Just seen this on Currys & PC World websites -best price in the market from what I can see on this printer. It was £49.99 now £35 which is quite a good save for a printer of this value. Plus it has 5 months free trial of HP Instant Ink which you can cancel when the trial is up (think Netflix). Basically if you opted for the 300 pages per month plan then you would be getting £40 worth of ink so this is a BARGAIN! Reckon this will sell fast so if you are looking for a printer, this looks to be a cracker! £3.50 cashback available via QUIDCO until Sunday too

sorry if I sound dense but I just want to double check I have this right. they send you out enough ink every month so you can print out 300 items? until you cancel? you get it free for 5 months? so essentially 1500 free prints?

Yes you just register when you set up your printer and then manage your subscription from your PC. So you can drop down if you are receiving too much ink. They do it on pages so it means you can print as much colour or photos as you like

Sounds good. I have an Epson with the cheap cartridges but they get eaten up with a few pages of colour printing, so probably worth keeping the Epson for standard text printing and just use this for printing photos and scanning colour stuff?

The printer has to be connected to WiFi and sends a notification to HP to send more ink out. I've only had one set of cartridges in a few months but not a heavy user. You don't get new ink each month unless your current cartridges are running low

Scorchio. We've been an instant ink user (300 pages) for over a year. As noted it's superb value IF you print regularly and maximise what your printing, as 1 page is 1 page no matter how much or little is on it. We're at the point now we're going to invest in a laser to print forms / docs and stick to the full pages of photo's on the HP.
£8p/m for the 300 page plan, effectively meaning HP are giving you a fiver to keep the printer at the end.

Remember! These come with a set of regular ink cartridges in the box IN ADDITION to the 5 month Instant Ink trial. I'm not sure if you can defer the start date of the trial, but I'd recommend using up the initial ink cartridges before starting the trial to get the best value.
In response to the question above, when you're using Instant Ink (either on a trial or paid), the printer tells HP when you're going to need cartridges and HP then sends them out before the Instant Ink cartridges have run out, so you aren't left without ink.
With Instant Ink, the pages you print can be absolutely anything - it can be just a few lines of text printed on an A4 piece of paper, or perhaps even a full resolution A4 photo printed on quality photo paper. The amount of ink you use doesn't matter at all, it only counts the pages used. This is why when using the trial it's best to opt for the plan with the highest pages per month, then downgrade shortly before it ends.

I have 2 of these. set my daughters up last night, an they already emailed to say they sending new ink cartridges, you don't put new ones in till printer says on ink, so you will use up what's in them before the new one arrives. Don't forget if you buy one to use a refer a friend code, as this gives you an extra month on top of the 5 months, so will give you 6 months free ink.

Can you print on the subscription inks when you want to use the high quality setting, then use other cartridges when you want to print draft as quality doesn't matter? Otherwise they seem to be forcing you into printing (or at least paying for) high quality whether you need it or not.

Just something to consider... I bought a cheap HP inkjet a couple of years ago, didn't use it for around 9 months and when I came to use it again the jets were clogged up and I think the ink could have been dried up. The replacement ink would have cost more than the original printer so I ended up buying a laser printer as the ink doesn't dry up with these. Just saying.

Seeing that the others are joking about, I'll answer your questions
No Bluetooth or fax facilities I'm afraid.
Yes, you can print photos from your iPhone thorough Apple AirPrint on small photographic paper.
When the 5 month free trial ends you can either:
1. Continue with HP Instant Ink at £1.99, £3.49 or £7.99 per month; or 2. Cancel HP Instant Ink and buy cartridges the normal way.
And if you don't do much printing and only print photos, I'd recommend you stay with HP Instant Ink at £1.99 per month for 50 pages. If you decide not to use Instant Ink, a set of genuine 302XL cartridges are around £40.

Think I been conned, is there a code in the box that gives you the free 5 month trial, as when I purchased I noticed it said on the box 2 months, so I queried it with a member of staff(who looked like he had as much of a clue as Mr White in the library with a candlestick) that it stated 5 months on the promotional signage and he gave me this card regarding instant ink and charged me £1.99 for the pleasure, also if there is a code in the box for the 5 month trial how long does it last as I am planning on giving this to my daughters for Xmas?

My current printer is an Epson and its the worst printer Ive ever had. If you run out of one colour, you can't do any printing, not even in black and white. Are all printers like this now? My old HP printers rarely had working colour in them but I could still print in black and white.

Nearly every printer is like this. At least with Epson you only change the one colour not a tricolour Inc the print head like most HP ones AND the Epson ink can often be had for pennies.
I've got a WF -7610DWF I got it dirt cheap from amazon & a full set of inks is £5.
Just stick with your Epson & buy 3rd party inks from Amazon/ebay/svp I always keep 2 full sets on hand they're so cheap it's not worth worrying about

The 5 month period starts from when you sign up. There was no "use by" date on mine.
So to confirm - you could get yourself some photo paper, print a total of 1500 photos/pages over 5 months for free, then just use as a normal printer?
Does the instant ink thing start automatically charging you when your five months is up?
Do the instant ink and standard ink cartridges replace each other physically or do they all have space at once? if all at once and you print say, 301 pages in a month, can it be told to use the instant ink for 300 and the standard ink for the final 1?

I have an Epson, but being a former IT engineer can tell you first hand nearly all printers are absolute sh**s. My Epson randomly appears offline, requires reboots and installation is always a pain on any device but at less than £1 per cartridge who cares. Some of the cheap HPs have the same habits, my sister in law's took alot of my time with its apparent random refusals to print, random ink levels (no ink showing even though almost new cart with few prints) - then after they decide to try compats just weeks after sticking them in HP nukes them.

as Henry Ford said (allegedly), you can have the car for free if he can maintain your car.
It's good value if you sign up for 50 prints a month and print 50 photos a month. If you don't print your full allowance, then the value obviously depletes rapidly until there is no advantage. If you go over, then additional prints are a premium. If you compare it to an Epson printer with third party cartridges (which are still excellent quality) then it is not good value.
So only buy if:
1. You will always print close to the subscribed quantity 2. you are printing 90% photos or other high colour / saturation prints. 3. You believe Epson quality is too inferior for your needs.

The Canon printers I have at work don't like the clocks changing - every time the clocks change, everyone has to reinstall their print drivers, otherwise their computers go nuts - including Microsoft Office apps, even if it was just looking at a print preview and not printing to the affected printers. Crappy drivers. Some laptops I even had to completely nuke the printer from their machines (net stop / start spooler, delete client side rendering reg key, then delete printer from printmanagement.msc - not fun!). Probably would have been easier just to restore it!

It doesn't work like that. Once the ink cartridge in the printer reaches a certain level, they'll send out a new cartridge (either black or colour, or both if both are running low). You'll never get to accumulate a 'stockpile', as HP knows how much ink is left in the existing cartridges.
Plus I'm pretty sure that if you cease to subscribe to HP Instant Ink, the Instant Ink cartridges will refuse to print any more pages until you subscribe again. These cartridges are different to regular ones you find in the shops.

Very true! Had Epson and HP printers and compatible inks are a waste of money as some printers won't allow you to use them even though the people selling them say they do. How is the quality of printing on this?
moneybag
16 Nov 16#146
You pay for 50 pages, so you if you use this up printing full stops, you then have to pay for extra prints. For example on the £1.99 a month plan, each additional 15 pages costs £1. They won't send out new ink until you have nearly run out. You are paying for a quantity of prints, not ink, in effect.

The photo printing on this printer is awful - it's excellent in all other aspects. Even when printing on HP paper the colour varies massively from one print to another and is nothing like the original. I've spent weeks going through this with HP Support and they concluded it wasn't going to be made better and that the picture printing on the box is nothing like the actual output.

You get an allowance of 500 pages per month - this isn't equated to a certain number of cartridges, it's purely pages.
Month 1: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 90% left Month 2: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 80% left Month 3: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 70% left Month 4: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 60% left Month 5: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 50% left
You'll never be sent a new cart, because you haven't run out.
Now, in this example, 500 colour photos uses 40% of the black cartridge, and 60% of the colour:
Month 1: print 500 colour photos: Black 60%, Colours 40% left Month 2: print 500 colour photos, Black 20%, Colours 80% left (they will have sent a new colour cart when your colour one was getting low) Month 3: print 500 colour photos, Black 80%, colours 20% left (they will have sent a new black cart when your colour one was getting low)
etc etc etc.

16 Nov 16#152
so for a low user you can't just claim an ink cartrdge each month for the 5 months and store them for a few years? You have to actually use the ink up (print several pages) to get ink sent out?
Any way round this for a low user to take advantage of the additional ink cartridges that can be used later?

Crazy TBH.. Why do printers make so many problems? Again when we changed broadband provider, the Epson would not talk to the new router, took a age to sort. [[b[/b][/b][b[/b]quote=preecey]Remember! [/quote]
They are starter cartridges so will only last about 50 prints. The instant ink month starts when you put the new cartridges in.

