Because full sugar Coke is chemical free and grows naturally? :P Sorry but thinking that things which are unnatural and therefore bad or unsafe and things which are natural are therefore good and safe is fallacious logic.
It's impossible to avoid chemicals, particularly the amino acids and methanol which make up aspartame, all of which will you will probably consume and produce in far greater quantities in food and your body as part of normal metabolism.
Aspartame has been proven to not be completely safe, the dose makes the poison as with anything. Current recommended daily limits are about 16 cans worth of Diet Coke a day. There is an increased risk if you drink that every day. However if you have that much in one day, and every day, you'd probably have other concerns such as an increased risk of water intoxication. Those who have PKU, need to limit their phenylalanine intake which is one of the amino acids that make up aspartame hence the "source of phenylalanine" on the label.
I don't see how the EFSA safety review covering over 2000 studies, including ones that hold negative conclusions, could be classed as cherry picked research.

Or basically, avoid weirdy chemical muck that only tastes of chemicals, and stick to something growing naturally on the earth. Yes we all know it's processed. That doesn't make it taste rancid though. Research proving something "completely safe" has been overturned before. Just depends which research you want to cherry pick. Personally - never going to be a willing lab rat for this stuff. Avoided disgusting tasting Aspartame my entire life, and I'm not the size of a weather balloon, and don't have diabetes. Who'd have thunk it?

When has the NHS ever advised the avoidance of aspartame "when you get cancer"? Why would they tell you avoid sugar? Avoiding fruit will probably not be on the list of advice given to cancer patients but I'm sure limiting consumption of soft drinks will be on there somewhere.
What reason do you have to believe it is mis-advice or rather why exactly is it wrong? Consider that the article shares the views of Cancer Research UK and is based on the views of a large study by the EFSA covering over 2000 studies.
