Headline offer looks good but need to read the terms to see if you are eligible, point 1 specifically
1. Eligibility. The TripAdvisor app £40 Amazon.co.uk Gift Card will be fulfilled only to TripAdvisor users for stays according to all the following guidelines listed below.
• Only users who have previously booked a hotel on TripAdvisor through "Book on TripAdvisor". Previous booking(s) must have been made with the same email address used for the booking qualifying for the TripAdvisor app £40 Amazon.co.uk offer. 1st time bookings do not qualify for the TripAdvisor app £40 Amazon.co.uk offer.
• In order for the booking to qualify for the TripAdvisor app £40 Amazon.co.uk Gift Card promotion, the booking must be made between 28 September 2016 and 30 November 2016 on the TripAdvisor mobile app with travel dates before 30 November 2016. Only bookings valued at £100 GBP or more (before taxes and fees) will be eligible for this promotion.
• Booking must be made through "Book on TripAdvisor" on the TripAdvisor mobile app, for iOS or Android. This gift card cannot be earned for hotel stays at any hotels or properties owned, operated, or affiliated with Marriott and its associated brands. The list of hotels that qualify for inclusion in this promotion is subject to change at any time. In addition, bookings made using Book on TripAdvisor through LateRoom.com, EasytoBookHotelsIB, BudgetPlaces1 or any of their affiliates or affiliated websites are not eligible for this offer.
• The booking must be made with a valid UK address (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland).
• The user cannot cancel their hotel stay.
• The user must write and submit a new review of that hotel stay on TripAdvisor, which meets the site's review guidelines, before 30 November 2016. The review must be submitted with the same email address account used to make the booking.
If a person books more than one (1) eligible hotel directly on the TripAdvisor mobile app using "Book on TripAdvisor" during the entry period, the individual will only receive one (1) code. Whichever eligible stay and review are confirmed first, this will be the stay that will be eligible for the Amazon.co.uk Gift Card. This offer cannot be combined with any other offer or promotion from TripAdvisor, even if a single booking might otherwise qualify for multiple offers or promotions. If a single booking made on TripAdvisor and published TripAdvisor review qualifies for multiple offers or promotions hereunder, TripAdvisor will apply the qualifying offer of higher value.
All eligibility is subject to all federal, state and local laws and regulations of the United Kingdom. The Sponsor's database clock will be the timekeeper for this Promotion.

Don't worry too much about it, a lot of people I know have stopped using TripAdvisor or take the reviews with a big grain of salt. So many reviewers with axes to grind, no taste, bizarre expectations etc. After a while you realise that the high rated places are all quite similar and many fantastic businesses get middling to poor reviews because they dare to be a bit different.

To hell with TripAdvisor. Had nothing but 4-5 star reviews on a consistent basis for my business on there for well over the year and a half it's been open for and I'm still yet to receive my certificate of excellence. TripAdvisor is a joke. Probably ruins more businesses than it helps.

It says that you get the voucher for a second booking. It doesn't say when the first booking should have been, or for what amount, so you might be able to make your first booking now, and then get the voucher on a second booking.
I'll think stick with Quidco (6-8% cashback) and hotels.com rewards (1 night in 10 free) for simplicity, but it might be worth doing 2 bookings if you can get this voucher

Just a bit of a warning about trip advisors guarantee.
we went to france and booked through trip advisors holiday lettings, while the holiday in general was great to make any claim, you must NOT! stay at all in the property booked and contact them straight away, which is ridiculous, what the hell are you supposed to do with 3 kids and a 10 hour drive down to France.
they wont even entertain any claims of any sorts if you use the booking even for 5 minutes. 100% take travel insurance out!
our claim was based on the property stating it had a pool and when we arrived it was a hot tub, like I say we were expected to give up the entire holiday and return home to make a claim.
According to their T&Cs, you need to notify them of the differences in the first day (reasonable request) and vacate by midnight on the day of check-in (unreasonable imo, but everyone's circumstances are different).
I suppose they expect you to find alternative accommodation if 'the property is misrepresented (differing substantially to what was advertised)' and you're not happy with it. Also, I doubt any travel insurance would cover this particular scenario either.

I did misread your post, sorry. I am fairly sure however that the first booking also has to be >£100 as they did a £20 amazon voucher with every booking too, but that also had to be a booking >£100.

Still waiting for my voucher from when we booked and stayed in July, so don't hold your breath in getting it any time soon!

Perhaps you misunderstood; as only people who have booked before are eligible, to become eligible for could a cheap booking be made, then the "second" one be the £100+ booking?

How do TripAdvisor compare price wise compared to other major travel price comparison sites??

Good spot Chanchi. Title is very misleading then.

could it work, booking a cheap £5 hotel in some random remote place in the world first then booking the second to qualify?

Sadly not, bookings need to be for a minimum of £100 - "Only bookings valued at £100 GBP or more (before taxes and fees) will be eligible for this promotion." in the T&C.
