**24/11/2016 11:30am EDIT - This post originally contained preview deals posted 2 weeks ago. Since then and especially leading up to Black Friday the deals appear to have significantly changed. To save confusion I've removed all the old fluff and replaced it with what we as a community know as of 11:30am 24th November.**

The i3 processor will play both fine. The Celeron processor is fine for Roblox but will struggle with Minecraft. There's a review of how the Intel HD 5500 graphics in the i3 runs some games here.

Roblox & Minecraft will run pretty fine on the i3 but do not expect much, Minecraft may have a low frame rate.. I say this as my son Plays Minecraft on a i3 it its deffo sub 30FPS.

Yeah im with you on this one, I didnt have an optical drive on my desktop for years, on the rare occasion of needing one I simply used an external one, there around the same price on amazon as internal ones and simply plugin via usb.
I would much rather pay less and save on weight and battery life for a laptop than buy one with, but even then in fairness I wouldn't turn a deal like this down based on such a small detail!

The i3 for £199 looks like a good price to me. I have been on the lookout for a laptop, and that i3 has the IntelHD 5500 GPU which is decent enough to run some games in low settings which is what i was after. So at that price its a good deal imo.

It runs in Java so RAM is very important for mods.
You GPU barely gets touched - your CPU will be doing most of the hard work for the PC / Mac version.
The Windows 10 version (more like Pocket Edition) isn't Java-based so it'll run well on lesser hardware.

delgado to nikki1306
10 Nov 16 2 #61
My experience of the Celeron processor in the £129 laptop is that it's fine for the basics but can only cope with light multitasking. So as long as you're only opening a few browser tabs and a few other applications at the same time, it's fine. Try to do too many things at once and it will struggle and slow down. For light users who really do just want to look at one or two websites at a time, do ms office docs and play a few basic games (like my Dad!) they do the job nicely.

delgado
10 Nov 16 #59
Yes, the Optifine mod for Minecraft is definitely worth installing on weaker systems, it can make a huge difference. But the Celeron N3060 still struggled in my experience. As someone else said, the Windows 10 version of Minecraft can run better but I still think that if Minecraft is important to you (or the kid you're buying it for), the i3 is the one to choose as it will cause you less of a headache!

I thought pretty much all laptop drives were 5400rpm?
The reason so many laptops are crap is because they're too cheap, regardless of what we might all think, laptops have dropped in price so much over the last 10 or 15 years something has to give and it's build quality. £130 for a laptop is stupidly cheap really.
spannerzone
10 Nov 16 #66
Personally I'd avoid the celeron in these models as they're based on the very low power consumption Braswell (Bay Trail replacement/Atom replacement) and are fairly low performers - this N3060 has a lower benchmark than a Core2duo E4300 from 2008 - while the Celeron will no doubt have much better HD graphics capabilities it's still a slow CPU but it's also low power consumption....and very cheap. Some Celeron's are actually very good performers (those that are cut down versions of the full fat desktop processors for example) but I'm not so impressed with these particular versions.

If you can stretch to the i3 5005u - this has nearly 3 times the benchmark performance. It all comes down to your requirements and budget - both these laptops would benefit from an SSD drive if budget allows.

hetro0
12 Nov 16 1 #110
The celeron is ok for, general Web browsing. It's more ram that you want 4gb is low for nowadays and with all the bloatware that will be on it you will soon max your ram out at 4gb.

I would go for the i3 and 8Gb of ram at £199 as you will have much more room to multitask and you do need to nowadays.

If I was to buy it, I would take the hard drive out sell it on eBay and put an SSD drive in. Will transform your experience of using no end.

But having said that I appreciate some on here might not be able to do this

I posted it as an i5 initially as I also saw it as i5 in the image, but both the article and the evidence in terms of price points it to an i3. Whatever happens I'll update the thread when the time comes.

Bit of a hardware noob here but was wondering if these specs are good enough to do some digital art with a drawing tablet? Not sure to get a cheap one like this or go surface for drawing?

The Surface's superior screen (and specs, unless you opt for the m3 edition) will be better off for drawing.

13 Nov 16 #128
Thanks. Was looking at the I3 one. Would screen matter of I get a drawing tablet for the i3? Surface is better specs but more money naturally. Just wondered if this machine would limit doing digital art?
Bravura
14 Nov 16 #129
In that instance I cannot answer your question, I've not used a drawing tablet. But if you're drawing then what/how it looks like on screen would be important in my opinion, as is the number of pixels on screen. I am also unsure if the CPU matters against a drawing tablet and its software. You can maybe self answer this by comparing your current software/PC versus the i3 Dell laptop.

Would the celeron be sufficient to use iTunes? We have an old laptop which struggles with iTunes. Would I be better buying an i3 or is the celeron sufficient? Thanks
Bravura to jamtart6
14 Nov 16 #131
I brought a laptop to use purely iTunes with due to a requirement of me keeping a few different clients' iOS devices maintained, with a CPU similar to Celeron (an AMD equivalent in a similar price bracket) and it works fine for most part. You may find it slightly slower however when loading it up/updating it/syncing/performing back ups especially when trying to do something else on the side.