As moneybag and I have stated above...
You get two regular ink cartridges in the box. These are not Instant Ink cartridges. You can either use them straight away or keep them for emergencies.
You also get a card with a 5 month Instant Ink code. This code can be used on any Instant Ink plan, even the most expensive one which allows for 300 pages to be printed per month.
When you subscribe to Instant Ink (either using the 5 month trial or paying for a subscription), HP sends you special Instant Ink cartridges which you install into your printer. These are different to regular cartridges.
Every month you are allowed to print up to the maximum amount of pages as detailed in your plan. If you opted for the 300 pages plan, you can only print 300 pages per month as part of the plan, and you'll have to pay extra if you wish to print more.
You can print anything you want, be it a simple letter or a high quality photo.
The printer communicates automatically with HP when the ink is about to run low. HP then posts you more Instant Ink to use when the Instank Ink cartridges in the printer run out.
The Instant Ink cartridges are sent out at no cost to you - it's all part of the service.

You return them, whether recycled or reused though I don't know.
Exactly - just think of a subscription service. Cheaper cost of ink because you are subscribed and saves you having to go to the shops to buy more as HP will send it to you. Obviously this won't suit everyone as not everyone likes signing up to stuff or doesn't print enough but for me it's great. Nothing more annoying than having to go the shop because you've run out of ink mid-work!

Hi all...need help deciding if this will be £35 well spent.
I have an older HP4500 on the £1.99 instant ink plan. Is this printer an actual upgrade or performance is the same? The £35 outlay equals about 17 months of instant ink on my current plan so the actual printer has to be better for it to make sense.

I would imagine that if you mainly print text this would not be very cost effective in the long run, at least not so cost effective as if you printed a lot of colour and photos etc? I maybe print 200 a month, so need to go for 300 a month at 7.99. The eps on cartridge at about 18 lasts about 800-1000 so in this situation it could be twice as expensive. Plus if the printer prints virtually blank pages ( as often happens when you print emails or from online) your paying for nothing! Plus you need to actively monitor your situation so not to print over your allowance. It's all another big con in my mind - only very specific circumstances would yield you decent savings.
gh000stman
17 Nov 16#202
Always used to be the case that printers like Epson would dry up if not used, but compatible cartridges were very cheap, so as long as you used it then fine, else it could dry up. HP didn't have that problem because the print head was built into the cartridge and so got replaced with every new cartridge. Downside was that you couldn't get cheap compatibles.
No idea if still the same though, so if anyone could clarify would be much appreciated.

But no seriously, you set up a credit card and if you go over, it automatically charges you for an additional amount. I'm on the £1.99 a month plan for 50 pages, if I went over it would be £1 for 15 more pages. Unused pages roll over to the next month, with a maximum of 50 pages being allowed to rollover in my plan. You can go to the HP instant ink website and see exactly how many you have used and how many you have rolled over (I believe there are other ways to check too, directly on the Printer, but never have done). HP will also email you when you are nearing your monthly limit to warn you,

This is a great printer, certainly the best one I've ever owned. I didn't bother with the ink plan after the free trial though. If you do a lot of heavy duty colour printing then it might be cost effective for you to go with a plan, but if you're like me and generally just need to print black and white text based documents with the odd colour page here and there, then a couple of standard ink cartridges will comfortably suit your needs.

Sounds fine, BUT signing up to something always puts me off. There has been one, and only one, problem on using printers - and I've used them for the last 30 odd years ...the INK refills! 5 years ago, this came out. Epson BX305FW Plus. My Canon was playing up. I'd had every make under the sun from HP to Brother to find you always end up paying a fortune for f. inkjets :disappointed: I liked a report by someone who said don't pay 30 quid for the refills, try these. I bought my BX305FW from Viking (on offer for 40 odd quid! X). Eventually one colour runs out, but I didn't go to Sainsburys or even Epson to buy their outrageously priced pack of 4 inkjets (pack with the Fox on, now £35!). No, I took the advice and got a pack of 16 for just £6.99 post free! Would they work? Yep, just as good as the originals. Some people say you put them in and it doesn't recognise them. Just switch off, restart and it does. I have been using this machine since, I have no intention of changing it. If it does pack up, I'll get another. Wi-Fi, copying, colour, black white, the scanner - all brilliant. Wouldn't change for the world! Currently the black ink cartridge needs changing. It's a piece of ****! Lift open scanner part, flip out old cartridge - 'shake' the new one (important) and in goes the new. SOooooo simple. Anyone who doesn't want to sign up for ink deals should look at this. Probably newer models now, but five years on and this is the longest I have ever had one printer. epson.co.uk/pro…lus
Plus, look at how good this looks compared to the basic looks of that HP boring printer. Nah, go for the Epson and save bucketloads on the ink.

It's from about 6 years ago and not been used for a few years as every time I need to use it it needs ink which is expensive. Plus I never successfully managed to get the wifi set up on it. Am I right in thinking I should cut my losses with it and buy the 5546?
jnigel26
17 Nov 16#223
Nope. Honestly, never. The other day I tried to be clever (stupid!) trying to print on some adhesive labels but the sheet of labels was an odd size sheet. So I 'taped' (only a little bit) it to a A4 sheet - I have become so confident with this printer and was in a hurry to print off an address label (usually I just print them on paper and use wide sellotape to stick them on parcels/packages but I'd run out of the wide tape).
oO it jammed, up came 'paper jam' - used to have them years ago often. I thought oh ****, that's it. Switched off, switched on. 'Clear paper jam' came the message. But this had sellotape included! I opened it up, couldn't get it out. Only one choice, pull it backwards. Got it out and I am thinking, that's it. I've **** it up.
Nope. Switched back on and sent same address through from pc but this time onto sheet of A4. It printed as if nothing had happened. Phew! Won't do that again. Oh, another thing - I buy (as I use loads!) reams of A4 whenever it's cheap. Missed the Sainsbury's basic A4 last week on sale at 45p a ream (still fuming about it!) on HotDeals. Ah yes, paper. I even use thin gsm paper. A lot of companies now sell reams and it's 70gram. This works fine on the Epson too. As does thin card 160gm.
Yeah, best printer scanner out there (for the money) imo. Has other options too, even fax - does anyone use that now?

You can print anything, be it a simple letter or a full colour photo. Anything you print counts as one page. The specific plan you sign up for in the trial will determine how many pages you can print off each month. The amount of ink you use doesn't matter as it gets sent out to you automatically before the previous cartridge runs out. There is no cost to you to request and receive the new cartridge(s) - it's all part of the scheme. The request for a new cartridge is done automatically by the printer. Once the trial ends you can continue on a month by month basis on the plan you've chosen for the trial, downgrade it to a lower plan, or cancel altogether and revert to buying cartridges as normal. You must be aware that if you do cancel, the Instant Ink cartridge that will be in your printer at the time, won't print out anything else even if it still has lots of ink left. You'll need to buy a regular cartridge.

CONTINUING my bit on the Epson 'brill' printer. Just had a search, and last year you could still find the odd 'new' boxed one for sale. Not now, only secondhand ones, which would be a bit iffy unless dirt cheap. However, what about this? The 'newer' model and it's on offer. I might even buy one to store away at this price if it uses the same 'cheap' inkjets I can obtain. amazon.co.uk/Eps…0WF 47 quid, not much more than I paid 5 years ago. For what is in effect a small office printer. BARGAIN! Just look at reviews, some don't like it but horses for courses. I would definitely get another Epson, just for the saving to be gained on ink - perhaps some compatible inks are crap. I chanced Perfect Print ones, so cheap, and no problems. They come packed extremely well and all sealed. What's not to like in the age of rip-off inkjet cartridges.

The low usage ink scheme looks particularly bad value to me.
You pay £24/year for what theoretically is 600 pages, but in reality you will probably use much less and maybe suffer overage fees as well (printing between 1 and 15 extra pages costs £1)
This is a decent deal for £35, but the reality is that after the trial is up, this printer is probably best thrown in the bin.

Doesn't seem a bad deal to me.
I've been using this printer for a few months now and I'm a very light user. Out of my trial period but I don't see it going in the bin any time soon.
I generally only use 1/2 my monthly allowance (circa 25 sheets) but even then I don't think £24 a year is unreasonable for 300 prints and for the convenience of not having to buy ink in. Works out at 12p a print and when you consider that's a mix of black and colour prints I don't think that's bad value.
The Epson it replaced likely cost a lot more to run and was reliant on all 4 carts having ink in them or it wouldn't print anything. And as soon as you threw colour into the mix one or other of the colour carts would run out fairly quickly which could be inconvenient when I needed to do prints at short notice.
As finknottle says you can also carry over your unused allowance to the next month (50 sheets max if on the £1.99 plan) so don't imagine overage fees will be an issue for most folk unless they go through a mix of very lean months followed by heavy months of printing. But if it's something they anticipate happening then they could always upgrade to a higher tier for as long as required to avoid unexpected costs. May also be possible to upgrade tier mid month too if approaching the limit but not something I've had to look into.

