Don't know about the 3rd or 4th gear thing but when i leased my Diesel Infinity Q50 the dealer told me to take it for a good run at speed at least once a week to clean out the DPF if i was just doing local runs every week, if i return it clogged up i would have to pay for a new one.

Yes but to start with you also said drive at 60-70 in 3rd gear, this will all depend on gear ratios of a car. If I did this in mine I old knacker my engine as it would be redlining to the oint of over revving. But it can be useful if you don't do a lot or often to drop a gear when doing 60-70 on a motorway to help the DPF.

​Non sense adam. Whenever I have been stuck stationary for a long time, say a motorway closure, My DPF comes up and the onboard system tells me to keep driving with info to lower current gear. I.e. I did 50-60 in third and 4th gear for 70. worked fine. Burnt off the particles quickly. Once engine is up to temp of 90 then normal driving will burn it off as it runs normally. Spoke to my garage who advise on a colder start engine dont idle too long as the DPF will keep appearing. Need to either get to temp with driving ++miles or lower gears at higher speeds. A full DPF will certainly 'knacker' your engine!

Diesels which smoke have a build up of soot in the catalyst which reduces it's efficiency. Chances are if your diesel is smoking you also have a clogged DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) both of which can be unclogged by dismantling and careful cleaning or "burning off the soot" by increasing the temperature of exhaust gases.

Diesels are best used for high mileage (100k+ miles over 5 years or roughly 80+ mile 5 working day commute) where they will naturally "burn off" this soot. If you drive less than this or find your diesel smoking try heating up your catalyst once the engine is up temperature. Leave it in 3rd at 60/70mph to heat the exhaust up.

Bg244 is very good and yes it's £20 a can but I've used it yearly and works great on getting rid of lumpy idle and poor acceleration flat spots.