I would say if budget allows it, buy the i3 instead so you can use it for other things if the need comes up.
Lahn to jamtart6
14 Nov 16 #132
Celeron will be fine for itunes - your old laptop must be very old, itunes system requirements look very low:

Furthermore, even though it's just a puny Celeron, it still has a much better intel HD graphics card than old intel integrated ones (so the GPU can offload video playback, for instance)

(I use iPad Pro for that) These machines arnt industry standard for nothing? People arnt going out of their way to pay more for Mac because they look cool? that's purely coincidental  PC without doubt is for gaming.. Everything else is Mac all the way! I'm guessing you're not a film maker or musician or photographer? I am and are many people I know and I can assure you there are NO exceptions to this opinion! I've always had Windows and continue the fight with it, maybe I've just been really unlucky but I'll bet I've reinstalled it twice a year for as long as I can remember :s I torrent on Mac and as I said.. I was pretty hyped for the i3, until I've read the reviews on Dell's website alone. Apparently people are having tons of problems with these, even though the spec looks very good for the money. In the end, there must be a reason why these models are getting huge discounts...

Three of us bought MBP's in 2009 for £1500 and two of them are still faster than most Windows laptops these day with no issues. Even mine after being dropped and corners bent, was fast for everything until water damage in 2014 when it died.
Yet this £500 Vaio i5 which has got minimal use by family in past two years is running like dog ****.
Mac's are by far superior, it's just software availability let's them down.
Windows is fine on a custom built PC but with companies like Dell and HP, I'd be wary.
However, the £200 deal may be worth a punt.

I'm a camera operator, video editor and photographer. I mostly use Macs but ONLY because they are pretty much industry standard. Windows machines are generally at least as good if not better for some applications (Premier Pro performance on Windows 10 was actually better than on OSX when I checked about a year ago). Each to there own though, just want you to know that not all people who work in these fields are total sheep who want a mac becuase they think they should have one. So there are exceptions.

Oh and I also have a second business repairing computers, mostly Macs, so my perspective is completely based on experience. Apple are past their prime now and they're going to start failing slowly but surely.

Apple dont make 17 " lap tops any more how daft is that? . If you are a graphic design artist then you are expected to use over priced Apple products . Viruses used not to be written for IOs because not enough people used them .

Windows phones are going the way of Blackburys . Hardly anyone uses internet explorer or bing any any more . Macs appear to going the same way.

Windows is sufficient for most tasks. Many software designers and developers use Windows, and Photoshop amongst many other packages work fine on the operating systems. Although I use Premiere only casually, it's only a matter of time until Apple is no longer seen as vastly superior in the film industry. That's only one creative field, as is photography. There are many others and there's a reason Windows takes up the market share and OS X is only used by 3%: Windows is perfectly fine (sometimes better when an OS X software alternative isn't available) and satisfies most industries.

By the way, moving on from that topic, do these kinds of deals actually go live at midnight, or is it really just luck of the draw that we press F5 at the right time?

Speaking as someone who has a media degree, then retrained in IT, macs are basically the idiot friendly specialised equipment, so depending on how you interpret things Mac or Windows can be better than each other its similar to the Apple vs Android arguments.

Apple is a locked down OS which means theres not much out there so has quality over quantity, Windows on the other hand has both quality and quantity its just as theres so much selection you need to filter out everything.

Windows can also game, costs far less, can be customised more in hardware etc.

Are you a "film maker" or just someone who thinks they are because they grab their camera and film some stuff and put themselves up there with actual people in the industry, I mean no offense by that but its like people claiming they are artists when they work a 9-5 office job and do hardly any painting.

nonsense. someone could be a genius in some fields, far from an idiot, but not have much training and experience in computers and prefer using macs

the fact you retrained in IT sounds like you yourself didn't grasp it very well in order to seek training, so at some point you knew a lot less than you did after training, yet you appear to be putting down people in the situation you started off in. throwing stones in glass houses

you are aware that windows is an operating system, and mac is not? did your IT training not explain this?

no it's not. it's a business and a fruit

there are operating systems such as OSX, macOS and they aren't locked down. they can be changed as much as windows can, generally speaking. however the more advance features generally require more advanced skills to use than windows may do

no it doesn't

osx and windows both have large amounts of programs, both good and bad. you can also run windows on modern apple computers and get the best of both worlds whilst fully supported. you can also run osx or windows as virtual machines on some but not all non apple computers but it's not supported by apple

this is really nonsense. you can game on osx or windows. as for cost it depends on what's for sale and how much you pay for it. you can obtain osx or windows for free or at low costs. typically osx comes free with hardware and has free upgrades. you can customise both apple and non apple computers, the price depends on the specifics, in some cases it may cost more to upgrade a windows based computer than an osx computer, in other cases it won't. in some cases it will be the same cost

like people who be trained in IT but make posts online that suggest they don't know much about computers?

no offense!

