I'm hoping the G6 is a solid phone as it may well be the phone I'll go for to replace my Note 4. I removable battery is essential for me as battery packs are a pain and I'm often on 12+ hr bus or train rides when I'm traveling, with no power source. Since Samsung moved away and to the sealed units, my options are becoming very limited.

The B&O stuff only comes with pay monthly deals.

Copied and pasted from t&cs-
Promotion only applies to customers purchasing the LG G5 on a pay monthly contract.

Is it decent? I loved my G2 but the G3 was a dog and it's going to take some convincing to give them another try. This one seemed a little gimmicky more than anything but if people have had good experiences then I'd but up for giving it a shot.

I don't have it myself but one of my best mates has been all over this since say one and trying to convince me to get it... He went G2, G3 and G5 missing out the G4 which other than the camera was bunk imo (and unfortunately the only Gseries phone I've owned ha) at this price I would definitely say it's better value that the OnePlus 3, I'm damn tempted myself but know I don't need it!

With the reports LG have abandoned the modular system for the G6 its hard to consider the phone even though it's specs and overall design are very good. Doubt there will be any more "Friends" developed either which again is another disappointment. Good phone for those that like to carry an extra battery for emergencies though.

If the g5 had been this price a month ago I would have taken the plunge.

It was not this price and I'm glad I went for the one plus three. The cameras might not be as good but the OS is so much better and lacks the LG bloat. This is the only phone that seems as smooth as the Nexus 5 running kit kat.

I have had a g2, g4 and g5. g2 was great. g4 was fine until it started bootlooping. Took approx 2 weeks to repair and they replaced board in the mean time i upgraded to the g5. No problems at all with g5. Runs very smoothly and has great camera. gps seems to be poor but not overly fussed by that. Just a shame about the modules. I liked the idea of them but have not released any for a while and doesn't look like they will but all in all I love the phone and have had no problems so far...

Great price. I loved my G3 2 years ago when I got it. Now I hate the damn thing as even with just moderate usage it will drain the battery from 100% to zero in about 5 hours. If I'm out for the day, and plan to actually use the phone I always have to take two batteries. And don't even get me started on random Android OS downloads using most of my data allowance each month.

Sorry, but it's put me off LG's for life. Still planning to upgrade to S7 Edge.

Sweet. Thanks for that. For me the G2 was / is the sweet spot. Great battery life, nice 1080p screen, plenty powerful enough, great camera, and nice size (not the size of a laptop which seems to be becoming the norm these days). But 16gb isn't cutting the mustard these days and Android 5 is getting a bit old hat. I may've just found my next phone

G3 is a brilliant phone, I like it so much I haven't bothered upgrading (nothing it can't do and love the screen). The software was the only real problem in my opinion. Once rooted it flies!

To be honest LG have greatly improved with their software in the last year as well, but you want the best performance you need to root (true with any phone).
delusion
30 Oct 16 #42
Again thats definitely a software issue rather than hardware. My g3 lasts over a day with heavy use..

(try tracking what is using up the battery, or reading up on rooting and how it can help battery life)
mynameisthehulk
30 Oct 16 1 #43
Rooting should not be required to get decent performance out of a device. I am not willing to compromise functionality I require (Sky Go, Mobile Banking) in order to mod a phone to get it to perform the way it should. The G3 had terrible, inconsistent battery life and the laggyness of the UI was awful. Worst phone I have owned.
delusion
30 Oct 16 #44
All phones suffer from performance and battery problems eventually. I admit the g3 was unfortunate in that it had those issues from the start. But the hardware is solid!

If you know what you are doing you wouldn't compromise anything by rooting. It just gives you more control over the OS (allowing you to remove problem 'bloat' apps , tweaks system settings, and even update firmware to improve the battery performance). If that's not enough then you can go the custom rom route, there is a massive dev community for this model of phone!

Anyway just saying it's a good phone deep down, and battery life is excellent considering the quad HD screen.

30 Oct 16 #46
When you are spending £££s then is it not reasonable to expect the device to work out of the box?
delusion
30 Oct 16 #47
It's reasonable yes, but if you kept it, is it not reasonable to get the best out of it you can?

I'm just saying phones of that quality (flagship in its day) do have the performance needed if you take the time to tweak.

So don't give up on it yet and pay hundreds more for a replacement if you haven't already, doesn't hurt to read up on how much the performance could improve with rooting either - it's free to do so  ...

This is an amazing phone in its own right, the specs speak for themselves and there aren't many phones that trump it, I can only think of the Oneplus 3 with 6GB of RAM to the LG's 4GB, But it lacks the QHD screen of the LG.

It seemed to fall flat on its face for a coupe of reasons, firstly the modular aspect is pointless and poorly implemented.

