Was in Waitrose Rushden today and had boxed (not display models) Macbooks in Gold for £899, while they are currently retailing for £1049 in most other places...

This is a larger Waitrose Store, which has a large home section, with a range of electrical goods, and in line with John Lewis they offer a three year guarantee on all Apple Macbook products.
(The label says two years, but was assured it was three years by the staff.)

They are also selling the Space Grey (MJY32B/A) for £999 and the standard Silver (MF855B/A) for £1049, but all are exactly the same specs. If you can put up with Gold, this is the bargain version to go for.

Many places including eBay are selling refurbished MacBooks for around £900, so if you can get a brand new one with three years warranty this is a no brainer.

Role on the Apple haters and rants how Apple overprice their products, even if this is reduced price. If you don't like Apple, why not move on to the next post and to a product you like! :stuck_out_tongue:

Amazing how a post about a Mac draws in moronic comments like these, yea all Apple users are brainwashed idiots who don't know any better, FFS. Have you got so little time you need to take the time to write such BS. Go to any gig, studio design company , music university, you will find the majority of computers to be a Mac, do you think all these people like to buy an expensive computer just for the fun of it? cos it's shiney & silver? there are millions of professional music makers and creative professionals that rely on these machines because. hey are very good at what they do..so grow & stop being jealous, I bet you've never even used a Mac in your life!
FWIW I'm not a Mac fan I work with PC's and Mac's, it's a computer that out lasts the majority of cheap plastic computers, go buy a top of the range pro PC and you'll pay a similar price. Business & creative pro's choose a pro computer because it's reliable not something because it's shiney & silver with Apple on it. Watch one of the biggest IT support companies in the world talk about Mac's & PC"s in business.

BTW I don't like the new Mac Pro's & it's novelty bar, it's thinner (who really cares) means smaller battery, the jack has lost the optical in & it's bloody expensive compared to the old models, USB-C ports are something else , a lot of PC's will go this way, ten times more powerful than a plain old USB port. Comment on the post in question in future not just because you hate people that use a Mac..that just makes you look stupid.

MacBooks are amazing. You non-Apple muggles just don't get the magic of Apple stuff and never will. It's not about specs. Furthermore, I will conclude this by saying that Macbooks aren't expensive. You can buy, use it for a year, and then sell it and still recoup 80% of what you paid. Why? Because Macbooks are desirable. How much will you get for your Windows laptop after a year? Nothing, because no one wants to buy one second hand.

MK4M2B/A - This would be the older 2015 model. It's still a very good laptop, but with the 2016 model you get faster RAM, disk and GPU speeds (but slightly lower turbo clock speeds for base model). I had this in silver for a year and had bootcamp on it. Bootcamp ran very well, I was even able to game on it. The touchpad is so good, I could play a competitive FPS without a mouse. No Windows laptop touchpad comes anywhere close. Gaming battery life was surprisingly good, around 4 hours continuous 3D gaming. People who say this is underpowered usually underestimate the Core Mmmmmm.

It's just outrageous really the practices that Apple get up to and what their customers have to put up with. A £900 laptop with only ONE port which forces you have a load of dongles (at extra £cost) dangling out the side of the laptop? The Apple customer base really needs to wise up....

It's definitely not about specs - it's more about what Apple think they can get away with in terms of fleecing their customers. Look at the new (old) Macbook Pro. Great opportunity to have put a Pascal GPU there and yet what do Apple do? They put in some old, low performing Radeon chipset and still jack up the price!

I used to OWN a 2012 Macbook Pro so unlike yourself I actually know what I'm talking about. In case you hadn't noticed, you were the one who tried to turn things into some weird PC v Mac flame war in response to someone correctly pointing out the (ridiculous) need for a load of dongles on the Macbook because it only comes with one port.

£900 for a Macbook 12 is laughably poor value for money, and you'll be spending another £50+ buying a load of dongles for it.

I was pondering on whether to reply to you or not as you seem quite immature. You seem to take it personally if somebody has a differing opinion to you. For all you know I may have an honours degree in IT and that I may have been working in IT for the past 2 decades. That the experience I have allows me to have a good job where I don't need to work weekends.
As for being off topic, I'd rather take that risk if I can help another person make an informed choice on why buying an over priced Apple product is not a good idea then so be it.

So any 'System' equivalent's to which you speak of (be that a fully fledged Computer of sorts?, &/or a Laptop and the like?), will inevitably HAVE to be Apple Branded?, so ..... (somewhat limiting the field of scope for your above needed 'competitive alternatives', etc, etc, etc?, lol. :-)

I don't agree with you boomish. People like myself read the comments in each thread to see others opinions on the product of which they may know more than others about. I've owned Macs since they were an unsightly brown box and people like yourself would never have heard of them. But I sold my G5 tower setup several years ago because they just aren't powerful enough for what they once were marketed as. I've been a graphic/UX designer most of my life, and anyone who buys this for that reason will quickly find a new level of patience waiting for simple Photoshop tasks to happen. I also teach privately and it always makes me chuckle when I have to wait for my students laptops (inevitably a new macbook pro) to catch up with mine. One that cost far less than theirs and simply leaves their outdated and outspecced machine in the dust.

