Re Whirlpool, belts are fairly cheap and easy enough to fit.
Re; rinsing.
I assume you've already checked drainage filters and water pump for blockages?
First, do a smaller wash and DO NOT use any detergent, do this two or three times and keep an eye on the rinse performance. Sometimes the machine is clogged and sometimes we put too much washing in (sometimes too much detergent too).
Maybe have a look at the water valve (delivers water to the machine), and check for loose, blocked, kinked or disconnected inlet hoses, look also at electical wires for loose, broken or burned out wires.
Failing that it could be either a broken or malfunctioning water temperature switch, or the washer timer.
Older washing machines were built to last - newer ones not so.
If you can get the Whirlpool up and running again it may be a better option than buying new.
Re, the Samsung, personally not keen, read a lot of negatives on websites such as UK Whitegoods.co, re reliabiltity, repair problems, customer service problems seem to be a big problem on forums, so all in all I'm not keen on Samsungs.
In saying that, almost all the top ten machines rated by Which magazine are Samsungs, and I know good friends who have them and they love them.
I believe they are all direct drive and that's fine on a solid (perhaps concrete) floor, but I would strongly advise against using on suspended floors.
Cheapest and best option at the moment in Which Mag's best buy washing machines is Zanussi ZWF91283W, if you can get it at £300 or less you're doing well - good value for the money.
None of the Beko's are Best buys and those that come close (but still miles off) are priced the same as the best buy Zanussi above.
If you really want a cheap okayish Beko this one fits the bill; Beko WMB91233LW, don't pay more than £220 for it.

Thank you for the advice, she's had an old Whirlpool for about 10 years (itself bought second hand, which I think is quite impressive!) and it hasn't missed a beat until fairly recently, when it started not rinsing as thoroughly and smelling of burning rubber on the fastest spin speed... Have a feeling the burning smell is the drive belt, which I think is fairly cheap and easy to replace (?), but no idea what's causing the poor rinsing.
Might go for a Beko, although what do you think of the Samsung Ecobubble currently on the front page? Also looking at second hand Mieles, given that they can be had fairly cheaply and seem to last forever - the old machines certainly seem more reliable than the modern ones, not sure if that's because of built in obsolescence or the fact they have more parts in them to go wrong.

Good find OP. We've had our Renlig for 6.5 years now and been great (Family of 5). All our appliances are Ikea as they all come with a 5 year guarantee. Only had to use them once when the oven door shattered on a pyro clean. Swapped out no problem.

Miele products last for years, one of my fridge freezers i've had since 2002 and the other one since 2011 and no problems at all. Good luck with gumtree

Mieles are heavier because they're made with cast iron weights rather than concrete - better built, more precise, more effective, but yes, blinkin heavy.
The guarantees aren't so very good these days, Miele are quite threatening re 'there may be a call out charge if engineer deems call out avoidable' - what?
Nevertheless, Miele are still miles ahead of the rest imho.
Guarantees on lesser machines are also worded in such a fashion as you're not always getting what you think you're getting.
This Renlig is good for what you're paying - wouldn't worry about the rinsing - which say that about a lot of machines - they're just super fussy.
If you can't afford a Miele it may make sense just to get a Which rated Beko (standalone) at a cheap price, rather than forking out for a middle to high end non-miele.

Ah righty, sounds ideal for what you're going going to use it for but the lack of warm wash does limit things a bit! You definitely do get what you pay for, although I think Miele only give a 5 year guarantee now, same as Samsung et al... Will have a look on Gumtree, Bournemouth's pretty close for me so thanks for the tip! Might enlist the help of someone brawny if I do end up getting one second hand however

My miele i've had for about 16 yrs. It only does a cold wash, so i'm going to use it outside for cleaning my dirty DIY clothes. Its served me well over the years and you get what you pay for  You could look on gumtree for one, but word of warning they weight a ton and very hard to lift up. I saw a good one in Bournemouth and that was the only reason why I didn't go for it, too heavy to lift.

For those interested, here's the "Which?" review of this machine:
A mixed bag, with poor rinsing - 53%
The Ikea Renlig integrated washing machine is designed to be built into a fitted kitchen cabinet. It's packing a fast 1,400rpm spin, you can load it with up to 7kg of laundry, and it's quieter than some machines. But is it any good at washing clothes? To find out, we put it through dozens of tests at the Which? test lab. Read on for our full review and results for this Ikea built-in washing machine.
PROS Great when washing synthetics, satisfactory when washing cottons
CONS Poor rinsing
This isn't a bad washing machine but it's badly let down by poor rinsing.
What is it?
This is an affordable built-in washing machine with a reasonable capacity for this kind of integrated appliance and it spins at the speed you need to get your clothes dry enough to transfer to the line or the dryer.
It has the features you'd expect a modern machine to have, including a delayed start and a time-remaining display. And we like the fact that this machine has both a panel lock, to stop little fingers from messing with your settings, and a door lock to make sure the drum can't be opened when the machine isn't in use.
For more on the specification of this machine, click the 'Technical specifications' tab, above.
What's it great at?
We like the ease with which this washer blasts stains out of manmade fibres, making this a good option if you always seem to be washing sports kit. But it's only satisfactory when washing cottons - it will get clothes clean, but we've seen machines that are better.
The spin isn't bad, but we've seen machines that are as fast as this one and also do a better job, and keep energy costs nice and low.
Is there anything I should look out for?
Rinsing is poor and if you were washing dark items with it, you'd be likely to find a few flecks of washing powder on some of your clothes at the end of the wash.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Most washing machines are noisy, but we found this Ikea machine better at keeping the noise down than most. And a larger door-opening would make loading large items a bit easier.
Should I buy it?
It's worth considering, given the relatively affordable price tag for an integrated machine, and overall washing is fine. Just be aware that you might need to run extra rinse programs to get rid of every last trace of detergent.
