Btw, my wish list actually has 150 headphones/earphones collected over the last 10 years! Around 90 are ~£50 or over.

A lot of what he reviews are shipped only from the USA, like Schiit products for example. That keeps me from spending too much :smile:

The AT M40X's are decent closed headphones. Open headphones, there's so many :smile:

An allrounder please, that'll be reasonably good with music, movies & games (in that order). Noise-cancelling not important. Durability is. I'm coming from an entry-level AKG K 511, so yes, would like to be blown away just a little :smiley:

I don't have a proper stereo/amp, so will be using it with my PC & TV only.

My PC soundcard is a Creative X-Fi Titanium HD & this is what it has to say about using headphones:

Also realised I might need a couple (but may be constrained by budget) - 1-open & 1-closed-back, so I have the option of wearing either based on the situation & who else is around at the time. I'm not a bass junkie (don't listen to that kind of music either), but if it has a little extra in that department, I'm not opposed to it. Budget for both is £250. If there is one truly good pair (open/closed - B&O H6 perhaps?), then I don't mind spending my entire budget on that one. Sadly missed this recent B&O deal:

Thanks BigYoSpeck, not everyday does one come across a set of headphones with 4-6 variations to choose from!

The lower the ohms rating the louder they are with less amplification. So if you're plugging them straight into a phone or laptop, the lower impedance one's will sound louder. The higher impedance tends to require a headphone amp.

It's not linear either so 80 ohm aren't 3 times louder than 250 ohm. You're best off listening to them plugged into your music source to tell which will suit you. My 250 ohm are perfectly fine plugged straight into a PC or laptop, but are too quiet plugged into a phone and even an 80 ohm set of different headphones I have aren't much better plugged into a phone.

What sources are you using and playing from what devices? I've heard the HD 201's and compared them with many low/mid range headphones and the difference was huge. "The law of diminishing returns" might be used for headphones that cost 3 grand but I wouldn't use it here.

I opted for beyerdynamic dt770 over these. Love them.

I have both the HD201 and the HD 598's (bought last year when £75 in lightning sale) and I wasn't blown away, I was disappointed that there wasn't that much difference and relieved I had't paid any more for them, they are better but not that much better. I guess it's the law of diminishing returns at play or my ears and sources aren't good enough.

Got them last year at £75, if they drop there again am picking another set up for work, they are that good :smiley:

I mentioned 'spare' as I already have HD650 which I've had for like 7 years now. I love them to bits.
I got them for £100 on Ebay used - they've actually increased in price since then :confused:
It would nice to have a cheaper pair of cans that I wouldn't worry too much about other people touching.

I've got a pretty pricey set of headphones. I paid £130 for them. 10 years ago. I'll probably still be using them in 10 years.

£100 sounds like a lot to spring on a single item. But these aren't like your phone that's out of date in 12 months. You're going to use them until something breaks them. I probably spend more in coffee shops a year than I've spent on headphones in the last decade.

got the cream ones and the sound is exceptional but they do leak a lot of sound due to the open back design

looking at that chart it seems they were on offer last Black Friday, maybe the same this year as they do tend to repeat the same stock items.

I have some of these and they sound really good to my ears.

Worth noting that they are the open back style, so you will be sharing your music with anyone near you.
