This won't be up everyone's street but it's something I hope to do at the back end of 2017. It's easy to extend the itinerary if you want to spend longer, but this trip gives you a good idea of the sights in Jordan, including a trip to Petra, Wadi Rum and the beach resort of Aqaba where you could also then do a side trip to the Dead Sea.
I've picked great places to stay that have favourable reviews and although driving yourself and hiring a car looks to be pretty easy I've priced this up using public transport as the buses also seem a cheap and good option.

Your hotel can help you with booking and catching the very cheap bus from Petra to Waidi Rum. In Waidi Rum get ready for a night camping in the desert under the stars at the Bedouin Lifestyle Camp. There are plenty of activities such as camel rides, Jeep tours and nearby hiking.

You'll catch the bus today to head to Aqaba which is a beach resort, get rid of the desert dust and relax. There are also opportunities to snorkel or dive at the ocean resorts. You'll overnight in Aqaba at the Alps Qida hotel.

You'll check out of Aqaba today and you need to be at the airport at 10:25pm ready for your flight in the early hours of the morning of 1/04. This leaves you a full day to make your way back to Amman. I've included the cost of the bus back to Amman but it may appeal to hire a driver or local agent to do a dead sea tour from Aqaba then returning to Amman at additional cost.

I would just love to go and explore Petra, what an amazing civilisation there was once!
However, there is a very bad risk in that part of the world eg kidnappings, beheadings, shootings and instability (even Turkey!!) - which means I definitely wouldnt risk it even if it £99 for the week. I'm no longer the intrepid traveller i was once, I've been to Egypt several times, and I loved going to Turkey but probably not again for years to come.
I now prefer to holiday in places like Cancun, or closer to home. With recent deals here to Mexico flying from £219, i think i know where I'd feel safer.

If you're really into seeing Petra you'll need 2 days there, not one. It's a massive site, there's so much more to it than the Indiana Jones facade.

Actually, I would have loved to have been able to join one of the teams working out there - 3 or 6 months or more.....
Now THAT I would put on my bucket list.
Would have been doubly good if I could spend a British winter out there working, away from all the floods, gales and freezing weather.

Fly into amman.. Travel to Petra / Mt Sinai / Dead sea / red sea and finish in Cairo
Flgihts were £250 and it was actually a tour for 7 days with Intrepid
Not sure id want to be driving around that part of the world presently and ive been to some warzones in my time

This includes all bus transportation in the cost although some people may prefer to drive. I'd research the TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet forums. Package tours like Intrepid are OK but expensive for what you get. I believe it's around £700pp for a week and then add your flights on top but it's convenient if you don't want to DIY it.

Visited Petra a few years back - an amazing experience. We had an unbelievable day.
We have also visited Israel (Jerusalem, Bethlehem etc) and Egypt (Cairo, Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Alexandria)....
Also Istanbul in 2015
This was all before the 'troubles'
I have just been very VERY lucky with my timings.
I keep meaning to write a bucket list - but I am too busy just doing things - swimming with sting-rays, climbing Leaning Tower, seeing Tuts death mask in Cairo etc...

Just been to Aqaba and did the tour to Petra the whole area was dry hot and very dusty- going on a tour the entrance fee was 50 dollars if you go on your own it is 90 dollars,

Wife has banned me from going due to safety. There have been attacks as little as 10km north of Amman as recently as June. Wish I'd gone a few years back but ended up going to China instead - if only I had a crystal ball!

I went to Jordan in August. Just two travelling and had absolutely no issues with safety. I would actually say I felt safer there than in this Country.
If you have a day spare in Amman, I would recommend going to Jeresh. Absolutely awesome.
One point I'd make is that there are a lot of miles between these sites mentioned above. Plan the trip so you travel in a circle as much as you can. Going up and down Jordan takes a lot of time.
Cracking price though for an amazing experience. :sunglasses:

It was quite scary . Kid was fast asleep upstairs . He could sleep through Armageddon . I'm on my own now since my husband died a couple of years ago . I'm only five foot tall and there were three of them . I think I'd have given them the keys in all honesty . Don't see I would have had a choice

True but then I could take the rubbish out the garage and stick that in the loft and put the car in the garage . Someone tried to break in to steal the car keys the other night . Twice . They snapped the front door lock but I heard the noise . They came back later to finish the job but I heard them again and called the police . Mind you Petra is very tempting . On my bucket list

Mines full of junk I can't fit anywhere else and part of me thinks if the stuffs been up there for nearly 10 years should I just bin it when I move house? If I've not needed it in 10 years I'm never going to need it right?

Wow, plus it's nearly 60 quid to get into Petra itself now. More than double than when I went a few years ago. Worth every penny though, truly one of the best treasures from antiquity.

If you have a day spare in Amman, I would recommend going to Jeresh. Absolutely awesome.
One point I'd make is that there are a lot of miles between these sites mentioned above. Plan the trip so you travel in a circle as much as you can. Going up and down Jordan takes a lot of time.
