Simulates the flicker of a TV image, to deter burglars.
Built-in sensor switches device on when it gets dark. Timer setting for 2, 4 or 6 hours. Has a 3 year guarantee.
I think it's the same one on their German Lild site which says 12 leds, Less than 3watts and mostly very positive reviews.

These create a very realistic effect of a TV being on inside a room. So effective that when we were on holiday, my father-in-law thought we had left a TV on and called us to ask if we wanted him to go in and switch it off for us.

Not at all. I've just always thought of these things. How to burgle a house, how to dispose of a body. etc

To the best of my knowledge I don't know any burglars and I am sure I don't know enough of them to be able to make such a generalisation. You and I appear to mix in different crowds as you clearly know a lot more criminals than I do.

Of course, this is 100% correct. The problem is, many people don't know this and the bully boy TV licence salesman do a good job of intimidating people and overstating their powers (they have none).

Can't quite understand, if you don't watch licencable TV you just close the door. If you do watch it then you are liable.

I had a simulated TV, it was stolen in a simulated burglary and all the simulated cops did was drink simulated coffee.

Like you, I've also been to some countries and I'm pretty sure no other country allows salesman to lie and bully on a member of the public's doorstep, trying to get the person to buy a product they haven't asked for and may not want or need.

'simulates the flicker of a TV' eh? Do they sell a 100Hz flicker free version? I hate to think potential burglars would think I had merely a 50Hz TV', the shame.

Why not get a wifi plug and randomly switch your TV on over wifi or 3G. About 12-15 quid. Look for orvibo s2

maybe because that's twice the price of this deal, a lot more effort to set up and use, and a tv will use more power so cost more to run too?

Don't move to Austria or Germany as you'll pay more.
Many countries have a TV licencing policy. I've been to some and thank goodness for the BBC. I see many may not like the bbc, but from what I've seen it is the best national provider.

Not is their bullying tactics. How they can get away with trying to blatantly bully people into getting a licence is beyond me.

Does this work if you leave the room light on and with curtains drawn? Can the lights be seen from outside? With nets and curtains I would have expected little or no TV lighting to show through but I've not checked

I bought one of these a while back. I have it running automatically every day after dark behind some very thin curtains in my box room which faces the front of my house, so it looks like there is someone up there watching TV until late every night even when I'm out. Due to the curtains you can't actually see into the room but you can see the lights flickering.
Thing is, I don't actually watch TV and so avoid paying the TV tax. I had a knock from the TV tax inspector last November who was doing the rounds checking un-licenced addresses and accused me of watching TV without paying. Recorded my box room window on his mobile phone as 'evidence' and said I'd be hearing from him again but never did. Pity, I would have had so much fun.
