Need a printer for printing my photographs but not sure something this cheap will do a good job? Any recommendations.? Or am I wrong...

In my experience, the lower-end HP printers are not fantastic for printing photographs.
I did have a mid-range HP Photo printer a few years back and that did do a good job, but was expensive to run.
I can recommend the Canon MG/Pixma series printers - the ones with the 4-digit numbers rather than 3 - as most include duplex (both sides) printing, have a separate cartridge for each colour (cheaper to replace) and give very good print quality (I have the MG5250). These can be had for between ~ £45 and £65.
Compatible cartridges are cheap too and work perfectly - try Prink online - I pay £7 for a full set of 5 cartridges.
Hope that helps!

Folks, if you are likely to be able to use the £7.99/mth plan, I would strongly recommend you consider the Envy 5546 from Currrys. It is a dearer printer (But better quailty prints), but the instant ink trial is 9 mths as opposed to 5, so if you actually use the £7.99/mth deal it almost pays for the difference anyway.
Again all down to preference, but please do take a look and just do the maths before you buy. A number of people in the other thread said they would have gone for the 5546 if they had know about the longer trial. I went for it, the printer is great, and I have 10 mths free trial thanks to an extra month from a refer a friend code.

OK, I'm a little confused by the instant ink thing. Can someone clarify for me please? Am I right in thinking that:
1) There are 2 packs of ink in the box you can use straight off that are not in the `instant ink` scheme? I presume colour and black?
2) There is a box of `instant ink` in the box as well?
3) You have to register and activate the `instant ink` service when you insert the cart.?
4) Once registered you select a usage level? 1= £1.99 for 50 pages 2=£3.49 for 100 pages 3=£7.99 for 300 pages
5) The £7.99 option is the best value even if you don't use that much as the pages roll over to the next month
6) Do they roll over for more than 1 month (eg 5 months of 300pages =1500 pages) and if so do you loose them all as soon as your trial ends or are the pages honoured? So what I am trying to say is, if this was 5 months that you had paid for rather than the free trial, yet you hadn't used the ink so decided to end the contract, would you continue to get cartridges until you had actually printed 1500 pages? or would you just loose whatever had rolled over at the point of contract termination?
7) After `instant ink` can you go back to standard carts without any problems?
8.) And lastly, to save me searching as my lappy is running like a dog with no legs, are compatable carts or refill inks available and reasonably priced for this printer?
I know I am asking a lot, but my head and laptop are just not working today and I'm struggling to get my brain around this. Thank you in advance. x

25 Nov 161#30
1) YES, there are 2 packs of ink in the box you can use straight off regardless of whether you join the `instant ink` scheme, colour and black?
2) NO, there is no extra box of `instant ink` in the box as well. Once you have registered for the instant ink trial, I believe that they will send you some carts. I got my email to say they were being shipped within 2 days, and had printed nothing.
3) NO, you do not HAVE to register and activate the `instant ink` service when you insert the carts (Because you may not want the trial), BUT if you want the instant ink trial, you need to sign up for it within a few days of activating the printer is my understanding. I'm assuming if you want the instant ink trial, you will simply sign up immediately.
4) YES - Once registered you select a usage level? 1= £1.99 for 50 pages 2=£3.49 for 100 pages 3=£7.99 for 300 pages
5) YES - The £7.99 option is the best value even if you don't use that much as the pages roll over to the next month
6) NO - They do not roll over for more than 1 month. I *think* you would have the last months worth of pages that rolled over, but that would be it. At absolute best you would get 300 pages roll over on the last month and only for one month. After that, any rollover would have disappeared
7) I THINK SO - After `instant ink` I would assume you can put normal cartridges in, BUT, cartridges are not cheap, so do the maths of buying new carts over say the £1.99/mth plan. Personally I think the plan is a better deal, even on the lowest level.
8.) HELL NO - LOL, Compatibles for these have never been cheap to my knowledge. If you are looking to run with compatibles, Epson is usually a better bet, but, the lower level plan usage for me still trumps the compatibles. I ahve an Epson as it is and have just bought the HP Envy 5546 with a 9 month free trial. Pros and Cons of Genuine vs compatible, and often down to usage. As an example though, if I buy a set of good compatibles for my Epson (Ones I trust), I am looking at about £3.50/cart for all 4 carts, so tends to vary between £14-£16 a throw. If I do that twice a year, that's dearer than the £1.99/mth deal on 50 pages, and cheaper than the £3.49 deal for 100 pages/mth.
This deal is on page count, not ink usage, so if you are printing a lot of photographs, I would venture that this is a far better deal than compatibles.

1. They are both a instant ink cartridge and a normal cartridge and will behave which ever way you want them to depending if you take advantage of the Instant ink trail.
2. No - Just a Colour and Black instant ink enabled cartridge, or a setup cartridge.
3. Yes as above.
4. Yes pick a plan that you would like, always choose the 300 pages as this will give you an idea of how many pages you printer per month for you to make a informed choice at the end of the 5 month trail.
5. Yes
6. No only rolls over from the previous month.
7. Yes
8. No, not compared to the cost of instant ink v's compatible.

Got it for around this price with the Quidco cashback when the deal was posted about a week ago. Nice printer, does everything I need it to do especially duplex printing and scanning, my favourite bit is when you press print on your device the printer swings out an arm printer tray. Got 6 months of the instant ink after the refer a friend thing so am happy with my purchase.

Based solely on comments from the other thread, i would say don't go for this for Photographs. Take a look at something like the 5546, or read reviews for others. The 5546 is dearer yes, but has a 9 month trial and for me the additional months offset the extra cost of the printer.

Just been to local Currys to buy this printer. The HP rep was there and I asked him what happens at the end of the 5 months if I decide to cancel the pay monthly cartridges. He said that HP would send a kill command to the printer cartridges which would stop them operating. I would then have to buy a set of standard cartridges to continue using the printer. He explained that the monthly replacement cartridges contain sensors which communicate with HP to determine when replacement cartridges are required.
On the plus side he offered me a referral code to extend the deal to 6 months.