I can't tell if you are twisting things or are stupid enough to misunderstand or arrogant enough to think you know it all.

I never said you couldn't like macs, or that they were bad to use (I actually quite like them but wouldn't pay the prices they want, and hate the attitude that comes with owning a mac i.e its the best thing ever) plus I used the terms mac there in reponse to thats what people use to edit stuff.

Mind telling me why you think Windows doesn't have quality and quantity (and I never said all of the software is quality but meant as theres so much out there it means there is more quality available in general alongside bad software) Or to put it into another way, lets say Apple has 10 pieces of software for something, as theres only 10 it means all can have the development for quality so then it would be 100% of software is quality, if Windows had 1000 different softwares for something even if 600 of them were outdated not very good or whatever it would still have 390 more quality ones to choose for but someone would look at stats and say "only 40% off the software is good, therefore its more likely to have bad software than good" NOT that it has 39 times more quality products.

Just as I used the term Apple to cover all their operating systems rather than name each one, and yes their systems are locked down far more than Windows and Android.

What a nasty little troll you are trying to insult my time at university, for your infomation I retrained as the industry has so much competition, plus after I graduated there was a new wave of media like blogging and youtube to contend with but to let you know I worked in a local radio station for a year writing up reports and scrips, worked at a newspaper for 6 months, worked for BBC for a while before they had cutbacks.

I decided that retraining in IT since I have been using computers since I was 2 years old (back in the early 80s) meant I had a better career.

I mean you are the sort of person who loves technicalities, I mean you can game on Apple devices, but how many of my 1050 steam games will work on Apple? How many of my 20 years + of pc games work on Apple?

And my no offense was meant as just that, it was to ask a genuine question if they were a casual user who saw themselves a certain way or someone who used the software all the time?

I mean I have a friend who calls himself a photographer, he makes no money from it but has spent over £1000 on a camera, and yes he uses a macbook for his photos but I would say he was a amateur photographer with passion and talent than a photographer, not because he never trained in it but because its a hobby and he makes no money from it.

Whilst I know people who call themselves film makers for filming things on their phone then editing it on their pc be it Mac or Windows, even if they spent a long time editing it they may or may not be a filmmaker, and certainly not the same thing as someone who does things like tv shows and movies!

Same thing for hardware, less selection and limited driver support.

Apple operating systems are basically if you want specific things to be done you get them and pay heavily for the convenience, want a do pretty much everything system (and costs far less) go for Windows, linux of course being only for advanced users really.

By the way did I attack Apple at any point like the way you are attacking me? Unless you lack the comprehension over what I said about idiot friendly, I never said geniuses didn't use them or didn't want to use them but was implying it was more user friendly and a lot of users like that do so because they haven't skills to know anything but the basics.

i can see what you posted, and what you haven't posted, as can others.

you've basically posted a lot of nonsense that's factually incorrect

you still don't appear to have grasped that "apple" is a busines and "windows" is an operating system

that's not true at all

so instead of replying with facts, you reply with insults, after making an insulting post towards another member, and posting a load of complete nonsense. you also don't even understand what i've posted as i never posted any insult to you at all

use your brain and logic. how would anyone know what games you have in the first place, in order to determine how many work on a peice of fruit?

you also appear to have overlooked the fact that i pointed out earlier in that modern apple computers can run windows, supported by apple, and can therefore run windows software as well as osx/macOS software

how many osx games can your pc run?

yet when i reply and point out how much of what you posted is nonsense and factually false and add that statement, in turn you make insulting personal comments towards me, whilst i didn't do the same?

an amatuer photographer is a photographer. a professional photographer is a photographer

i think much of your issue is you don't understand the meaning of words very well

if they make films, they are a film maker

if they make music they are a music maker

if they make cheese they are a cheesemaker

it's really simple

this makes no sense at all. what are you referring to? film makers or fruit?

i already pointed out this isn't true. apple operating systems are FREE with apple computers. you can spend more money on a windows computer than an apple computer and vice versa

as for linux, beginners can use it too

osx, windows and linux can be used by both advanced users and beginners

i didn't attack you at all. i replied to point out the nonsense you posted in reply to someone else, and how factually incorrect you are. you have demonstrated your own lack of comprehension in your last two posts on this thread

urmmm given that an modern apple mac can infact have the same hardware that can run either operating system you would think you'd have the common sense to be able to tell you can actually install osx on a windows pc.

so he could run just as many osx games as you do, just his hardware would cost a lot less for the same specification.

Theres also the strong argument of why you would want to though given the generally higher prices for software/games and often lack of availability of it on osx.

osx offers a good environment for those who have limited to no IT literacy such as maybe ur gran, granddad, mother etc, but for those with any knowledge or experience windows or Linux opens up an world of possibilities.

I'm unsure what your question is here. From what we can tell, the Celeron model will have no drive, while the i3 one should have a tray one which you push a button and a tray will pop out for you to put a CD/DVD on (it "snaps" on).