Arrived this morning! Easy to set up and enrol in the instant ink subscription, did a test print at A4 of a photo, not amazing but to be honest it's not terrible. Can't really go wrong for 35 quid for 1500 colour photo prints!
Good deal!

Just 2 questions if anybody can help.
1/ If you subscribe then cancel after say 2 months or whenever, if you haven’t yet used the original cartridges that came with the printer then install them and try to use them after you have cancelled, will they work or not. (presuming they will be the “instant ink” variety cartridge?
2/ During a subscription period, if your printer is for whatever reason disconnected from the internet, if you try to print, will it still print?
thanks in advance for any help.

If you buy cartridges (Compatible or otherwise) just once a year, I would venture that this is a sound deal. I'm getting it just for my son and his college stuff, and if a couple of pounds a month nails that then I'm a happy bunny. I have an Epson wireless printer, and whilst it stays connected to the wireless, the ports keep changing, so have to be remapped half the time, which frustrates my son who assumes that all homework should be printed out no earlier than 2 min before he is due out of the door.
He gets upset and moans about the printer, and my wife gets upset because he is upset, so then I get upset.
Son's printing £1.99/mth (or even £3.49/mth), but happy wife/life priceless!!!!!!!!!

Jennie, what does the free trial itself give wrt the monthly plans please ( If you know :-) ).
Quite honestly i would have plumped for this anyway with or without, as I like the instant ink idea, but if there is free period I'll take it. Can i for example choose the £7.99/mth option and then just drop down to whatever usage ends up being after 5 months?
Much appreciated, Ken.

Jennie, further to my last question, I noticed when I looked at the instant ink blurb that it talks about getting a free month for both parties for any recommendations that are taken up. Am I correct in thinking that if you for example recommended a dozen of us, we would all get a free month and you would get 12 free months? I'm just thinking that with the obvious amount of interest in this thread, there is maybe an even better deal to be had here :-)
Just wasn't sure if perhaps the free trial would nullify the recommendation option.

HP Instant Ink is one of the best decisions I ever made. For £2 a month, I have the freedom to print anything I want, in full colour, and best quality. As long as I don't go over my limit of course. They send the ink before you need it, so I received my last batch in May and it's only just run out this month. I also had my Printer disconnected for just under a month during a house move, it still worked fine (though I did get messages that it would stop working).

Purchased the 5546. Print and photo quality great. £60 so more expensive but comes with 9 months free instant ink trial and for me it's worth the upgrade in price as I want to be able to print photos as well. Great find OP as I wouldn't have looked at the one I've purchased without seeing this deal. To all those that have said that they don't print enough for the 1.99 subscription.....surely £24 a year isn't excessive in ink costs to have it delivered to your door before you need it.

That is the downside unfortunately, but it does say on the box "instant ink ready cartridges are designed for first use and may have different page yield than replacement cartridges" so they basically provide you with enough to test it out before sending a larger quantity. If you need to print large numbers immediately upon purchase then you're pretty much forced to buy regular cartridges.

My HP printer (different model) came with cartridges that were also instant ink cartridges. So as soon as I started the plan, they became instant ink cartridges, hence if I cancelled the plan, I would no longer be able to use them. It did say on my box that instant ink was included, not sure what it says on this deals box.
The question I haven't been able to get an answer for anywhere is if I print something and it comes out streaky (which happened the other day only it wasn't an important thing so didnt bother reprinting) , hence need to clean the head and reprint, I presume it's counted as two pages when really it should only count as one? And if I need to print as part of the head cleaning proces (will at least want a test page to make sure striping is fixed) again will that count as another page of my allowance

How many pages per month can carry over ?
If I print nothing for 5 months if I choose 5 months free £7.99 option then will I have 1500 pages "in credit" to print ?
Also if I drop to £1.99 option after 5 months do I lost the "pages in credit" - if there are any ?
Can you "pause" the 5 months - I am away Jan/Feb .

Only one month can rollover into the next, so if you've opted for the highest plan and don't print anything one month, you'll have 600 pages for the next month. If you don't print anything that subsequent month, you'll have 600 pages available for the month after that and so on.
I don't think you'll be able to pause the trial in any way, millypede will confirm this however as he/she works for HP.
I also believe if you drop down the plan to the £1.99 option, the 300 pages rolled over will also drop to just 50, again something millypede will need to confirm.

1. The same amount from the previous month, or any pages you havent used, so if you are on 50pp and use 20, you get 30 roll over pages the next month, if you dont use it for two months you will have 100 pages to use.
2. No doesnt work like that.

Following on from my earlier comment about the print quality, here's both the original image and a quick smartphone photo of the full A4 printout.
I'd say the print is slightly warmer and underexposed in comparison to the original (perhaps to do with how it displays on-screen, the photo wasn't processed for printing first) but the sharpness and detail are very good. On the whole it's pretty acceptable for what is essentially amateur printing. Hope this helps people who are still weighing it up.

False economy buying cheap printers as its the ink that ends up costing the money I bought a Canon MG5350. Apart from the fact its a great printer, the after-market carts are dirt cheap and work fine. The biggest problem with HP is that the printer head is within the printer cart which means a much higher production cost. It also means aftermarket options are very limited (and where available, are usually refilled old carts with the same old printer head - and they do not have a long life such as fixed heads do).

Some very bad reports on forums for this service. Not sure that this is a bargain as my HP printer cartridges cost £27 for a double pack of XL for £27. It appears that as soon as you print the required number of sheets then more cartridges are sent but your ink has not run out, so you keep printing on that cartridge and don't need to put your replacement in until it has run out, so this can mean a build up of cartridges you don't use. But if you cancel you will be cut off and can't use those extra cartridges that have built up. Admittedly most of the complaints I have read are from American forums but surely the same would apply in the UK?
Daddio
19 Nov 16#331
When you get to the option to either enter a code or choose a plan choose the highest one then a bit later through the process you connect your printer to the instant ink plan and it prints off a code to enter.

Depends. Ordered for an 11 year old, to start with she'll be printing loads just cos she can and it'll be free. By month 6 she'll likely hardly use it other than school work, so I can drop it to the lower price plan. If by that time she's still a heavy user I'll invest in something more practical, but I suspect I wont need to.

Best. Inkjet. Ever.
The inks are ludicrously cheap, and it's a superb printer! If I could buy another two for the future I would. I've never had a colour dry up on it. It's a bit of a guzzler of ink but the ink cartridges are 25p to 30p each delivered when you buy in bulk - probably less actually! You can also get it to continue printing even when it's adamant it's run out of ink and it's fine for a while longer.

FYI - Got my printer yesterday and signed up for the 5 months free trial @ 300 Pages per month.
I got a low ink replace cartridge warning this morning (only printed 9 pages) As I didn't see it being recorded that I needed more ink in the customer account portal I went on an on-line chat and was told new ink cartridges were sent out yesterday! Should arrive in 4-6 days.
Just thought I'd post this should anyone else encounter low ink warning and it didn't show up in your account as you needed a replacement or that one had been sent.
I jumped the gun a bit but on my call the guy said I would receive a notification email informing me that new inks had been sent.

I agree with other comments, the print quality is very inaccurate.
On the finest setting im getting streaks in heavy black areas, due to the poor quality print heads.
For the money it's great due to the 5 months trial, but its no good for photo printing which makes the subscription very expensive post-trial for basic printing of 5% coverage black text (i.e. documents).
alex3410
19 Nov 16#346
I think there is a little confusion on the service,
there are two parts to it, the cost and then getting new ink.
The cost You select how many pages you want to print per month (for the trial just select the top one and over 5 months you will get an idea for how many pages you can print out - make sure to drop down before you start paying).
The ink The printer monitors ink levels automatically, it also monitors how much your using it. From this it will know when to automatically place an order for new inks so that they arrive before you run out.
so if you print 50 pages say each month and your current set of inks have enough left for 100 pages its not going to order new inks as you wont need them yet. This will also mean you cant stock pile inks because once you have a 'spare' set its not going to order another until you insert this spare set and use enough to trigger the 'new ink needed' alert in the printer itself.
few other things, 1) the inks you get with the printer are for testing only, they let you get the printer installed and working - this is industry standard and nothing new. 2)while its a bit of a waste HP remotely killing the inks when you cancel the service you cant really blame them for doing it.
all in all i think its a brilliant deal
alex3410

Better quality results and faster.
Despite the 2000+ heat, this is still a bottom of the line budget printer which produces very mediocre results. Value for money wise it's good - but don't confused that with quality. This isn't some unique printer thats £35 and produces results that a £300 will. The quality and speed is in line with the £35 price.

