Looking for a power bank to replace last one that broke, and came across this. Includes free shipping (from USA) seems to be a good site and good product. This is for silver one. Gold/red are around £1 more. 6.3% TCB/6% quidco too.

Unfortunately I have had a really bad experience with their customer service.
I ordered one of these on the 17th Sept, they dispatched it next day and I have still not received it on the 25th October.
It took me 4 emails and two web chats to get anywhere with them.
Today I was on a web chat with them for over an hour trying to explain that it was 27 working days since dispatch so I was not willing to wait any longer for it to arrive.
They tried to make me wait for another week but finally I got them to count the days and realise they were over the stated 20 by some margin.
They asked if I wanted a refund or a resend - I asked for a resend but with free priority mail which currently costs £2.27 - but they would not do it.

After much discussion they finally offered the air mail option which is only 19 pence cheaper than priority mail!!!!!!!!

From what I can gather if you have no problems with getting the items they have on offer its good quality but if you have to deal with their customer service department good luck is all I can say.

I paid about £15 a year ago. This was one of the most highly rated chargers for the iPhone 6 Plus. I have to say, it charges fast, doesn't overcharge, and has been more reliable than Mourinho learning to keep his gob shut at Man U. Amazing piece of kit for around a tenner !!

excellent piece of kit I have this and the larger anker one both are good the xiaomi one is far more compact half the size yet not half the charge ability and the xiaimi came with a short grey lead which is handy.I have xiaomi speaker power bank and headphones and all products are high quality are used regular. The xiaomi power bank charges my idol 3 4.7 three times which is about right and takes about six hours to fully charge up again if I needed another powerbank if be buying this one Ive had it approaching two years now

True, although you can sometimes be pleasantly surprised - a lot of the eBay sellers are keen to maintain their ratings to the extent of sending out replacements for faulty goods without arguing.

The Note 7 was imported wholesale and presumably passed all required safety and regulatory checks beforehand. Didn't stop their moonlighting as incendiary devices, though. I don't think the risk of fire is lessened all that much by buying locally as lithium ion is pretty volatile anyway.
As ever, only buy from China what you can afford to lose as what you save in purchasing is deducted from your statutory rights.
MrPuddington
15 Oct 16 #123
Personally, I would not buy a battery bank as an import. The Note 7 fiasco should be a warning: these things can and do catch fire, especially if they are badly engineered. Yes, Xiaomi is a decent brand in China, but the risk is still with the importer: you.

Anker stuff is ok, I have a few things. Powerbank, iPhone cables and adapters. The powerbank isn't as good as my Xiaomi, the cables stop working after a few months, as has the power adapter.

Anker have great marketing and product packaging though, I'll give them that. Makes you think you're getting a really high quality product.

Xiaomi walks the walk though. That's the difference.

Multiple reports of it stopping working after 3-4 months, poor build quality, bad customer service, melting charging cables (!)

I've had no such issues with the Xiaomi

Another person under the false impression that Xiaomi are some cheap Chinese tat. They are not. They are just as reputable as Anker. And having owned both Anker and Xiaomi products (which I am pretty certain you have not) the build quality on the Xiaomi exceeds that on the Anker.

Short version - you are making comments with no specific knowledge of the product on offer.
pibpob
14 Oct 16 #115
It looks like you've never handled one of these though if "build quality" equates to "how it feels in the hand". It is very solid, with a thick aluminium shell. No rattles, no flex.
I agree that for these particular products, the Anker performs much better.

Try holding one, the Anker is particularly good quality although the ravpower is a close second.I bought many a cheapo chinese charger before realising that buying high end brands like anker and ravpower even if they had a lower number on the box was a much better idea

see this for example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRMJ3ob01Tc

Its not just about the battery inside either its the power management. Also notice the Xiaomi cant maintain 5v and only maintains its 2.1A output by pulling down the voltage.

Just try buying a modern battery from a quality manufacturer like Anker or Ravpower and you will see what I mean.
avalon50
13 Oct 16 #111
I have had one of these for over a year now and take it with me if we go away. It does what it says and can charge my phone up 4 or maybe 5 times. that is good enough for me
pibpob
13 Oct 16 #110
Yes, it's quite clear about the effective capacity, and that is a credit to the manufacturer that they acknowledge and quantify this. Are the figures you give for the ones you've linked to also effective capacity, or are they the theoretical capacity of the cells within?

The Xiaomi does have a "smart" output which tries different parameters in order to get the connected device to draw as much current as possible. Is it inferior to the ones you cite?

And I'd still like to know how exactly the "build quality" of this is any better than those.
jamesdew
13 Oct 16 #109
It's quite clear from reading the details that the actual capacity is 6250 mAh, it says thats the minimum further down the page but also reference getting 2.1 charges into a 3000 mAh device. Also I didn't mean it would receive charge faster (although it probably will) I meant both the Anker and Ravpower will charge phones faster because they both support modern charging standards.