Secondly, a few reviews are a bit dim and don't know the difference between metal build and metal finish, this upset them tremendously and they thought they'd unearthed the scandal of the century when they were able to scrape some paint off with a Stanley knife. The LG does not have a metal finish like the HTC's it has a paint finish on a metal body, Just like the black iPhones, only a bit more durable in my experience (at least the iPhone 5, not sure if they hard anodise them now)

Thirdly, I read all kinds of Quality horror stories on the internet, so went and had a look at a few G5's in local shops, the reality was I saw none of the suggested issues (Detachable part not lining up, Light bleed, Image retentions, visible antennas, sharp edges, overheating) and am guessing these problems were with the initial pre-release test units.

A combination of these three issues doomed the G5, I am kind of glad because it meant I picked one up cheap, Amazing specs, Amazing speaker (loud and excellent quality!) Amazing camera (Wide angle lens is so useful!) Sound quality through the earphones is awesome (24bit) even without the B&O attachment, and over BT aptX is supported.

Like I said, forget the modular aspect its crap - but for £336 this is one amazing phone.

I know how to root a phone, I choose not to as it limits functionality that I need and I do not have the time to be able to spend researching if it is possible to use my two online banking app and Sky Go if I unroot or use a certain ROM, I have a wife and a job and a business. The G3 went a long time ago - I got £200 for it second hand which tells you how quickly I shifted it. I can see why people were happy with it at £200 or less, but I paid £400+ for mine having loved the G2 and got a device that was not really fit for release.

30 Oct 16 #55
Did you have a look at flashing the rom or anything? Boot loop these days is pretty rare without a fix, try XDA forums.
delusion
30 Oct 16 #56
Rooting adds to functionality, it doesn't take it away. The only way it would prevent anything is if you changed to a rom that those apps do not support (Eg a different version of Android - depends on the app), or a rom that is not mature (ie contains some bugs). You don't have to change rom/OS at all and can stick with whats on there when you root if preferred.

Anyway I was only suggesting it's not a bad phone (mainly for the people that are still using one or or maybe people considering whether picking one up for under £150 is a better choice for them than paying over double that on a new model). I tried the moto g4 recently and that just wasn't as good and is roughly the same price range as an LG G3 can be found for.

I haven't tried the LG g4 or g5 but to be honest I have no reason to think they wouldnt be a great choice. But no matter what the phone (even the Nexus range for example), I find myself rooting them eventually, just personal preference as I enjoy getting as much as I can out of them.

It's fine if it's not right for you. Rooting gave new life to my G3, hopefully my comments might be useful to someone in the same boat. Just wanted to counter the comments suggesting its useless, as it's certainly not.

A shame you had a bad experience anyway...

I've had a G3 for 18 months, never had a single problems with it, perfectly fine battery life too. Skipped the G4 because not enough of an upgrade, been thinking about the G5 as camera is definitely an upgrade, but still not been enough of an upgrade over the G3 (particularly given it runs 6.1 just fine, and the mod community will soon have 7.0 ROMS up) at full price. However, at this price, and with a nice active modding community, this might be worth picking up.

You shouldn't have to root a phone. The phone should perform fine as it is. Besides, pretty sure that you do compromise something by rooting your phone. The warranty.
delusion
30 Oct 16 #61
How often do you use the camera? Might be worth checking that its not getting stuck running in the background after a single use or something like that? You could also try a different camera app and see if that makes any difference.

Worth monitoring your battery usage regularly to confirm the camera is causing it (sounds like a bug if so). You could try and work around it by installing an aggressive task killer app, such as one that closes all apps down when you turn the screen off.

Anyway if you feel confident enough to try rooting and changing rom just check the following link (though there are many easier to follow guides found with Google too) :

18 months ago I was trying to persuade my friends to get an LG. Really great phone, fantastic screen, brilliant camera. 12 months ago a bought a second battery thinking the original one was spent. It wasn't, just the phone draining the battery like crazy. Since then I've reset it to factory setting s a number of times, and installed every update, but it's made no difference.

I took it with me recently to the Manchester Games Expo. Took about a dozen photos between 10:00-15:00, sent about five texts, no surfing, nothing else. Down to 10% battery by about 16:00. Swapped batteries.

My friend took photos all day long on his iPhone 5, still at about 85% battery about 10pm that night.

I've thought about giving Marshmallow a wizz, but I'm still stock at the moment. One of the things I love about the G2 is the camera (have an iPhone 6s for work and I'd say it's better than that). One of the down sides to rooting and going custom is you don't get the official LG camera driver (no-ones been able to port it yet) and so apparently you loose quality. I shoud've bought a 32gb model in the first place as the phone is that good I don't think I'd be looking to upgrade (cloud based content is all well and good unless you live in Cornwall)!