20 Nov 16 #201
i even pointed out in my first post that you can run osx on windows and windows on apple computers, so just as you say, an apple computer could potentially run all his steam games. the same isn't necesarily true for a windows based pc. whilst you can hackingtosh and run VM's it depends on the hardware, and there's a bit more involved, particularly in the creating and upkeep of a hackintosh if you want to keep the OS up to date and fully working

personally i prefer windows, but i use various versions of windows, plus osx and linux and have a whole bunch of computers from a dell mini 9 that runs osx and windows 10 to a dell 17" laptop that runs osx, windows and linux, macbook that runs osx and windows 7 in both bootcamp and the same installation runs as a VM in parallells, plus other desktops that run various OS from osx to linux in VM's, tablets that just run windows, ipad that just runs osx, and a dell server that runs VM's but not osx, or at least a version i can get to work

so in regards to knowing what hardware and software works, i have plenty of experience both currently and over the years, so i know when people are posting nonsense. you can do a lot on either windows, osx or linux, but osx and linux are arguably harder to get into the more advanced features. osx may look fisher price initially, but for a long time windows user finding out how to get into kexts and stuff under the hood it's as much advanced as windows

magic? how else do graphics cards work on a mac if it's not magic?

how do you equate that if all things being equal that games would run faster on a mac? what benchmarks have you undertaken, and how did you manage it on a modern mac in relation to the driver issue you raise? did you use magic too? or perhaps you used the force and in liue of not having drivers to make the graphics card work, you just imagined the graphics appearing magically on the screen in your mind?

You've not heard of BadUSB then? If an optical disc is malware free at the time of burning, it stays that way (Read-Only). It's a far better baseline for troubleshooting than USB, in the circumstances of keeping a system safe (USB drives are technically-rewritable down to the firmware chips themselves, let alone the obvious storage chips aka the 'memory'). Also, good-quality optical discs are very good for archiving material. I've had stuff I'd burnt that lasted over ten years, proven. Some really cool sound samples, in my case.

I don't think I have ever heard somebody say "yes! that's the perfect laptop for me!!! oh no, wait, it's got an optical drive, I couldn't possibly buy it now"

I've heard PLENTY of coworkers say "wait, you've got an optical drive? Would you mind ripping/copying/burning this for me?"

I also thought about doing this... however the Dell Price Guarantee seems to suggest you have to be able to share a live link showing the laptop at the lower price and in stock. My worry is you could buy the laptop today at full price, hoping to then get a refund when it goes cheap on Friday. But then on Friday it turns out they only have 5 laptops at the special price and they instantly go out of stock... therefore no live link for you to show to get the price match refund.

your confused because you don't really know what you are talking about. i didn't misunderstand your post at all. drivers are available for mac hardware. drivers are available for the operating systems that mac computers can run, and that's why graphics cards run on mac computers, and why people with mac computers can see stuff on their screens

the other thing you don't seem to acknowledge is that you can run windows on a mac computer by simply booting into the OS installed on a partition, it doesn't have to run as a virtual machine. or in other words you can dual boot a modern mac computer into either osx/macOS or windows 7/10/etc and the drivers are relevant to the OS you run, so as long as there are windows drivers for the hardware and you can install the hardware then it will work

daltimor
23 Nov 16 #266
so do we know what is the code?
GrabbaBargain
23 Nov 16 #267
I'm guessing the code isn't being made public before the 25th as there is no point. The first 5 people onto the site at the right time will get the stock and the rest will be out of luck. If Dell are saying quantities are very limited then there's no chance there will be hundreds let alone thousands available.

Plenty of other cheap laptops around at not quite the too good to be true price of these ones. Making a shortlist and will see if any other offers materialise by or on Friday.
Infinitesd to GrabbaBargain
23 Nov 16 #268
Car Dealers used to do something similar. They would have an ad saying a car was 30% off, free servicing, free petrol, etc.. but then when you went to buy it, there was no deal. This is because there was only 1 vehicle at this price, and it proved to pull people to the dealership. Once there, you may end up buying a less than ideal model at a higher price. In the end the dealers had to put a stock code this price was applicable to as it was misleading. Since all vehicles have a different stock code you can see on the ad how many are at this price.

In the case of Dell, they may only have 5 or 10 of these computers at this price, and those who really wanted one will settle for the SAVE12 code since they missed out. You also have all of the upsells such as AV, support, etc..

While it may prove to be a good deal, the likelihood of people getting it will be slim, not to mention the meltdown from the internet that has happened the last few years.

Let the games commence!
CeeJay1975

So it will save you 12% on the list price eg. the £379 one will come down to £333.50... which is still a lot more than £199!

That's one way of looking at it. But the day doesn't stop at 23:59:59. 23:59:59.99 is still part of the day. As, logically, is 23:59:59.999 recurring. And that, by simple mathematics[1] is the same as 00:00:00.

[1] Simple maths:
1/3 in decimals is 0.333 recurring
2/3 in decimals is 0.666 recurring
3/3 in decimals is 0.999 recurring. But 3/3 is 1. Therefore 0.999 recurring = 1.

