Many folks like me build very capable HTPCs or media streamers that only require 120GB OS disks - they then stream media from NAS attached servers which host the media files or from online sources.

Does that answer your comments sufficiently !

Replacing the drive should be simple (there's usually a bay to hold it which should be easily accessible) . Getting Windows onto the new drive is trickier: If your Dell comes with a recovery disk you could use that. You could also backup the current install using the built in Windows back up (you should use an external drive for that) and create a recovery disk too to use with that. Other alternatives are using clone software to keep the install exactly as is. However, this drive is a lot smaller in capacity than 1tb, so the existing install cannot exceed that. Assuming your Laptop won't have too much on it when it arrives though that shouldn't be an issue.

If the laptop is Windows 10 I'm not sure if the activation will still hold after changing the drive (never replaced a windows 10 one yet, but never had issues cloning/migrating Windows 7 to a new drive). If that is an issue the OEM key that should come with the laptop (sticker on the base usually) ought to be enough to deal with that.

it's dead simple. you can google and find loads of guides inside, sometimes specific to your model.

I would suggest starting by shrinking the partition on your current drive down to just under the size of the SSD, for example 100gb (as if the drive is new it shouldn't have much data), using something like easus partition manager free. and then if you get a USB caddy for about £5 on ebay, stick the SSD in that, use some other free easus software to clone your old drive to the new one (again look for guides online). then remove old drive, stick in SSD and it should boot. then use easus partition manager to increase the partition to the maximum size

that saves having to make an image and/or reinstall. that's how I usually do it

then you can stick the 1tb drive in the USB caddy and use it as an external drive. just make a new partition and use the new partition as storage space and the OS partition is still there so if things go wrong you can swap drives back again and the laptop will boot from the 1tb drive

It's a joke.Year ago i bought 260gb ssd for about 47 pounds, and now people are exitet about useless 120 gb
snatch_master
28 Nov 16 2 #50
I suspect that 260GB is useless too, for that price, especially if it is of the unusual size of 260GB. I've bought many Samsung EVO 850 250GB drives, over the last year or so the price has ranged from £65-90. This drive will suit many folk, myself included who simply want a fast booting OS on an old machine that does not need to store anything and given that these lower-end drives have been hovering around the £40 mark for some time, £25 is quite a welcome reduction.

0.208p per gb not bad but the crucial 525gb deal was better
snatch_master
28 Nov 16 #55
Agreed, and Friday's 750GB better than that, I think the fact a lot of folk just needed something cheap is the winner. I for one didn't want to put a £80-100 drive in a PC I picked up for £50.
Mortis123
28 Nov 16 #56
and who can make use of 120gb?!
CelicaGT-Four
28 Nov 16 1 #57
yep... this ^ . It's not hard but do read up first. Ground yourself before opening your computer too, so you don't have a static charge. I used Todo EaseUS (free) software to do the cloning and it worked great. I did 3 laptops and 2 desktops for family. My upgrade to a 120gb ssd from a 1tb HDD was a little tricky to get the partition down small enough, but ok eventually. After reading up it sounded like Todo was one of the few cloning softwares to handle cloning to a smaller drive without problems. I'm a very intermediate on computers, so read up enough and you'll be fine.

28 Nov 16 2 #58
anyone who doesn't store music, videos or games. Plenty of home office machines use less than 120gb of storage but could do with the speed upgrade. Plus it is not uncommon to have a small boot drive with operating system and applications then have a second larger drive or NAS/server for data.

Suppose for the price, it's probably the best upgrades for a low-end computer.

Wouldn't put a 120 in a nas, nor a server. Boot times on servers aren't important if you're running all apps from a 7200rpm drive.

SSD waste of money... invest in a proper setup.

For 99% of uses and 99% of users, the SSD is the proper setup. But I'd love to know what 'proper setup' you would recommend for less than 25 notes...
ollie87
28 Nov 16 #70
Hahahahahahaha.
uni
28 Nov 16 #71
you don't necessarily have to, it depends on your setup. if it's a desktop you may be able to connect both drives at the same time as long as you have the cables. most laptops only take 1 drive internally so a ' 2.5" sata usb caddy ' (google or search that in ebay) would let you connect the second drive externally

typically it's easier to connect the new drive externally first then run software to copy the old windows install to it and then swap the drives around, and as long as you've done it right it should work. as long as you read what you are doing and click the right options it should work

one thing that can cause issues is if you are moving from a bigger size drive/partition to a smaller one. the trick is to delete unnecessary stuff or move it to another drive like flashdrive, clean out unneeded temp files (run diskcleanup - windows inbuilt software) and then shrink the partition down, then clone the drive then make the partition bigger and move back stuff you had to take off - as long as you have space to do it

it should do yeah, and it's about the cheapest option you can get even on ebay (within a few pence). just check it's a UK supplier unless you want to wait till the new year for it to come from china

if you want to resuse the old drive as an external one I'd suggest paying a pound or two more and getting a cheap caddy so the drive is covered up. that cable will work but gives no protection to the drive so only really suitable for the odd job of transferring data. certainly on ebay you should get one for around a fiver for a UK supplier, maybe on amazon too

No need to be worried. I had other deliveries from mymemory coming from Switzerland take longer. Last one was a bit more than two weeks. All on the standard free delivery.

This one was exceptionally swift. My understanding is - based on some hear-say from a mate at Royal Mail - that it depends on Heathrow IDC (the RM international delivery hub) and their workload/priorities/mood on the day if this container load still gets done immediately or if it is not yet and put at the back. Also HMCR might release one container early or another one is delayed by them (coming from Switzerland means customs control, although a lot is waved through, they always like to check some).

I have installed it in my Dell e6230 laptop in place of the existing drive. I then installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. I had a problem booting from the drive, I was receiving an error message of the form 'No bootable devices - strike F1 to retry boot etc.' (and it booted fine when pressing F1). This was fixed by changing the drive mode from raid to ahci in the bios and now working as expected.

Has anyone had any Heat Temperature problems with this drive (Integral 120GB V Series 2.5" Sata III 6Gbps SSD)?

Using software like Speccy to check the temps, Mine always reads over 40C, even though all my other drives are only in their 20's - I've touched the SSD with my hand and it's fine - not even warm but reading over 40C which is clearly isn't in real life.

And note this is 44C right now without even being accessed. Whilst the Sandisk SSD running windows 8.1 and actively being used only read 26C.
