I played Batman VR last night and, after getting the IPD right with the eye measurement and finally seating the headset properly, it was an incredible experience. If this is VR's Knack to the PS4 launch then imagine when VR's Uncharted 4 arrives. Impressive technology and how disorientated I was when I came out (in a deflated way) speaks volumes for how immersive it was.

I have a PSVR and I love it right now. I'm well aware of its flaws, low resolution, motion sickness etc. but as far as immersion goes it's like nothing else I've ever played. I can live with the ps3 quality graphics when I'm in a 3D world and clearly others do too.

It's obvious this is a niche product and it's not for everyone, it's also a first generation for the early adopters. But I don't see any reason to clog up the thread with negativity when other people are actually interested in getting a good deal on their PSVR

The answer is no. They are buying it to 'be batman' to 'fly an x-wing' or live inside the original battle zone. Impressive experiences never before available at this level of immersion. There is nothing like it and I expect improvements, like gran turismo to look much much better than Dr club vr. But I take you point there is a lack of content with depth at present but a year from now I expect that to be a different story. Personally I've advised people to wait for more content. But it also seems sour grapes from a lot of people struggling with the price tag.

Got this at the weekend and blown away! Running on a standard PS4. You do need a camera and you really need the move controllers. I hope as prepared to be under impressed but to me it's amazing. Downloaded the demo games and then ordered the PSVR worlds demo (London Heist is really short but fun), Rush of Blood (a bit too scary for me to be honest), and Eve Valkyrie (poor controls but a patch is due before Christmas). Tried Driveclub but it made me feel ill!

I seem to be one of the few that actual has the camera and 4 move controllers ready to be used.

They only pay 340 in cex(cash) ATM ,maybe 390 for vouchers(that are useless).

​htc vive on PC don't have much better graphics, not worth spending £700. it has nothing to do with pcs or ps4. It's mostly up to VR devices. they are not good enough to handle TV graphics, no matter how hard game designers are working their work is always limited by it.

So in other words this £330 purchase is completely useless unless you buy other things alongside it.

The biggest problem with VR is we don't have the technology yet to realise its potential, currently even at 1440p on phones it still looks like it was made with a potato, it does give a good effect of immersion though and is definitely usable. VR needs 8K and that will happen on phones long before it happens on PC.

My guess is that it will probably be dead before then. Anything that requires obtrusive and expensive wearable technology just never takes off. That's why 3D failed a few years ago and why the early attempts at VR tanked in the 90's.

It's interesting to read a PS4 Pro will make games much clearer. How is it though a bog standard PS4 can't even display a crisp PlayStation VR logo at the start of the PS VR demo disc? I returned my PSVR back to Amazon the low resolution and motion sickness didn't justify the asking price.

S/he is not interested in debate, is not interested in moving things forward, and most of all, is not interested in any argument with which absolute facts absolutely destroy anything they're claiming. Them aside, I've actually got PSVR and it's great. It will not replace "flat screen" gaming but it's a fantastic compliment if you love gaming in whatever form it takes. Driveclub feels so different when you're actually in the driver's seat and can anticipate corners in three dimensions. I've also been playing Rez and Rush Of Blood. And Super Hypercube. I want more. If you can afford it (for reference, I didn't bother with Move controllers and am having a great time) then it's a great device to have.

I would like to respond to that by proposing that nobody engages with Schnide regarding anything gaming related. He/she has terrible taste in games and just automatically assumes that anybody who agrees with him/her is wrong.

PSVR is undoubtedly not the peak of what VR will be, assuming it even ends up being on PlayStation in the long run. VR is only just beginning. The current headset is not perfect, but it's a damn good experience. You'd basically be saying don't buy the iPhone 4 because the 7 will come out in a few year's time.

OK let me put it differently. I put From Software games in a similar category to those places in Soho that provide 'special services' often involving high heels, large crosses, whips and latex. I don't see any point or value in those things personally but if other people want to spend their money and time on that kind of thing then good luck to them.

