By the end of 2017, LEGO will be able to sell you ANY retired set within 30 days on demand. They want to combat the resellers which are a big problem for LEGO. "LEGO Again" will be opening an eBay shop next Spring and they'll charge a 10% fee over what current RRP would be for ANY set you want. The UCS Millennium Falcon will be available from next May for £429.99. If you have big retired sets, I'd dump them now if I were you! The source is me as I used to work for them!
This should be expired ? nothing in stock anywhere near me. Does anyone see it in stock anywhere ?

Not to mention licencing cots to the film makers - Lego will be doing well to be paying less than £20 per box sold for the licence.

I like these comments where apparently everything only costs a few pounds to make and then it's all profit. First off I seriously doubt that this set cost only "a few quid" to make, then it's all the other costs involved, the product development, the staff, shipping etc. No one should look at products and the base cost of materials.
Lego make a good profit, Toys R Us make a good profit too. But it's rubbish to think that there is a £200+ profit being made here. It's expensive but a lot of toys are now, just look at those robots that don't do much and cost £300+.
Lepin are probably making a higher profit, by using cheaper materials, no development costs (as they steal everything) etc. £100 for a counterfeit seems expensive.

I won't go into too much detail on my expenditure into the Lego world but let's just say I could possibly buy a reasonably priced car with the money if sold...
I personally build and display my sets.. I do have a LOT of sealed sets but thats because space in the house is scarce. One day the sets will be built. Id rather buy them now at affordable rates rather than wait 5 years and pay 5x the value.
EDIT/
Also this deal is smoking hot!! This is one of my all time favorite Lego builds!!

If collecting to sell on, they won't even open the box.
If collecting for personal use, likely build/display and keep the boxes pristine as well.

Can anyone ask a questions that i have thought of, do people that collect these sets just keep them as they were bought in there boxes, and the bags of bricks sealed, or do they build them up.
I loved lego/technics growing up, and would probably still like building them today, but once I had built it i would be finished with it, no ore use. I think a lego rental company would be a good idea.

Personally I have no issue with Lepin products (apart from them being what is basically counterfeit).
I would say however that you shouldn't mock what you haven't tried, the quality for the most part is actually quite good. Especially for at least half the price.

16 Oct 16#84
Good point I guess. Still reckon an Xbox is better value. If l buy the kids an Xbox and I don't let them open it or break the seal that'll be worth a lot in ...about 35 years!

16 Oct 16#83
Had a little look on Wikipedia did we? I'm not sure which patents 'expired' in 1989 or what Wikipedia is referring to but they have to have patents -every company does- or another manufacturer would do the same thing, with the same type of plastic and call it 'Legoo' or something.
My point is simply that it's over-priced. Which actually IS 'the case'. It's £220! ...er, think I'll buy the kids an Xbox or a bike or something for that price instead of a little house with a few figures.

Lego is a good product. However, this stuff is just plastic and costs nothing more than a few quid to make, yet they sell it for many times what it cost to make. Utter greed from the makers.

That maplin guy is taking poo, once Lego sets are retired that's it, end of. They will not pay to run and have a full factory full of machines to make old sets for few customers. His saying that so people get selling and he gets to buy them retired sets cheap and sell it later for more. And I have no doubt his mentioned it in other places, probably has a blog too.

I agree it's expensive, but at least it'll be worth something (In some cases more) in a few years. Granted half the bits might be missing  My house is full of toys that were expensive new and are now worthless. Lego generally holds some value.
Would you have paid over £200 for the Lego cafe corner, or the green grocers? I know I would have
Edit : Market street cost 90 dollars in 07, now woth over 1000 dollars . To be fair though, modulars are more for the big kids, and worth a lot more sealed/new

16 Oct 16#69
Lego RELIES on the "lazy investors" who buy sets to put away long term, hoping they will go up. They do go up, but only because the sets put away, are almost never put up for sale. The quantity of sets curently stashed away, not least in the UK, is staggering, and if revealed, would put most collectors off Lego.
In recent years, Lego has raised prices, because of the demand, but most large retailers have been struggling to sell Lego in quantities expected at the new prices, and have therefore offered regular price discounts.
le_jaeger
16 Oct 162#68
Interestingly that's not the case at all.
The last of Lego's parents expired in 1989! Anybody can copy it! It's just that all the companies that have tried (Mega Bloks anyone?!) make vastly inferior products.

16 Oct 16#63
Imagine dropping a grand for the Green grocer's on the bay and then it being announced they're releasing old sets, a lot of people would be ****. How much would you pity those investors? From a selfish point of view I can only hope it's true so I can get some of those retired modulars at a reasonable price. I've a few, but only one has retired.
Want that town hall, fire brigade, green grocers (A genuine one). Will they do it? Don't see it. You think staff/designers are going to wipe the value off their personal collections?

LEPIN are the Chinese company that make the Lego knockoffs. Doing an eBay store sounds a lot like LEPIN doing this and not Lego (as they would do it through their own website). I reckon this is another LEPIN trick (and perhaps you are their PR person?).

Mhmm so you order a retired £10 set that happens to have a uniquely printed mini fig or tile that wont be in their current stocks and they set up an entire production run with all the associated manufacturing, setup and staffing costs to make one piece and then sell the set to you for just 10% extra?

Need to setup a reminder as if not on ebay by then doubt the rest. I personally cant see why Lego would do this as manufacturing costs would be large for a small run and they lose the investors. I think there real issue is the chinese copies they need to combat.

it's different with lego though. As the sets that do get resold are retired sets therefore they are not making them anyways. But if they keep them going, they will lose the investors therefore when they sell it originally they will not sell through their stock as they will be left with enthusiastic lego builders only.

Genuinely hope this is true. There are plenty of classic sets that I would love to buy. I refuse to pay stupid prices from ebay. If it does happen I wonder if it will be just brown boxes and parts and a manual. Time will tell. I can see why lego lose out with resellers. Same reason Sony wanted to have online only sales and no second hand market. You control it then

not doubting you, but why is it a problem for lego? people buying to stock pile and resell means lego gets through their stock quicker hence better sales. If they were to stop this people will not stock pile the stock and lego will be left with more stock as the investors will walk away
