up (unlike some suggestions here) and much nicer. Speaker cables seem a little thin but @ 67w per speaker they should be ok. No problems with the setup. Bit of a bargain at £150 all in, considering I paid more for my second hand THX amp. Loud, but not stupidly so.

Looking forward to running these in! Felt like a tiny bit of distortion at full volume, but it's cleaning out, should be fine after a few days.

Nice deal

27 Nov 16 #83
Holy smokes. This system is fantastic, and SO loud! I'm using it for a PC set-up, so I'm pretty close to the speakers and my feet are next to the subwoofer. For £150, this is a worthy purchase! No doubt if you're a serious PC gamer, your motherboard will have an optical output. Get the cable for an extra fiver. No messing about with the supplied cables.

Only downside, if you can call it that, the satellites (speakers) are pretty chunky. Especially the center speaker. I've had to prop it up as my current monitor is quite low and has an awkward circular stand, and had to invest in a monitor stand to hopefully make it more flush with the monitor.

Two thumbs up!
oceanic
27 Nov 16 #82
more like £350 than £175.

AVR = £100
Wharfedale 9.0 x4 = £80
Subwoofer = £150

Already £330 no central speaker, or cabling included.

I'm sure the audio quality would be much better than this thing, but people should be straightforward with the reality of prices, if going down the seperate parts route.

It annoys me a bit, as i thought it was possible to do too due to people saying te the same thing, till i added all the costs up.
Avenger1324
26 Nov 16 #81
These do use the spring clips, but in reality how often do you move a surround sound system? I've had mine for 5 years, and after initial installation to wall mount some of the speakers, the next and only time they moved or had anything done with the cables and clips is when I moved house. Once the connection is made, if the cables and clips aren't moving I don't see an issue.
If you were comparing brand new Z5500 with brand new Z906 for similar money you can have a valid debate. But buying a used set of speakers that are 7-12 years old, versus the successor model with a full warranty? It's your money to gamble with, but I'd go with new and guaranteed over someone selling used on ebay.

26 Nov 16 #80
these are great PC speakers and great price. I don't get the comments about getting an amp instead..
I have these in my office for PC and gaming and a 7.1 yamaha amp setup for living room. You wouldn't buy these for home cinema because lack of input flexibility so they aren't targeting living room speakers.
They are mainly PC speakers but that said they have decoder and optical input...and the sound is just as good imo for music etc as long as you have good soundcard.
This awesome price! heated

26 Nov 16 #79
Cheapest AVR is around £100-120 new (Teac AG D200 for example) and a set of Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 or 9.1, a reasonable pioneer, Tannoy sub or wharfedale SW150 and for £175-250 you could absolutely demolish the sound quality from this set. All depends on space and how much research you are prepared to do. Heated for this set at a lower price than usual though!

26 Nov 16 1 #78
This is bargain.

I have the 2.1 200W version Z623. They are some powerful beasts with genuine low base you don't get from cheaper speakers. The bigger-is-always-better neanderthal in me has been wanting to upgrade to these, but to be honest with you, I rarely go over 60% on my Z623, they're just so loud.

All in all, if you're in the market for some great, powerful, easily a home cinema sound system, go for for these.

I play most of my video from a windows tablet acting as a simple HTPC and as far as i can find out this setup won't work as most TV's don't support HDMI audio pass-through out of the optical and it also doesn't support AAC audio which i'd need. If that's wrong someone correct can hopefully me.

Okay my room isn't that small but I'm just thinking this might be too much or I might just get used to it lol

Currently I have the Logitech LS21 speakers, had them for a while. Quality is average, it does the job. So getting this would or should be a hell of a good upgrade for me but I'm still deciding if I should get this or wait for something else hmmm.....decisions decisions
reddragon105
26 Nov 16 1 #61
I paid £150 for my Z5500 8 years ago and haven't seen the need to upgrade yet. There isn't really anything in it between the Z5500 and this model, so unless you really to replace your Z5500 you're good for now.

It's like having a Michelin star for your restaurant - it doesn't mean it's the best food in the world, or that it's to everyone's tastes, or that you won't find good food elsewhere, it's just that there are a set of high standards established by an independent body who looked at these speakers and said 'Yep, pretty good.' So whether you rate THX certification or not is up to you, it's mostly a point of pride for Logitech, although it does probably mean that they're better than most speakers without the certification.

On a post about speakers? No way!
rev6
26 Nov 16 #60
Room placement, room reflections, seating positions are much much more important. THX has never been a deciding factor for me. This is a decent price though.

Dan__
26 Nov 16 #58
after reading the comments on here, not too sure this is a good buy. Besides I think any 5.1 system will be overkill for my room.

tomcrocker
26 Nov 16 #55
sorry this was meant for the comment around THX.....
tomcrocker
26 Nov 16 #54
and this is the bit that makes no sense.... surely if there is some kind of scientific test that is done to certify the speakers as THX quality, does this not objectively prove that these are the best speakers you can get for this price? In other words, all those other speakers that don't have the certification technically do not produce the same quality?

