Also had the 18x30g. Quick chat and had a full refund and get to keep the items.

We feed our cats Applaws and they seem to like it. Expensive yes but stocked up when it was £20 for 7.5kg.

Just received my order and as predicted got 18 x 30g packs rather than 60g packs. Got on to amazon customer services and they have reimbursed half the price of my order - result!

So, we're getting off track here. The original, rather inflammatory and very subjective comment, was 'Buy Dreamies & kill your cat slowly but surely'.

Nobody is saying that feeding a cat on a diet comprised, exclusively, of Dreamies is healthy. But naturelover implied any amount is killing your cat, which is just silly.

Everything in balance... we feed our cat a mix of wet and dry food and mix it up in terms of brands and flavours depending on his, rather fickle, preferences on any given week.

Over-feeding and obesity is much more of an issue rather than a somewhat academic discussion on the precise nutritional balance of their diet.

PS. I would trust vets collective advice (who have all spent their professional lives learning about animal welfare) over the advice of a lay person who's read a couple of books

Cats should eat meat they're carnivores. One of our cats will only eat biscuits, So she gets a grain free diet of Arden Grange Light.
As long as there's plenty of water about they should be fine.
Both critters are crazy for Dreamies :man::innocent:

except it is relevant... anyway you feed your cat dry biscuits and I'll feed mine a healthy diet. If you believe that processed dry biscuits are a healthy diet then that's up to you!

We are living healthy long lives and yet those diseases you mentioned are all on the rise too, am I misunderstanding or is that slightly contradictory? Cancer is on the rise in humans because life expectancy has significantly increased and it's mostly an age related disease, and diagnostic techniques and awareness of symptoms have improved. Animals are living much longer than before too and so have the same issues. Kidney disease, I'm assuming you mean CRF/CKD, is also pretty much an age related condition, it's quite unusual as far as I'm aware to see it in young animals. Obesity is generally down to the owners overfeeding unless of course there's other underlying health issues.

Cats can live long lives on raw/natural/barf food, but that doesn't automatically mean it's healthy. Cats can live long lives on shop bought food but that doesn't automatically mean it's unhealthy either. Comparing cat food to smoking in a niche and tiny human population isn't really relevant at all.

The majority of what Naturelover has posted is spot on to be honest.

I'd highly recommend anyone with a cat to do their own research, especially if you are feeding them exclusively on dry food.

It's not a conspiracy about the relationship between Vets and pet food manufacturers. It states on the Hills website that they lecture about pet nutrition at vet schools. They sell prescription diets through the vets and they both profit from it.
yrreb88 to JohnOFarrell
30 Nov 16 #47
When you put it like that no, there's not really a conspiracy at all. . However, in my opinion Naturelover alleged that essentially there's a biased/corrupt relationship between vets, vet schools and the pet food industry, suggested that grain/cereals are toxic to cats and that most commercial pet food and treats such as these were practically poisonous and killing cats. I think my skepticism of most of what's been posted is at least somewhat warranted. For example according to the BVA:

"The veterinary curriculum does include lectures on pet nutrition delivered by the veterinary schools and in addition some pet food companies provide additional lectures and learning materials. In our experience veterinary students are intellectually sceptical individuals undertaking scientific training that teaches them to investigate what they are being told. It is highly unlikely that lectures and information provided by individual companies will have an undue influence on them.”

(Article concerns dog food but it's also applicable to cats)
"Many practices sell a range of items for pets from toys and beds to leads and food. Margins on the sale of dog food are relatively small – probably in line with other retailers – and these sales can help cover overheads to keep the costs of other veterinary services down. By stocking a particular brand of dog food veterinary surgeons are not suggesting that it is the only dog food that should be used; simply that it is a trusted brand. Some vets will also stock dog foods that have been specially formulated to help dogs with particular illnesses. Veterinary surgeons are always happy to discuss different diet options with clients.”

Plus another nearly 100 before that dog biscuits came first then cans of "Spratt's" meat and other brands If since the 1860's cat's and dogs had really been suffering from eating specially made pet foods and prior to that crackers chucked over by sailors i don't think we'd have the pet foods we do now

Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer rates are all on the rise in people. Obesity and kidney disease on the rise in cats and dogs yet we are all living healthy long lives!