I fear I may be going off-track somewhat here.

After reading all this thread and seeing all the Black Friday ads on the TV and in the papers, I think you can sum up Black Friday/Cyber Monday as thousands in not millions of fools rushing to buy tat that retailers cannot shift, whilst under the illusion they`re getting the bargain of the century.

That`s all I`ve got to say about that.

So is the general consensus the 199 (whenever it is released) is a good deal?

Sure been asked before but can't see it how easy to get an Ssd in there please?

sherlock747 to jbarnsie
24 Nov 16 #338
I think for what they are they're both a good deal. If all you want a laptop for is to browse the internet then the Celeron version is perfectly fine, I've been using one with Win 10 for the last year without issue. Want to do more then go for the intel i3. Both will come alive hugely by upgrading to a SSD.

I was hoping to pick one of the Celerons up for my daughter for homework and the only game she'd want to play would be Minecraft which I was hoping would run OK. I would totally agree - midnight on 24th November is 0:00 on 24/11/2016 not 1 minute past 23:59 on 24/11/2016 - that would be midnight on 25th november
Jaheim2g11 to kuteguy
24 Nov 16 2 #347
That's how I see it but according to NIST, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, Midnight on a given day is an ambiguous statement. They even have a section on their official page explaining this
[https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/times-day-faqs#].

A much clearer way would have been 'Deal starts 0:01 on 24/11/2016.' No more ambiguity.

If Dell doesn`t have many i3 laptops available, this BF sale will backfire on them and just alienate future customers.

These are old out of date models with 5th gens, 7th gen is the very latest from Intel.

"Nov. 24th at Midnight: Dell 28 Ultra HD Monitor S2817Q £263.40 (save 50%)"
Someone could be under impression, that the monitor is usually being sold for £526.8 (2x £263.40) and now it's 50% off.
This model is discontinued and Amazon suggests newer model for £375.
Just saying.

Dear FREEZIN WOLF,

Thanks for your continued interest in the Dell DOORBUSTER: Inspiron 15 3000 deal.
Unfortunately due to Gavin in the sales department reserving the only 1 we ever had, before we closed at 6pm this evening this deal was never ever going to happen.

We'd really like to thank you for bringing the performance inadequacies of our customer facing e-platform to our attention. We will review your feedback and have a right laugh in the office. In fact Gavin has just sent an e-mail to the entire company with your meandering rant with a .GIF of a crying child.

If we could be of any further help we probably won't .

Smell ya later douch-nozzle.

1.0 out of 5 starsA very big mistake!
By P Mary Foley on 11 Nov. 2016
Size: 8 GBStyle: Intel Core i3
I bought this laptop directly from Dell. It is very slow and freezes on the Internet. My 6 year old Toshiba is faster than this one. Dell checked it out but claim it is fine. The touch pad can often be unresponsive. Buy the Levono idea pad 500. A much better laptop for the same money. Buy from Amazon. They have a much kinder return policy.

Brought this laptop as read dell supposed to be very good make. I only use laptop for the basics and got this to replace an old toshiba laptop which was supposed to be a terrible make. I have got to say my old toshiba puts this laptop to shame this is so slow . My internet banking takes so much longer to do on this , I can not recommend anything about this laptop apart from it turns on quickly. NOT IMPRESSED

1.0 out of 5 starsComplete rubbish

Without doubt the worst computer that I have ever bought. I used to like Dell but this computer is a joke in terms of quality and speed. It is like using an old computer from the last century. Propbably running Windows 10 on 4Gb RAM is also a major no no. Dell - shame on you for producing such poor quality rubbish. I have sent it back. AVOID

1.0 out of 5 starsThis laptop looks and feels like a relic from the 1960's
By Cougar on 26 Oct. 2016
Size: 8 GBStyle: Intel Core i3
Having used Dell laptops at work for some years, I thought it wise to buy one for home use. Big mistake. This laptop looks and feels like a relic from the 1960's. Very heavy, very clunky and very very slow. Don't bother trying to download google as it resists any attempts to use anything but their Windows Edge (which in turn is horrible). Clicking will wake anyone within two miles and the keyboard seems off centre which makes it difficult for Word writing. Avoid at all costs and buy two cans and a length of wire.

I completed the name, password, etc, when the laptop finally booted up. Eventually it said restart to progress ... and restarted back at the beginning! And again, and again, and again.
Eventually I wiped the drive and installed Linux, which works.Even with Linux it needs a RAM upgrade to do any work ... and you can't. The RAM is only accessible by removing the keyboard (they've been taking lessons form VW) which invalidates the guarantee.

Do your homework, and buy something that works

Hi

My friend at Dell Technical Support (not available through chat, he's employed by them has said):

Every time you come up with an error such as Timeout, simply refresh the page DO NOT START ALL OVER AGAIN. Refresh by hitting F5, OR COMMAND R on Macintosh.

