Where did the comment made by edecio go then?!? That is very sad btw. I'm glad the mods sussed you out.
Anyway, threads dead thanks to Pinocchio, or is it Jay from the Inbetweeners? Who knows.

Ah assumption...it makes a *** out of you. I am indeed a student. However, I'm a PhD student in HPC (sponsored) so whilst I did all those things in 1999 I prefer to work and relax in the comfort of my own home (that I own) when not at university. I'm well aware of how to use all the things I own but your solution isn't very good if a solution at all vs firestick with KODI. This isn't a comment on chromecast just that it is not a very good solution for KODI, and it only works with android devices. The audio and video quality was also terrible vs a standalone device when casting because the whole point of casting is it usually streams from the cloud...bar screen mirroring it was never designed for this reason. The key problem is that your advice is plain bad!

This is all getting rather boring. Subtitles and audio options work fine on Chromecast. Removing/adding playercorefactory.xml via Complete Kodi Setup Wizard takes 10 seconds blah blah blah....Learn how to use your own gadgets dude.

I have often wondered what students spend their grants on these days. It use to be night's out in the Student Union, Student night at the local night club, late night drinking sessions, Rugy/Football/sports tours and take outs. Apparently, for some, now it's three flat screens and six Hi-Fi units to accommodate devices that they don't really know how to use. God only knows how all that kit is crammed into a tiny dorm or a bedroom in a shared house. Must look like mission control, but without any techies

johnboid- thanks for originally sharing this deal with us. It's a shame that the thread has been hijacked slightly.

I wonder if there is there a Chromecast for Dummies yet? It's not my bag, but some users on here may find it helpful.

Fair enough using a workaround you can cast using allcast and the workaround but you really aren't getting the full KODI options like audio options... subtitles. Basically you are limited by the allcast app unlike a firestick.

I take it you didn't install the mindfulness app on your Fire Stick then:p
You bought all those devices, 14 months before the rest of us and still didn't realise how easy it was to watch Kodi on your TV with a Chromecast. I'm not saying a word.:stuck_out_tongue:

At the end of the day, most people just care about the end result i.e. getting Stuff on their TV. Whether this is by casting, or installed on a standalone device it doesn't really matter. It's £18 after all.
You originally said that the only way to view Kodi on a TV with a Chromecast is to mirror the screen of your device. Thus making the Fire Stick superior. I merely pointed out that you don't have to do this. You can quite simply cast to your Chromecast and free up your device. I also provided details of how to do this easily for anyone who was interested.

Plenty of debate about which device is better. And at the end of the day it's down to personal choice. If you love the Fire Stick then bully for you. Like I said though, this is a thread about the Chromecast. If you are going to jump on a thread and praise another, more expensive, device then it might be worth checking the facts before misleading people about the, incorrect, limitations of the Chromecast.

Anyway, I'm off to look for the Fire Stick remote so I can manually input all the add-ons... If only there was a TV and movie add on pack that I could install with just one click.

Sky Go doesn't work on any of them. It doesn't even work on Fire Stick if you side load it because Sky block mobile OS devices via HDMI. In fact, ironically the only mobile OS devices that is does work on like that are jailbroken iPhones where you can Airplay or use HDMI out.

I had an imported Chromecast 1 4 months before it was available in the UK and I own 6 Chromecast Audios so I think I know how they work...for the last time YOU CANT INSTALL KODI ON A CHROMECAST! You can install it on your phone! I love the 3 Chromecast Video I own but they aren't as good as a Fire TV stick...the very fact you don't know the difference between install or mirror or cast shows you don't have a clue! Shown me how easy it is to install KODI on a Chromcast if you only own an Apple device then? I don't usually get annoyed but it is actually you giving people bad advice! The one advantage I see of Chromecast is when Google Home launches and you can say cast to x chromecast which you can't do currently with FireStick and Echo.. There was even a thread on KODI on both (yes it is old but still correct) so you can educate yourself...

Who cares if it's standalone? End result is content on your TV. Also works fine with a PC. How long does it take you adding all the Kodi addons to a fire stick? I see that people are selling fire sticks on ebay at double the price because they have loaded Kodi on them. A six year old could cast Kodi to a Chromecast.

