What more need I say? This is the cheapest I've seen one of these in a long time. £2400 initial payment and £87pm. Increasing mileage barely adds much cost. Out of interest I priced one up direct on a 2 year PCP from Audi with the same deposit and it would be £251pm. And before someone says, "but you don't own it at the end of a lease" you don't own it at the end of a PCP either unless you're paying a big lump sum.

I don't know mate I've got a Golf R so don't have to worry about that.

To the previous post. £87.05 x 23 months = £2002.15 + £2400 initial rental = £4402.15 + £239.99 admin = £4642.14. Have I missed something?

Not a big fan of these small engine cars. Can't be good for fuel economy since you'll be sitting on boost for most of the power

Test situation vs real life driving. Back in the real world you'll be pushing this car hard a lot of the time just to get it moving. The 1.4TSI COD 150ps is more economical than this engine in the real world (but will cost more). You'll likely see a realistic 45mpg in this 1.0 car vs 50mpg in the 1.4 COD.

The wife has a 1.6TDI (116PS) Audi A1 and it is only 2mpg more economical than a 2.0TDI 150ps Audi A3 when driven the same way (in the real world), despite lugging almost an extra 180kg and having 29% more power.

Just seen some total wally in one of these at my local leisure centre car park. have any of the critics of this engine actually driven an A3 with this engine?

I had one as a courtesy car a short while ago. I've a fairly economical method of driving - I accelerate quite hard to get up to my required speed, but do maintain my momentum when i'm there - I have a low brake pad/disk wear rate on my cars. In my Golf R I average 33mpg on my 20 mile commute, My old Golf GTD (184ps) averaged 54mpg on the same journey, the wife's A1 1.6TDI averages 58mpg on the journey (smaller, lighter car with 42% less power and only 7% more efficient. The A3 courtesy car managed 46mpg on the same commute. These little engined cars are nowhere near as efficient in the real world as they are wound up in most real life driving situations.

it's a cracking deal, I've just taken delivery of the sport 1.6tdi version and the new interior and toys are very nice. Feels like I'm driving a go kart compared to the old A4 Avant barge I had before. No bow thrusters needed on the A3. I put 1500 down and pay 247 a month over 3 years (12k miles per year). would have gone for this but need the economy of the diesel

This looks good to me. Hot.

Have enquired as I am a high mileage user - c. 12-13k per annum. Want to see if it's cheaper to go 5k miles + fee or get 13k miles which should cover me over the 2 years...
SulZero
30 Nov 16 1 #22
Excess mileage is 4.78p per excess mile. I might just order this, the 1.0l engine is only thing putting me off..
Speedbirdjw
30 Nov 16 #23
It's certainly cheaper to order with the mileage you need. I'd suggest ordering 10k and then during the contract contact VW finance for a mileage adjustment. I did this with my golf and the rate was less than half the excess mileage

30 Nov 16 #28
good deal but not quite what I'm looking for - deserves more heat!
Chrisrules334
30 Nov 16 #29
Why is this not hot...? For 12k miles a year, I have been quoted:

£2400 initial + £87.05 x23pm + £240 admin fee + 4.78p per mile = £5,311 or £221p/m

So I pay 27% of the value to own the car for 2 years. Not bad.

My only issue is maintenance/tyres/servicing. They say I need to follow their schedule... And the cost of having to take it to a main dealer is far too much for me. I can get my car serviced by a mate for £50 or so... so paying out £400, twice in a 2 year period probably breaks leasing for me.

Oh well. Time to save!
monkeyhanger75 to Chrisrules334
1 Dec 16 1 #31
£400 a service? No chance. More like around £130 for the first service (oil/filter change) and £200 for the second (major) service. My Golf R doesn't cost much more than that to service.
m5rcc to Chrisrules334
1 Dec 16 2 #36
Although it's usually cheaper to get a less mileage and pay the excess, at 4.78p/excess mile, it isn't:

https://s15.postimg.org/kofjv3h6z/Capture.jpg

So if you need 12k/yr, then get the 10k deal + excess = £4,978.86 + £191.20 = £5,170.06 or £215.42/net/month
monkeyhanger75
1 Dec 16 #32
Fuel economy is related to how you have to drive these things. It'll be about 60ps output when off boost, so you really do have to work these small units when not in first or second gear, that's not a lot of power for a car the size of an A3.

