Last year, you could use your card in multiple One stop shops as they are all classed as individual business. As long as they are on the map and registered, then OK. Good for Chanchi's stamps, as some sell them in books over the counter. They also usually have some good deals on, like chocolates, wine, whisky etc.
Also it says giftcards and vouchers aren't applicable, last year I ate out for ages and ages with restaurant giftcards and vouchers. Some local butchers also sell gift vouchers, generally valid for 6 months.

Right, off to write my list, on the back of a roll of lining paper and taking my bargain hunting suite to the cleaners, ready for the fun.

Second this, happened to me last year, AMEX cust service tends to be fairly amazing.

My wife has a supplementary card but doesn't get these benefits. Do I have to register her online separately somehow. I don't see how to just add her card in my account.

They have been since ~2003 and fitted in rather well in years past :smile:

Expect to see a degree of change in shops listed between now and the event, as some are removed and some new join. If those ones are still listed on 3rd December, then see my post above - drop a complaint to Amex and they'll likely credit you £5 for each one.

fully aware that AMEX are much more expensive than mastercard / visa and take longer to pay although if a shop signs up to AMEX.. they could at least accept it

The map can be a bit of a Joke and I've just checked three places that don't take Amex and didn't last year and they are still showing. I had credits for two last year as I visited them, but never claimed for the third as I phoned and asked first. I was hoping the map would be more accurate this year.
Some merchants don't show, but are still valid as I found out last year. An independent butchers for example. Worth making one test purchase if you need anything and see if you get the confirmation email. You can then max up with other cards.
One Stop isn't showing (yet) sadly, but I'll still try one out and see what happens. I did (ab)use them quite a bit last year though.
My target is 50 purchases this year (minimum), but I did hit 70+ last year (over three cards). One Stop shops did help though!

I visited the Chinese Buffet in Wigan last year and was told on paying the bill that they don't accept Amex. I was on the phone to Amex immediately after, and £5 was promptly credited to my account.

I've noticed that this year my DENTIST is on the list. That's rather weird really.

​They are a horrible card to accept, when I first dealt with them (directly) they took 5% of sale. Reconciling was a major pain, rather than get charged a fee at the end of a month they would take the fee from each transaction so nothing tallied. Each time we change card provider Amex is added on despite us saying we don't want it and have to force supplier to remove them from our machine.
When we cancelled Amex, I told them why and they offered to reduce our fees to just over 1% - that galvanised me to definitely cancel as they had just been lining their pockets with our money.

Is the Amex Small Shop offer available to load to any Amex issued cards? Like the Nectar,Costco and basic Amex credit card?

It's available for all American Express cards except Corporate & TSB issued ones.

Amex-issued: (e.g. Nectar, CostCo, Basic etc.) login to their online account and save to card.
Amex-issued supplementary cards: login to their online account (or create one if not yet done so) and save to card.

Non Amex-issued (both regular and supplementary): (e.g. MBNA, Barclaycard, Lloyds) use the link in the post to sign up to the program.

The world has moved on and hopefully this sort of pricing will be a thing of the past. I avoid any place which accepts American express because their margins are way too high if they can absorb these sort of fees.

This is absolutely brilliant. There are quite a few restaurants I can go to with this. Taking £5 off a night out a couple of times in the run-up to Christmas will be a nice way to save some money and will probably sway me into go out instead of staying in.

Shop small is great, I used it a few time last year and will again this year. if you have more than 1 amex card get you bill split if the cashier/waiter is willing ie £5 off per £10. I agree with some of the other posts that the map does show some shops that say they accept and don't, and also doesn't show some shops that do. I have had the BA amex card for a while and have found the customer service over the phone to be excellent. The card if free and collect 1 avios point per £1. If you are referred by someone you also get an increased sign up bonus. a good site for all things points related is http://www.headforpoints.com.

One Stop doesn't seem to be included this year.