20 Nov 16#361
I might get that one myself. The 35 page feeder for the scanner is a major plus, as it'll save me loads of time and hassle when scanning and the 5 months instant ink will be good for printing some flight sim manuals. The only concern I have is whether the scanner will work with empty ink cartridges, as I'll mainly be using it as a scanner once I've printed my manuals, so wouldn't want to keep paying for instant ink or normal carts that will probably dry out through lack of use just so I can scan.

I am waiting for delivery on Monday . 6 months is even better, it finishes exactly same time as the university year  £5 for 6 months of printing even if you throw away the printer after 6 months is still a good deal
manbearpig
20 Nov 16#363
Umm.. so you're opting for the free product over the trial period? That completely defeats the point of the 5 month trial.
Everyone should be selecting the £7.99 option, which you can then move to the free deal after 5 months. But if you go over 15 a month they will charge you a lot...
doricell
20 Nov 16#364
Yes, I have made my maths and realised that it is more convenient for me this way because even if I save on subscription for 5 or 6 months then I will be tied to whichever subscription (even the £1.99) for the month after 6th. Also, you cannot downgrade from the £1.99 (50 pages per month) to the FREE (15 pages per month) in the future. You can only upgrade. You may upgrade and downgrade freely between the various paid subscription plan but NOT downgrade to the FREE one. I have spent good 15 minutes reading all the T & C yesterday!. Hope this clarifies my choice to you. Even if I were to use 25 pages rather than 15, I will only pay £1.00 for each month I go over the 15 page allowance. Still cheaper than £1.99 and , again, not tied to anything

Ordered this on Wednesday and it came next day free delivery on Thursday. Extremely easy to setup as well.
Pros: paper tray hides under the printer neatly. Not too loud Fast scanner One click setup for mac You can run the whole setup from your smartphone
It was a bit tricky to figure out the 5 months trial.
1. You have to click on the HP instant ink button on your smartphone and just continue through to the process of setting up the account.
2. Choose your options of 50, 100 or 300 pages per month, don't click on the redemption option.
3. Next it will ask you to setup web features on the printer and assign an email address which is the same code it will ask you to activate the 5 month trial.
Even if you choose the lowest instant pack it still allows you to print 300 pages per month for the 5 months free trial
Loving the printer so far, let's see how long this lasts.

I have an Epsom 3 IN 1 Printer Scanner and the only Epsom cartridges that have been in it were the ones that came with it. In 2011 I bought a set of Refillable Cartridges off eBay (about £12) as well as 4 x 100ml bottles of ink (about £10 for 1 of each colour & black) the refillable cartridges hold approx 10ml each per fill. I am now on my 2nd set of 100ml bottles, which means the printer has used 10 sets of cartridges for a total cost of £22 = £2.20 per set of 4.The print quality is Very Good. My new inks cost £10 so the next 10 refills will cost me £1 per set . The printer I had prior to this one was also an Epsom and lasted for 15 YEARS all of the cartridges that were used in that were 3rd part ones.

Cant you move from the 300 trial to the free plan in 5 months?
Ordered for airprint heat added. I only print like once or twice a year max ten sheets from home if I am lucky was hoping to just stick to the normal cartridge after trial
zba78
20 Nov 16#381
Just a quick note that during the free trial you can print up to 300 pages with no extra charge regardless of the plan you choose so you don't HAVE to choose the 7.99 plan just for that benefit
manbearpig
20 Nov 16#382
Hang on, you aren't tied into an contract on the sixth month. If you take the 7.99 sub now, you can (and should) cancel that on month 6.
But if you're saying that you can't take the free sub after the 5 months free trial, and you can stay on that indefinately then its a different story. Because then theoretically you can print 15 pages a month for nothing for as long as the printer lasts.. but I guess they are hoping you will print more than 15 pages and thus incur a charge..

I thought this looked a good deal but I am not to sure now. You will get charged each month for what amount of prints you set your account up for eg 50, 100, 300 prints per month whether you use your quota or not. The unused prints for one month roll over to the next month up to double your quota allowance, if the amount of prints carried over from previous months exceed double you allocated allowance then you lose them. Its a way for HP to get a guaranteed income from people each moth

I think the point that has already been made is it all depends on your circumstances. It's like those mobile phone contracts that allow you to make so many minutes worth of calls or send so many texts per month. And just like mobile phones there's the pay as you go option
The good point that has been made is that there is a 15 page per month free option, and that seems like a doozie of a deal for someone like me. Just bear in mind the following:
so it's a straight 15 pages per month, you don't get unused allowance carried over:
Also the overage (charge for printing more than 15 pages)
and as has already been pointed out by doricell once you upgrade there's no coming back to this option:

Also remember folks as with any networked/WiFi printer after you have successfully setup the printer & connected to your computer, its good practice to change the IP address from automatic to manual.
First go to the network settings in printer menu & note the IP address, gateway and subnet mask down. Then change the mode from automatic to manual & enter the same numbers in their relevant sections. Doing this means after you restart the printer and/or the router, you should not have any connectivity problems.

Why do they make the INK so expensive. HP are one of the worse you can normally get there printers around £30 with a colour and a black then once they run out, the printer gets dumped and you have to buy a new one, the INK costs more than a whole new printer with the INK. I have a HP sat in the shed as the ink ran out and I was not paying the stupidly dear price to replace it. I am tempted as I need a printer but I know in 6 months it will join the one in the shed already.

Received my printer on schedule and set it up no problem.
BUT the quality of colour photo printing is very poor.
I printed from a 600x600dpi original on good quality glossy paper and set at the 'best' resolution but there is a green tinge around the edges of the subject and definite lines across the print.
I increased the dpi of the original to 1200x1200 but same result.
The green tinge and the lines are not visible in the original even at 400% magnification.
My previous printer was a HP3050A which printed the same picture, using the same paper and settings, without any problems.
I am waiting an answer from the HP forum.

Seems massively wasteful, given the amount of plastic used. Any environmental benefit from recycling the old ones will be negated by everyone throwing them away due to the insanely expensive ink.

Definitely agree with you because of the 6 months ink ( using referral code or more if refer people ) it's a good deal but if there's no cheap 3rd replacements after that it's likely end up binned which is daft, should just make ink cartridges more reasonable priced.

Just spoke with HP. HP instant ink customer service said if you opt for the 5 month trial, you can NOT go onto the free 15 pages per month plan at the end of the trial period. The reason given was that the 5 month trial period is a paid plan even though it has been offered as a no fee trial period, and you can not go from the paid plan to the free plan. (The HP contact number was 0207 6600 0596 but it connected to USA call centre.) Also I asked if my regular connection to the printer from the computer is via USB cable, but the wifi connection from the printer to the router is lost for a period, if the printer will still print as it is connected via USB. (The call to the USA call centre disconnected at this time and when I dialled the same number I eventually got connected to someone in UK this time and he said), you can still print but you will get messages telling you that the printer needs to connect with the wifi, he did not know how many days it would continue to print, but said it would eventually stop printing until the printer reconnected to HP.
It would have been really helpful if we had a definitive time period of how long you will be able to print until the printer stopped printing until it phoned home. This is one question I expected customer services to be able to find out when asked. If anybody has more info on this please post.

I appreciate that we will be on a 5 month free plan, but it clearly says on the HP page.
You cannot downgrade to the 15 pages for free after your offer has expired. You can upgrade and downgrade freely between the various paid plans but CANNOT downgrade to the free option. If you choose the free option at startup you will have to stick with it otherwise you will lose the possibility to go back to it

Well, not exactly 5 min setup, but worth it in the end I think. In case it helps anyone else, here are a couple of things I noticed during setup (I went for the 5546, but am guessing most of this is identical):-
When you get to the page where it is going to download the software for your machine, check bottom left of your screen as mine had defaulted to US - English. Just click and change to UK - English
When setting up your HP connected account, you will likely be prompted for your serial number. Mine was on the back of the printer - Wouldn't hurt to make a note of it now :-)
When setting up instant ink it will ask if you have an enrolment card. You don't, so just choose one of the plan options on the right of the screen. You don't have to choose the £7.99/mth as it does say a little later that up to 300 pages a month over plan will not be charged for during the trial, albeit I chose it anyway. The next screen will tell you that you have a free trial for that printer (Mine stated straight away that I had 9 mths free trial)
If you are going to enter a referral code, it is literally on the very last page, after you have entered your billing information, so don't worry if you haven't seen it when asked for card details.
When you have completed signup, it will give you a link you can use to refer a friend. The referral code is simply the last bit at the end of the link.
doricell
21 Nov 16#445

Don't see why they wouldn't continue. I bought the 5546 just to keep my son off my back so he can print out his college stuff. Even on 50 pages a month, I'd hardly call a couple of quid a month extortionate. That's only £24 a year, and not much different to compatibles on my Epson. I just want peace of mind and a quiet life, and this suits me down to the ground, so I'm staying even after the trial finishes.

