indeed, you can pick up Sandy Bridge core-i5 Dell desktops for well under £200. I bought one for my wife, it included windows 7 64 bit pro, 8GB ram, 250GB disk, dvd etc, for £180. Fit a cheap SSD and you've got a brilliant machine.

bzzzt, wrong. some do. just one example, there are many:
Processor Graphics ‡ Intel® HD Graphics P4600
Graphics Base Frequency 350.00 MHz
Graphics Max Dynamic Frequency 1.20 GHz

Yes they do. Very basic Intel HD ones.
Xeons don't have an iGPU.

I'm looking to spend about this for my son, not for gaming obviously just for video editing. Any recommendations for just a tower upto £200? Much obliged.

Video editing work is CPU intensive. This CPU is dire. £200 doesn't buy much to be honest. Might be better looking for second hand build with an i3 (i5 if lucky).

The odd Zoostorm PC turns up on here with the sort of power you might need but £200 is a little low. You'll need to spend more or buy second-hand.
That's early 2000s logic. The i series Intel's onwards have the cores for the GPU on the CPU.

can get a refurbished core 2 duo on ebay for 40 quid that are more than adequate for that. same processors we use at work for number crunching.

agreed but you can get cheaper and better if you look elsewhere. i am thinking of getting a core 2 quad for my son but he is too young. but a lot of them on my ebay watch list for around 60 to 80 quid. i have seen i3s for around 120. so if people search "refurbished i3 desktop" on ebay can get a better deal

aha. the old percentage vs absolute...
it is 400 points more
however...
the difference between atom and i3 is 2000 points
the difference between i3 and i5 around 2000 points
similar for i7
so it is a marginal improvement
if the processor was 1 and then a new one was 100
this would be 100 x better
but still a 10th as fast as an atom and unable to run modern software
so it would be a significant improvement 8f we were running windows 3.1

1700/1300 is a 31% improvement, which I wouldn't count as "barely"
i got refurbished i5 and put in gtx 750ti. cost 300 quid (100 for graphics, 200 pc) for just over 200 (100 pc 100 graphics) quid can get i3 if look around

That's like sticking a car with all the extras inside it and having a 1 litre engine. Pointless. Some Celerons and AMD chips these days are soldered to the motherboard as well, making upgrades impossible.
Advice for gaming people. My son has an Athlon X4 and a 560Gtx with 8gb ram. He can run games on 720p easily. I have a phenom X6 and a 760gtx and can run 1080p on high.
You can pick up rigs like this for around 200 on eBay, or try here and avforums classifieds. Hell, even try gumtree.

600 cpu bench mark per thread, a pi3 would be a better buy

I'm looking for an entry-level gaming PC for my 11-year old and I'm presuming from the comments above that this one wouldn't be any good. Any advice or suggestions as to what I should be looking for would be gratefully received!

celerons are so bad I wouldn't take one for free, shame they couldn't have at least put a Pentium in there, they are barely more expensive.

this has cpu benchmark of 1700 which is barely higher than my atom notebook of 1300.
this is a browsing and netflix pc
not gaming not video editing
if you can video edit in cloud then fine
you could put a graphics card in it but best off getting a cheap i3 as will last longer. heck even a good pentium
google the processor and look on cpu benchmark results. i would get at least a q6600 or q8400 refurbished desktop on ebay for around 100 quid with lots of memory (min 4 pref 8 gb) for video editing. ideally can find a cheap i5 for say 150. can get an original i7 for 200 refurbished on ebay. but this will prob be too slow. you would want a cpu benchmark of around 4000 minimum. i3s give you around 3000. my i5 is around 5000 to 6000.

Thanks for the replies. Just don't want to spend too much on what's likely to be another fad for him.

"Processor Graphics ‡ Intel® HD Graphics"
problem is that "celeron" and "pentium" are effectively meaningless brand names.
this is an Atom, with a Silvermont core, of the newer Braswell variety (replacement for Baytrail)