Some aren't owned by Tesco - some are franchise stores. Those should be 'independent' - and hence may be 'small shops' - but there's no guarantee.

I can't find a single one listed in any area or post code I check. Even specific post codes or streets where there are stores which worked last year.

I'd wait and check if they have the 'Shop Small' logo showing.
If they have, then it should be OK, even if you have to be credited by Amex customer services.

Used this last year to great effect. Now there are double the amount for this year in my town. I had one which didn't accept amex on the list but amex paid the £5 anyway.

I wonder where you buy your groceries from then? Local greengrocer, fishmonger, butcher etc?

Brilliant, used last year and for stocking fillers and a few drinks on nights out. Never had any issues, in most cases the £5 credit was on the same day as purchase. Also agree with other users about customer services. I (stupidly) lost a card and they were fantastic sorting everything out.....Fudge Kitchen cashback, yum!

About shops not wanting to take Amex...

No one can have a problem with this if it's the shop's commercial decision not to sign up to Amex in the first place.
None at all.

What I find infuriating is when a shop has the Amex logo on display, or a "Shop Small" logo in the window, and is on the Amex Shop Small map ( I'm told by Amex that all retailers will have had to opt in to the Shop Small promotion),
but then the staff say that they don't take Amex, or that the machine isn't working, or they want to add an extra charge on the transaction.

Just pick a flipping side and stick to it!
That way, everyone knows where they stand, and there's no awkward moments or wasted time, all around

I expect a lot of people have the Amex Nectar Credit Card due to the recent promotion on that and it does qualify for Shop Small.

Another popular card is the Amex Platinum Cashback Credit Card although these days it's better to go for the free "Everyday" version as they have reduced the benefits on the paid version.

Another option for a fee-free card is the Basic (Blue) charge card. It has no fee but also no benefits except you can sign it up to some offers, of which Shop Small is one of them.

You could also take out the Gold Rewards charge card free for the first year.

Why not take a look at the American Express web site and see what suits you?

Nope, that's certainly not the normal approach.

I've been to my hairdressers today and although they are on the list they are not taking Amex, I wonder if I go back while this offer is on and buy some nice shampoo if Amex will still honour it?

If it's llike years in the past, if they're still listed on 3/12, send a complaint email to Amex via your account explaining that they wouldn't accept Amex and they'll then most likely credit you £5 - no need to prove your (non Amex) purchase.

Yes you can but you have to use the signup page which I believe is mentioned earlier in this discussion thread. I know it works as I tried it myself and it now shows as opted in on the Amex iPhone app.

Btw the basic card can only be applied for via post, or at least that was the case close to a year ago when I got mine. It also took them ages to process the application!

That is what I was thinking,all the other cards can be done online but you have to download the form for this one and post it off.

I buy lots of giftcards,even from the Post Office like "one 4 all". And always get the £5 credited.

Go ahead - Amex just knows the retailer and the transaction amount. It doesn't know what's been purchased - and it doesn't much care. :smiley:

I passed a One Stop shop today and no signage that they take Amex. Not to say they don't though and I'll still take a tenner chance.
Please update any successes or failures with One Stop shops.

I just called AMEX and they said you could use it once per day per merchant, so you could use it everyday in the same shop ... not quite sure that I believe them, so I will call them again, to check with a different person ... I have re-read the T & Cs and I must say it's not crystal clear

Once per individual shop per card is my expectation (in line with previous years).

Just called Amex back and I was given wrong information the other day ... you're right it's once per merchant during the time period ... they need to fire these people who give out false information!

Glad they cleared it up. I'm sure it was an honest mistake, but not great and definitely out of the ordinary for what I and many others seem to find faultless customer service.

The last couple of calls I've made to Amex (within UK business hours) have been answered overseas, whereas in the past it has been 100% British people in Brighton. It's also the first time I've received "bad" customer service from Amex. A refund of £2032 was processed as £20.32. I hope it's not a sign of things to come.

