not great headphones to be honest, there actually pretty naff. the amp that you get with the A40's is the only good thing about this brand. eBay just The amp and ebay a good quality pair of sennhieser headphones around the £100 mark or alt brands and get a MOD mic for better sound than what astro headphones provide.

At 250 they are very overpriced but this is a great price for a one box solution. Personally for this money I would get:
1) Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones - 80 Ohm £109.00 I don't think they've changed these much since the 80's largely because they are so good there is no need. Used in professional recording studios around the world.
Total of £116.20. 24 quid cheaper and you have a real quality pair of headphones that will last you a decade or more. If you are feeling fancy you could upgrade the mic to a modmic but there's no need.

I think some of the comments on here are pretty harsh.. I bought this headset last year for £135 at Argos and they're still going strong for me. I really enjoy them and they are the comfiest headset I've used for the PC, with the easiest turn on system around. Recommend from me

They are OK, but I have stopped using these and started wearing my old Hyperx Fury 2 as they are all the headphone you require and are going for £50, oval cups are better than round for glasses

Had my A50's since launch and they're still going strong, this price is a steal. I'd really like the Gen 3's, but can't justify forking out another £250 for a headset.

A little over £200 but the quality is untouchable. Mine are HD SE's. If you don't mind you can shop all bits on eBay to bring it in cheaper.

I agree.
Astro mix amp pro + 598's + Mic mod = the absolute business.
My mate has the A50's and he wishes he had that setup now. Some people think they're limited to what game retailers offer.

finding info like that comparing a gaming headset to a real quality pair of headphones is not an easy task. but if you heard it for yourself you would realise and take a look on any audiophile site where people discuss headphones for gaming. the reason they say there a gaming headset is to obviously target gamers hoping that they don't know any better (which was me at one point, but now I know better). just do a little research yourself. I'm not knocking anyone who uses them, that's up to them especially if there happy with them. I'm just trying to show people an alternative with better quality sound that can be used anywhere and is either the same price in total or cheaper.

rebornadd, sorry but by the sounds of it you don't own the A50 gen 3 so where are you getting your information from that these are terrible? I have been looking for a decent set of gaming headphones and read nothing but great reviews on these. If you have a source showing some proper audio testing against quality alternatives then please share for everyones benefit.

I got the A50's going on 3 years now. Got them brand new for £140 off gumtree. They are good for FPS, everything they suck. I used to like them alot, but after purchasing £90 stereo headphones by AKG. I realised how terrible in quality the astros were. Muddy bass is the biggest problem with them. Battery life isn't great and it feels outdated, cheap build quality aswell.

I have the A40's and Mixamp pro that I use with PS4, Xbone and just watching the tv sometimes and I think they are great. I actually rate the headphones despite people saying they are junk. I also Have some Sen HD 518's I use when I am not in chat with the mix amp and they do sound a little better but the A40's block more external sound and are more bassy which sounds great when a thermal imploder goes off in Star Wars Battlefront. I have tried a few turtle beach units including wireless and they just were not as good. I also tried a turtle beach DSS2 and found the surround to not be as wide or convincing as the mixamp.

Same here. As an all in one solution they're perfect for me.
I've not really looked at other amps but to be honest from what I've seen the astro mix amp pro is perfectly fine if you buy one in working order from eBay and don't want to spend to much, that way you can spend the bulk of your money on some really good headohones

I disagree completely. I've had mine for 2+ years and I've never had a single complaint. Very comfortable, legitimately fully wireless unlike a lot of console designed headsets and excellent build quality.
The sound is superior to any other headsets I've used, personally.

Thanks a lot for this post - I need a solution to my PC sound, and I was thinking along these lines, but I had no clue where to start looking - MODMic is a great new search avenue I know nothing about. Ideally I'll find a wireless solution.
In terms of amps, I'm still floundering but I was looking at T-amps, like the TOPPING VX1.

considering these are like £200 - £250 new £140 is obviously a good price BUT for what the product is and what they offer I wouldn't pay £60. the mix amp pro is the best thing about astro's as the headphones themselves are pretty bad sound wise.

The TR was terrible. It had some really weird reverb and it sounded like you were playing inside a tin can. The older ones are much better. That said, I prefer Creative's SBX and you can get this for £20 with a preowned Recon 3D USB. The internal amp is weaker though than the MixAmp which could be an issue depending on which headphones you use.
I am using 250 ohm DT770's and a V-Moda Boom pro and it copes fine with it actually. I don't have it at ear shattering volumes.

not sure when it comes to the mod mic but go for the astro mix and pro. as I said in my comment the amp is the only good thing about the astro's can pick up just the mix amp pro for around £30 I believe. I heard bad things about the mix amp TR, though that was a good few months back so things may have changed, I'm not sure

if you have ever used a quality pair of headphones you will know that the sound from them is far superior to the astro headset and any other gaming headset on the market. but if there good for you that's fine. just trying to help anyone out that wants a better experience as gaming headset including astros tend to be VERY bass heavy and but suffer elsewhere.

These are a different model to the ones Game have on offer. This one is the older Gen 2 where as Game have the latest Gen 3. Main differences are this can be used on PS4/Xbox/PC but the new ones have different base stations for PS4 and Xbox. However those base stations are now a charging dock on the new Gen 3, they have longer batteries and they have mod support (you can swap the ear cushions)
