would this work with my sky broadband?

I am with BT so DSL is what I need. What's wrong with the modem part? I watched a few YouTube and website reviews that said it's great, but I'm seeing a few user comments saying the opposite...

On Virgin Media you have to use the Super Hub as the modem, there's simply no other option. That aside, the DSL-AC68U gets poor reviews for the modem aspect of it, and as the name denotes, I'm fairly sure it would only work if you have DSL.

Damn wish I had bought this instead of the Netgear r7800 nighthawk from a previous deal as it was a similar price and think asus makes better routers

It's very expensive but for those on adsl/vdsl the Fritzbox 7490 is absolutely amazing. WiFi strength is excellent b/g/n & ac with no unsightly aerials sticking out of it.

Just had a Google.

A change of verification method temporarily blocked them for many months on new routers.

Looks like the latest ASUS official firmware fixed this.

Is the DSL version not better as it includes the modem?
I don't get why these routers are so big and ugly these days, while still being as hollow as ever... it's bad enough they are so big and ugly without having to have the modem separate from the router :smirk:

Be warned - the latest ASUS firmware blocks installing unofficial firmware (such as Merlin) and isn't up to much itself.

Great router. about £100 less than i what I paid for it in 2015.
Can get over 800mbits over 802.11ac and 5GHz.
Fantastic range/signal strength and if you have two they play nice with each other and handover really well.
I'm often on VOIP calls with my laptop over wifi and I've swapped access points without any drops.
Considering a 3rd one for my garage (it's my home office) at this price.

You tried manually setting a static non overlapping 2.4GHz wireless channel (1, 6, or 11) on the virgin hub?
If none of the 3 channels works, time for a separate wireless router.

Would this help with my music 'tearing' issues with my Naim speaker system? It appears to do it more often when my lodger is here, so therefore using the wifi as well. That leads me to think an upgrade of router would be a good plan.

Is it the actual Virgin internet connection dropping or just the wireless?

If the former, a new wireless router won't help until you sort out the line connection issue with Virgin Media.

If the latter there are cheaper alternatives for a fraction of the cost: TP-LINK TL-WR940N 450 Mbps Wireless N Cable Router

This Asus Wireless Router is probably overkill for the vast majority, for power users or those with heavy wireless traffic, large buildings, buildings with thick walls, lots of wireless devices/users, lots of nearby 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless interference etc...

I would go with the RT-AC68U right now while it's still £100; don't know if that's too much for you.

love my asus router, best UPnP support I've had. With multiple consoles and users in the house all my previous routers gave me nat issues. I had a netgear 1700 or something like that and it sucked. And the bt one was terrible obviously. My asus is a different model, doesn't have the wireless range this one does but hopefully the upnp is just as good in these.

You still have to use the Virgin 'Hub' - just have to put it into modem only mode (this does what it says on the tin, and is the first thing i did with mine)