Starting again will take you through the whole process. Whereas refreshing will POST that data from that stage. So be patient, but REFRESH.

Me and my two friends have managed to get an order in this method. Whenever your request crashes, the post data is still available in the session, so you can refresh again.

I'm sure anyone technical enough who understands web servers and requests will confirm this is the best way.

He also confirmed that the £199 is indeed out of stock, the £129 is in stock.

All the best.

The Friday code no longer works, was looking for the i3.

Managed to grab the £129 deal over the phone at 2:40AM, there was a 45 minute wait. Although I was told over the phone initially that both deals have expired and should try again at 1:00pm.

Yeah that line about 1pm. I dunno if the CS rep I spoke to just made a mistake because he actually asked me if I'd like to wait until 1pm lol.

Once I told him, no thanks I've already waited two and a half hours he said, "okay, I'll order it now"...

Mine ordered. Odd since they initially said the £129 deal was 1pm today and then seemed to change the goalposts. I think they were way overwhelmed which lets face it, they should have been able to deal with it, since this is like the 4th black friday we've gone mad for...

Gave up after Dell cleared my voucher. Site/basket fully working now the offer has expired! Plenty of stock at full price...
I think all Dell has done is alienate any future customers. I will add them to my future "avoid" list.
Luckily, i just found a good deal on eBay for a Acer Aspire i3 Touchscreen laptop for £254. I'm sure my young one would prefer having the touchscreen anyway etc. (only 4gb 500gb HDD though)

Phone them rather than messing about on their website. I kept getting errors, then tried live chat, was 403 in the queue, got down to 350, then that crashed too. Utterly deplorable. Eventually got fed up and ordered the £249 Lenovo one from John Lewis, it looks a similar spec with a slightly faster processor, with the added benefit of a 2 year guarantee. That'll do for my daughter.

Eventually called Dell and got through to someone. The £199 deal has ended but will be back up at 1pm, but I managed to order the £129 deal on the phone just 5 minutes ago for my mum. Be prepared for the hard sell on add ons, particularly office 360. Just politely decline.

Going to bed now!! Stressed out, but at least you don't get assaulted Black Fridaying it from home.

Just managed to get the £129 Celeron via the website after 3 hours of trying. Didn't really stand a chance of getting the i3, but I suppose everyone was expecting the Celeron to be going live at 1pm so maybe that's why the stock lasted a bit longer.

hey. just got off the chat with them like, 3 minutes ago. Not really budging on the line "£199 isn't available" even when I pointed out that a) dell is the manufacturer and b)the site says to try again at 1pm. He said the £129 one was still available. So bought it. bear in mind I'm getting this for my mum for light use and I might try again tomorrow for the i3.

1 hour on the phone, after being told online to phone it for my order to go through. The guy took my card details then said £379. I had a 2in1 in my basket and it failed at the very last button press to confirm the order, so I tried the chat and the first agent I got was exactly like the chap you had - just refused to do anything other than say the deal was over. So I ended the session and tried again - and the chap I got this time could not have been more different. After having given him my contact details he initially said that the best price they could get it too was £529 (he'd misunderstood and thought the offer price was £499), but I said the deal was actually for £449 - after another pause he came back and said they would do it for that price. So it eventually worked for me, but it just shows how different the Dell "experience" can be - they really need to get on top of this and the whole system crashing business.

I spoke to online chat and got a really bloody unhelpful person who just kept refusing saying the stock had depleted. Wish I'd have known at the time that others were getting it through the chat (but then do you get Quidco tracking?)

The guy did confirm that they only had 70(!) units available at that price which is just ridiculous really considering it was advertised nationally.

EDIT: That was for the 449 2-in-1 laptop.

Well I'm in work having had about four hours of broken sleep in between putting the i3 in my basket last night eight minutes after midnight, with the discount, experiencing the website crash probably about 500 times and then getting through to chat at 3.15am, finally being kicked off chat at 3.45am. Thanks Dell. Really appreciate that.

And the worst thing is, I'll try again at 1pm too.

But if I'm ever faced with a situation where two products are evenly specced and Dell is an option, there is absolutely no way on earth I'm going to go with them.

Was after either of these two laptop deals as my brother wants one for surfing and willing to pay up to £200. After the fiasco of the midnight i3 deal (I woke up at 00:03 and got the same crappy website experience well documented on here), decided not wasting more time trying to get one at 1pm when they supposedly come back on offer.

So have gone for a Lenovo Ideapad 110. Looks to be similar spec to the £129 Dell (15.6" screen, Intel celeron, 4gb ram, 500gb HDD, Windows 10) but also has a dvd writer, is in stock (or was when I ordered a few minutes ago) with prime delivery guaranteed by Sunday, and only 50 notes more than this unicorn Dell offer with Amazon offering £70 off as a black friday deal.

I guess I'm feeling lucky, after having 4 different browsers open and each failing when going to add to basket on Dell website and refreshing pages for 1.5 hours, also a chat open where I was 441 in the queue I finally managed to bag one via the phone which I was on hold on as well for 50 minutes...at 1.45am I must have got through to the only polite, courteous and efficient customer service rep on last night/this morning! Order confirmation came through at 2.25am.

