wouldn't an android box and kodi be far better value for money?

23 Nov 16#5
the problem is that many of the cheap chinese boxes and smartphones have malware baked in .. if you are just wusing it for kodi/dodgy film etc servers etc and dont plan to input any personal data on the box (eg netflix login) then personally i think it s a better bet but if you want it for a proper media client with netflix amazon etc logins then i would go for a proper Western big brand box .. Me personally i would go for a Roku 3 as it has everything on it bar kodi/dodgy film servers or a fireTV if kodi is that important .. or if you are an isheep then the Apple TV is there for you

How much are these normally? Do most TVs have a insert for these sticks? I'm not very good with all this technology. Do you need to have Amazon prime to watch anything on it?
dabe1971 to Keeleyc
23 Nov 162#9
Usually £34.95 and they plug into the HDMI port so yeah, any flatscreen TV should be fine. Amazon Prime will get you the premium Amazon content but the other on demand services like BBC iPlayer, ITV Play, 4OD etc will be free.

You can always go and check if your store has stock and then avoid the charges? Maybe ring them before to check, saves a wasted journey. If it's around £35ish in store tell them it's only £24.95 online and they will price match their website.

Don't think the 2 year warranty is worth the extra £2 on this one, though if you have a JL near you, you might be able to buy it instore at the same price (or price match with Currys)

Are you happy with kodi performance on the fire stick? Would you recommend it? People say it's laggy and doesn't work well.

This is really old now, had mine 2 years and paid £19.99 for it then, Wi-Fi pretty poor also, wait for v2.

£19.99 was the introductory offer if I remember correctly. It has never been that cheap since. £24.99 is the cheapest offer price and was available last Black Friday.
And don't forget that none of those Chinese boxes will be able to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime video in HD as they have not been pre-approved. Granted these boxes pack serious processing power, 2GB+ of RAM etc and can easily handle 4K playback etc, but having to watch Netflix in SD was a major no no for me and I went and got myself an Amazon TV box. Infinitely less flexible, but I do get Netflix and Amazon Video in HD which makes a huge difference; sideloaded Kodi also appears to work fine..
