I'm not particularly pro-Quorn Mr Officer, but I am pro, people tip toeing away from meat consumption and this product tends to be a bridge for some, to pure plant based eating minus eggs & dairy.

I never said it was 100% natural, you have added that term to the debate by incorrectly quoting me. Define Additives. "Pure" Orange made from concentrate has an additive...water. Most foods have sugar or salt as an additive.The original reference was to the term "chemicalised", which it is, along with every other food stuff on the planet. Nothing grows without being "chemicalised".

You omitted that the child in question died from an Asthma attack, had been hospitalised 10 times prior to his death for the same ailment, and had stopped taking his life-dependent medication one month prior.

Lets see how the statistics hold up in comparison. Death from food poisoning is around 0.00005% of the population per year, in the Western world. **IF** the death from Quorn was substantiated, it would result in death from Quorn poisoning being around 0.000000001% (1 death in 30 years).

You could conclude - all other facts precluded (which seems to be the norm around here) - that Quorn is 20,000 times safer than food in general.

Personally, I would say a Mumsnet thread is not a credible source of scientific information.

Good way to get illnesses ingesting heavily processed and chemicalised food like this, just as bad as processed meat if you ask me.

Regarding comments about why their products are styled as meat - the reason is twofold: Firstly it means the products can be eaten alongside meat-eaters without the person feeling like an outsider (eg. a vegetarian child in a family) - the chicken nuggets and sausages are good there. Secondly it's so it can be substituted in tasty recipes, the mince and chicken pieces can be used to make lots of things.

Glad to see I'm not imagining this, every time I've tried Quorn I've been violently ill, so maybe I'm allergic to the fungus.

To me, the real issue isn't the fact we eat meat, it's the volume of it we consume and the fact the animals are treated as commodities that is the issue. Having said that, having practiced vegetarianism for a few years now I have moved away from the mass "blinkering" that sees eating meat as separate from eating animal corpses. I personally think vegetarianism is becoming A LOT more mainstream, and we will reach a "tipping point" in the community psyche where clarity is found for a vast majority, and meat consumption will drop away. I think the best comparison is to slavery - once considered perfectly acceptable, with only "crazies" opposing it. We've come a long way and we've a long way to go...

Would you like a series of authoritative science-based reports looking at the direct link between meat & dairy consumption and heart disease, bowel cancer, diabetes etc etc?

I know piles of fellow humans, in the past, who ate Quorn regularly without incident. To cite your example, could the same be said for smoking a pile of fags each week? Nope. Clear signs of degrading health.

There will be isolated cases for many, if not all food products.

I have specific allergies myself that I have to check labels for, including gluten, which causes inflammation in my gut, yet other members of my family have no issues whatsoever.

How many times do we have to tell you, CSPI is not a credible source of information.. They are literally paid by Quorns biggest competitor, Garden Burger. You can see their adverts on their site. They are in no way a scientific organisation. It's literally a bunch of people saying whatever they want (or rather, are paid to). It is total, utter, corporate paid-for, FUD and lies. How can you not understand this? Are you also paid by Garden Burger by chance??

Regarding one person dying from a food allergy. Why does this surprise you? 200 people a year die from food allergies in the US alone.

Quorn sausages are simply amazing. I gave one to my fat brother and I didn't tell him and he still ate it; and he's normally very picky on food...

That said, if I eat more than one of a Quorn sausage for a meal I will feel sick.

A pointless comment, most foods stuffs have caused death and have associated risks.

The concept of "tasting like cardboard" is a joke, albeit a tired one now. Obviously, if their products tasted that bland, they wouldn't sell in such a high volume and as a former user of Quorn, I can guarantee, that my own meals, when dressed properly with a sauce and vegetables and spices, did not taste of cardboard.

Anyway - the key point is, the product symbolises a step away from the cruel meat industry, but they need to step away further and stop using dairy and eggs. It is good to see vegan items now flashing up in their product line.

My opinion is, these sorts of products are unnecessary, if you have access to chick peas, lentils, green peas etc. - as these items are enough within themselves.

Dream on - this is a public forum and on most deals you'll find opinion, and at times, useful information. In order to make an informed choice about an 'alleged' bargain, there needs to be a discussion and ethical arguments are also relevant.

I've only once inadvertently tried it when the packaging was stuck to the food when I microwaved it.. So I got a bit of a flavour of what it was like..

Anyway, let's not get off the topic - this forum is not about personal food preferences but more about getting the best deals..

Quorn mince is ok cooked on the job for a chilli, but from the slow cooker it's a shile of pite.

I have to say that the early meat substitutes weren't very good but these quorn products are decent. Not a vegetarian but would like to reduce my meat consumption. People eat way too much meat nowadays and it would be better on a whole if we all reduced eating it.

I've had some chilli con carne made from quorn and enjoyed it. So this deal would give me a chance to try some more. Have some heat.

It's OK, I got the measure of the man... you never know, he might move away from his factory-farm propaganda and buckets of chicken and coke eventually. They say hope springs eternal.

I changed after a few years of nihilism and macho-ism... it took exposure to some hardcore slaughter videos and hard, cold, logic & reason that eventually broke through my armour, and let the compassion flow freely.

Thing is, most of us who are informed, understand that moving away from the corpse-eating-model is the way to go, but we have our work cut out still and on dark days, I don't see a glimmer of hope for a universal change to plant based eating, it will take a vile cataclysm to wake people up on mass, probably, and it's coming, the signs are there... I think we are going to pass through seriously turbulent waters in the not too distant. Maybe for people like First Officer though, he's happy to say "f@@@ it" and carry on with the buckets of cheap chicken, because it might not be in his lifetime that the "s" hits the fan.

I'll admit it's hard to resist. I did take a peek at his deals, which are unsurprisingly and as expected almost all meat based! And I noticed him commenting that pork sausages were "quite healthy". I think someone with that level of nutritional knowledge clearly would have no interest in Quorn or anything like it.
Anyway, after that he went into one of my deals, over a year old, just to basically say "cold", without any evidence. Some mod deleted it shortly after however. Just thought you should know what sort of person you're engaging with. I think if we knew any more we would be even more ashamed of engaging with him..

First Officer has shown up to drop his cardboard comment - I noted him waxing lyrical over eating buckets of KFC the other day and I couldn't resist, sinner that I am, dropping some snide remarks on that thread & hitting cold. Its all a bit childish really isn't it though.

Humans eh. We all go off on a mad mad ego trip in these text boxes, but I do tend to pride myself on generally only dropping thoughts that I would offer in flesh and blood land, even the somewhat abrasive thoughts, its all in the delivery - Bill Hicks was a master at sledgehammer wit whilst making people laugh at the same time, you just have to coat truth-bombs in a comedic cloak, which doesn't always translate particularly well in text boxes - thus comments sections are mostly cancerous cesspools & should probably be avoided, mostly.

Much less calories than meat, cheaper and better for the environment. In my opinion the bacon aside (which I just don't like at all) - Quorn is just as tasty as meat.
