I'll clarify my statement :stuck_out_tongue:
For a Prime member - on Black Friday - you shouldn't be expected to pay more than it was merely a few weeks ago. And not just a little more, £20 more! Especially when I am already paying £79/year anyway as you so rightly point out.

Or, you know, Amazon should rightly have this deal voted cold as it is a poor price for what is meant to be a day of "fantastic" deals.

Love mine. Got a big echo in kitchen, have music on whilst cooking and does timers too, conversion etc, got a dot in lounge, main Bedroom and top of stairs, good to control lights, find out what events I have in calendar for that day, listen to news. Kids can listen to stories from audible (doesn't read Kindle books yet), my 4 year old loves asking it questions too. Bought a hive heating controller, and have several raspberry pi which I'll be connecting to my air con unit, robot vacuum, curtains and observatory for the full star trek experience.

I bought one on tuesday at full price and am trying to get amazon to give me the difference back. They are offering to "transfer me to the echo team to resolve my query" rather than just giving me the difference back. Can anybody advise?

I don't want to pay postage to send it back to them and buy another one.. Seems dumb that they'll not honour this difference.

The echo team will take 24-48 hours to respond.. i.e. after black friday

Buy a new one at this price and return the old one. Amazon are stupid sometimes and can't see the sense in a refund over two extra courier trips
kingchris

Amazon stopped this a while ago. They now force you to return and replace. They seem to offer a free return most of the time.

I guess they think making it harder will stop you bothering.
gcthompson

Yes, I expect that's the case. Doubt a return costs them very much. The proportion of returns due to a price reduction is probably very small compared to true returns and I imagine they will have favourable postal arrangements.

Voted for the Dot as has never been this price in the UK.
I couldn't resist with SONOS integration a few months away, fantastic price for a heck of a lot of technology.
Already works with Nest and Wemo, was holding out for Google Home but could be waiting a while plus reviews for the 'Google Home' are not as good as expected.
I've tried my best to justify the purchase!

Shame really. I was hoping that they would have reduced it back to £99. Like they did on launch. I'm sure there still would have been enough margin to line their greedy pockets. I would have taken the plunge. So for that reason I'm out.

BubaMan
25 Nov 16 1 #34

Amazon fraudulently (can't think of another way to say it) signed me up for Prime on a different email account the their week. I received an email about it and then cancelled it straight away for a full refund. Then just yesterday I got another remain saying as I recently subscribed to prime at full price (cant remember if it was before or after the price drop) they sent me a £20 voucher.

So actually better off by £20 and they had previously given me £7 for the grief of setting up an account for me anyway.

What Sonos/Dot beta?
fireman1
25 Nov 16 1 #44
I think you miss the point. Black Friday is promoted as a day of amazing or unbeatable prices. This product was cheaper only a few weeks ago at the same shop. The very shop that makes them, and the very shop that introduced black Friday to the UK.
They are either merely price matching other stores on there own product or price controlling at the other shops. I would assume the latter as it can't be coincidence that all shops leaked the exact same price.

I got signed up after chatting to someone On a support forum. Anyone can join the software beta from their app but I believe the hardware beta testing is by invite only. Got to test the Play 5 V2 too which was cool. Not sure if having 14 speakers helped or not.

Not quite true. I called this morning. Had the whole "speak to echo team". Spoke to Echo team and got it sorted as I was a "valued customer".

"We don't price match but will assist on this exception..."

Otherwise just return it and buy one for JL.

To be fair, isn't this your fault for not waiting until Black Friday? Amazon always reduce their own branded items on major sale days.
The_Goon
25 Nov 16 #50
We returned our Echo. It was a fun novelty but that's it. Biggest gripes were that the speaker is fairly mediocre and functionality/usability was fairly limited. Having to install "skills" and trigger them correctly is a pain frankly - having to remember to ask the National Rail app to tell me about my trains rather than just asking the question really dampened the experience for me. Also if I remember correctly it couldn't alter colours on Hue lights (a minor point but a lack of functionality nonetheless). Further, it struggled with simple queries that other personal assistant apps could handle easily. Lastly, I had read that a new version is on the cards in the near future so all in, it wasn't worth it. Just my experience though.

