Turns out I've just checked and mine is actually a 270X so any of these cards be a massive upgrade but I'd rather pay more and be future proof!

Thanks again. This does seem like good advice on research. I upgraded my power supply to 600watts when got the RX280 so that seems fine and my tower is a full size Asus G10AJ. As far as I can see there should be no reason to not go with the r9 fury over the RX480 8GB in that case? Now to decide between this or the LG 4K display for my MacBook!

And that's a low budget 1060 that is reduced... The 480 doesn't OC well at all, while the 1060 does.

I wouldn't recommend any card other than the 470 at 140-150 or the 1060 6gb at 220-230.

I feel there isn't a compelling difference in between, but if you must spend 180 quid on a gfx card, get the 1060 3gb.

So, the same price as the 8GB 480 then? :wink:

I don't think we "do" MSRPs here at HUKD. We do real-world prices. And there have been lots of larger cards (not that power/heat is an issue for the 1060 anyway) available at £230 in the past... well, yikes, they pop up weekly, it seems. Here's from the first page of results:

My pick of those would be the one with the Jetstream cooler. Of course, there were plenty more last month, and more the month before, too. There are £230 6GB 1060s extremely regularly. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh wow, never seen one below £230. But the one fan coolers aren't really sufficient for acceptable heat and noise. At standard prices, you're looking at £250+ for a decent card

No offence taken, although I'm not quite clear on your point. You don't seem to be disagreeing with the claim, right? The 3GB 1060 and 8GB 480 trade blows across most games, with the 1060 storming ahead in some games like The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4, and the 480 being ahead in Hitman and Doom. And the 4GB 480 has slower memory than the 8GB model.

I'm not recommending the 3GB 1060, mind you. I'm just correcting the mistake that a 480 will "soundly beat" a 3GB 1060. They're a match when the 480's weaknesses (effectively Windows-only, needs a higher-end CPU) are catered for.

you should instead pick up an xfx r9 fury for £250 at OC UK if you can pay the extra. It will out perform the 480 by 30-40% and it is made for 1440p. Make sure you check the card length it is massive.

I have a R9 280x and have just bought a HP Envy 1440p monitor that supports free sync. Is this a worthwhile upgrade for full 1440p gaming on titanfall 2 etc and does freesync make a real difference? Had my eye on one of these for a while.

It's been £174 for a 4GB 480 in the past. Personally, I'd take the £35 saving and get a 470, or spend the extra £30 and get a much faster 6GB 1060.

Heat for this, but it's disappeared already (shows as discontinued?). Might have been a Black Friday deal that went up early, hopefully it comes back.

Excellent price for this card. Will soundly beat the 3Gb 1060. Make sure it is running the most recent BIOS (F7 from memory) and you set the power limit to +50%.
