FFS it really annoys me when you get some one like you who expects the OP to tell you everything, have you never heard of Google the OP's done enough posting the deal if your interested its upto you to do the research. I buy stuff all the time from these places and not once have i been had for import duty infact i recieved a load of eliquids today and some batteries and it took 9 days with netherlands post and as usual no duty. I suggest if you're that concerned about import duty that you stay well away from all chinese phones and other products from the far east. To get a cheap phone you always have to take a chance otherwise get yourself a MototG 4 or something like from the UK and if you concerned about import duty you will be really concerned to learn that the warranties on these handsets is none existent, you have to return them to China at your own cost and you may never see the phone again.

Why do people feel the need to constantly post about import duty and UK customs.

Mine arrived yesterday and so far so good. Had 53% battery at first so charged to fully before turning it on and literally took me 5 mins to have it set up. It looks really classy and really quick so was worth the wait in the end!

If anyone's after one of these before Christmas I'm selling one (silver 3GB / 32GB model).
It's in fantastic condition and there's not a scratch on it.
Boxed with all original packaging.
Comes with gel case (although a bit tight fitting as it's for the non-global version of the phone).
Tempered glass screen protector fitted (slightly short as it's for the non-global version of the phone).

Please note the following:
- buttons at the bottom (Menu, Home, Back) don't light up for some reason, but you can see the outline and they work absolutely fine
- when using my wired handsfee kit it didn't detect the microphone for some reason (the microphone on the handset itself remained active). A microphone on a bluetooth handsfree kit DID work as expected.

Great phone but as I use the wired hands free all the time I bought another of the same phone!

Just to update mine was delivered while I was away (to the good neighbour and not the shifty one). It is a 3GB/32GB model.

Booted up and did upgrade to 8.1.1.0 took about 30min to download and about 45 min for upgrade. Sits on the boot screen so long you think it's stuck but does eventually finish.

Literally just had a quick play and all seems ok (Not moved sim across yet). Screen is ok, brightness and contrast are a little poor but not bad. Also detects my Piston 3's as the mic is open all the time so sound is wrong (but other headphones work fine). The jack on the pistons is quite thin and might be the issue. If I pull the plug out 2-3mm they work fine. Solution anybody?

Now just need to use this phone and the Gigaset one and decide which one I'm keeping and which one will be going to my little bro for Xmas. Then I can put my V500 into retirement. :smiley:

Another option is to check play store for Super backup and restore.

you can use that app to backup your data and texts to your google drive, and then restore from google drive on the new phone! Easy as that.

If you have less than 250 contacts, you can transfer contacts via sim. Xperia Z1 instructions here. Once contacts are on sim, put it into the Xiaomi, open 'Contacts', long press menu button (bottom left capacitive). This'll bring up options to import from sim onto the phone, or you can keep them in your sim and change "Display Preferences" in order to show sim contacts. Another method is using a backup app. Just search "contacts backup" on Play Store. There's lots of them. The app will create a backup file. Transfer that file over then download the same app you used, in order to restore using the backup.

Just to add - I had to update from MIUI 7 but it popped up immediately with the upgrade option.

The SIM and SD are labelled on the slot as well so it's pretty much impossible to get wrong. Also it inserts facedown!!

I also selected India and it doesn't seem to make a different. Google tells me it is for the MI Store which I'm not gonna use.

Also I converted a TPU Redmi Note 2 case for this and it fits OK... converted means cut holes in!

I have a plastic snap case and I'm going to cut the fingerprint hole and speaker hole this evening if I can. The plastic case snaps on nice and clips over the edges well so hopefully will be good

That is one of the problems with these cheap Chinese phones; they try to cut down on licencing costs by removing things that the phone on a hardware level should support. E.G., Qualcomm QuickCharge, and now aptX. Disappointing

The phone is actually much nicer to use with a temperered glass protector because it raises the height of the screen fractionally and you don't constantly find yourself swiping against the lip of the bezel edge.

I'm surprised so many people are keen to buy without the warranty. Is that because of the cost of returning it to China or the cost of warranty?

i bought mine from Aliexpress and didn't have to pay any tax. If you select DHL delivery then you are likely to pay tax. That's been my experience.

word of warning though... i've had to send mine to have repaired (paid by the warranty i took out) as the rear camera wouldn't focus on anything and the proximity sensor stopped working. I really hope they can fix it because it is a great phone but having read some reviews on the Xiaomi forum it looks to be a common problem.

