I sold 1200 units to a school about a year back and I have had 13 back so far. All of them have had a failed power supply which isn't the most expensive component to fix. Make of that what you like

Anyone used zoostorm pc recently I know up to about 18 months ago the failure rate was terrible, I probably had 1 in 5 fail in under a year, faulty ram, mobos, faulty hdds (frequently mfg dates were years old).. Also 18" monitor is no good if you have the budget get a cheap 24" for £80 to £90

We've had a Zoostorm pc in our gym for the last 4 years, used daily and operating for 18 hours a day. No issues whatsoever. Pot luck as big brands also fail.

I've had a zoostorm for a few years as family pc. It's been reliable enough and good value in hindsight. I added an extra fan as we found it ran hot but that may be where the case sits in the desk.

kidsidrob
8 Oct 16#24
could you get a good graphics card in?
WillieGophar to kidsidrob
8 Oct 161#28
It is extremely unlikely that the power supply unit in this will have:
a) Enough spare watts, and
b) The necessary connectors
to allow a powerful graphics card to be added.
When this sort of spec has been posted previously, the advice given is that you could probably fit a 750ti graphics card - lowish power consumption and is powered from the PCI slot, so doesn't need the dedicated extra power leads from the PSU.
I'm no expert on these things, just passing on what I've read in other threads...

I was surprised to see Pentium branding still in use, thought that had died out years ago.

The dealbreaker for me is windows/10 this isn't just a "zoomstorm" issue - an elderly relative is looking for a W/7 system, being of "advancing years" they genuinely have problems with adapting to new technology and this, I fear, would be the last straw.
We insist on systems being suitable for people with disabilities and impairments, but I feel Microsoft missed a trick not being willing to provide a "legacy mode" for those accustomed to less - shall we just say - "touchy feely" operating systems!
To put it in context - I've had to install Thunderbird because it's a lot more like Outlook Express than Windows mail (no, I don't get it either!)

Install classic shell to make it look and feel like Win7. I've been using classic shell since Win8. http://www.classicshell.net/
Also you can create shortcuts for shutdown and restart and pin them to the taskbar so it's easy for them to switch off their PC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTdXOXo4FTY (I've done this to my dad's laptop and he's a complete novice)

Don't transpose your feelings on us (like we are all in it together) I actually really like Windows 10.
The mail client is a fast, clean, very nice app for both phone and mobile. Ironically, its also got very large buttons and text, which although geared for touch actually makes it very usable for those with failing eyesight (i.e. older).
In fact I know 2 70 year olds who use Windows 10 without evening thinking about it. Its still got a Windows button, its still got a menu. Its not _that_ different from those before. The really amazing thing about Win10 is the new core, that runs on Xbox, Phone, PC and VR. Its an amazing software engineering feat. Its taken 20 years for MS to get there. Can you imagine realigning millions of lines of code

I feel ashamed to admit it with the way they have forced a lot of things upon us but I'm loving Windows 10 also. It's always been this way, new Windows is woeful, next is great and repeat.

I also plead guilty to thinking Windows 10 wonderful. Fantastic support for peripherals. No need to worry about drivers etc. Windows just sorts it out during installation. Not sure how much crap you get from a preinstalled machine. I am not bothered about privacy, as I have nothing to hide, and everything is already recorded somewhere anyway.

I wonder can you tell me. How do you diagnose, if the power supply is the problem, or if it is the motherboard or cpu say?
congrevecv
9 Oct 16#45
***leeparsons*** to answer your question, any mother board has it's Name such as Gigabyte & model number clearly visible.
During start up a sequence of morse code like beeps tells you which of the parts you name is the problem.
There is also a paper clip test for the power supply as well
leeparsons to congrevecv
10 Oct 16#46
I do realise this. But if there are no beep codes, what would you think the problem is? I personally believe it is the power supply for one (nothing happens). I have had two units, same models and parts. One the fan spins, the other doesnt. No beep codes on both,
congrevecv
10 Oct 16#47
***leeparsons*** Have you tried a replacement power supply?
leeparsons to congrevecv
10 Oct 16#48
Obviously not yet, I dont want to buy a power supply, if the motherboard is shot. Which probably mean the ddr ram, cpu, graphics card are probably shot as well.

10 Oct 16#49
***leeparsons*** Is there a problem checking the power supply with a well known paper clip method, google will guide you?