The problem is that around 20 years ago AAA games stopped being an outlet for creativity and instead became enterprising intellectual properties with shareholders and investors behind them. The reason why Kinect and Move only got crap games is because there wasn't enough of a player base out there to see a return on the development cost. Ubisoft only ported Zombi U to other formats because it didn't sell well enough on the Wii U and Ubisoft are by far the most open to exploration of the major publishers.

Unless this thing sells by the droves and manages to somehow get a high level of traction with PS4 owners (e.g. at least 1 in every 3) then it is bound to go the same way. Why do you think Microsoft tried to force the Kinect on every Xbox One owner for the first year?

The Wii opened up gaming to a wider audience, young kids, oaps and adults who would never normally have touched a computer game. It was immersive, entertaining and fun. Yes, there's thousands of Wii units kicking around doing nothing, because they sold rdicilous quantities and it came out in 2006, ten years ago. I don't have a ten year old PC that I still play games on either.

Yes, it opened up gaming to a larger and different audience but that doesn't spoil gaming. I can't stand Eastenders, but I'm not saying ti shouldn't exist for those that do. It doesn't stop me enjoying programs that I like.

Honestly, you could get a gold at the "Wrong Olympics" for that point.

I would say it is worth trying at least. So far I've been mostly impressed. Okay, the resolution is SD but that's only to be expected at present.

Driveclub (demo) made me want to vomit, as did Rigs. But otherwise I'm finding it enjoyable. Until Dawn Rush of Blood is amazing. Haven't reacted to a game in such a way ever - and I'm usually the last person to 'jump' when watching horror.

Tumbler - very enjoyable
Danger Ball - great
Heist - likewise enjoyable though too short
I've tried all of the demos and can actually see a future for this. I'm the sort of person who would usually agree with what Spark has said. Possibly more than a fad unlike Kinect/Move. The games so far are lacking in any depth though. A good sports game would be great - tennis, table tennis, baseball.

If people enjoy this stuff and find value in it then that's fine. It doesn't hurt me at all. I've said for the last couple of years now that if VR became the rule rather than the exception then I would just give up gaming entirely. Considering your lack of experience in the hardware, its a pretty bold statement. VR in the 90's was MILES away from where it needed to be. Today with today's technology it is only JUST good enough to be properly enjoyable.

VR failed in the 90's because it was ****, it's as simple as that.

If 'large and expensive' things were doomed to failure the Home PC would never have taken off. The first 'PCs' costs the equivalent of $5000 in todays money, at a time when people had much less disposable income.

I got it on release day but have since traded it in - i found that the graphics didn't live up too my expectations as were nowhere near as good as the screenshots that are used for publicity, DriveClub was particularly poor. Some of the experiences, such as The Kitchen demo and Eve Gunjack were good, as was the movie Alumette, which is fantastic use of the technology although not interactive in any way, but i just don't think the technology is there yet. Also, suffered terrible motion sickness when playing DC...

I bought the VR headset on launch day but sold it on 3 days later. The intention of the purchase wasn't for profiteering but I got £400 for it. The actual experience was really good, some of the experiences I tried were amazing however there were a few cons. It's a fairly low resolution, looking into the distance things become very pixelated and some text can be quite blurry. I also have two young kids so it isn't something I could leave connected.

The PS4 Pro should address some of the issues and help with the performance of VR, the PRO is a must buy if you want to get the best out of VR.

I'll see how Sony support this before reinvesting in the VR technology, I'm sure there will be an upgrade on the headset in 2018/19 if this version proves successful

I'll wait until the full bundle drops to this price before I buy PSVR, can definitely see a price drop on it after Xmas.

one thing i thought is worth mentioning is that i wear glasses and found that i needed to wear them with the headset but that in order to get the image clear on the screen my glasses lenses were actually pressing against the head unit lenses, i have hard of others who have found the same and whose headset lenses became scratched straightaway. When i used contact lenses it was obviously better but the headset had a tendency to mist up during play. very comfy headset though!