True - but given that Amex simply sees a transaction, and not details of the transaction, it's difficult to see how gift vouchers could be excluded (and they haven't been in previous years).

CONFIRMED: I bought £10.44 stamps at a convenience store from last year's list - not on this year's list - and it was fine, got the success email

Got two shops done today, my local butcher where I paid with chips and pin and got the email straight away and an ice cream shop where I paid via contact less. Didn't get an email from the last one but not too worried as I had no issues last year :smiley:

There's a lot of shops, especially newsagents, near me which have been on the Shop Small map in previous years but don't appear this year. I'm inclined to think this is an error/omission and I should give them a try.

The map can only show 100 locations.

I've found that focusing in on a location makes more places appear (as they were not included within the 100 limit). This could be why they were not "on the map" from the start...

£5 credit from Amex Customer Services as expected for reporting a failed attempt to use the card in a listed store. They will contact the store and remove them from the promo listing if there not accepting the card.

They told me the exact same thing last year and believe it or not, some shops, merchants and bars stated they have never taken Amex..............ever.

Used my card at a confirmed location on the list this morning and no email! Used chip and pin, so why hasn't it triggered the email? Has anyone found they received an email later? I always seem to get them instantly on these offers.

Contactless I'm used to not generating the emails, but chip and PIN usually always will immediately.

I've just finished a call with Amex customer service and they stated they weren't aware of any issues! They did say they would report the issue to their IT department though. I'm hoping that the £5 rebates come through naturally like contactless transactions do. I'll know within the next few days I'd imagine. Hard work if you need to keep asking for a manual claim though!

The usual adventure of Shop Small where some merchants said they didn't take Amex, or slapped on a charge (one wanted £2!!).

I just wish they wouldn't sign up to Amex if they so hated processing it- then we'd all know where we stood

For goodness sake. Why all the fuss about emails? Why not just wait for the credit and leave any fussing for the unlikely event of its not turning up?

I reported one Saturday morning, had a response early Sunday morning (from India) and £5 credit showing in my online account by this morning (Monday).

Login to your Amex account (assuming Amex issued card) and send an email to them via the online facility. "Contact Us" link from the main landing page once you've logged in, then "Email American Express" link, then "Write a Message".

Sounds like classic Amex Shop Small times. Amazing how many of the shops have no idea about the promo either.

Hopefully that means notifications are back to normal today then, as wouldn't expect them for Contactless from what I've experienced before.

I think some of the email discussion is about how to contact Amex for a store that refuses/doesn't accept the card.

Agree, if it's just concern about Sunday's transactions, give it until the end of the week to see if the credit shows in your account before contacting Amex (whether phone - local Brighton number on back of card, or secure email via your online account).

Yes, same here. A few I want to use aren't on the map, but have the Shop Small logo displayed.
The map isn't accurate and that's being polite. Not the standard you'd expect from Amex to be honest, although their customer service if exceptional.

Lots of restaurant / pub vouchers / giftcards which lasted quite a while............................. longer than the booze anyway!

I remember making £700 out of it, I was running around with 5 cards & 140 transactions = 28 shops, it was definitely that - mostly stamps

If I may add my tuppence worth i went to stores last year that wouldnt accept it and tried them again this year and they did! Idid one thing differently last year ... Iasked didthey accept amex. to which they said no! This year I just used it like any other card..tapped onfor contactless and said notthing. and it worked. This might be something to consider :smiley:

I tried a One-Stop on Saturday. No email received and no £5 credit, yet at least. I say yet because I have read elsewhere that One-Stop works this year too. It's possible I just didn't receive the Shop Small email.

Anyone had any success at getting two statement credits from the same shop using a second supplimentary card? We shopped on Saturday and can see both transactions online but only one statement credit so far. Both cards are signed up.

went to around 20 newsagents that do oyster top ups & supposedly accept amex according to the shop small site. Only about 5 accepted amex and fees ranged from 25p to £2! Will be emailing amex about the rest.

