Anybody know if this is a compressor or desiccant type?

I was having the same questions last Christmas when I decide which one to buy.

compressor: larger, heavier, only works well in warm weather, more energy efficient, tend to last longer from reading reviews.

desiccant: smaller, light weight, can be moved around easily, works in all temperture, use more electricity, generate some heat as an additional effect (this may be good for the winter). Some reviewers say they can smell odour.


I live in a house with two floors. I only plan to buy 1. So being moveable is required. And I only tend to use in the winter when I can feel wet. In other seasons, I feel fine in my house. My house does not have dump and mould problem.

At the end, I bought EcoAir DD122FW-MK5. My wife can move it downstair or upstair easily. And I cannot smell any odour (odour was a big concern to me before my purchase).

In last winter, it extract 1 tank (2L) during the day, and 1 tank (2L) during the night.


So I am very happy with it.


Which type suit you more depend on your circumstances.


Last year Black Friday and Christmas, there were many good deals on dehumidifier, headphones on amazon. I suggest you wait until then.

£132 is a very good price for this model.

The 20L is even more highly recommended, but of course more expensive.

It is a Compressor type which is why it is energy efficient.

Does it make a room warm even when it is a compressor type?

Meaco

Low Energy Dehumidifier, 12 Litre from Amazon.

Very efficient to run and has so many benefits. Even slightly warms up the room in the winter.

So what happens when the tank is full on these? Does it just wait until you get home from work. You then empty it and it continues?

I brought a meaco dehumidifier, the cheap to run one.. 12 litre model in February. It is one of the best things I've ever brought. It has got rid and kept away mold, has got rid of the dampness in my new flat, sorted out a cupboard that smelt when I moved in and as a bonus it dries my clothes. Super stuff.

Not bad. If you have an Aldi nearby I recommend their dehumidifier for under £100 with a 3 year warranty. I live in Cornwall where damp is unavoidable however their machine is powerful and really well built, much better than the Ebac ones I have previously.

Bought the Aldi one two weeks ago, apparently rated for 20L versus the 16L for this, but presume temperature and humidity would play the difference. EDIT have noticed there is also a 20L Vax one for £230.

FYI its quite good, louder than a fan heater but not horrific, you couldn't sleep with it in the room. Run it at maximum fan speed (17 degrees room temp.) and it does kick into defrost mode every now and then but this is not a problem at lower speeds. This is not a problem over 19-20 degrees

It is worth pointing out that this VAX unit like the Aldi has the irritating changing colour light on the front which is red 70% plus, green 60-70% or blue sub 60% humidity which is just a pointless gimmick when there's an illuminated display on the top.

Also if you connect it to a hard timer switch (not the units timer), it does seem to automatically power back up as per the switch as it seems to remember what mode it was in when the power was cut off.

I know there will be a lot of debate about a compressor or a desiccant type, but the three year warranty swung it for me, I've read to many reviews on Amazon and JL about desiccants failing shortly after the warranty is up.

Think the dessicant ones make it feel a touch warmer

Nope just dryer, no condensation on the windows in the morning.... Plus the house seems to smell fresher.

The ones which work much better as dessicant. These need heating/high temperature to work properly.

I bought one from Aldi about 18 months ago and it works really well. Looks similar, but not identical to the one they are currently selling on their website, and free home delivery too. It does work in temperatures below 16c, I think the confusion is that it will draw more moisture from warmer air than cold air as it mentions using in a cellar, which many are not above 16c. From their website (quote) ''This highly efficient, compact and portable dehumidifier is great for tackling unwanted mould and damp in houses, flats and cellars. Use it at the first sign of damp or mould, such as water stains on walls or ceiling, condensation appearing regularly on certain windows, black spots of mould in your bathroom or shower and rooms that smell musty or damp.

I bloody hate mold and damp. wish all the old houses could get wall insulation done by drill, but no they ended up creating a very expensive external wall insulation costing me £15k plus council funding on top !

The compressor ones only work above about 16 degrees whereas the desiccant ones don't need a warm is here room and give off a bit of heat
It's the dessicant one I am looking for in our climate
