Cheap enough to grab & have some retro fun with, I've ordered one to show my kids what gaming was like in the "old days", I'm hoping that I will be able to beat my 6yr old in something at last!
Great reviews & seems to be plenty of stock around

If it wasn't obvious by the 2 buttons on the front it's worth pointing out to anyone that might not know, that this is a master system/game gear emulator not a mega drive emulator. Argames make various versions and they look very similar but are vastly different - and it explains the slightly odd game collection it is shipped with.

Personally I would spend the extra 15 and get the megadrive / genesis version which also comes with some cracking titles and an SD card slot so you can run roms assuming that you own the game already...

It's a good price, but there are better options out there. For example, this one on Amazon at £17.89 is the mutts nuts with it's increased screen size (+.4") and comes with an SD slot to import your own games to the device.

It comes pre-loaded with '20 built-in SEGA games including Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage' and has 6 buttons as opposed to the two on the Argos listing. More games in-build include 'Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle & Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi' (sold).

Personally speaking, I think the Amazon one would be the better choice, but I don't know if the Argos one includes a SD card slot, which would be the selling point of a device like this for me.

These old games are much better remembered as being great without returning to them. It's like the old saying 'never meet your heroes'
People remember how great their first cars were. You sit back in it now for a 300 mile holiday journey and your great mark one fiesta will soon give you new memories.

Sadly those are Megadrive games and this is a Game Gear. Also RR was an EA game and Street Fighter was Capcom so it's a bit harder to license. The Mini NES does have quite a few third party games though, which is pretty impressive.

Ah, the memories. Altered Beast, Streets of Rage 2 and Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing were my favourites, back in the day.

I am pretty sure I had this one before (there have been a few) and I would steer clear. The emulation can be a bit shoddy and the dpad is pretty weak. It is the SMS and not the mega drive meaning the game collection isn't going to be as good. You can't save either. You could go on alibaba im sure and get a portable emulation machine that would do everything 16 bit and below for cheaper.

I wouldn't recommend that either. The mega drive one could have been great but they stuffed up the emulation even more. The sound quality is almost nails on a chalkboard. I wanted to get one for travel and read reviews about the sound quality beforehand and thought they may have been exaggerated a bit, but no, the sound emulation is disgusting. Sonic tunes sound nothing like you remember them. You can't even save in games even when the original games allowed it.

I try not to be outwardly critical of stuff like this as I'm a retrogaming snob and my standards are needlessly high. It'll do the job for some people as a blast of nostalgia or a bit of fun to keep kids quiet.

I suspect most on here won't be overly bothered about the colour reproduction, sound issues or refresh rate issues that you or I might.

Obviously the official correct answer is a modded PSP
alexijordan

Good point. For kids in the back seat of the car or on the train/plane it would do the job. I just hate how at games had the opportunity to make a great portable machine and they completely stuffed it up.

I purchased one of these when they came out. @T games make cheap and cheerful licensed plug and play game devices and this is no different. The mono only sound is off key and distorted, the LCD screen has much too low resolution to clearly display the Mega Drive's 320x224 native resolution and the device intermittently crashes in the middle of a game. If you are a serious gamer who cares anything about games then I would avoid, even at this low price
waynester21

I'd just like to point out that I've got the Mega Drive version by AtGames and I had the version from Amazon. They look just about identical but the AtGames one from Argos is much better. The frame rate and sound lags on the Amazon version and it gets worse when you plug it into a TV. The AtGames version has a high frame rate and sound which is the correct speed but of course not the correct pitch (like most emulators for Mega Drive). My advice is to go with Argos.

The quality of these are generally poor so buying from Argos or Amazon might be a good idea, I paid £15 for one from an eBay shop and it broke in about 2 weeks. The video quality is not great and the sound is better switched off. Just remember you get what you pay for.

Somehow my original post became well liked so it's a bit out of context. Where my original post sits in the thread is another post advocating exactly that - a rooted PSP is probably the ultimate way to emulate on the go (unless you have a GPD XD which a lot of people won't have or have access to)

Just received my MegaDrive/6 button model (was £30 on amazon, but got it for £17 on ebay.
Cracking device. Been playing Streets Of Rage, Sonic and even Mario games. 100 games preinstalled, surprised how well made it seems to be. Lithium battery, lasts all day so far. Volume control and headphone jack. SD card slot to put other ROMS.

Well chuffed with this, never expected it to be so well made. Got another as a stocking filler for christmas too.