Had a play with the fire stick for the last couple of days now and can say that it is limited by comparison in what you can do with it. It also costs more. I'm going to have another good play with it when I manage to figure out where the tiny remote control is hiding. If only I could control it with my phone....Now there's a thought.

Chromecast is £18. Easy to install Kodi, unlike the fire stick, you don't have to mirror the screen, as you originally misled people to believe, and will cast pretty much anything you can throw at it. It works with a PC, you can search kodi, whilst watching Kodi or BBC1 or whatever.

This is a thread about the Chromecast after all.
If you didn't know how to use your Chromecast properly then it's a little unfair to mislead people and say that the Fire stick is a lot better when clearly it isn't. It just offers a slightly different way of doing a similar thing for more money and gives you a teeny tiny remote control.

If your TV has the same features then fine. TV manufacturers have a habit of not supporting SmartTV apps. Why pay hundreds of pounds extra for these features in a TV which you can't update? Makes much more sense to put the "Smart" into a smaller item you can replace every year.

Yes. This is my main use using since getting chromecast.
I purchased this for £25 a few months ago and would say I have watched 20+films & more tv shows with no issues at 720 quality.
Sound quality is the only issue as speech can get drowned out a little (nothing a sound bar cannot correct).
Thinking of getting a couple more for family & cheap enough for secret santa.
I would definitely recommend as kodi firestick is good if u have the know-how to handle regular issues.
No such issues on this as all controlled from the phone. Can still use phone while casting from Showbox.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ClockworkMod-AllCast-for-Fire-TV/dp/B00JHMPP9S

Looks like Alcast doesn't like the fire stick according to reviews. So maybe not so easy to cast content as Chromecast.

So to sum up, for less money Chromecast can do everything that fire stick can, is able to cast content from multiple devices, installs Kodi and all TV addons i.e. movies and TV series in minutes with a few clicks of your Android screen and has a user friendly keyboard via your PC or Android.

Think I'll get a fire stick

Fire Stick - Slow & clunky but a great streamer & good to play on the odd game.
Chromecast - Superior streamer, faster if you have a decent phone.

I don't stream dodgy quality vids so the Fire Stick is out for me.
I do stream local high quality media though, this is where my Chromecast 2.0 works beautifully.

I'll pass on the Ultra unless it's dirt cheap.

I use VLV media player for Android, cast screen as normal then use VLC as media player and it auto recognises that you are screen mirroring so doesn't play it on the phone which keeps phone from getting hot / slow.

It also has the ability to quickly adjust for any audio delay.

cantonbean
23 Nov 16 #66
So yes you still have to run it from your phone and can only do it from an android phone. You can Cast most things to a fire stick as it has AllCast and airplay apps you can install. And side load KODI means not tied to a mobile device as it works as a standalone. You can't install KODI directly onto a chromecast. Articles with that title are wrong!

No screen Mirroring going on with mine.

Just install Complete Kodi Setup Wizard free via the Play store on your android device.

Your text here

Fully installs Kodi, all the addons (yes including all movies and TV shows) you will probably ever need and the Chromecast casting option in a few simple clicks.

Fully able to use your device for calls, browsing, games, queuing up Kodi content etc whilst Kodi is playing on your TV. Nice easy Android keyboard to input with. Not sure if the up down left right on screen Amazon keyboard would suit some people. As I said before, I haven't used the Fire Stick. I don't think you are able to cast music, videos, photos Google + content from your phone to a fire stick out of the box. That's obviously something the Chromecast excels at.

Having just read through a couple of the guides for installing Kodi on a Fire Stick. I would say that the Chromecast is by far the easiest and fastest way (using the Complete Kodi Setup Wizard) to get Kodi on your big screen. No manually entering Addons and side loading this that and the other. Some people may prefer to do a manual install on their Fire Stick or use the below guide to install on the Chromecast, but I guess it will depend on how much value you place on your time.

Via screen mirroring on android? Not the same as using on fire stick as it's dedicated so free up your phone! You can also use phone to control it. Don't get me wrong I own 3 chromecast and 6 chromecast Audio and they are great devices...just not as flexible as a fire stick which you can even airplay to should you wish using the right app. When one was £20 on offer and the other £35 it was a tougher call but for the £5-7 difference the fire stick is the better purchase in my eyes!