I would advise anyone thinking of buying one to actually try it in store first, i was so excited about this you wouldn't believe but after a week had no qualms about trading it in...

You are aware that there is a button at the bottom that allows you to move the lenses closer and further away to avoid such issues with glasses etc

It definitely has massive potential though, I have a GearVR and like it quite a bit, however trying to use a Galaxy S6 which has possibly the worst battery life of any phone ever made coupled with the VR which rips through the battery even faster makes a really irritating experience.

VR wasn't ready 25 years ago and it's still not ready now, the visual quality really lets it down. You might be right that it appears to be a fad.

That kitchen on the VR folks, any of use had trouble getting it to start ? Every time I've tried its saying basically the the controllers and VR are not facing the camera when they clearly are, its doing my nut in so gave up. Every other game is fine, just seems to be this.

Vive is that price for a good reason. Comes with the controllers, has a much more sophisticated tracking system and comes with two lighthouses. Plus the headset is a higher technical specification.
I haven't tried PSVR yet but it seems like a decent price. It should come with the camera and controllers though, as a bundle. I'm sure many parents will be buying it for xmas and finding out on xmas day it's unusable. Does it make it clear the camera is mandatory (and Move for some games) on the packaging?

It is speculation yes as the PRO hasn't been released yet but I will guarantee the additional power of the PRO will significantly improve the experience of VR having tried it on the standard PS4. I personally believe this was unofficially why they've released the PRO because VR in the standard PS4 won't be up to people's expectations. I have the PSVR a few things:-

Although the res of the screen is 1920x1080 it looks low res as only half goes to each eye.
A lot of people have said DriveClub makes them feel ill but I've been able to play it for hours fine, everyone reacts different to VR.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood with the move controllers is fantastic however it occasionally messes up the tracking of the controllers.
Kitchen (Resident Evil 7 demo) is WAY more terrifying in VR.

VR is a lot more immersive but the graphics are a significant downgrade, DriveClub VR in particular looks a lot worse than the original, more like PS3 in comparison.

To be honest it feels like PSVR needs PS4 Pro which should help make the graphics more of a PS4 standard. VR really transforms the experience but doesn't feel like the PS4 has quite enough power to fulfil the potential.

It's annoying that in America they did get a complete bundle with it all but us in the UK or EU get standard only! Would probably buy the complete bundle if given the chance!

Kinect wasn't awful it was just that nobody ever really gave it a chance and the Wii outsold the PS3 and 360 because it was cheaper and had an approach factor unmatched by pretty much any gadget from the last decade apart from the iPad.

I seriously hope that it will. The last few console generations have been bad for console manufacturers trying to shoehorn crap onto the market. Paid network subscriptions, DLC, motion control accessories etc. But this generation has really been the worst so far and it isn't even 3 years in yet.

Yeah thought I would have a go at this in Game then £5 just to try it and thought well this is going to encourage people to purchase it. Yes it's worth £5 to see if you like it or not. But this is not the way to promote something this new.

The Betamax video recorder was the better machine but the mass volume of VHS won out, a bit like the cheaper HD vs Blu Ray.... I think this VR stuff is like 3D it'a turkey and were heading to Christmas :-)

I have this and it's honestly amazing, was blown away. Forget the technical difficulties with some so so resolution etc. All of that is forgotten when the game starts.
I do think it could do with a graphical upgrade, but given the hardware it has to run on and the cost it needed to be around, they obviously chose a lower spec accordingly.
Either way it's still a great experience, albeit with limited games (and not many in pipeline). Still worth it if you have money to burn!

I ended up reading their entire argument from the link schnide posted earlier, it had me laughing quite a lot and that bit in particular about their house burning down or getting robbed whilst they had a VR headset on keeps getting me chuckling to myself, I might be delirious, it is very late.

I have PS VR, I got the amazon deal with 3 games that then didn't come with 3 games but I eventually got a refund for those 3 games not being there, but I have played Until dawn rush of blood and I get motion sickness from it and I had this issue with the gear VR that came with my s7 edge. I do enjoy VR games they just seem to make me very ill, I am hoping in time I will build up a tolerance. Strangely the demo for drive club didn't cause any issues whereas there had been reports of that being bad.