The newsagents are the worst as they often have 'we accept amex' signs in the windows yet soon as you crack out an amex card it's 'no no no, not amex'.

any ideas on this? just logged in to my partner's supplementary card account and the shop small offer is showing as redeemed in the my offers, yet in my account it's showing as available.

£5 credits are now showing on my cards from Sunday purchases and are matching correctly against the store, rather than manual credits.
So, it looks like the email notifications were broke, but not the actual tracking (the real important bit).
I got a credit for a merchant who no longer accepts Amex (hasn't done for over three years), so I'll gamble with a One Stop shop later in the week. If it doesn't work, the credit will cover it. If it does work, the credit will be given to charity.

It's fine, as you can redeem it multiple times.

My credit for a spend on Sunday is now showing in my account, so no problems despite emails not being sent. Hope that puts some minds at rest :laughing::wink:

I discovered a new excuse a merchant used for not wanting to take Amex.

Previously, I've had a simple "we don't take Amex" (despite having logos all over the shop and being on the Shop Small map)
and "the machine won't take Amex",
not to mention card usage charges varying from 50p to £3 (yes! - last year)

Today, a grocer claimed that the shop had reached the "credit limit" for Amex or the machine.
This was at 1pm in an area where most transactions would almost certainly be with cash.
Does any retailer on here think this is a real thing??

And I've also found that some merchants who had no issues with Amex last year show reluctance this year, and vice versa....

Why do merchants who don't like Amex (for whatever reason) sign up to Amex?
Can anyone explain this irrational behaviour?

I've been to a different Premier Store today, which is on the map, but wouldn't sell at the promoted offers. I walked away.

Ha, tbh, I have. Complaints from family, I only usually buy ingredients for meals. They also complain that they are bored with my, admittedly narrow, but superbly executed, baking repertoire. So, it was crisps and ice cream :smiley:

Does anyone know if the Small shop offer works in post office? I noticed a couple of post office near me listed on the map. Have already got the post office offer but wonder if i could use the small shop offer on a card which didn't have the post office offer.

Certainly won't work for all POs. Theoretically should work wherever is listed on the map however I have found oddities, for example "London Bridge London Underground Station" is listed on the map. TFL is certainly not a 'small shop' :laughing: but I've been there twice now (different cards) to get new oyster cards to top up. Haven't had credits through but I'll ping amex by the end of the week and chase them

My nearest Post Office is listed on Shop Small. So what will happen if I make a £10 purchase from there? Will the first one trigger the Post Office offer and the second Shop Small? Maybe I'll get both rewards triggered at once? Has anybody experience of this?

the only discussion I've had this year was positive for Amex - the butcher (£40 Xmas joint split over 4 cards :smiley: ) knew that Amex charges had come down

re: the irrational behaviour - I don't think they had a choice on Amex, ie they signed up for the card machine/ transaction device that was sold as a bundle, incl Visa, MC & Amex - so is capable of processing all those cards and maybe others such as Diners. Then they realise Amex is/ was more expensive so instruct staff not to accept Amex cards

yep - you won't get Shop Small at the Post Office counter, only in the shop associated with it

My local post office has a "WHSmith Local" inside. It is however the post office itself which is listed for Shop Small.

It's a mistake - no Post Offices are included in Shop Small

Getting a little fed up with these dodgy newsagents and their moaning about Amex. Just popped into one for an Oyster top up. Asked if they take cards for payment, said yes. I managed to ram my Amex into the reader before he saw it was an Amex (past experience tells me v likely chance of saying no). Processed fine then he saw when I was taking it out and shouted at me how dare I pay on Amex (despite whacking on a £1 fee).

