Left 4 dead 2 is only 2.99 on steam at the moment.
Dota 2 and CSGO still rake in a couple of hundred million each a year. The prize pool at the dota 2 international was over $20M,the winning team got $9m, I didn't realise esports were worth that much these days!
I'm hoping all the 3rd releases will be in VR now and will be just as ground breaking as the originals were. Probably a few more years to wait though.
If you own a game on steam you can play it on whatever platform it is compatible with. You can even have the games installed on windows and mac at the same time. If it's Mac compatible there is a little apple logo next to the windows one.

Valve do a lot more than just sell other peoples games to make revenue.
I just had a quick browse to see what they are actively putting resource into and getting a return from at present:
Development
Cloud Usage
VAC Usage
Source 1 Engine
Source 2 Engine
Active maintenance and development for Counter Strike: Global Offensive
Active maintenance and development for Dota 2
Active maintenance and development for Team Fortress 2
Working with HTC Vive VR
Steam Link Support
Steam Controller Support
Steam OS Support
Tournament Organisation
They look to make more money from their own games, service's and Marketplace than the cut they take from the 3rd party game distribution

Are these Steam keys playable on Mac too?

Yes, there is no limitation as the versions aren't distinct products. L4D2 specifically also supports Linux.
On a different note, people might say L4D is irrelevant because L4D2 has all its campaign maps ported over, but the original is still the best way to play them for a multitude of reasons.

Lost hope in L4D3 as Valve can't seen to count passed two;
True. They make much more money from selling other people's games. There's no business sense in spending 2 or 3 years making a game when they can probably make the same money on the steam fees on marketplace items in less time

The Left 4 Dead franchise is one of the best that came out of Valve. The storyline is not really there since there are "episodes". There is also mod support which means that after you've finished the main game, you can get more levels from the mod community... or you can get a naked mod.

Portal 1&2
Half-Life 1&2
Half-Life 2 Ep1&2
L4D 1&2
Teamfortress 1&2
Three is the hardest number, apparently.