Bear in mind, there's a £5 yearly charge to pay for Quidco that will initially be taken from any earnings you receive. Therefore only worth bothering with Quidco on this if you plan on using it in the future. You will still need to make another £1.50 towards your yearly fee before you start earning real money.

I read the terms and conditions and went for the 300 pages which depending on my usage I will downgrade to 50 pages per month at 1.99. If you choose the free option i.e. 15 pages you need to stay on it if you upgrade you CAN NOT go back to 15 pages. However HP reserve the right with 60 days notice to end the 15 free page offer. So it is not guaranteed to last indefinitely. Even after the trial 1.99 per month for 50 pages is £24 pound a year for 600 pages which I would use for colour printing.

Its simple business. The average printing consumer is put of by a high RRP of a printer, so the price for the produce is subsided with the premise that you they then get their money through cartridge sales. No wonder epson and HP etc over the years have gone to lengths, chipping cartridges etc to try to prevent the 3rd party consumable cartridge market. The upshot of high cartridge prices has actual help with the advent of chain businesses etc such as cartridge word.
Of course there are expensive printers that cost pence to run, but these are targeted to the high end or business consumer

Yeah I thought exactly the same but it says an additional 2 months and when you open the box it states 5 months so presume it is usually 3 months + an additional 2 months.
Hope that helps

I've just bought an HP Office jet printer with 5 month free ink trial. Even though I signed up to the lowest £1.99 (50 pages), this doesn't start until the 5 months is up. Therefore I get 300 pages to use each month until the trial finishes. I had my printer 1 week and I've received new ink cartridges already and I've only printed less than 70 pages. Hope this settles some confusion

I went for the 5546 with a 9 month free trial in the end (plus an additional 1 from one of the referrals on here, so 10 mths). I think the extra fee months pretty much cover the difference in printer cost. Just setting up now, but so far quite simple

Some absolute twaddle right there. I have an Epson printer, and I'm still getting this (albeit for my son), and will continue with the ink deal after the trial, and yes i do use compatibles with my Epson, and will continue to do so. It's a couple of quid a month, or maybe even the £3.49/mth deal to cover my sons college printing, and that is damn good value for money.
You also didn't point out that if printing is sporadic and your Epson is unused for a while you also risk the heads drying up and clogging, whereas with these the print heads are built into the cartridge and so get replaced every time.
Lots of factors go into what is right, but this absolutely is a deal, whatever you currently have.

Everyone is on the Instant Ink Bandwagon in this topic, I am not. I mean it's a pretty good offer from HP, for the first few months but what happens next? I never liked the "pay monthly schemes" and I do like to own what I pay.
So, the big question: Does it play nice with compatible cartridges or is it fully locked down? Obviously I do not intent to feed HP with absurd amounts of money for something that costs pennies.

Kind of goes against the whole notion of being a deals website really. People can get an extra month free, yet now the site doesn't want people to share those referral codes? Maybe they should just go in the vouchers section then, as it would be hard to argue that they don't belong in there setting at it is full of deal codes.

i understand the notion that affiliate links etc shouldn't be posted as in a similar way and individual can benefit from others purchase, so its similar. The think though for me is its for mutual benefit, everyone wins.
i understand there might be a desire for a thread to stay relevant and not just be pages of requests and people posting back codes. At least anyone requesting by PM keeps the discussion thread clean.

Just a side note here, I bought this printer but someone mentioned that it comes with a set of normal cartridges as well as the instant ink cartridges. 22 Nov 16#496

For anyone whos bought and received this printer, did you have trouble signing up to instant ink? I am unable to click on create account although it lets me through all the previous steps.

22 Nov 16#499
I recall reading suggestions that the cartridges should be removed and put in a zip-lock bag or tupperware box if they're not going to be used for a while, to stop them drying out, so if the print head is in the cartridge then doing this could protect that as well, which you can't do if the head is fixed in the printer. So to be fair, there actually may be a real benefit from having the head in the cartridge. Then again, if the scanner doesn't work without the cartridges installed it would be rather annoying to have to put them in each time I want to scan.

Ahh understood. I think @preecey meant that you should use up the ink before registering for the free trial, that way, once you start the free trial, you will be sent a new set soon after. Only problem is that you have 5 days from date of purchase (as mentioned by someone) to use them up before starting the trial so probably not enough time for most!
davidmaiden18183
22 Nov 16#502

Silly question then but did you get your claim code from your printer settings (I had a 5546 printer, but assume is pretty much the same process), which I then had to use to be able to create an account (Along with the printer serial number), and only then could I get to the instant ink bit.
Also, are you doing this from a pc or a mobile app? I 'think' i recall some people saying they had issues trying to do it through an app, but worked fine on PC.

Storing cartridges in their sealed pouches in a fridge is a good idea if you bulk buy. But make sure the kids don't open them thinking they are some sort of treat. This is especially a good idea if the weather gets hot or you live in a hot climate.

HI, I have a questions... 1st - I got printer from Currys and it had only 2 instant inks (not 4 as sugested - so there were not plain ones)- is it normal? (there is no box content or anything like that on or in the box) 2nd - how do I apply for 5months trial - do I need any code or anything ? thx

22 Nov 16#510
Just reserved this one locally as I find myself needing to print on thicker paper/card than a laser printer can handle. I had a look at the manual online but couldn't see a maximum paper weight that this could handle - don't suppose anyone knows do they?
ghostm4n
22 Nov 16#511
When you set the printer up online and register for instant ink it will automatically default to 5 months trial. After you have put in all your details, including your payment card details, the very last page will allow you to put in a refer a friend code which will then give you an additional month to make it 6.
ghostm4n
22 Nov 16#512
To be fair, it is sometimes possible to clean the inkjets/heads, and I have done so in my old Epson, but it is an awkward process to say the least, and can damage them. I 'think' it would be a lot easier to clean (or even simply replace) an HP cartridge than a built in head in an Epson. Point taken though about if the cartridge head dried up, but I've just never really seen that posted as an issue.
davidmaiden18183
22 Nov 16#513
You print out a sheet as part of setting up the printer and use the code as part of the setup. You will then be offered 5 months instant ink trial. You will need a friend referral code to make it 6 months free.

this is tempting however i have the HP 3050A 3 in 1 for the last few years it's done me well except the new ink carts dual pack costs £16 and only last a month or 2 of light printing so i don't think the deal would benefit me although i've added heat due to price of ink for 4 months.
ghostm4n
23 Nov 16#533
All depends on what you call light printing really. Assuming it was no more than 100 pages a month, then that would be £3.49/mth after the first 6 months. That is £7 for 2 months as opposed to your £16 for your dual cart. That means the printer would be paid for in 4 months even without the free trial? Factor in the free trial and it pays for the printer itself.
Quite frankly you could even step up to the Envy 5546 which is a better printer and comes with a 9 month ink trial (plus 1 mth refer a fried will get you to 10, and still be quids in.
Again though, all depends on what you term light printing.

I think the Quidco 10% cashback was only valid Fri 18-Sunday 20. Double check that the " extra 10%" quoted on Quidco is indeed referring to cashback and not to a random discount But I suggest you try Topcashback, I recall seeing a good cashback for Currys yesterday. I always toggle between these two sites every time I want to make a purchase online, to see which one is the highest payer!

whatdoidonow
23 Nov 16#537
Correct - the inks supplied with the printer are not part of the Instant Ink subscription, so HP send you a set of cartridges "within 10 days" to start the service. Swap out the cartridges when they arrive & store the others in an airtight container for emergency use. I expect the printer knows whether standard/XL or "Instant Ink" cartridges are installed so won't order more ink if you don't swap to the new carts.

Looks like I missed the 10% - 1.1% at Quidco, 1.15% at TCB
Suspect the save 10% link is just a claim that some items are reduced on the website - no sign of a code or reduction in the basket. Decided to go ahead anyway as my old printer is misbehaving; the £1.99/month contract should cover what I need most of the time and is a lot more convenient than discovering I've run out of cyan (and therefore can't print anything - not even B&W text with my current printer) the day before my kids' have to hand homework in!

How do you register for instant ink? I didn't seem to get any option. Is it on the printer's LCD screen or in a browser window on your PC. I've checked every option/screen on the small LCD display and can't see a thing except under the help screen, which just describes instant ink. Online I'm asked to "Enter your enrolment key in the field below. To find your enrolment key, gently scratch off the silver strip on the back of your enrolment card" *** Update *** It was there all along: select the "I haven't got a card" option, and pick the number of pages per month. It doesn't mention the free 5 months until you go onto the next screen. Problem solved!

ghostm4n
25 Nov 16#561
Milly, I'm definitely confused then, and this has been posted before in this thread also. It's certainly the impression that the words on the setup give. If anyone is still to set theirs up, it would be great if they could tell us what those words actually are, because that's certainly how it read to me.
I would venture that more than a few people in here have read those words in exactly the same way based on this thread. I opted for the 7.99/mth plan anyway, but don't want to mislead anyone else, so consider me educated now as to this aspect, and thank you for the clarification.
ghostm4n
25 Nov 16#562
So that would mean that people may as well choose the £7.99/mth plan, and the only thing they risk is if they want to drop down and forget to do so, or just don't bother to go change it ( Which I'm guessing the business case model for the trial is counting on anyway :-) ). But again, thank you for the clarification.