I've been trying to do them all chip and pin so far so they track properly. I'm now thinking about using Apple Pay as they won't have a clue what card I'm using as long as they don't see the screen.. will they? Has anyone got experience using Apple Pay with regards to tracking? Assuming it's same case as contactless (got to wait a few days extra)?

He could still see Amex mentioned on the receipt, if he is eagle-eyed.

Actually I think this is a good question. I assume that Apple Pay transactions will qualify just as a standard contactless transaction will quality but does anybody have practical experience of this?

Why go through all that hassle? I learnt couple of 'shop-smalls' ago that some shopkeepers on the list just go mental at the mere mention of this card. This time I did not even bother and simply contacted Amex and got my credit.

I tell you what would be useful on that map - a pointer showing where you are on it!

Not everybody would necessarily have an alternative card. It's just as likely to say fine then, don't take my business.

I suppose the idea behind Amex giving the £5 credit is twofold. Firstly, to keep the customer happy and secondly, they will know which retailers are resisting Amex acceptance. It's in their interest to do something about the latter.

Sadly, the map is cr4p and could allow for abuse.
I went to a retail park the other day and two merchants listed have now long gone!

But, AMEX do need to get the map sorted for next year at least and don't seem to remove reported merchants who do not take, or have never took AMEX.
I've been to a butchers today, run by elderly chaps, who don't update their status, but still show the Shop Small logo in their window and like last year, email notification instantly. They should be included, others need to be removed! Luckily, the AMEX customer service is far, far superior to the Amex Shop Small map!

I used a Post Office on the Shop Small map. It was , however, not a Post Office counter, but a "Kiosk" within the post office. I got my £5 credit for Shop Small, but NOT for the Post Office deal.
So I'll have to use that in another fashion
You can buy one4all gift cards there, which you can use at a lot of places, or simply add to your amazon account

If a Post Office is listed on the map, then I'd suppose ( from my single experience so far) that there's a separate booth within the post office which sells stationary, oyster cards and sundries - which is where to go to.

Also, I don't think Post Office Counters sell Oyster cards

yesterday did 32 shops, got 32 emails so I am relaxed about it - obviously have to wait a few days in any case before making any calls

the thing to remember is that no 'post offices' are included in shop small - ie the things post offices sell as counter services - stamps, road tax etc are not included http://www.postoffice.co.uk/services-we-provide

It's probably best to wait until you've finished your 'pillaging' and add up the amount of credits you want verses what you have received and claim for the rest.
I'll probably only do around 40 - 50 this year in total. Last year I did waste quite a bit and to be honest, some purchases were only worth a little more than the cost with the £5 credited.

There are many that enrolled for Shop Small in the past, who haven't updated their status, that are still eligible. Not showing on the map, but the map is a let down at times. I'd prefer an up-to-date directory, rather than an out-of-date map (which includes merchants who don't or have never taken Amex , or even don't exist anymore).

That's my moans over for the day and it's not even 9.30 am yet. :smile:

once I did that test, I was happy that if an outlet was on LY's map it would still work fine, and so it has proven to be

there is a pub that was on the map 2 yrs ago but disappeared LY, so I might try that, risk is 3 pints of beers for a tenner so worth a test - I will bring along a tablet to see if I get the email then have 6, 9 or 12 :smiley:

I'd be very interested in knowing whether this is the case. There's a lot of 'small' restaurants in Soho that we love to visit and I'd buy up lots of gift vouchers however they're not on the map so haven't tried yet..

If the merchants have the Shop Small logo displayed, you should be OK. Even if you don't get credited at first, customer service will add the credit.
Some merchants that don't show on the map with a basic search, can sometimes be found by typing their name in. Sometimes this comes up and even though you may not get the email confirmation, you would eventually be credited.