The kitchen demo was amazing and I will be picking up Resident evil 7 on ps4 opposed to the xbox just for the VR experience.

I am considering picking up here they lie this week as well, I am particularly interested in the horror potential for VR over anything else.

I have a PSVR and I love it right now. I'm well aware of its flaws, low resolution, motion sickness etc. but as far as immersion goes it's like nothing else I've ever played. I can live with the ps3 quality graphics when I'm in a 3D world and clearly others do too.

It's obvious this is a niche product and it's not for everyone, it's also a first generation for the early adopters. But I don't see any reason to clog up the thread with negativity when other people are actually interested in getting a good deal on their PSVR

I bought this just because of what someone said in the comments.....Ive been blown away by VR! This is the best thing since Video Games went from 2D to 3D! Must buy is Batman!!! absolutely amazing! Ide love them to create another batman game like the Tell tales games in VR!

The answer is no. They are buying it to 'be batman' to 'fly an x-wing' or live inside the original battle zone. Impressive experiences never before available at this level of immersion. There is nothing like it and I expect improvements, like gran turismo to look much much better than Dr club vr. But I take you point there is a lack of content with depth at present but a year from now I expect that to be a different story. Personally I've advised people to wait for more content. But it also seems sour grapes from a lot of people struggling with the price tag.

Excuse me, but isn't it totally rubbish? The tracking is suppose to be terrible and there's issues with people reporting motion sickness (ever sat too close to your television screen?) I don't think you'll be able to do anything finesse as playing a fps or a particularly eventful racing game. Put it this way: You couldn't with Playstation Move and PSVR is using a the same technology (You know, for tracking). I could be wrong. Either way, two year time it most likely will be in the closet gathering dust, with PSMove and Xbox Kinect. I would like MS to partner up with HTC or someone and develop a solution for Xbox. I've been day dreaming about playing Halo 5 Guardians in a completely encapsulated 3D experience. But using light strips and a single camera for means of tracking, no no no.

Nope. The tracking is extremely good.

Tracking? If you play in massively direct sunlight with lots of extremely reflective surfaces or lights behind you? It may struggle a little. I play in a normally lit room, I use the PSVR with motion controllers and the camera - zero tracking issues. I've used it on average 30mins a day since release day, not a single instance of tracking issues.

It's not sour grapes on my account, I just don't want one. If it fails (and I still strongly expect that it will) then the likes of Sony will move on to the next thing. If it succeeds then people like me will just give up gaming altogether. No biggy either way really.

It would be a sad day for the publishers. It's where a lot of my recreation money goes and I doubt it's just me.

It may have sold well but it's still garbage. The last One Direction album sold well but I very much doubt that people will be heralding it as a true milestone in the history of music in 20 years from now.

If VR takes off you'll quite gaming? That's utter spam. I don't like Eastenders but it doesn't stop me watching something else or stop me from letting others enjoy it. Non-VR games won't go away just because VR has emerged.

It depends on the extent to which it takes off. If it becomes the defacto then yes I will quit because I simply don't want to adopt it (and I absolutely don't want to pay for it).

I refused to buy an Xbox One for the first year because of the mandatory Kinect sensor and only got one when Kinect became optional. This is the same thing really but I do think those people who are saying with all certainty that this is going to be the future are perhaps being a bit premature.

in your (minority) opinion it is garbage, the console is indisputably what consumers want, hence the very large numbers of units sold, using your logic you could say every single product is garbage...as of course better versions of the same product will be developed in the future as technology develops

The PS4's success was a case of right place, right time. It was cheaper than the XB1 and a lot of resentment had built up against Microsoft in the preceding 12 months. Let's face it, it's not exactly overflowing with great exclusives now, is it?

And for the record I think both of the current gen consoles are crap. I'm not just taking a pop at the PS4 but I find PS4 fanboys to be particularly irritating. In this age people buy the console their mates have and more launch PS4's were sold than launch XB1's. That is the only reason why it has become the dominant platform.