I've got six of them. Love them. Excellent bits of kit.
jouster
25 Nov 16 #55
X. From this post it sounds like you are exactly their target audience so I'm a little confused.

I would say a lot of this voice activated tech is quite new to the mass market so it's ALWAYS going to take some tinkering, I appreciate that's not for everyone, but that's just tech nowadays. Like you say, recipes need setting up and if you want to get the most from anything a certain amount of testing and playing about is required nowadays.

When Sonos integration comes in next year it will be fantastic for me.

I have WeMo plugs, nest heating, hue lights and harmony remote, all of which can be controlled but I KNOW there will be some messing about required.

Yep, they've pulled the 6 & 12 pack promos now. They appeared to be live this morning when I got in to work as we were hoping to do a bulk-purchase for a dozen.

I purchased the echo dot but I didn't realise that the 3.5mm jack disables the internal speaker. Since I won't be having my speaker (a bose soundock) on all the time this kind of defeats the purpose of going for the dot.... disappointing and I guess I'll be sending it back without opening it.

Disappointing it does not have google music integration. http://products.bose.com/pdf/customer_service/owners/og_sounddock_portable.pdf
As it says "When running on battery power, the SoundDock Portable system becomes inactive when your iPod is off or silent for 10 minutes." I assume that includes Dot 3.5 input as well

Folks wouldn't want the Dot speaker to work when attached to Bose etc as it would cause confusion - double mono etc thats why Dots speaker switches off.

[well Amazon managed to let me down today. Was due to have two Dots delivered but had an email
mid afternoon saying that due an unforeseen error my Dots won't be with me for between 24-48 hours.

Not happy at all. Have them a call to complain and as usual Amazon came up with the goods for me. Ordered me two more that will be here tomorrow and then proceeded to give me a full refund on the 2 Dots so I actually got them for free.

knack
26 Nov 16 1 #88
Just had a look and it seems that this was enabled when the Dot was released. Prior to that it was reordering only. It's prime items only and, as you suggest, requires 1 click settings. Another bonus is that items ordered via Alexa are eligible for free returns.
deany76
27 Nov 16 #89
Managed to get Alexa to work with Nest, I find it very good.
I had to go through the normal setup in Alexa and created a group called Nest, with a tick on the Nest.
This now works:

Alexa turn/set Nest to x degrees"

Also Wemo switches work great:

"Alexa turn Dining Room light off"
"Alexa turn Bedroom Room light off"

I'm made up with my Dot, have ordered another at this price.
Also have set one up in the Office we are a weather dependent company so think

weather tomorrow etc
• alarms / timers to ring customers etc

will help make the day easier for Office staff - like a PA for under £40.00

Picked up an echo today. Rather disappointingly amazon prime music doesn't integrate that well with the alexa app.

I was expecting to be able to browse the prime music app and send it to the echo.

Instead I can either try to get it by voice (which doesn't always work.. it can't seem to find Sgt Peppers album by the Beatles even though it is on prime music) or there are limited browsing options in the alexa app but those are stuck to play lists primarily.

As I said in my other post I won't know the name of artists or play lists to choose by voice so this is a disappointment for me.

Hi Chris
I was only thinking yesterday how helpful The Dot / Echo would be to someone who was visually impaired.
Once setup there is nothing else required and the benefits are frankly endless, all I would say it budget for two say bedroom and main living room area.
In the next post I will copy and paste a list of helpful questions, integration with Nest and Wemo is fantastic (for underblank in bedroom - for warm bed).
"Alexa turn Nest to x degrees"
"Alexa turn Nest UP x degrees"
"Alexa turn Nest DOWN x degrees"
"Alexa turn Dining Room light ON/OFF"
"Alexa turn Bedroom Room light ON/OFF*"