I got my comedy team and legal team all on their computers at 10:59 to start buying up stock, we managed to secure a few dozen before the errors came up, clearly Dell only have a fairly limited stock of these to whip up a frenzy (mission accomplished).

Anyhoo, if anyone needs one I have a feeling a couple dozen will be on ebay in about a weeks time.

This is very scammy of Dell.

They've had tens or hundreds of thousands sign up, give email and payment details, ready for the offer...

Then at 1pm they crash and probably sell two units.

Now they have our details to spam.

Totally put me off Dell, and I'll be looking for an alternative brand.

Dell supply some of the top servers yet they haven't got one to keep their website going at busy times, that’s awful! I was up til 1am last night, 7am this morning and have spent over 2 hours wasting my time try to pay for a monitor that is in my basket. Tell me how come your sale reps via the chat are able to process orders manually? I can only assume it has something to do with dell avoiding paying cashback companies.

HOW MANY!!!!

Ok, so let's work this out. They spent loads of money on advertising these deals. £1000's on advertising themselves as a Top technology manufacture YET only have a few 100 units available at their discount price.

What a total shambles! They could have sold 1000's of their laptops today, had their name displayed in 1000's of home, schools, offices etc.

Yet they decided only a few 100 would be a good idea and leave 100's of people totally **** off with the company.

Well done.... You've done yourselves loads of favours today!!!!

Managed to get as far as the shipping page but no further. I simultaneously waited in the chat queue - went in at number 20 at 13.01 and took 49 mins to be served, only for the agent to drop the chat immediately - I cannot express how many expletives left my lips at that moment! Needless to say, I am not a happy bunny and definitely not happy with Dell especially as it meant that I missed out for the second time in 12 hours!

I did the same as this earlier this morning. I asked to be put through to the supervisor and kept repeating that the laptop was in my basket and all I wanted to do was pay.

I just kept repeating the same thing and they relented and told me someone would call me back. I quit the chat and thought I wouldn't hear anything and a few hours later (about 2ish) I had a call and they asked me for the catalogue number (CN53705) and they sent me the quote to my email. Then the chap took payment over the phone and I received a booking reference via email.

I also was told the laptop was out of stock and told the supervisor in chat that the information was misleading as the laptop was showing as in stock online and that I just wanted to complete my transaction. Supervisor's name was Shyam for reference.

No but i tried for nearly four hours last night and another 2 today, live chat queue at 1.03 today, acknowledge me at 3pm told me deal was over and gave me complaint address. He was useless. 2 hour wait for 2 sentences ! Still no laptop.
Reason for my comment is that i have just checked my bank account. £129 came out and then was put back in , checked other account, £129 came out and then was put back in. Confused me at first lol. So basically last night when we were all trying to pay and our cards were rejected and we tried different cards etc to make the payment. Something was actually happening!!!
Still no laptop and not out of pocket , but four transactions later - farce!
Lol - never again

I might just add I was up from midnight last night when I got it into my basket and tried for the next 3.5 hours to pay for it without success.
I rang Dell at 3-30am and kicked up merry hell.
The "advisor" told me to ring back at 1pm today.
So I was just lucky.

Same story here. I ordered the i5 2 in 1 laptop, input the code at 7am and got to the payment section for 7:01am and I tried 3 different cards and they all would not authenticate. Go through on chat and the guy said the deal has gone, I was persistent so he asked for my personal phone number (to me this method seems a bit shady) he rang me, didn't even say hello, he just said 'you want the laptop?' I responded with yes but not at full price and he said yes to £449. Anyway payment goes through and I get an 'order acknowledgement' at about 8am with a note that said my confirmation will follow shortly, did not receive my confirmation until 8:15pm... just after the phone lines close, the confirmation says delivery is due 29th of November but the invoice shows no payment taken, all zeros. Tracked the order number and says the order has been cancelled. This is very shady work from dell and if I don't receive my laptop they will lose my future custom.

Has everyone else had similar problems then?

I've received the acknowledgement e-mail but not the confirmation. However the order is now showing under "My Account" and the tracking information shows that it shipped yesterday afternoon.

Aren't they selling better specifications for more money? Obviously there may also be quality differences between different manufacturers, but they all seem to get a mix of good and bad reviews so it is difficult to decide. Hopefully a 5th gen i3 with 8GB of RAM should be enough for what I want, but time will tell.

anyone that got the £129 laptop, what's it like please? I bought one for my daughter, she wanted something for surfing the web. I presume it'll be fine, but some user experiences would be nice! I've not checked but would Linux go on it OK if windows is too slow?? cheers Nask

Very disappointed with dell. I had the £199 deal For my son, with the FRIDAY discount code accepted at 1pm, then the system went down after I pressed the next stage to start paying. Tried several times to pay all I go was server unavailable. Set up a chat to sort it out and this was simply terminated. Called on the telephone, But no one would answer.

