That was a very different game. It was also very good though. There was a sequel to that as well, I do remember playing that a LOT.

No defender, no river raid - combat was pretty naff on single player... However, do check out a PXP2 - around £12 from eBay / Amazon. Tonnes of sega favourites, can plug into a TV. Worth a look, some good reviews on YouTube.

I've had a play on a pxp2 and to be honest they're not great. Very cheaply made, all plastic body, no weight to them. They'd do a job, but I personally wouldn't have one having spent some time with it. For a quick cheap and cheerful blast from the past they'd be ok I suppose.

sure emulation is a better way forward ?? a pi zero could do this

TBH emulation and these things won't look as good on today's TV's. I still have my Sony broadcast monitor. Playability wise it might be better and faster lol

I've no idea what happened to my original 2600, I'm sure it never broke and I wouldn't have sold it... Are the 'real' ones still kicking around, or are they all broken or extortionate these days? (The proper 'wood' ones, not the later plastic ones)
PS: the spectrum on a 55 inch TV is pretty epic, both my kids like it despite piles of significantly more powerful hardware being available. I think the tapes and load time are the only thing they were a little miffed about.

I remember a game called saboteur on the specrum... That was class, albeit as soon as you'd memorised the route you could clock it in about 5 mins.

Oh I was just making a sweeping generalisation! I actually grew up on 8bit and had a C64 and NES- still feel that a lot of those games struggle to hold up, but there are loads of exceptions. Chrono Trigger is a brilliant game which I definitely need to replay at some point!

Slightly before my time but i've played a couple of those games and they have really dated.
Personally I feel the 16bit era is the best for "retro" gaming. The games were no longer constrained by hardware/controller issues, so many of them continue to be extremely playable. I'm currently playing through Secret of Mana with my two boys- they absolutely love it! :innocent:

I totally disagree about that 8 bit gaming doesn't have any value over 16bit gaming, there's great 8 bit gaming on the ZX Spectrum and C64 and some on the BBC Micro as well (Elite for example). Where else can you play Jet Set Willy, StarQuake, Manic Miner, Skool Daze and Back to Skool to name but a few.
If you haven't already then try Chrono Trigger on the SNES.

Yes you're right, my friend has the Mini Nintendo Classic and Pac Man on that is a lot closer to the arcade version than the awful Atari port which as you'll see from the video I posted earlier in this thread truly is dreadful.
The Atari 2600 with Harmony Cartridge is better than this deal but not as cheap.

I'm right in thinking that most of these games require no more thought than 'UP', 'DOWN', 'LEFT' and 'RIGHT' in various combinations? Some of them like Pong are maybe just 'UP' and 'DOWN? I'm not saying that these can't be fun but if there's something more involved on the table then these won't have any longevity. I don't think it's wrong to acknowledge that games back then were limited by the hardware they ran on.