It's not a VAG thing though, the Ford 1.0 125ps Ecoboost unit is just the same - you need to work them and when you do they are relatively thirsty. These small engined high output cars are economical on the test cycle, but in real life it'll be pumping out as much CO2 per mile as a 1.4 that doesn't have to be driven as hard to do the same.

I was also answering the question of whether I have actually driven one - yes I have.
Chrisrules334
1 Dec 16 #33
Is that with an Audi dealership? As that's where it has to go to...
Speedbirdjw
1 Dec 16 1 #34
Try going back and selecting 10K to begin with. This brings it to £101.69pm with the same initial. That'll save you a couple of hundred pounds over the lease. It's better taking the contract with the mileage you need as the mileage is cheaper than paying the excess mileage. I changed the mileage on my golf r and paid less than half the excess mileage. Around 3p instead of 10p. Maybe just give NVS a call and ask for a quote with 12000. I think it would bring it down to around £5000-5100
monkeyhanger75
1 Dec 16 #35
Audi prices are competitve with VW prices as all the serviceable parts are the same with similar labour costs, even cheaper if you get a service pack (not sure whether the lease company can get this for you as a stated optional extra). £400 for a single oil change service is pushing towards Porsche prices.
Chrisrules334
1 Dec 16 #37
Cheers - the excess mileage charge does shoot up when you include maintenance which is a pain... it's also nigh on impossible to find the cost of servicing from Audi!

Question, how much do you earn if you are okay with paying £2500 a year for a rental?
donovandw
2 Dec 16 #42
People are so ignorant as to why it makes sense sometimes to lease. The cost to "rent" this car works out cheaper than buying it and losing depreciation so it's a no brainer if in the market for a "Brand New Warranted Car" (don't compare apples with lemon I.e new vs used)
FocusST
2 Dec 16 #43
Probably the same as anyone that buys a car for £12,500 and after a year it's worth £10,000!!

I know this is a lease deal, but I have a PCP deal, they are great, it costs way more than £2500 a year but still makes sense against depreciation, buying a used car etc etc. After 4 years if I want the car it will cost me £15k to buy it and overall will still be good value due to the discounts I got on it.

2 Dec 16 #47
It's not about how much you earn, it's how much you'd end up paying through other routes.

If you take the purchase price of a car (old or new, doesn't matter), and then minus the sale price of the card however many years later, add on whatever you've spent on an extended warranty / fixing items out of warranty / replacing items not covered by the warranty; and then divide by the number of months you owned it (giving depreciation + costs). Ignore the routine servicing you'd be paying for anyway, and you'd be hard pushed to get under £200/mo.

I don't lease because I live in London and other people seem quite happy to park stupidly and dent your car, so I don't want the worry of getting every small scratch etc. fixed. But the cost of me purchasing & maintaining my car over 6 years, is about equal to me having 3x 2 year leases on brand new cars!
onlineo
2 Dec 16 #48
leases tend to be the cheapest way to own a new car. If you are happy buying a £2-4k car and driving it for a few years with repairs you can get much cheaper motoring. I had an Alfa 147 for 6 years, it had 90000 miles and 3 years old when I bought it so got it for £3750. 6 years running costs including repairs, mot and services added another £1500. (it was a diesel so good economy and they engine lasts a long time). Resold for £750. Total cost for 6 years was £4500 which is less than this lease for 2 years. my wife had a corsa for 8 years with a total ownership cost of around the same after she resold it for £1250. BUT. .. We now own a second hand golf which we paid £6k for 18 months ago. It constantly needs repairs and is worth £4k now. We also have a Yeti on lease, total cost of lease is £3k for 2 years. It is a way better car than any of our second hand cars and 2 years in it is cheaper than 2 years in our second hand golf which is awful to drive. I think we will lease from now on.