I only looked for Oyster at the kiosk in Farringdon Post Office, and so can't answer if they have one4all gift cards. They have stationery, etc etc if you prefer not to use the facility for Oyster top up

I've found that Post Office Counters purchase of one4all gift cards triggers the Post Office Amex offer (spend £10 at Post Office for £5 statement credit.) if you received that offer and saved it

There's a shop called "Colas" on 144 High rd Tottenham N15 6JN ,they do oyster top ups but charge .70p extra per transaction.
Just ask for the .70p to be added in the £10 top up.

One merchant from Saturday didn't register the email notification and exactly the same as last year. I'm not too sure why it's listed on 'Shop Small' as it's part of a large pub chain (Sizzling Pubs). I got the credits manually added last year, so no concerns as they are listed on the map / directory.

Lots and lots of giftcards and restaurant vouchers. Vouchers for butchers, bakers and candlestick makers............................................................... well, not the bakers to be honest. :stuck_out_tongue:
Wine shop vouchers and any vouchers I can buy. Most last for 6 months, some a lot longer, so it gives time and hopefully half-price drinks in the warmer months.
Pub vouchers / cards are handy for Xmas presents too.

I'm trying not to waste too much this year, but succumbed on Saturday in a dear little deli!
Only really brought the prices down to 'normal' prices with the £5 back! Gave them a sale though.

I've had three and had three "we don't take amex", rather embarrassing really. I have complained but been told it is being passed onto MBNA. I do wish Amex would sort this better and get shop etc to put a sticker in their window saying they are taking part in the shop small scheme.

Just to add my experience here - there are some small restaurant chains included that do vouchers, also my local chain (no pun) of bike shops do. I dare say some small independent stores do their own too. There's always risk with giftcards of course, and you could argue more so with smaller shops - e.g. if they were to go bust.

As morgie has stated, many independent small and even medium sized retailer now offer vouchers (mainly) and giftcards. If you see a local restaurant / bar / butcher etc, etc listed on Shop Small, then worth asking. Contact them by Facebook, phone or direct etc. You may be surprised.

I've bought another four giftcards and vouchers today and have £150's worth for one group alone. I'm not too sure how they are listed to be honest, as their turnover is in £m's and they have many bars / restaurants and cafes. Not all are listed, but six are. Amazingly, one of their group today actually stated they didn't take Amex, but this is a newly re-opened pub, so a possible reason. I can spend the loaded giftcards there though.

In my neck of the woods, I can name many. Far too many to (ab)use to be honest. But, lots of independent Italian restaurants are an example. I prefer giftcards where you can load, rather than physical paper vouchers. But butchers are worth considering and I had no choice as my freezers are full!

I am on around 70 transactions mostly oyster, phone top ups, some gift cards, stamps and dry foods like a 10 kilo bag of rice. It can be easy to spend on what you wouldn't normally buy so I have tried to not do that. Did have to buy a fair bit of biltong though. Chemists are good for prescriptions. Dry cleaners for summer duvets that sort of thing.

Barbers/hairdressers are another good one to check for giftcards/vouchers.

I wanted to buy some compost.

Not well so I had to go to the local NHS walk in clinic to stock up on asthma inhalers cos I wasn't able to get an appt with doctor until the end of the week. Filled my prescription at the independent chemist attached to the clinic, and paid by Amex. Amazed to get the email saying I'd get the fiver back. I wasn't even thinking about Amex at the time. So might be worth stocking up on any regular medication and paying at a shop small chemist.

Apologies for not mentioning this earlier, but check out any Tastecard venues that can be combined with the Shop Small event.
Even if you buy vouchers now, to use in the future. Many Tastecard venues don't allow you to use the offers in December, so worth noting.

Did another 7 or 8 sales today and I'm just about finished. Over 50 now and more than I had planned to be honest and possibly 10 or so more to go before the weekend.