30 Oct 16 #70
Boot loop is due to some sort of manufacturing fault. LG have admitted to it and there was someone who had a fix from LG to turn of the two fastest cores. I couldn't get that to work on my wifes phone sadly.
However as I bought it from Amazon I managed to send it back for a full refund of purchase price which was grand and bought the lg G5.
I am impressed with the G5 so far removable battery and micro sd . Nice little phone seems fast enough and hopefully gets many future OS updates. I personally find samsung a bit to bloated.

Would not touch oneplus as their customer support is terrible.

I tried to make it clear (highlighted above in bold), maybe it didn't come across that way.. My comments were meant to just show the g3 wasn't useless for everyone and is still a decent phone, I wasn't trying to suggest that rooting is the answer for everyone, just that it's a very good option.

There are ways around apps that check if you are rooted for those that are interested, but I would advise its for advanced users only (Eg rootcloak app).

The G5 has a better camera, larger screen, replacable battery, SD card support & UK warranty as advantages compared to the Mi5.

Unsurprisingly the G5's gimmicky friends modules and plain looks did not make for a sales success. But it's really a great phone and a bargain at this price. I would also say that it's outclasses the OnePlus 3 at essentially the same price.

Is your 2nd battery a genuine one?
Do you mean you clear your apps' cache every time you use them?
Do you have the facebook/messenger app installed?
Is your phone always warm or hot to the touch?
Do you ever see the GPS icon in the notification area even when NOT using a navigation app?
What network are you on and do you live/work in a poor reception area?

Grey imports are not covered by LG UK so all warranty claims will probably need to be handled by the seller. Also you can't use the uSD slot in dual SIM mode.

Did you get it repaired?

I bought 2 last year. The 2nd one bought a few weeks after the first had to be repaired after maybe 8 months. The first lasted 11 months. The first return was picked up from me and the courier packaged it. The second return had to be dropped off at lockers, packaging was in the locker and was picked up a couple weeks later (repaired) from the same set of lockers.

Not ideal but they were only around £280 if I remember correctly. If you've an old phone to back to during the repair then it's not too much hassle.

Did you have the 2GB RAM 16GB storage model or the 3GB 32GB version? There seem to be a few people here who didn't have good experiences with their G3 but my 3GB 32GB was fine. I'd probably still be using it now over the G4 (pretty much the same phone just in a bigger case) if I hadn't broken it beyond repair.

If anyone has some easy peasy to follow guides on installing Cyanagenmod on the G3 please can you post it up.

I sent LG my G4 because of boot loop and they sent me a G5 for free as they no longer did the G4.

Had the LG G3 that had bad motherboard after 18 months. My LG registration stated 12 month warranty, but when I contacted LG they said it was 2 years, I wasn't arguing! So in all fairness to LG they fitted a new motherboard (albeit took over 2 weeks to sort it) then flogged it recently for £140 on Gums. Now got the LG G5 and love it. £412 from Argos with the music module thrown in, sold that for £60 on Gums. So effectively £352. So this a good price. Have some heat. did consider the OnePlus3 at £329, but like having removable battery & expandable memory, so opted for the G5. Time will tell if it lasts 2 years!
yes, goes to 80% in less than half an hour. My power bank has now become all but redundant! great feature. Also love how you can turn the screen to B&W when out and about to save battery power.

My Vodafone G4 bootlooped after I unlocked it for my three sim via eBay. fixed returned and it's been reset back to bloody Vodafone, phoned LG and they said I would need official Vodafone code that I used to unlock it for me which I don't have.......... Anyone else had this problem?

Great phone, fantastic camera and super fast. It has the option for dealing batteries if I want to at some stage. Pricing vs Samsung and HTC made this a no-brainer for me. i have not regretted getting this phone and I use it a lot. I really haven't come across any big issues yet. Great value tier 1 phone with associated support. I don't see a downside for phone if I never install any of the friends, mine has been in Spigen case from day 1.

Yes they are if you buy the phone without any contract. if you buy it sim free you dont get the free headphones and speaker though.

I just want to tell any LG G4 owners that are experiencing battery drain issues to download the V20i firmware from xda. It greatly improved performance and battery life for me. I used the V20i France software which doesn't have carrier branding.

When you consider the LG G4 droppepd to £230 I am sure this phone will do the same in the next few weeks. For £300 I would buy in a heartbeat. I've got LG and Samsung and I find LG far snappier with less bloat. I'm back using a Note 4 and the lag and bloat is frustrating to say the least and camera not a patch on the G4. Will be getting the G5 in due course.

I have a G5. My only complaint is the fingerprint sensor stopped working after a few months. I never returned the phone because it's not that big of a hassle. A factory reset could well fix it but I've got a ton of music on the internal memory and I can't be bothered with the hassle of putting the music back on after a wipe.

I used the LG drop locker return service. works fine but you will be without the phone for a week to ten days. But same thing with HTC in the past.

Could put ya music on micro sd card, then do factory reset. Do love the fingerprint option. Finger prints crossed i have more luck with mine!