Also, I had to carry the printer from the shop to my house because of no delivery being available. There was a sign saying 10% off printers of 35 pounds or over, but the guy said that was for yesterday and the deal has expired, so I didn't get 10% off.

I've read most of the posts on this thread and I have a quick question: as I understand it, you can choose a 15-page pcm package which is free. Do you still need to provide credit card details if choosing this option, and does this last indefinitely or is it just for a set period of time?
TIA
jamsterr
27 Nov 16#581
I think you still need to provide that information because if you go over the 15 pages it's like £1 per 10 pages. And according to HP they can pull that offer whenever they want

Does anyone know if this printer is also known as 4523? i cant find it anywhere else but Argos do the 4523 and it looks identical. The instruction manual says 4520 series?

Looking at HP assistant it says HP ENVY 4524 All-in-One Printer

I believe it is identical in every way apart from the fact that 4524 is exclusive to currys, pc world.
millypede

Yes. The 4520 is the base model and any number that replaces the 0 on the end makes it unique in some way, months of instant ink, USB cable, colour etc

what's the photo quality printing like on this printer does anyone know ? thanks

28 Nov 16#587
Printer is very nice, touch screen and no fuss when setting up. One thing I will mention, the printer doesn't print very good quality pictures. When I was printing large pictures would often get a line through it where it didn't print properly, however I can't complain because of 5 months free ink
ghostm4n
28 Nov 16#588
Please don't buy this for photos. If you want photos look at something like the 5546. The print quality will be far better for photos and even though it is dearer the ink trial is longer at 9 months, so can completely offset the difference if you print a lot of photos.
cliosport65
28 Nov 16#589
Bit late for that bought already tried printing some photos today the quality was shocking that's why I asked the question :disappointed: although 5 months free ink should be OK if I can find some other things to print lol  not sure what yet though.

Worked for me when I bought a 6960 on the 26th. I had actually reserved it just before midnight on the 24th and the website said I could collect it from opening on the 25th until the end of the 26th but when I got there they couldn't find any sign of my order and when I showed them the e-mail they said as it was dated the 24th the reservation would have ended on the 25th.
Anyway, I went and got one of the shelf, took it to the normal till, mentioned the 10% discount code and explained that I'd reserved it in time but they'd mistakenly cancelled it and the lady typed in a long code from a sheet she had, saying it might not work anymore but it did

ghostm4n

Nope, it's only a 3 month trial with Argos on that one, so £15.98 to the bad vs the 5 month trial assuming you take the max ink offer, albeit somewhat offset by the internet security thing.

Just a heads up about the instant ink plans. I rang HP and they explained that whatever plan you choose, during the 5 month free trial, you will get 300 pages allowance per month. There is no point in choosing the most expensive plan during the 5 month trial and then downgrading to try and get any unused pages from the trial period to carry over because you will only be allowed to carry over the same number of pages that equate to the plan you choose, eg. if you choose the £1.99/50 page a month plan after the 5 month free trial, you will only carry over 50 pages.

The evening I set up the printer, I received an email to say new ink cartridges were on their way. I received them at the beginning of the week. I thought it was great service. The only thing that bothered me was that the box they came in didn't fit through the letterbox. So if I'm not in, I can't say I'll be thrilled if I have to keep driving up to the sorting office to collect every time. We shall see.

I got my first set couriered within a couple of days - wonder if it was because I had exhausted the colour starter ink on day 1.

This is for the 5564 with 9 months free, when selecting the £1.99 plan

Just about to setup my printer and I'm wondering what plan I should pick. If I choose the £7.99 plan for the trial can i change down to the £1.99 plan on the month I need to pay after trial finishes? Also do I need to have printer switched on all the time and connected to wifi or can I switch off?
davidmaiden18183

Yes you can change down to £1.99 (50 pages) after the trial. If you don't have your printer connected to your home network you would be seldom communicating with HP for them to understand your usage and send out new cartridges.

I went to print with this earlier and told it to print on both sides (flip on long edge). I expected to have to take the paper, open the tray, put it in the tray, press ok but in actual fact once it had printed it waited a few seconds (I expected for ink to dry) and the pulled the sheet back in and printed it on the other side.
Very impressive.

coming to the end of the "trial" now. It seems to suggest once you cancel the plan, the cartridges still working and you have to buy normal ones - is this the case?
ghostm4n
9 Aug 17#646
My understanding was that I could simply drop down to a lower plan if I want to, and do I will probably just drop to the 50 pages a month plan. Haven't used that most months, but for the cost that is still cheaper than buying a set of inks every year if I recall correctly.
cliosport65
10 Aug 17#647
If you cancel instant ink the cartridges will stop working, and will need to be replaced with normal ones. That said if you do the 50 page plan at 1.99 a month over the year it will work out cheaper than a normal set of ink cartridges

That was my take on it. Seemed like a no brainer to me.
Opening post
Just seen this on Currys & PC World websites -best price in the market from what I can see on this printer. It was £49.99 now £35 which is quite a good save for a printer of this value. Plus it has 5 months free trial of HP Instant Ink which you can cancel when the trial is up (think Netflix). Basically if you opted for the 300 pages per month plan then you would be getting £40 worth of ink so this is a BARGAIN! Reckon this will sell fast so if you are looking for a printer, this looks to be a cracker!
£3.50 cashback available via QUIDCO until Sunday too
All comments (650)
£8p/m for the 300 page plan, effectively meaning HP are giving you a fiver to keep the printer at the end.
Hot deal by the way, thanks OP will order one.
As it is for xmas will i get the 5months from when he first uses it?
Thanks
...and non of the photo-smart printers are included so perhaps not.
I've not bought any ink for 2 years, saved a small fortune.
Xmas present sorted
Good find!
No Bluetooth or fax facilities I'm afraid.
Yes, you can print photos from your iPhone thorough Apple AirPrint on small photographic paper.
When the 5 month free trial ends you can either:
1. Continue with HP Instant Ink at £1.99, £3.49 or £7.99 per month;
or
We very rarely print things in my household, but we are on the search for a Google Cloud printer for those odd occasions when we want to print from a Chromebook.
Laser only.
I've got a WF -7610DWF I got it dirt cheap from amazon & a full set of inks is £5.
Just stick with your Epson & buy 3rd party inks from Amazon/ebay/svp I always keep 2 full sets on hand they're so cheap it's not worth worrying about
Does the instant ink thing start automatically charging you when your five months is up?
Do the instant ink and standard ink cartridges replace each other physically or do they all have space at once? if all at once and you print say, 301 pages in a month, can it be told to use the instant ink for 300 and the standard ink for the final 1?
I had an HP DeskJet 840C back in 1998 and the cartridges definitely had print heads.
Loved that printer. Was really heavy though.
Does this offer come with the printer or do we add it at the end (the ink enrolment card for £3.49) ?
Ok i've just seen you get ink with it. thanks op
The charging period will automatically kick in after month 5, but you can cancel before this so you won't be charged.
While the printer is in 'Instant Ink mode', you can't use standard cartridges in it.
Tia
Under the plan tab on the account it says Promotion: 5 months available when upgraded to a paid plan... Do we just select 300 pg plan to activate this offer and charged once the 5 months is up?
:disappointed:
Anyone thinking getting one of these HP printers, get it if you can especially at this price
You don't have to sign up, it will come with normal ink cartridges anyway and then you can just buy ink as and when you need it.
You can print 500 pages per month, but HP only. Send cartridges when they physically run out. So all they'd send you is a black cart when yours ran out to sustain your dot printing.
1. You will always print close to the subscribed quantity
2. you are printing 90% photos or other high colour / saturation prints.
3. You believe Epson quality is too inferior for your needs.
I paid £100 for a Dell Colour Laser 1320C about 9 years ago, I have printed hundreds and hundreds of sheets. It has been with me between around 4 house moves bashed around and left for months at a time unused then used heavily. It is still on the original toners yet here it still sits in my junk room still working fine...
Some laptops I even had to completely nuke the printer from their machines (net stop / start spooler, delete client side rendering reg key, then delete printer from printmanagement.msc - not fun!). Probably would have been easier just to restore it!
But, warmth added just to get you up to 1000 degrees.
Kind regards..
Can I print photos from my iPhone through wifi i need small pictures not big A4 paper.
What happens after the 5 month ink and cartridge supply stops do we buy ourselves or they still supply.
How much are the cartridges and inks is it cheaper to buy it myself as I don't do too much printing so won't be using it that much just print photos
Plus I'm pretty sure that if you cease to subscribe to HP Instant Ink, the Instant Ink cartridges will refuse to print any more pages until you subscribe again. These cartridges are different to regular ones you find in the shops.
For example on the £1.99 a month plan, each additional 15 pages costs £1.
They won't send out new ink until you have nearly run out.
You are paying for a quantity of prints, not ink, in effect.
Month 1: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 90% left
Month 2: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 80% left
Month 3: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 70% left
Month 4: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 60% left
Month 5: Print 500 pages with just a "." - Black cart @ 50% left
You'll never be sent a new cart, because you haven't run out.
Now, in this example, 500 colour photos uses 40% of the black cartridge, and 60% of the colour:
Month 1: print 500 colour photos: Black 60%, Colours 40% left
Month 2: print 500 colour photos, Black 20%, Colours 80% left (they will have sent a new colour cart when your colour one was getting low)
Month 3: print 500 colour photos, Black 80%, colours 20% left (they will have sent a new black cart when your colour one was getting low)
etc etc etc.
Any way round this for a low user to take advantage of the additional ink cartridges that can be used later?
Again when we changed broadband provider, the Epson would not talk to the new router, took a age to sort.
And still get the same problem with this now , again l do not know why!
And then it will print what you wanted printing like a hour + later... mad.
[[b[/b][/b][b[/b]quote=preecey]Remember!