Done a few independent wine shops today and managed to get the shops to split the payments.
Drambuie - £20.99 over 2 spends = £10.99. Although cheap for Drambuie, Asda have it for £15, so not a massive saving.
Dow Master Blend Port - £9.99 and asked to be put through at £10 = £5. Sainsbury's have it for only £6.75, so again, only a small saving.
Tomatin Legacy malt whisky - £21.99 over 2 spends = £11.99. Tesco sometimes have this for £20 and I normally gave a coupon there (currently £4 off £20), but still a saving and the coupon can be used for something else I might waste it on food. :stuck_out_tongue:
3 x £10 butchers vouchers which will do later in the year.

So, not massive savings when comparing to offers and that's why I like Premier Stores offers and combining with Shop Small (one Stop was similar last year). But, at least the smaller shops have had over £500 from myself.

You can start using the app version straight away, and just wait for the card in the post. Then up to you what you use in the restaurant. Double check the restaurant you wish to use it at accepts it in December if you're spending now (rather than gift vouchers).

Went round a few in a posh part of town and walked out of most without buying anything prices were ridiculous and even with discount not worth it also hate it when there is no price on anything so just gave up on that.
Did buy a few pheasants at two for tenner I usually pay fiver for brace at the market but these were oven ready so time saving but same price so no saving as such.
Some fish shops to do at the weekend and couple more pubs maybe 2.50 pint is great.

I spent £13 at a cheese mongers that were on the map but the discount hasn't came up on the app. It was only on Sunday but everything else has tracked almost immediately.

I've got a few to do tomorrow, maybe a couple on Saturday and possibly lunch out on Sunday. I'm hoping for a Shop Small event in the summer, if only for one weekend. That would then give a chance to top up on giftcards and vouchers to use on the last six months of 2017.

Utterly exhausted after visiting 24 shops this afternoon, mostly successful but with the inevitable occasional crap of "We don't take Amex" and the adding of a charge sometimes

This is the first year where I haven't been charged a charge. To be fair, I've only ever been charged in a handful of shops and the most 50p. I have avoided those shops, as they were over-priced anyway. Maybe the reduced charges have helped as many are only paying around 1% now, maybe a tad more, but definitely under 2%.

Well to be a little fair to them, the retailers only charge when I'm topping up my Oyster ( travel card in London). I suspect they make precious little on this activity and may even make a loss when a credit card, esp'ly Amex is used.

When I rarely make purchases of goods, they don't impose a charge as presumably they're earning a living from the mark up.

You mention reduced charges for Amnex merchants, and I've heard this, too, from Amex. The trouble seems to be that the idea "Amex charges excessively" is now so ingrained into people's minds that it still remains true as far as they are concerned

Got about £50 worth of oyster top using upto 3 cards over 3 merchants.

Found a convience store to purchase bits and pieces of I.e toothpaste, hand wash etc

Popped into few pharmacy, prices are too high to even make any savings after cashback.

Spent around £1000 now (for £500 back) pretty much done. Loads of Oyster cards, lots of restaurant gift vouchers and plenty of cheap eats out :stuck_out_tongue:

It would also appear that amex are no longer giving £5 when you mention a shop that doesn't accept amex. Not sure whether that is due to me emailing so many times (all were genuinely non-acceptances) though....

I've got about a thousand , mostly on 11 Oyster cards ( will ask for a refund from tfl , making a gain of £500) and just a few purchases from shops for stock items needed over the year.

I've found it harder to keep track of purchases and credits this year as the contactless payments take time to appear on the statement, and as contactless payments don't come with a receipt (unless I remember to ask for one).

In previous years I have always received a £5 credit for shops not taking Amex, as well as the refund of charges.
This year, most customer operatives with Amex still do so, but sometimes I get a response from a certain operative (initials A S) which is not as satisfactory.

She'll say that she'll provide a response in 24-48 hours after the account has updated, but doesn't and so I have to message her again. She states wrongly that the maximum credit refund on any occasion (I provide a whole list of shops I've been to every time) is £25. She doesn't refund the charges imposed by retailers. She now asks for the uploading of receipts from shops where Amex was not accepted, which is of course ridiculous as I would not have made a purchase in that event.