Cats can live long lives on shop bought food but that doesn't mean it's healthy.
Some people are chain smokers and are living well into their 90's, that doesn't mean smoking is healthy.

Of course the BIG brand cat food producers are going to ADD the required "vitamins, minerals & taurine" as ADDITIVES tomake it nutritional.
BUT
IT is not what NATURE has BIOLOGICALLY made cats eat NATURALLY!

Pets cats are biologically like miniatures Tigers...they have digestive systems that BIOLOGICALLY can ONLY EAT PROTEIN (Obligate Carnivores!).

Pet food had only been around 60 years approx.

Prior to this they eat what they could hunt - Prey = 95% PROTEIN & 5% Stomach Contents of their Prey

Just like Tigers!

By the way read the B.A.R.F. (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) book by a vet who breaks the TRUTH & lies of the pet food industry!!!!

30 Nov 16 #36
This is basically the naturalistic fallacy and an appeal to antiquity.

It's wrong to say cats "biologically can only eat protein", they can eat and digest carbohydrates and fats.

So the pet food industry is evil, lies,, make vets sell their foods all to make money but this single lone vet speaks the truth and provides all this knowledge for free? Oh wait, there are books for sale. Oh wait, there is an expensive and exclusive range of food for sale. Sorry but I can't be the only one that sees the irony and hypocrisy here. What if all you have read is simply the propaganda of the raw food industry?
ian_uk1975 to naturelover
30 Nov 16 2 #42
Humans originally hunted and scavenged for food, but we're doing pretty well as a species eating packaged and processed foods (in a healthy balance). So, we know cats live long and healthy lives on a diet of shop-boight cat food, so it's not an argument based on what's best for the cat. Seems more of a moral/ethical argument.

I don't think this is the appropriate place to be preaching to people or trying to 'convert' those who don't subscribe to your views.

Cats are OBLIGATE CARNIVORES & this (along with all 90% of cat food brands that have Grain in the food) are literally killing your cats slowly & surely.
Whiskas, FELIX, Hills & others advertise & pay (plus lecture in) universities that vets train in.

Vets then recommend those brands of cat food & sell it in their vet surgeries.

Cats then get literally ill eventually from eating said brand's cat food all the time.

Vets, Whiskas, FELIX, Hills & Other get rich

Thousands of cats lives SUFFER BY EATING GRAIN FILLED CAT FOOD & TREATS!!!!

Open your eyes people & look at the bigger picture!

Buy Dreamies & kill your cat slowly but surely

OR

Give your cat a pure protein treat like tinned tuna (not in brine) or a tablespoon of roast chicken from your Sunday roast INSTEAD & help your cat live longer!

My parents' cats all lived to ripe old ages and they were fed whatever brand cat food they (the cats) decided they liked on any given week. Cat food is nutritionally-balanced to suit a cat's dietary needs. Feeding cats solely human food is likely to result in obesity and other health problems (kidney issues, for example, if given too much protein).
yrreb88 to naturelover
30 Nov 16 1 #31
[citations needed]

Obligate carnivore means they need to eat some meat to survive. It does not mean they must only eat protein and meat and cannot digest any carbohydrates.

Your conspiracy theory doesn't make much sense to me. Of course vets sell and recommend different brands, they're a business, they want to make money. They do not have lectures where a rep from Felix tells them to buy and sell Felix to clients and I doubt the pet food industry is interested in killing off it's customer base. No one is killing or causing suffering to their cats because according to the internet they're being fed the wrong food.

Recommending tuna, or even roast chicken, as a treat for cats in my opinion shows the extent of your knowledge of feline nutrition. Tuna is naturally high in salt and mercury particularly for a 4kg animal and it's far better to give some plain white fish or chicken as a treat. It's much cheaper than tuna and you can also use it when they're a bit ill and/or have a sensitive stomach. Yes a tiny bit of tuna on an occasion won't cause much harm but neither will a dreamie, just like us and an occasional chocolate bar.