As people are saying it will never replace TV gaming its just a different way to play. To say you would give up 'gaming' due to vr's popularity is extremely odd. Like saying I'm giving up driving a car as others like motorbikes?? It's your choice I guess.

If it's blurry then you've not got it seated correctly on your face. I found I had to have it sitting a lot further up my head than I assumed and that the back band at more of an angle. It takes a bit of wiggling to find the right spot at first

People said that about smartphone gaming and portable consoles but here we are a few years on and Sony are pulling out of the handheld console market altogether whereas Nintendo's next handheld will be combined within their home console.

No, it wasn't that - i tried for ages to get it right and know all about how to adjust it backwards and forwards and to move it around on my head to get rid of the blurriness, but the issue i had was with my vision - unless it was right up against my glasses then it was as blurry as it would be if i wasn't wearing glasses. When i switched to contact lenses it was fine.

Anyway, its a moot point for me as i have traded my set in, don't think the technology is there yet, will revisit it a few years down the line when the resolution of the headset is higher - i was really looking forward to watching movies on a virtual 225inch screen but the resolution is too low - it isn't horrendous but it is a long way from the 1080p i usually watch on my tv.

You're excused, except for the fact you haven't done your research. The tracking is good, and motion sickness is a factor of the software and an individual's sensitivity, not PSVR itself. You can cherry pick stories about motion sickness for any title on any hardware. As far as an FPS goes, it's traversal that's the problem there, aside from the fact that FPS' for PSVR already exist and more are coming (Farpoint, for one). As far as eventful racing games.. well I'm playing Driveclub VR and that's what it is. So..?

If Microsoft are going to partner with anyone, it absolutely won't be with HTC Vive because a) Vive is part-built by Valve who are in serious PC gaming competition with Microsoft and b) Microsoft part-own Facebook, who own Oculus Rift, which is why Xbox controllers are shipping with it.

The reviews say that PSVR is the best in terms of comfort, and definitely price, and that the experience is not sufficiently compromised to stop it from being the leading headset out there. The tracking is good. So other than all that..

Took mine back to Argos today. Either the 'wearing tights on your head' effect is normal or mine was faulty. Otherwise, bloomin brilliant, especially Batman and Rez.

Thats normal, they all have that i have tried two that are the same, loads about it on the net. You can go into devices and turn the brightness down which lessens the effect. Just stop looking for it in dark scenes and its fine

Too late, its gone back. Normal or not, it was annoying me and, when you game on a 55inch 4K TV, that drop in quality wasnt worth the trade off for a sense of immersion. It cost me nowt to try it and Im glad I did. If I ever get the urge again, the tech will either be improved, cheaper or both so is a win win.

Can someone tell me if they can ever get the word left on the psvr calibration screen to be totally clear? I find my left lens is never as clear as the right, even after doing the pupil distance etc

I found increasing the pupil distance a bit from what the system recommended made a positive difference. I think I went up from 68 to 72. Maybe try that and see if that helps.

To be honest I've not tried the specific test you are trying. I will try this evening and let you know. I would try maybe re-calibrating the left lens up a few points and seeing if that has any effect and then tune from there. It's a shame the tuning can't be done via sliders... Hope you find the sweet spot.

Appreciate that, would be great to know if its just normal, save me the hassle of swapping it for no reason. The sliders would be so much easier, hopefully an update will add this. Cheers

Yup, I can't get the word 'left' to be a clean as the others. I've adjusted the ipd back to the normal calculation (I read that you have to be as close to 70cm as possible) - this did seem to correct a few pixels of green showing in the lettering. Looking at it from my left eye is clearer than my right eye but this effect is negated when using both.

Thanks for coming back to me, been messing about with the ipd since i got home but doesnt really make a difference to the word left. When my right eye is closed anything with the left eye towards the right is blurry, but then the other way around my right eye can see clearer towards the left, not sure a new unit would help as you have said yours is the same
