Can anyone say briefly how this rates compared to other recently released Pokemon games? I'm mildly interested but don't want to dip if Pokemon Y/Ruby/Sapphire are the better ones to play.

Why not? I just started playing Black on DS Lite (bought US version that does not okay on 3DS). It's really fun.