I don't see any point buying these cheap chargers. The ones from reputable companies who obey charging specifications and state the actual capacity of their chargers are barely any more expensive.

Because it's only 2/3 of the capacity?

They are about £1 more expensive.

The good thing about short cables is that they have less loss than equivalent longer ones, and with the price of copper the way it is, manufacturers are skimping on it.

I got this from Gearbest for about 8 quid a while back - it's been excellent for charging tablets, although it can take a while to recharge if you've exhausted it. It was so cheap that I even bought the official black neoprene "condom case" for it as well.

It does come with a very short white USB charging lead which in theory sounds handy, but a longer cable would have been better so you can use the device you're charging whilst keeping the power bank on a seat or table. It doesn't matter too much because you can use any old standard microUSB cable you've got hanging around anyway.

I bought one the last time this came round. I am happy with, great travel companion. you don't get the true 10000mAh in terms of charging, I think the website states it's around 6000mAh as a true figure. This still gives (depending on phone) 2-3 full charges. Can't complain really for just over £10. Delivery wasn't the quickest but it did come before it said it would.

I had one of these , they are great and perform amazingly well however they are very heavy and you have to get the rubber case to stop it scratching or breaking your phone. I felt it presented a real danger to my phone if charging while out and about , rattling about in my bag. The rubber Impact case only just covered the shoulders of the battery charger and I felt it could be pulled down and press the hard aluminium corner into the screen of my phone . Also it weighed a ton , I recommend going for the two cell varieties if you're planning to carry with you . But in terms of battery charging build quality it was absolutely faultless , very well-made

Xiaomi rate this bank as 6250mah useful output total. You should definitely get that and maybe a tad more in ideal conditions. (~65 percent efficiency which is very good), because all banks lose energy in the transfer, heat losses etc.

Simply find out how much your device battery holds and divide it into 6250. So if your phone has a 2000mah battery then you should get at least 3 full charges from flat.

My expectations are low so I'm not worried about being disappointed. I'm not concerned about it being portable either - I'd like to have one that I can just leave outside or by a window that could charge a battery by day which I could then use to charge a phone at night (or every other night, however it worked out) just to get a bit of green energy. If it's small enough to be portable (as in put in the car and take on camping trips, as opposed to pocket size) then even better. I've seen some in Halfords and among camping accessories in other places, just didn't look at them closely enough to see how much power they could generate.

I have one of these. They are very good, have a very high efficiency unlike some cheap ones and certainly meet the claimed ratings. They have a solid metal case so the build quality feels impressive and a microprocessor from Texas instruments controlling the output for intelligent charging and cut off.

In short, it's a quality product and Xiaomi are a big company.

Spot on.
I would never buy any battery product that isn't from a clearly reputable brand.

I was trying to source a similar product to this wholesale from a manufacturer in China. I declined this companies offer as they'd offered a 5,000 mAh battery, but most competition is selling an 8,000 mAh battery for a similar price. This was their response.

http://i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx134/Pete1993/IMG_3027_zpsensdx3w2.png

Unfortunately this 'tradition' makes it near impossible to enter this market unless you're willing to join the club and also lie about the capacity of the batteries you're selling.

Can anyone recommend a decent solar panel charger to go with this? I had a battery pack with a built in solar panel but it was absolutely rubbish, not charging from the panel and not even holding a charge from the mains for very long. So it would be great to get a reliable high capacity battery pack such as this and pair it with a separate solar panel. I've seen them around, just don't know what to look for.
pibpob to reddragon105

Lots of things to think about here and you may be disappointed. What size of panel are you willing to carry around? Are you expecting it to produce any significant current when the sun is not out, or will you be around to point it directly at the sun when it is? How long are you expecting it to take to charge?

Cold, due to price. It's always been this price, a deal is when these are sub £20.

Just because this is the cheapest price today doesn't make it a hot deal.

In regard to the product I got a 1st gen one and the 2nd gen one of these. Both are great products, this is the 2nd or newer gen btw. 1st was 10400mah battery, slight reduction but size and efficiency are better.

Yes you're right. I got it for £7.30 last year I think but such a well made bit of kit it's worth £11 if you can't get it cheap. I imagine returns are a bit of a nuisance though in the event of an issue?

Personally I think Vinsics 20aH battery is the best power bank of the lot but I've heard these are decent. Hot from me!

This looks a lot like one I saw on a LinusTechTips video that compared Power Banks. If it is, then it scored highly.

I ordered one last time there was a deal, around the 18th September and am still waiting for it to arrive so just bear in mind that it takes a while to arrive.

I have the 20000mAh Xiaomi and it's brilliant. Really good build quality and works perfectly.

The model does state that due to energy lost via heat and other sources you only recieve around 6500mAH. Which is enough to charge ( to full) my galaxy s6 2 times. And my partners Iphone 6(w/e) 3 times.