Yes you can get a much better resale value, but why suffer for several years with a sluggish, impractically designed machine until you need to.

This isn't off topic or a mac-bashing post, just an informed opinion which may help someone considering if this is indeed a hot deal.

The new MacBook Pro has the SSD soldered into the logic board so it cant be upgraded.
Plus if your logic board goes as did on one of our works iMacs they bin the logic board and the SSD now so your data goes too.
We were lucky on our 21.5" iMac we managed to get one last backup done before sending off for apple care repair. (no 'sensitive data'.)
When iMac was returned by apple the NEW logic board and OLD SSD and data was there - happy days.
With new rMBP this would NOT happen - possible data loss.
Really bad move by apple very disappointed hope they U turn on this next year.

Soldering the RAM was bad but apple have crossed the line of acceptance in soldering the SSD. Thank goodness my 2015 13" rMBP is perfect as I would not upgrade due to the soldering of the SSD.
Phil Schiller didn't tell us this new 'feature' in the recent key note...wonder why.

It's not just about the hardware I have a Mac because of the OS which is far superior to windows, and virus free.

Now, I'm a fan of IOS (even though I currently have an android device) but MacOS is a Horrible operating system IMO, opening and managing more than one instance of the same program is a absolute chore, constantly having that menu bar and quick launch bar in screen is a stupid waste of screen real estate. I'll concede that it is less vulnerable than older Windows operating systems but windows 8.1/10 has caught up pretty quickly.

I remember having to change the DVD drive in a mac mini (in the last version that actually had one). Once installed, OSX refused to recognise the DVD drive I used to install the OSX in the first place. Predictably, the same DVD drive worked fine in bootcamp (windows) once installed on the Mac mini.

There was a short period of time when apple started getting more consumer friendly (about five years ago), when you could upgrade the ram and hdd on their system without a problem, not days though, and all those dongles, yeesh.

Apple get virus's same as Windows, not sure what kind of protection you need to use on Apples though. Use an adblocker and virus checker on Windows and the chance of getting a virus is pretty remote

Wasn't even aware of this or thought of it until you said it. I was always worried about the lack of modularity since they went to Retina MacBooks because the logic board has such high inherent value but with a fixed SSD that just seems ridiculous. All in the quest for thinness. So worst case you could buy one, have a year and a bit's use before a hypothetical fault, then find it's out of warranty and therefore a total write-off because the logic board will be so expensive to replace (I think even the older Retina MBPs were about £600 for the board).
deany76
17 Nov 16 #48
Yep the SSD on the 2016 rMBP with precious data would go in the bin with the logic board.
As you say a 12 month and 2 week out of warrantee apple repair would be approx £1000 (based on a recent apple care iMac Logic board replacement I asked how much would it have cost answer approx £600 add SSD you have £1000 at least.

The thing is they put the old
SSD in the new logic board so, iMac arrived after repair - booted up Voila! all data there.
This would not happen with the 2016 rMBP - there is a hidden 'port' on the logic board that apple MAY be able to backup our precious data but this should not have to be put in this predicament.

The soldering of the SSD onto logic board has nothing to do with making the 2016 rMBP thinnier, sorry to tell you that as my heart sank and I thought WTH.
Upgrading the hard drive on a 2016 rMBP as times move on for EXTRA storage is a thing of the past.
Really hope apple U turn in this.
Cheers
ps

I'm sure if you queried Apple they would say it's thinness. If you see the added thickness of a few mm for having the module slot and the module, they can shave this off without it. Now, that may or may not be true but who really knows. The SD reader has also gone. The computer looks nice but it's definitely switched to form over function. I appreciate many Windows Ultrabooks are also non-modular but at least they are so much cheaper as well to make up for it. I've found we are still selling the pre-2012 iMacs at good prices because of the simple fact adding an SSD or more RAM is such a simple procedure (largely speaking).
deany76
17 Nov 16 #50
Hi
Not even thinness is the crazy reason for soldering the SSD to logic board on 2016 rMBP-
SSD can be made to point away from the logic board instead of being on top of the logic board.

Surely, (Don't call me Shirley?) the average laptop user, just like the average anything user, does not use the device to its' full capability. Myself included. After years of other laptops, I bought a MacAir a few years ago and thought it was brilliant. Why? Cos it was shiny and silver and felt really well made. I gave it away recently and have been bought a newer MacBook for Xmas, which I cannot comment on yet of course. Currently I am 'making do' with an old Sony Vaio which does everything I need but I still want the MacBook. That's all that matters when buying something, are you prepared to pay what it costs to have it? Yes Apple are expensive laptops. Yes Nike are expensive sporting goods. Audi are expensive cars. If you can afford it and want it, why should anyone else have a problem with you? I do not understand people who get upset by other peoples purchase preferences and offensive in the process!?

Opinions are like bum holes.. everyone has one and most of them stink.
