turns out I got a faulty one. just swapped it in store with another white radiator (pallet out the back). fan working fine on this one. cheers

@jamessmith - I've turned the fan switch in (lights up) but it doesn't seem like the fan is spinning.... is yours noticeable when it's switched in?

Yes. It makes an obvious noise and hot air is near instant.
The air comes out of the grill at the side next to the switch not at the end - that's the inlet.

They had about as many white as black at the Northwich branch.

It's a good deal IMO. Build quality seems decent. The knobs are a bit cheap and the fan is something else to go wrong, but it's £40 and probably made in China. The actual body of the thing seems well made and you only need to attach the wheels which is pretty easy.
It does what it's supposed to and warms quickly. I personally prefer oil filled radiators to the other electric types as the tapering of temperature feels better IMO. The fan isn't quiet, but a really handy bonus, and you can use that alone if say you wanted a quick bit of heat but are going out soon.

Of course that assumes it's on for all of those hours, which if using the thermostat it is unlikely to be. The real cost you couldnt be sure of unless you use it in your own house with your own temperature setting but as the man said more than gas etc

All electric heaters are basically 100% efficient (that goes for this, the most expensive high tech heater you can find or grannys old 3 bar electric fire). You can pay more for looks or build quality, quietness, fast heat up, but in terms of running costs it really makes no difference.

...It costs 2.5kWh to run on full power. Like a kettle, but on all the time. So the answer is yes, I think. Although your definition of a fortune is different to mine maybe. If you're paying 10p a kWh it is costing you £1 to have it on for 4 hours. So say £3 a day, £90 a month. It is cheaper to burn gas, it always is. The conversion is tricky because electricity doesn't have a Calorific value to compare against conventional fuels. But if it did, it would be rubbish.

I bought one of these last year and it's great! It gives off a lot of heat on par with a standard radiator. Can't fault it!

I bought mine about 4 years ago, gets used daily and still going strong. The built in fan heater is useful for instant heat whilst the oil filled radiator heats up.