Any suggestions what else I could have , should do. Sitting here not impressed with what I used to think was a reputable company

Tried to get the 199 laptop but didn't manage to, so ended up getting the 199 desktop, Inspiron 3650.

Was delivered yesterday and just tried to connect to my dell monitor which has came with a Dvi to dvi cable, however on this desktop it doesn't have a dvi :disappointed:.

Do I need to get a dvi to vga cable or maybe an adaptor??

Not sure why this still has vga and no dvi as my previous desktop from dell which is over 5 years old had both via and dvi connector at the back

I spent a couple of hours refreshing the dell ordering pages on friday for the 1pm £199 deal. Managed to get through eventually and got an email order acknowledgement. However, rang dell this morning and they said the order never got 'booked', meaning I have to go back and use the save12 code. Obviously I explained that this wasn't the deal I wanted but they wouldn't budge! Can't believe I have a confirmed order that they won't now honour!

I am currently on hold with dell. have been listening to music for over half an hour. while waiting to speak to a customer representative. had the order acknowledgement email and then nothing else. payment still pending at bank. delivery date estimated tomorrow on acknowledgement email.

28 Nov 16 #1283
If you've got an email order acknowledgement, don't give up so easily. You'd be better emailing them with details of the order confirmation and asking what's happened to it. If they fob you off too, escalate it to a complaint. http://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/uk/en/ukdhs1/email/order-support

I've still not had the confirmation e-mail but the laptop was delivered this morning. If your estimated delivery date is tomorrow there is a reasonable chance it will arrive.

** Sold to Thathi123 **

Not sure if anyone is interested but... I got one through the call back via online chat, as well as somehow managing to get an order through on the website (didn't realise this had gone through, to be honest). Both were the £199 model. So, if anyone is in the Portsmouth area and still wants one at cost price, I'm more than happy to part with the second one if they're willing to pick it up. Just drop me a line.

My order was cancelled yesterday so rang them this morning. They said that there had been an issue and someone in sales would put the order back on the system and call me back within 2 hours. No phone call so just rang them again to be told there was a technical issue where a number of orders had been cancelled and they were trying to get them back on the system. They assured me that my order would be re-entered and that I would receive a call or an email to confirm it. Hope this helps.

I called them too an hour ago and was told the product not in production anymore. They have taken more sales than stocks they have. Not sure what's next though. Will be good to share if anyone gets a call from them.

29 Nov 16 #1297
Looks like they are out of stock... Here is the reply I got,

HI Karthick,

Thank you for contacting Dell online customer care with order number: 190167348

The order gets canceled due to product goes into End of life. Please speak to our sales department to book for an alternate order.

Just called Customer Support again and been told that they have no further stock but they will satisfy the order with something that is close to the original specification. I have again been told that someone will call me and I will receive a quotation via email to let me know what they are going to replace the Inspiron 15 3000 with.
Yeedeal
29 Nov 16 #1299
Did you call or email? Just wondering what's our consumer right if that's the case? Can they replace with something to match the description of our orders? Or we don't get any at all?
Yeedeal
29 Nov 16 #1300
That's good news Joze, please keep us updated if you receive any call or replacement email. Fingers crossed. Thanks
Joze
29 Nov 16 #1301
I rang, as I can't get through on a customer support number I ring 0800 5871456, go through to sales as though I want to buy something and ask them to put me through to Customer Support regarding an order, they ask for the order number then put me through. Not sure of consumer rights but knowing the world today there will be some small print somewhere saying they don't have to supply you if they cant. Will keep you updated.

Is anyone who ordered through chat going to try to claim fron Quidco? Or is it unlikely to succeed?
alared
1 Dec 16 #1312
As far as I know, Quidco was down most of BF.
I tried a few times but just their silly "hang on there" page.
I can`t see how you can claim if you didn`t go through them despite them being down most of the day.
alared
1 Dec 16 #1313
Yes it`s a great laptop for the money but really worth no more than £300, which you could/can get it for if you use TCB/Quidco and Dells 12% off code if they are all still valid.

Solidly built i3 core 5th gen 8gb ram and 1tb HD, well worth £199.

The 199 is okay don't get me wrong but does it feel a tad on the large side to anyone else here? It won't fit into the standard laptop bag that I have.

The screen isn't as good as I'd hoped. Colours go quite a bit when you push the screen back and view from the front like one of those crappier phones.

I successfully ordered the laptop on Black Friday reduced from £349 to £199.

The full order confirmation came through and payment was take. So far the eta dates have moved 4 times so I called to have a moan.
They advise that they want to cancel my order and re book it but the price will go back to £349. Surely this is breach of contract ?

They made an offer of sale, I accepted and made full payment.
They have failed to deliver goods that they have in stock and now want to change the terms of our binding agreement ?

Lovely company.

Anyone else hit by these crooks or have thoughts here ?

If you put it on eBay after eBay & PayPal charges you'll end up £20/30 profit or less...
Better sell someone apart from eBay.