They are starter cartridges so will only last about 50 prints. The instant ink month starts when you put the new cartridges in.
For info on how HP Instant Ink works and the different plans, see here:
instantink.hpconnected.com/uk/…n/r

The cartridges included with this are the standard HP 302 cartridges with an average yield of 190 pages for black and 165 for colour.
....and yet most of the technology in other printers is made by HP as they own majority of patents for inkjet printing technology.
I have an older HP4500 on the £1.99 instant ink plan. Is this printer an actual upgrade or performance is the same? The £35 outlay equals about 17 months of instant ink on my current plan so the actual printer has to be better for it to make sense.
Hope someone knows!
also with the instant ink does the number of pages that you don't use in a month roll over to the next month?
I maybe print 200 a month, so need to go for 300 a month at 7.99. The eps on cartridge at about 18 lasts about 800-1000 so in this situation it could be twice as expensive. Plus if the printer prints virtually blank pages ( as often happens when you print emails or from online) your paying for nothing! Plus you need to actively monitor your situation so not to print over your allowance. It's all another big con in my mind - only very specific circumstances would yield you decent savings.
No idea if still the same though, so if anyone could clarify would be much appreciated.
I need a printer but not for another few months, so don't want to start the instant ink early.
HP will also email you when you are nearing your monthly limit to warn you,
"an Olympic sized swimming pool filled with printer ink would cost $5.9 billion (yes, with a "b")"

Plus, look at how good this looks compared to the basic looks of that HP boring printer.
Nah, go for the Epson and save bucketloads on the ink.
oO it jammed, up came 'paper jam' - used to have them years ago often.
Does anyone know if this model is the next one up from mine? (a better model) cos if so I'll buy this for £35, cancel my subscription and save around £17.45, in effect making this new printer just under £18!! Bargain!! (_;)
Heat added x
Once the trial ends you can continue on a month by month basis on the plan you've chosen for the trial, downgrade it to a lower plan, or cancel altogether and revert to buying cartridges as normal. You must be aware that if you do cancel, the Instant Ink cartridge that will be in your printer at the time, won't print out anything else even if it still has lots of ink left. You'll need to buy a regular cartridge.
Thanks xx

