I have a Seagate NAS which keeps undocking from my MAC and thinking of upgrading to this? Would be the best HDD to add to it?

Some WD reds are always a good bet. Cheapy desktop drives will be fine for a bit but then they break and make you cry. If you can, RAID them up. Could then back it all up to your NAS just incase

I am on my second HP Microserver with this the gen 8 my second server now and they are a great bit of kit. I upgraded the CPU to a Xeon 4 core and 16Gb ram and runiing Windows server 2012 it never misses a beat.

nope, if your a paid Plex sign up for the beta. sign up for amazon cloud drive, start uploading yer films. should be sometime this year hopefully :smiley:

tempted to grab this. my Seagate central NAS died 2 days ago after basically 2 and a half years always on. Or do I just grab a cheaper NAS like the wd red... argh!

One more thing, 3) Monthly subscriptions suck for this kind of thing. Eventually when you want to stop paying you have all your stuff in the cloud and have to download tons of data and still need somewhere to store it. Cloud as a BACKUP is a fantastic solution but as the main server it wouldn't really suit me unless I have a local backup, and in that case this will still be useful...

I think this is a good deal.
I've been using a QNAP for years as backup but it's now getting full so I have ordered one of these to increase capacity.
From experience I would use WD red HDDs and configure them in RAID. I originally had standard Seagate discs but these have each failed in turn.
RAID loses some capacity but to simply pull out the faulty drive, plug in a new one and let the server fester until the array has rebuilt makes it so easy; with added peace of mind.

Would this be much of an upgrade over an N40L? I find Plex sometimes struggles on that when serving up larger MKVs.

Are you using it to transcode too, mine stills serves blu ray remuxs and ISOs perfectly so can't find a proper reason to replace it :smiley:

Amazon is still doing the 20% off student deal on Warehouse products. I bought 2x2TB + 1x1TB WD Red. The 2 TB ones were nearly new (26 hours run time) the 1 TB was new. Today is the last day for this offer.

I've also upgraded the CPU to an i3 for £35 from ebay and added 16 GB of RAM, again Amazon Warehouse for £64 ish

Claiming the cashback was easy, sent in the form and received an email a couple of days later saying I will receive my cheque soon. Bought it from ebuyer

I've installed ESX on it and at the moment only running a Windows 2012 server on it with 3 virtual disks linked to the 3 physical disks. I disabled the RAID as it is not really a backup system. Setup backup tasks in W2012 instead, in case something goes wrong ...

I could actually feel the difference in power between N54L and Gen8 so I would say it would be a good upgrade from N40L.

Just to let you know beforehand, adding a graphics card will probably make the system fans spin louder. I had a fanless Radeon in mine and the fans went from silent to very audible.

I've got two N36L's and an N40L! Still working great, admittedly one of the N36L's is on under 10 hours usage (impulse buy), but the other N36 & N40L have had a lot of use, all 6 years old.

I sold N54L after buying Gen8. I always wonder whether I should have kept it, everyone seems to have 2 or 3 of these Microservers, but why would a home need more than one? Surely the whole point of having one is to keep everything in one place? :smile:

limited your risk if something was to happen to one of the servers. personally my n54l is used as a media server running plex , on 24/7/365. could do with the extra CPU power for plex and as I do simple web browsing time to time and with 10+ tabs open it maxes.
