I really want to like these but the price is almost double the previous versions, the internal hardware RAID is rubbish and by the time you've kitted it out with a load of drives it costs a fortune. My jury is still out...

Wouldn't an i3-3240 do that for you? They can be had for £25-50 and makes for a decent upgrade. The only thing you lose out on is VT-d for a hypervisor, although if you haven't even been using a hypervisor before then nothing lost anyway!
My main concern is disks, I have a plethora of different disks to put in mine and I can't decide which ones to use yet!
I opted to buy my server from Ebuyer instead as I paid for next day delivery to a nearby shop that's open 24/7

Low end laptops for domestic use typically last about 3 years @ a few hours usage per day.
The microserver is a commercial product designed to be running 24/7.

Biggest draw for me personally is the ability to boot from internal usb with ESXi and virtualise Xpenology and/or any other server I want/need using up to 32TB of internal storage.

anyone seen good deals for memory upgrades on this server? I'm after an 8G stick to go with the 4G already installed.

Could someone tell me in a nutshell why these are better than a low powered laptop / nuc etc with a couple of external hard drives? Cheers

No worries! :stuck_out_tongue:
For a backup I would either opt for a 2 bay synology NAS or go with a micro server like this one (you can install a modded version of Synology's DSM onto the HPE Proliant Gen 8 too). Depends what other features you want and also depends if you can get a deal by buying the NAS with the hard drives as a bundle. Basically, get anything that can do RAID 1 and rebuild easily when one of the hard drives fail.
Also, I just found the WD Red 2TB Hard Drives are £79.90 on the same site. If you ordered 2 of these with this, you could also use the Which? £20 Off offer. Gives you a micro-server with 2 x 2TB for £267.88
If you do the Which? Promo on this website, make sure you cancel it afterwards! Info about the promo is here

I have a Lenovo TS140 that I only used for a week. Changed job and the company gave me Dell W540 so don't need it anymore. Anyone interested in buying can message me. I put 16GB RAM in it as well (Xeon E3-1226 v3 3.3GHz and 1TB hard drive). I'll take £200 for it.

Im in the same boat, looking for a NAS that has the processor to handle HEVC files but thinking I'm going to have to either a) stick with my current Shield setup, or b) opt for a Mac Mini with a good processor!

I have had N54L and now a Gen8 and I have to say Gen8 is much MUCH better. The CPU is faster (twice the speed) and more efficient, not only that but it's upgradable too. In fact everything about it is better than the old model once you get used to it.
The killer feature on this Gen8 is iLO, once you get using it you won't be able to imagine managing a server without it!
A lot of people who are not so used to servers and their purposes think of it as just another pc/workstation that is used to backup their files. They don't have it "always on", and want to boot/reboot it frequently. If this is you then I would NOT recommend Gen8 as it takes a bit of a while booting up as it does various checks that cannot be disabled. Also the internal fan cannot be easily replaced and if you add a Gfx card for example, and wanna push it, the fan will be quite noisy. Some may wanna use this as a HTPC because of it's dimensions, but it's probably not the best idea due to the reason above.

Build quality on the T20 is much higher than the average DIY case you'd get for that sort of cash. HP custom makes a ton of stuff for these (hence the lower value prospect).
For what you actually get (and can expand to) the T20 is objectively better.

Cool thanks! Next question then... would this be my best bet to backup photos using freenas or so, or just plump for a cheap single external drive?
Ready made nas seems expensive.
The micro server route would give more flexibility and protection from failed drive with raid 1, over a single external.
I only have one desktop to backup so don't necessarily need network functionality.
Basically need someone to make my decision for me
Anyhow sorry for highjacking your post op, gave heat, and hopefully the extra comments will bring people in :sunglasses:

These aren't nearly as good value as the older n54l unit. At this money I'd be looking at the Dell T20.

What makes you say that? I heard the dells aren't in the same league build quality wise?

I think it's the processor in this that put me off this. I needed something that would be comfortable with x265 (HEVC) playback and from what I found this wouldn't cut it
I was leaning towards the Dell but then the Prime day Shield deal came on so ended up just coupling that with my N40L instead of replacing it

Very tempted by this, but can I justify it so near to Xmas? The internal battle is raging.
