Normally O2 will unlock for free to Contract customers. So find someone you know and ask them to get a code. There is a form somewhere to request it.

It'll be locked and they charge £15 to unlock it - think they will only unlock after 12 months on payg - can get it unlocked on eBay though
It is refresh deal means you had to take contract.

What year is this phone? 2013? Even though its cheap, (by iphone standards,) I think its poor value as its support will soon expire.
Even though its double the cost, for me, the iphone SE is much better value as it will get more than double the amount of support from apple.
Of course, if you look out of the i-field, for £140, there are plenty of phones that will perform better and last longer.

If you choose perfect 16gb it is only £139.99 too. In my experience the 'perfect' handsets are brand new refurbs - new shell and screen.

New in September 2013 - but this is Apple and not Android!!! Support for the 5s is likely to continue until at least late-2018.
Yes the 6SE has a better camera, Apple Pay and a more powerful CPU but this is pretty good value at under half the price!

Stupid policy - as it makes O2 one of the worst providers to get unlocked from at the minute!
Of course there is a trick. If you can find a friend on an O2 Contract they can apply for an unlock - giving your phone's detail - immediately.

Hi decided to get a Samsung S7 through O2, and although the phone looked great, I haven't been able to use it as O2 haven't been able to unlock it. I've been chasing O2 for over 3 weeks, having spent over 5hours on the phone to customer Services and 4 visits to there stores, and advised them many times the code they have provided does not work, yet every time we go in circles and they keep providing the same code, and keep having the same conversations. I don't believe anyone at O2 has an IQ above 5. So be warned, from personal experience,
it's a lot of hassle.

it was the perfect one I bought, but you had to select an air time package, then you had to tick a box before you buy the phone saying something about activating the sim, didn't read all the message  don't mind paying for one month then cancelling if need be.

O2 refresh £168
Compared to £245 ish pay and go
Sign up for phone in store... Takes no more than 5 mins .
Then Phone up customer support and pay outstanding balance in one go.
You then affectively have a pay and go phone for £70 less.

Perhaps unlikely to work in all cases. Ones from CarphoneWarehouse are arranged to do this BUT, when I had a Vodafone supplied contract iPhone it was locked to that network from its arrival. Most probably most O2 ones may be as well.

BrianM
28 Oct 16#81
Yes this is 100% true BUT if you do buy an "auto locking" iPhone it WILL lock itself to the 3 SIM (or ANY SIM in fact)! 3 will then unlock for free (as they would not have locked it!)
If you put in a 3 SIM and the phone turns out unlocked that isn't to do with 3 - the phone was not locked to start with!
Seems to vary as to who you ask. I am with 3 and recently bought an iPhone. I was thinking of getting it from CPW but there was a thread or two on Macrumors from people who had done that and the phone locked to 3. No biggie as 3 unlock for free, right?
However, 3 only does that for phones it supplies. If it cannot find the IMEI on its server, it cannot send the request to Apple's servers to unlock. He was having a mare as 3 couldn't do anything and passed him onto Apple, who passed him back to 3 who passed him onto CPW, who cannot unlock anything, He was left trying to find a hacker on eBay who could do it. O2 normally supplies pre-locked iPhones. It really depends where O2 sourced these phones from as to how they will behave on activation.
From 3's T&Cs: "If you’ve recently bought or upgraded an iPhone from Three, it'll be unlocked as soon as you activate it over Wi-Fi or connect it to iTunes on your computer."
Nothing about 3rd party purchases. I checked with Three and got contradictory and inconclusive advice from the call centre drones.

If you're on Pay As You Go, your O2 phone can be unlocked 12 months after you bought it. It’ll cost you £15, which we'll deduct from your airtime balance. This policy might vary depending on which phone you’ve bought.