Well, I had a perfectly good 05 fiesta for 4 years. Paid £1500 to buy it , spent a further ±£600 on road tax, £120 on MOT and another £100ish on small repairs and I sold it for £600. I've done 40k miles in those 4 years. That breaks me down to around £35 per month as a cost. Sure, a Fiesta is not an Audi, but I care less about that.

Well no one has the right not to be offended but as others have suggested, if a lease deal is close to or beats depreciation and you want a new car that offers peace of mind in terms of no MOTs and just one interim service (as in this case), then it is a no brainer.

If an asset depreciates, lease it. If it appreciates, buy it.

If people spunk money on fags, booze, Sky and iPhone, yet cry about not being able to afford something else, whose fault is that?

I have a Golf R and bought it outright new in May 2015 - I wish i'd leased and left the money in the bank TBH. just after ordering it VW started giving them away on lease terms and were delivering them to leasers quite quickly, I had to wait 8.5 months for mine. Great car though.
Speedbirdjw to monkeyhanger75
3 Dec 16 #84
No I paid £1785 initial rental, I added Lapiz blue and opted for 10k miles and that brought my 23 monthly rentals to £219. I can keep it on an informal extension for three months still paying £219 and then if I order another car in the group I can keep it until the new car arrives but still pay £219pm for possible up to 30 months so average all in will be about £270 over that period. Best deal I found for the exact car to purchase was discounted down to £27300 and with a £2k deposit on a 48 month PCP at 5.3% had a monthly repayment of £353 and final purchase of just under £13k. I'd still have to pay road tax for it in that time. If I sold it after 2 years to get a new one I think I'd struggle to get much over £20000 so either way I'd be losing 7-8k after depreciation and interest. So in my eyes was probably cheaper to lease knowing the exact costs too. Would order another now if they'd been released...
monkeyhanger75 to monkeyhanger75

There are a few risks leasing:-
1. Being without a car between deals on a car you actually want - not everywhere will allow you to extend, and the best deals don't come around too often.
2. Big upfront deposit lost forever if the car is written off or stolen early on in the lease term (lots of Rs stolen by gangs via burglary for the keys from Birmingham/Coventry/Dudley area).

Never seen a deal as good as those early R deals before, and they're not as good now. The main reason for that was VW's ridiculously high GFV - coming in at 61% of RRP after 3 years and 30k miles, that soon got corrected down to 52% of RRP. Those deals are gone now - you're looking at upwards of £350pm average (all term costs considered).

Prior to those lease deals, the MK5 R32 and MK6 R were niche models sold in low numbers, and they based GFVs for the MK7 on what "rare as hens teeth" MK6 Rs were going for in the aftermarket, making the lease companies willing to pick them up for cheap lease deals, and being given the allocation to do so.

VW's little leasing experiment did plenty of harm to the GTI brand - who'd PCP a GTI for £100 a month more than the R could be leased for? Not sure they'll be in a hurry to let that happen again, i'm sure GFVs will be more reasonable in the future, making cars like this a significantly dearer lease option.

3 Dec 16 #83
Is that £200pm inclusive of the deposit? Seriously doubt it, these were coming in at about £270pm average for the term on the cheapest 5k miles PA deal for a bare bones white R.

You can usually tell a lease R a mile off - they come on the fugly standard Cadiz wheels (The Prets look so much better) and in white (free) or red (cheapest paid for paint). Adding options to a lease is expensive when you are paying for the whole list price of the options over 24 months - add Prets and metallic paint to a lease and it is about £75pm more, starting to look not so cheap at that point, add a few other options and your excess mileage to get a realistic 10k miles PA and leasing starts to look expensive.

I got mine at £4500 off list and a cracking p/x on my outgoing MK7 GTD (before dieselgate hit). I'm expecting to lose £11k over 3 years on it - you won't lose £10k in 2 years unless you negotiated no discount in the purchase.

If you buy outright, you can beat the lease terms and offload on your own terms, but if PCPing, leasing is usually noticeably cheaper, unless you like a lot of options. Right now I put away £300 a month to cover the depreciation so I have all my money back for the next one, between what the car is worth and what i've put back in the bank.
Speedbirdjw
3 Dec 16 1 #86
