You don't need 4k for most content. Even Blu-ray - the highest quality standard is mostly 1080p.
Only a few 4k titles out, only of them only a few real 4k - rest is upscaled.

I have an old LG lcd 1080p tv from about 6 years ago still works perfectly back then it only cost about £350. Would there be much advantage in buying this mainly for video games. Would the picture and higher refresh be a big change? would have rather 3 or 4 hdmi slots but could make do with 2.

yes. l had one of these and the xpro reality engine is sublime, by far a better picture and the lag is about 30ms, so not noticeable and easily playable. hope this helps!

I currentley have a Samsung 4K in my front room. I am tempted to move that to my games room and buy this for the front room. Question is will I notice a difference when watching TV? My understanding is the 4K tv is wasted on watching normal TV as it is not yet filmed in 4K? Or should I save up and buy a second 4K set?

I don't have a 4K TV but the but most people's opinions I have seen recently indicate that you will notice no difference; in fact the non-4k TV may actually display the SD / HD feeds better than the 4k TV does.

Make sure you turn off the "ambient sensor" unless you want the TV going light-dark constantly. It will drive you crazy. Look up settings advice online and you will eventually get a stunning picture. 4K is a red herring at the moment so dont worry that it doesn't have it. The Hisense tv's mentioned are not in the same league as the Sony's. Look up the reviews. Great price and great find. Cheap as chips for a decent 48 inch smart tv and a 5 year warranty to boot.

Some people still bang on about how good Sony is, Lg, Samsung took over Sony years ago. They have a lot of warranty claims, so this price is average for a Sony TV. I used to the same about Sony until I returned 2 faulty sets.

What's an AVR and why does sound come into the amount of devices connected via HDMI
MrPuddington
4 Nov 16#53
Get a NowTV box for 15 pounds, and that would provide most of it. Although I think the only platforms that have all catch-up channels are Samsung and Freeview.
The main point of buying a AVR (audio visual receiver) is to ditch the crappy tv speakers and have cinema quality surround sound. The other reason is to power all your HDMI devices through the AVR so that only 1 HDMI needs to into the TV.
Id rather the Sony has 1 HDMI personally. The more HDMI ports the thicker the tv would probably be due to needing a larger mainboard inside it.

I think you will notice the difference, I've had a 1st release Samsung 55" F9000 4K, and the HD picture quality is fantastic and has a lot of picture depth especially on scenery. The SD picture is also excellent but I'm afraid that streamed, Firestick and Chromecast pictures are rubbish, much poorer quality than SD. I bought it because of the great HD picture not for 4K and have not viewed any 4K content yet. The only noticeable flaw is that on camera changes on football for a brief second you sometimes get a small picture lag.

Just bought it as an upgrade to a similar Sony 40" which has been superb.
4K is a complete con, especially in budget price range. I'm still watching plenty of SD channels which upscale horribly on a 4K TV.
Good old 1080p LED is perfectly adequate as the human eye can't differentiate when sitting more than 6' away for a 48" screen.

(I'm not bothered about 4K) I've had my current Samsung 40" for about five years and whilst this is a pretty good deal especially with the 5 year warranty I was hoping to get a slightly larger screen. They were when first launched, but because of the nature of Android, those glitches were worked on, updates released and they're now excellent. I have a 2015 43X83, a 2015 55X85 and a 2016 65XD93; all work brilliantly, despite the 2015 models having glitches prior to updates.

5 Nov 16#85
Have you considered an Android model? All Sony's Android TVs have 4 HDMI ports, but because Android's built in you'd be able to get rid of Chromecast and could install something like Kodi to stream stuff, meaning you'd probably be able to get rid of your Fire Stick, too.

Have you ever seen a 4k TV? 1080p is already finished. If you like buying old rubbish with a big brand name with Sony or Samsung, no one can help you. I will never go back to 1080p and love my 4k even though it is no big brand TV and was cheaper than this TV.

How do you get 1080 is dead? How many TV companies are delivering 4K? That's what the general public want, only the film fanatics and gaming buffoons want 4K and that's to keep up or better the next film viewer or gamer. The general public is what sells most TV's and judging from what I see and hear picture quality is the least of their worries. Just look at how many are using streaming devices and the poor quality picture you get from them, but a large proportion seem perfectly happy, because you are not giving Murdoch extortion amounts of cash per week.

So glad I never jumped at this. Too many 'average reports' and poor sound reviews.
No doubt it is good for the money...bit remember at full RRP price this set was sub £500 and so maybe we shouldn't have too much expectation. For an average tv set at a good price it's a good deal. But I think anyone wanting a 'good' tv, it's probably unrealistic to expect this to be a 'great' tv.