I have a pair of Z623s. They're really good - would also recommend the Harman Kardon Soundsticks III which are fantastic too and look nice (IMO) and I think have slightly better sound quality. Problem with them was a high pitched buzzing sound - went through two units and returned both, now with the Z623s with no problems
FireBIade200
26 Nov 16 1 #49
Basically it means it meets high performance criteria, the bar by which high end audio/visual equipment is measured (as well as Dolby etc)

"THX Certification is a rigorous set of industry standards for audio reproduction. Essentially, it means that the sound coming out of your 5.1 surround sound or other speaker system is being heard exactly as the audio engineer intended for it to sound while he was recording and mixing it."
tomcrocker
26 Nov 16 1 #48
what exactly is THX? i understand it is a certification for cinema sound but what does it mean "in reality?"
FireBIade200
26 Nov 16 #47
Key thing here is it's a THX certified setup. I've had the older model for ages, blown a few ceramic fuses in it's time, but it's been rock solid. Replaced the front speakers with 'proper' speakers but still use the Logitechs for rears. Surprisingly good for movies and not bad for music. I use a manual optical switch (ebay) for multiple optical sources.

Most of these comments sound like they're coming from people who use these as TV/console surround set ups. But what about PC gaming setups where they're pretty close to you?

This is a perfectly good speaker system for the money
tomcrocker to robodan918
26 Nov 16 #34
That's exactly my logic too. Every shop I have been into has said the same thing...... to hear anything significantly better you need to look at 5 or £600 plus.
timb999
26 Nov 16 1 #32
Discrete surround speakers are going to fill your room with audio better and give better separation.......but will also require wires and places to put the speakers. Depends on how much you care about the audio for your viewing
timb999
26 Nov 16 #30
Had 4 Logitech 5.1 systems in last 10 years for our company as a cheap consumer surround system...only 1 is still working. Wouldn't buy them again on unreliability alone,

This is a good price but yeah I decided against these a few years ago (for my living room) and spent a bit more for an AV amp plus a good 5.1 speaker set. No regrets.

Fwiw...if you do want more features for less money you could consider getting a 2nd hand AV amp from eBay etc. They are usually large and heavy and people don't want to ship them so local pickup bargains are common. Then just need to pick up a decent set of speakers and you will end up with a much better system
schnide
26 Nov 16 #29
These are brilliant. Whenever this set comes up, there are people telling you that you need an amp and full surround etc.

I've had surround sound kits for years and this is my latest. I love it to bits, the sound is great, the price is even better and you don't have a big ugly amp or have to wait for HDMI handshaking.

It's a steal. Heat added.

Z5500 was much better. Better build quality. An actual display screen. Dolby PL2 for stereo sources instead of just some 3D audio thing. More options and adjustments. This is essentially a scaled back budget Z5500

Junk.

These sets remind me of the 5 CD Changer MEGA Midi era, where everything was 3000RMS shone 4 different colours based on you listening to 160bpm or 120bpm and came in a variety of garish form factors.

This isn't a quality set, it's trash that's being sold to you as an experience, it will give you that experience but it shall still be a trashy one.

If you genuine need 5.1 from such nasty looking chipboard boxes, best of luck. For anybody else? Go spend that money on a set of good stereo speakers or active monitors.

You could also use a desktop (or car) amp wired to some good quality passive speakers from somewhere like RS. If you go the car amp route you can screw it to the underside of your desk.

Richer Sounds, opt for separate AV Receiver and speaker set, rather than the all-in-one packages, yes it will cost at least £180 for cheapest AV Receiver and another £120 for a 5.1 speaker package but well worth it.
All in one home cinema, never again! :disappointed:

26 Nov 16 #13
Of course, there is zero noise and 6.1 channels. With phono you have only two channels, left and right. And susceptible to noise and interference.
tomcrocker
26 Nov 16 #12
do you think optical is noticeably better than phono?
0zone
26 Nov 16 1 #11
It obviously depends on usage. This isn't very flexible, for example you've only got one optical in, so you may be forced to use phono cables if your other devices don't have coaxial out. I'm sat next to mine right now. You also don't have any wireless inputs, so again if you want to use your phone as a music player it will have to be phono again. So basically you're only getting the dolby digital on one optical and one coaxial, whereas with a bonafide surround amp you'll likely have three to four times the inputs, and not forced in to using sub par 2-channel connectivity on the majority of those inputs.

You also don't have basic settings like bass and treble control, in fact there's no control of any kind other than volume on the front speakers and volume on the back speakers, and of the subwoofer.