Gearbest call it the Overseas edition and according to specs it does support B20 but they don't highlight that fact nor refer to it as Kate or Special Edition since it's referred to by different things. Simply known as Taiwan version in some other sites. 1 person asks about the dimensions to clarify it is the taller Kate version. The reply just reiterates the dimensions stated in the description and then they say it's the Overseas edition. I dont think they know of it as Kate or Special Edition so they wouldn't modify any case titles or descriptions when they don't even seem to modify the product page for the Special Edition phone itself.

Took the plunge and ordered on my pc, unfortunately did not remove warranty, did get another $10 off and went through quidco for another 7.5%, had to make a claim last time but Ali express did honour it and paid out. update quidco:- just tracked at full price £162.54, cashback £12.19, so fingers crossed.

I really dont think it is, I think they answered previous question incorrectly and now realise and say its not. to the most recent
none of the customer reviews mention the special version (you would think they would as you cant get ones) and the most recent question says its not + it doesnt mention anywhere in title or description (another huge selling point if it was).
It might fit but its not a case 'made' for this special version

But then if you scroll further down there's 2 more different questions with answers saying the opposite and that it is compatible and fits. I mentioned an XDA thread in an earlier comment. There was this comment with a similar case from Gearbest which apparently fits too.

Just ordered on smartphone browser (not app) and it removed the warranty and it only charged me $139.99 (£113.29) seemed to have added a '$10 off coupon' by itself. Happy days!

It's the kernel that's the important bit...not the ROM.

I haven't done it myself because I am happy enough with the phone as it is. But I did read up on it.

(The other thing of note enabled by a new kernel is double tap to wake)

No quick charge on the standard kernel. But if you flash a custom kernel then it enables Quick Charge.

nope, but i emailed the seller and they confirmed it doesn't have quick charge 2.0 or 3.0 but can take up to 2amp charge, someone earlier in the post has one and said it takes about 1hr 30mins to get 70% charge in it with lower charger.

They're both the same phone except that Xiaomi have gone the Mediatek route with the 4, whereas the 3 is Qualcomm Snapdragon. There's a slight performance boost in some scenarios but we're not exactly talking Snapdragon 821 here and performance is weaker in other areas. There also isn't a LTE Band 20 version as far as I'm aware. Personally, I don't think the 4 is worth the extra money.

Aesthetically, perhaps. But it's quite nice having a flat rather than a 2.5D curved screen (screen protectors work better).

The actual internals are the same - and unlike the Mi Max, this one isn't going to get broken nearly as easily.

I can connect to our main WiFi hub anywhere in the house. First phone I've been able to do that with. (Normally have to switch to one of the other access points)

In comparison with the Xiaomi Mi Max, this Note 3 looks horrible.

I got stung for £20 on a £200 purchase by santander when i paid in euros using the website.

​I don't let it go battery go bellow 20% and tend to pull out of charger when 90 ish % from 20% to 90% is less than 1. 5 hours and phone is just slightly warm with a 1.5amp charger. The supplied charger is 2amp so maybe quicker? No quick charge but it's a big battery so lasts 2 days if you go easy.

Very tempting. Although I'm still smarting from the experience of my Oukitel K6000 Pro from Lightinthebox that refuses to fully charge.

PS i guess if Trump wins the US election the dollar may fall and this will be even cheaper? :-)

There are standard version cases that will fit. The difference in height is about 2.5mm. Here's an XDA thread with people discussing it. There's a lot of comments and some people have posted photos of their how their cases fit and where they bought them. There's also official cases on the Taiwan MI site since this is a Taiwan model but they're not easy to buy since I don't think they do international shipping. Some comments on that XDA thread mention them and a few members bought them using a shopping agent.

This is the 'Kate' model so bigger (~5mm longer I believe) than the regular 'Kenzo' model so take that into account when buying accessories.

I got this phone and it's fantastic. Camera is ok and so far im pleased with it having owned lg g4 before. Not really sat at pc yet to have a closer look at pictures but to get a phone with this spec at £120 is a good buy. Getting screen protection is no problem but the cases are a little harder to find. Best order at the time of purchasing phone. I bought from aliexpress and took 13 days to arrive with no duty to pay. Seems if you go with the faster route, with DHL then custom duty will be added.
