I got the plastic version of this for the same price and I thought that was a good deal.

Wired gives faster speeds so useful for some people if you don't have enough spare ports

Why would you need this? I have a ports in my virgin router? My ethernet devices are shield TV and qnap server. Everything else is wireless

1. It's faster 2. 4 ports isn't enough for me and alot of people, wired connection ALWAYS better than WiFi why my xbox one is wired not wireless

Because 'everything else' is sharing that limited wireless bandwidth. Plus some of us have home labs or network points in each room or older homes with very solid walls that wireless doesn't penetrate well.
It's a very good price for a metal 8 port.

No moveable objects should be on a wired network. laptops/smartphones/tablets wireless. Remember if a wireless router says 1300mbits of bandwidth, its shared, between x amount of wireless devices. Plus as you add wireless devices to a single wireless access point(ap) network, and use them at the same time; the latency increase. This doesn't happen in a wired network and less so in a multiple wireless ap network .

Sounds like you don't. Some people have more than 4 wired devices. Some people have multiple wired devices in another room than their router.

I think, if you got an old router, you can use that as a switch.

Yes. Very few will offer 8 ports (which you may want) or be gigabit though (if you are streaming high bitrate video to multiple devices from a home server you may well want to increase your bandwidth). Gigabit ethernet will do nothing for most peoples internet though, and you only get the gigabit transfer speeds between gigabit devices.

I got a gigabit 5 port net gear and i need another 2 more port. So instead of spending money on 8port switch, i used my old router connected to my switch and i got an extra 4 more ports. (I dont have a home server at the moment).

I actually bought one of these yesterday and got delivered last night. Meant to post but forgot.
Working great (not that I would expect otherwise)

Have some heat! Excellent price for a good quality, reliable product. I bought the plastic 5-port version earlier in the year for just under a tenner, but would definitely have bought this if it was available at this price. It's a no brainer!
Wired is a much better option over WiFi which isn't anywhere near as performant, but of course many will prefer the convenience of WiFi at the expense of lower speeds, slight lag and less reliable connectivity.

I got three of the plastic ones in different areas in my house to have ethernet in every room and connect wifi routers to to extend wifi zones as I have metal in between some walls in my house which means wifi reception is always poor.
There is no loss in internet speed even if you daisy chain these.
Excellent devices.

These are junk, avoid. I've bought truck loads of network gear over the years and Netgear is far and away the worst. You'll be lucky to get a year out of it.

All my Netgear switches are still going, Ithink the oldest is about 7 years old and the newest is probably 8 months, cant really fault these switches imo.

I've had one of these for the past 3 years and still going good? A nice but if kit. Run out of ports though! Could do with another one

Interesting ive had two of these for three years and not had any issues. If it fails withing the first year send it back. I have burned through countless other network hardware from other brands at this price point (TP Link,Zyxel and others) and these switches have outlasted it all.

So I'm really lucky to have had 10 years out of mine? It has been switched off yet.

Only thing I don't like about this is that power is one side and network ports are on the other, therefore you typically always see wires which is not ideal if you need one in a place where you are trying to hide wires, the plastic version has all wiring out the back on one side

Agreed, the plastic version has power and Ethernet connectors on the same side. I purchase the plastic ones now for this very reason.

I have the plastic one connected to my powerline adaptors as I have 5 devices including the main tv that needs a quicker speed to my plex Server. Even though I have a top end wireless router.
recommended and cheaper than updating the powerline adaptors to a multiple ports version.

Bought one last night, didn't realize it was a bargain price!
I have two old routers piggy backed as switches so will replace them and the two power supplies with this - will be a little neater!