47 quid, not much more than I paid 5 years ago.
"This is the worst printer I've ever bought. Every time I print something, an advert appears to tell me to buy more ink. I'll never use HP again. "
If you cancel the subscription, they immediately disable the cartridges (as they are their property).
Also, does anyone know what happens if a cartridge gets blocked or goes faulty?
Does the printer notice a cartrige problem and order a replacement or do you have to phone customer services?
I just posted in excitement at the prospect of grabbing a bargain before scrolling thru the previous comments (soz) so not really worth getting then if it's just the same? and sorry to sound thick, millypede you said so no in short.... Erm was that no I wouldn't have a problem signing up again or no I wouldn't qualify? :stuck_out_tongue:
thank you again tho for being so helpful!
Yes, they are the same width as normal cartridges, just slightly longer.
It will clearly work for a Mac as it states it has Apple Print or whatever it's called, but there is zero mention of Google Cloud Print.
Good deal!
2 -hmmm... that worries me too. I guess it won't work as that would be a loophole. just turn off wi-fi and still print
He gets upset and moans about the printer, and my wife gets upset because he is upset, so then I get upset.
Son's printing £1.99/mth (or even £3.49/mth), but happy wife/life priceless!!!!!!!!!
Quite honestly i would have plumped for this anyway with or without, as I like the instant ink idea, but if there is free period I'll take it. Can i for example choose the £7.99/mth option and then just drop down to whatever usage ends up being after 5 months?
Much appreciated, Ken.
Just wasn't sure if perhaps the free trial would nullify the recommendation option.
And is there any kind of counter that you can use/view to track your usage?
Cheers.
I'd like to get this as a gift for someone
Edit: I'm daft. Ignore.
To provide so little ink in the cartridges that come with it.......I need to urgently print around 100 pages this weekend - is there a retail outlet I can go to where I can swap my cartridges ?
Dave
Iv got the HP 6700 AIO but was using unofficial ink, randomly installed a HP update on the PC and it then blocked use of this cartridges leaving me printer-less. They got me where they wanted me.
I resigned to defect by having to purchase this printer, with the free 5 month trial, i'm hoping I can get one over on them.
Hey-ho
PS..5 months calendar appoint for cancellation already setup
The question I haven't been able to get an answer for anywhere is if I print something and it comes out streaky (which happened the other day only it wasn't an important thing so didnt bother reprinting) , hence need to clean the head and reprint, I presume it's counted as two pages when really it should only count as one? And if I need to print as part of the head cleaning proces (will at least want a test page to make sure striping is fixed) again will that count as another page of my allowance
All set up - it says free printing until April 2017.
Dave
I don't think you'll be able to pause the trial in any way, millypede will confirm this however as he/she works for HP.
I also believe if you drop down the plan to the £1.99 option, the 300 pages rolled over will also drop to just 50, again something millypede will need to confirm.
1. The same amount from the previous month, or any pages you havent used, so if you are on 50pp and use 20, you get 30 roll over pages the next month, if you dont use it for two months you will have 100 pages to use.
2. No doesnt work like that.
3. No, but you can cancel it and re-start it later, but you will not get any free months.
set up all ok.
Printed about 10 sheets and now have ink low message - lines and blotches on anything I try and print now ??
Are the cartridges that come with it £starter" ones ? Do I have to wait for some to be posted out to me now ?
I have a lot of printing to do over the weekend.........am I doing something wrong ?
Dave
yes i followed the instuctions and still i i dont see this option, i will ask in HP support. If they don't help me i will send it back. I never had a dealing with such nasty, unstructured software.
ORIGINAL - flickr.com/pho…24/
PRINTED - imgur.com/a/Y…PnB
I'd say the print is slightly warmer and underexposed in comparison to the original (perhaps to do with how it displays on-screen, the photo wasn't processed for printing first) but the sharpness and detail are very good. On the whole it's pretty acceptable for what is essentially amateur printing. Hope this helps people who are still weighing it up.
I bought a Canon MG5350.
Best. Inkjet.
Although I'm not going for the instant ink offer, seems like a pain
On the finest setting im getting streaks in heavy black areas, due to the poor quality print heads.
For the money it's great due to the 5 months trial, but its no good for photo printing which makes the subscription very expensive post-trial for basic printing of 5% coverage black text (i.e. documents).
there are two parts to it, the cost and then getting new ink.
The cost
You select how many pages you want to print per month (for the trial just select the top one and over 5 months you will get an idea for how many pages you can print out - make sure to drop down before you start paying).
The ink
The printer monitors ink levels automatically, it also monitors how much your using it.
2)while its a bit of a waste HP remotely killing the inks when you cancel the service you cant really blame them for doing it.
all in all i think its a brilliant deal
i tested it on mine and works really well - going to be a handy feature for printing out quick recipe etc
Despite the 2000+ heat, this is still a bottom of the line budget printer which produces very mediocre results. Value for money wise it's good - but don't confused that with quality. This isn't some unique printer thats £35 and produces results that a £300 will. The quality and speed is in line with the £35 price.
currys.co.uk/gbu…tml
Don't pay attention to this post and the people, it has turned into sheep mentality. There must be thousands of people that have seen the 2000 heat and bought because they think its s a bargain. It's only a £15 saving from RRP on a bottom of the line budget printer..
£5 for 6 months of printing even if you throw away the printer after 6 months is still a good deal
Everyone should be selecting the £7.99 option, which you can then move to the free deal after 5 months. But if you go over 15 a month they will charge you a lot...
Yes, they do mate
Pros: paper tray hides under the printer neatly.
Not too loud
Fast scanner
One click setup for mac
You can run the whole setup from your smartphone
It was a bit tricky to figure out the 5 months trial.
1. You have to click on the HP instant ink button on your smartphone and just continue through to the process of setting up the account.
2. Choose your options of 50, 100 or 300 pages per month, don't click on the redemption option.
3. Next it will ask you to setup web features on the printer and assign an email address which is the same code it will ask you to activate the 5 month trial.
Even if you choose the lowest instant pack it still allows you to print 300 pages per month for the 5 months free trial
Loving the printer so far, let's see how long this lasts.
The printer I had prior to this one was also an Epsom and lasted for 15 YEARS all of the cartridges that were used in that were 3rd part ones.
Can you please tell me exactly which kind of epson you have if i try to find Epson 3 IN 1 Printer Scanner is a lot there in amazon and diferent prices what about type for cartrige which type you use
Taking it back tomorrow.....
Ordered for airprint heat added. I only print like once or twice a year max ten sheets from home if I am lucky was hoping to just stick to the normal cartridge after trial
Now I know you can upgrade immediately in any given month but I've not read the T&Cs thoroughly as to whether you can cancel with immediate effect or whether you have to give notice. Hope this helps somewhat
I didnt need a new printer but took this for the instant ink offer.
Does anyone have paper recommendations please?
im wanting to produce flyers/promo items for our shop. So a thin photo or poster paper would be great.
I'll post anything i find too of course.... toddles of to search.
thanx op x
It's Up to 4800 x 1200 with HP photo paper
I have a HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Printer, which I think is a cracking printer, and it too only prints colour upto 4800 x 1200
ebay.co.uk/sch…t=0
ideally you are looking for a printer (Epsom all in one) that uses 4 cartridges, so look at the model number the various cartridge are for and then search for the printer to find which one will suit. hope that helps
That's a pretty large printer. Larger than my HP Officejet all in one that's a few years old now.
Was going to order one for my mum but I know she'll say it's too big for her little workstation desk
Check before you buy
That it costs £35 for the printer? See the Op
That you can continue to print 15 copies per month free, once the free 5 months are up? Read the T&C's I linked to above. It is explained in black & white. If you want it explaining for you just ask.
First go to the network settings in printer menu & note the IP address, gateway and subnet mask down. Then change the mode from automatic to manual & enter the same numbers in their relevant sections. Doing this means after you restart the printer and/or the router, you should not have any connectivity problems.
That is what i intend to do anyway
Ah Youve mentioned Monday it must be out of stock like you say due to the sudden popularity of it
Any cheap deals on photo paper (A4 or A5)?
Not sure about photo paper deals tbh sure someone will help soon
Although my box did say 5 yet it might be related to purchase date and model
Never mind, just saw it on last page, cheers.
You get 5 month free ink as standard but towards the end of the sign up bit it mentioned a referral code so i entered one from a member here then it upgraded to 6 then.
(The HP contact number was 0207 6600 0596 but it connected to USA call centre.)
Also I asked if my regular connection to the printer from the computer is via USB cable, but the wifi connection from the printer to the router is lost for a period, if the printer will still print as it is connected via USB.
Here
When you get to the page where it is going to download the software for your machine, check bottom left of your screen as mine had defaulted to US - English.
The referral code is simply the last bit at the end of the link.
no you cannot downgrade to the free plan after the trial. But you can of course unsubscribe from the instant ink plan altogether and buy normal cartridges
Having issues at the stage of Choose a software option
The software is searching for available software and keeps saying it cant find anything.
Have tried suggestions in manual (reset router then printer then turn back on same order) but no joy
any help massively appreciated
thanks in advance
Personally I would use a new browser for quidco so to be sure you have no history/cookies stored e.t.c
Also disable ad blocker. Keep quidco open when on currys website once purchased the tracking should show within a few hours
hope this helps
I havent bought a printer for a while but to me this is a good standard £50 printer let alone at £35 with the free months
If anybody would like a code please pm and thanks to the forum member who gave me one earlier
Can someone send me a referral to get the extra 1 month trial.
Of course there are expensive printers that cost pence to run, but these are targeted to the high end or business consumer
Hope that helps
Hope this settles some confusion
I am really really really sorry
You also didn't point out that if printing is sporadic and your Epson is unused for a while you also risk the heads drying up and clogging, whereas with these the print heads are built into the cartridge and so get replaced every time.
Lots of factors go into what is right, but this absolutely is a deal, whatever you currently have.
So, the big question: Does it play nice with compatible cartridges or is it fully locked down? Obviously I do not intent to feed HP with absurd amounts of money for something that costs pennies.
I'm sure people will send PM's for them though when asked.....
i understand there might be a desire for a thread to stay relevant and not just be pages of requests and people posting back codes. At least anyone requesting by PM keeps the discussion thread clean.
It seems ghostm4n's and my posts about the printer head drying up got deleted accidentally, so I'll quote them again.
Even so, if you don't use the printer for a while and the heads dry up/clog then you can't print, so how would you use the cartridge up to get the new one sent out?
There's a link that says "Enjoy an extra 10% off hundreds of products and free delivery on all orders" but no code and when I try to pay it's asking me for £35...?
Am I missing something?
Also, are you doing this from a pc or a mobile app? I 'think' i recall some people saying they had issues trying to do it through an app, but worked fine on PC.
1st - I got printer from Currys and it had only 2 instant inks (not 4 as sugested - so there were not plain ones)- is it normal? (there is no box content or anything like that on or in the box)
2nd - how do I apply for 5months trial - do I need any code or anything ?
thx

Call 0345 270 4142 (Check what 0345 will cost you first though), or the landline number i had yesterday was

I was worried as I hadn't seen an option to enter a referral code and I was already at payment card details, but it's actually on the page after that anyway.

You cant ask in a post, people cant give one over in a post but can you PM any of those like me who have set up the printer and have them? Maybe....... I don't know if thats in the HUKD rule book or not. Its private so maybe different
Quite frankly you could even step up to the Envy 5546 which is a better printer and comes with a 9 month ink trial (plus 1 mth refer a fried will get you to 10, and still be quids in.
Again though, all depends on what you term light printing.
Double check that the " extra 10%" quoted on Quidco is indeed referring to cashback and not to a random discount
But I suggest you try Topcashback, I recall seeing a good cashback for Currys yesterday. I always toggle between these two sites every time I want to make a purchase online, to see which one is the highest payer!
2- already replied by other users
Suspect the save 10% link is just a claim that some items are reduced on the website - no sign of a code or reduction in the basket.
Decided to go ahead anyway as my old printer is misbehaving; the £1.99/month contract should cover what I need most of the time and is a lot more convenient than discovering I've run out of cyan (and therefore can't print anything - not even B&W text with my current printer) the day before my kids' have to hand homework in!
No sign of any ink being shipped on my account yet either!!!!
Ordered !! Hot !!!
I would venture that more than a few people in here have read those words in exactly the same way based on this thread. I opted for the 7.99/mth plan anyway, but don't want to mislead anyone else, so consider me educated now as to this aspect, and thank you for the clarification.
Can I purchase some hp cartridges and carry on printing until the instant ink gets delivered??

Do it online and I tried getting it on Friday, he finally accepted and got 10% off
Worth trying
Also, I had to carry the printer from the shop to my house because of no delivery being available. There was a sign saying 10% off printers of 35 pounds or over, but the guy said that was for yesterday and the deal has expired, so I didn't get 10% off.
TIA
Anyway, I went and got one of the shelf, took it to the normal till, mentioned the 10% discount code and explained that I'd reserved it in time but they'd mistakenly cancelled it and the lady typed in a long code from a sheet she had, saying it might not work anymore but it did
Thanks
I had a message to say it was on its way and it arrive about a week later.
I got a secondary shipment notification the other day so expect to have another set of cartridges soon as well. This is good as I plan to print 1800 pages over the next 6 months and may need lots of ink.
I have printed 228 pages since buying it 3 weeks ago - and this has required 3 lots of instant ink !!
Surely it cant use that much - only normal pages - not high quality photos.
Dave
Free trial 9 months - 50 pages per month free
This is for the 5564 with 9 months free, when selecting the £1.99 plan
You can downgrade at any point right, so there's no problem in selecting the higher plans?
Edit:
"Charges for additional pages will be waived for up to 300 pages per month during your 9 months of free trial."
Cool
Should there be an enrolment card with code inside?
I don't have one?
It seems a good idea - but badly flawed if it doesn't work.
Dave
Very impressive.