Is she ( A S) the same difficult operative you're having issues with?

Did not have any luck today. Edwardes, a bike shop on Camberwell Rd, say they will match their prices (which are sky high) with internet prices on their website but when I went there they refused. I didn't even bother asking about amex. Then the other corner shops I went to didn't take amex.

Also which shops do gift cards? It's a bit awkward going into an artisan butchers, restaurant, salon and then asking for vouchers from M&S, one4all, Argos etc.

The giftcards I get from the independent merchants are their own, to use later with themselves.
Basically, you are buying their goods now, with £5 off, which you can cash in later in the year. The Shop Small event in theory, lasts longer than the 16 days.
I've also had more shops state they don't take, or have never taken Amex this year.
The Amex directory is a mess! I've had several £5 credits, even when I told Amex I don't want the credit! The one merchant I know won't track, I've asked for a manual add and have been advised it can take eight weeks for credits to appear! Once all my credits are in and only the three for this particular merchant are missing, I'll get everything squared up.
Speaking to Amex, I do think there is a chance of a Shop Small event (maybe a smaller event) during the summer.

I have been buying offers and stamps in Onestop this weekend - none are on the map but 2 out of the 3 I had instant emails when buying. On the other hand, other shops on the map closed down over a year ago or others say they don't accept AMEX, so the map is even more of a shambles this year than previous. A shame I only just discovered Onestop were still included - the offer ends later today.

Did five purchases over three different One Stop shops and received an email confirmation for all five. The reason for three different shops was to test each shop for the future and as they were fairly close together, it wasn't going out of my way too much.
Open until 11pm if that helps anyone, but check before you travel.
Eight in total today and that's it.

Did couple more oyster top and bits for the house today. Did not get any emails today nor yesterday.

Yes emails ever since the 'issue' on the first weekend, which seemed to be corrected late on the Monday afternoon.
Only an issue with one merchant since and I'll chase that up during the week, once everything else has been paid.

I had to use my debit card at few merchants where they refused my Amex. Could customer services help me in any way?

We had few shops that were on the map and we didn't get the statement credit for days now.
With MBNA statements you can't really tell which transaction was sucesfully redeemed.

Less than last year, but more than expected.
Almost half is tied up in giftcards/vouchers and my freezers are full.
Plenty of alcohol.
I'm expecting 62 confirmations and then I'll chase up the 'problematic three' once all the rest have come in.

I did promise to give a credit to charity if the One Shop confirms and I'll do that regardless.
Most of the merchants are repeats from last year, but I have added some new good ones.

If you got all the emails, I'd expect the credit to come eventually. If the credit still doesn't come then you could tell amex that you got x number of emails but y credits without the need for saying which was for which.

I got all the emails apart from 2 which I paid contactlessly. It seems you won't get an email for doing that but the credit should still come.

All my expected credits are now in, including the One Stop purchases.
That leaves a shortfall of just three (same merchant) and I'll chase those up in a few days time.

Fingers crossed for a summer Shop Small event, even if just for a single weekend.
In the meantime, work on updating the map / directory would be appreciated.

Some of my Onestops have arrived, though not all :confused:. I may give it a few more days before then contacting them.

Hopefully they'll manually add, even though they aren't listed on the directory.
I contacted Amex this morning and had my missing three credits added, just in time for the statement cut-off date.
Next time, I'll try a One Stop shop on day one..................if I'm not abroad!

As a number of Onestops have gone through automatically and none were on the map, there is evidence to support the assumption that Onestop were included if they want to argue. I am expecting they will just apply the credits though as they have been very helpful so far adding credits for shops on the map which didn't accept Amex (or closed down months ago!), so they have probably been told to be understanding if anyone queried missing credits

Someone in marketing will be having a serious talking to though - next time, include all small shops unless they opt out and produce a more accurate map!

If so which ones in London were they and did they add on a fee? Tx.
