Mate.. I completely agree with you.. totally on your side.. but it happened to me.. and you say a challenge doesnt hold up in court.. So what I would say to that, rather than just saying it does... google Virgin East Coast Rail overcharged and reviews.. its amazing how much its occurred and how little it is regulated by the gov...yet.. here i am.. agreeing with you.. and still knowing the issue exists. ps.. i think everything to do with scottish law is better than english.. ahh scotland.. *thinks of the highlands*

Only if you travel pleb class, nobody should travel pleb class, and honestly I wouldn't compare a flight to a standard class rail journey given you only have to sit in the crappy seat for 50 minutes on the plane.

8 Oct 16 #141
You get a return here for 30 quid, you said you typically pay 60 quid. So it's half the price to go by train.

8 Oct 16 1 #140
Yes that would be a return trip two singles at 30 is one return.

They can't actually prevent you from leaving the station(which would be illegal even if the BTP tried it), it's one of those things that's as far as I know never been challenged in court because the rail companies always waive the penalty if anyone makes an issue. It's frankly something they are desperate to never have tested because a court would certainly throw out the part of the contract that they use to justify it as illegal, even if technically their interpretation of a break in journey is very liberal as how it was originally intended as it was to stop you getting off and back on the train at different times not leaving the train early. It's basically a money grab and they get away with it because of the weird way the trains regulation work.

Frankly the "cost of flexibility" excuse is ****, we all know it, and frankly I vote with my wallet and choose not to use trains even though I want to. It's an entirely unjustifiable stance by the train operators and always has been, there excuses have always been weak and only get weaker.
Also Scotland has a different set of laws, which is why the tickets are so expensive in the event of any errors. If you were on a connecting service you definitely can get on and off early as Scotrail doesn't penalise you for getting off early.

8 Oct 16 #137
Yes it is, as a regular London to Edinburgh traveller I can't think of any time I've paid more than 60 quid for the return in two years. Not to mention if it's a domestic flight and the airport has the latest security layout(like Edinburgh does) your time in the airport is a lot less. Getting into London isn't hard either, Standsted express into liverpool street or the Heathrow Express. I've done the round trip door to door in less than 4 hours on more than a few occasions.

ordered today, perfect timing, thank you so much to the poster of this deal, literally just a few days before i needed a one way back up from London and £15 is such a good deal.

I could have chosen any train almost on any day the whole of next week except Sunday, so there's still a large amount of tickets available.

That is incorrect. You must start AND finish at any of the Scottish towns/cities mentioned in the terms and conditions and London. I know, cos I was unfortunate enough to get told by virgin rail to go buy a new ticket.. which on the day... costs more than a fine so ...

Here is a frequent edin-lon commuter tip for you, if you are travelling light and don't mind a brisk short walk: follow the signs to car hire building, walk through it, across the parking lot and out the gate at the far end, past the Hilton and look for the Ingleston Park and Ride car park on your left (it's shielded by shrubbery, almost like they are discouraging you from doing this...).

There is a tram stop at the P&R (you will see it's about 100 yards up from the airport stop). A tram ticket from here (paid in cash) is only £1.60 to the city centre - the cheapest possible trip.

6 Oct 16 #112
The offer is valid to/from any of the 10 stops on the line. You just have to either start or end at either London or edinburgh.

35 goes from the stance behind the express bus. When you come through arrivals, exit airport to the right of M&S / WHSmith and then turn right once outside. Express bus immediately in front of you, <100yds further it's the 35.

It takes over an hour to city centre, usually not too busy a bus but does go through some of edinburgh's more deprived areas.

If ticket inspectors do a sweep after every station on the route, then surely they will know you got on at that previous stop and not from the start of the journey. They tend not to miss anyone, even waiting for people to exit WC's.

chenzz
5 Oct 16 #71
Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I'll have to try to break the T&C.
Assuming as long as you are connecting to other train services at the intermediate train station you get on/off, there is no way the ticket inspector could stop you.

dunkertruck
5 Oct 16 2 #69
and then you still have to get from Edinburgh airport into the city centre, which is another 30 minutes you'll have to add on.

So first of all you have to get to London City airport, check-in, get on flight, fly for 1hr 30ish mins to an airport which is still 30 mins away from city centre. Skyscanner showed the cheapest flights as £139 return in November, add in the cost of the 30 minute transfer into Edinburgh and that amazing time saving of 1 hour compared to a train which cost £30 return doesnt seem worth it to me.

It's a 'deal' website remember.

5 Oct 16 2 #68
Bottom of offer page:
"No other offers, vouchers or discounts can be applied, including Railcards or child discounts. No changes, no refunds and no break of journey permitted."

5 Oct 16 #64
u would have to pay me to go to London
UncleWilly
5 Oct 16 #63
Sheffield isn't on the Virgin East Coast route! The only way you could make that journey using this offer without breaking the t&cs would be to get a separate ticket from Sheffield to London to connect with the London Kings Cross to Edinburgh ticket you're reserved on, which would take much longer and probably cost you more than a direct Sheffield to Edinburgh ticket.
chenzz
5 Oct 16 1 #62
As no one answered my question, i did some research:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/documents/content/NRCOC.pdf

C. USE OF TICKETS
16. Starting, breaking or ending a journey at intermediate stations
You may start, or break and resume, a journey (in either direction in the case of a return
ticket) at any intermediate station, as long as the ticket you hold is valid for the trains you
want to use. You may also end your journey (in either direction in the case of a return
ticket) before the destination shown on the ticket. However, these rights may not apply to
some types of tickets for which a break of journey is prohibited, in which case the Ticket
Seller must make this clear when you buy your ticket.

We should be allowed to take the train from the intermediate station, as long as it's exactly the same train you have ticket for.

on the confirmation email, it's only mentioned as

Key Terms and Conditions: Valid on chosen Virgin Trains East Coast service only. Non refundable. Non Changeable.

It's easy to get round it, say you chose the London to Edinburgh ticket but want to get on at Leeds, just but an extra cheapest ticket from Leeds to the next stop. That will get you to the platforms then use main ticket for Edinburgh, you can do this at any station too of course

5 Oct 16 #58
How about coming by train from Sheffield to York, then catching the train from York to Edinburgh ?
chenzz
5 Oct 16 1 #57
I've bought two tickets from London to Edinburgh.
But I am based in Sheffield and my friend will leave from London.
I guess I could travel to York by train earlier that day and wait for him in York train station?
or is that against law as well?

All but one of the major stations on this route have ticket barriers and even the one that doesn't can enforce a manual ticket barrier at any time. But if you think breaking the law to save a few quid is worth the risk of a fine and possible criminal record then that's your choice....

Sit next to Jezzy Corbs ? I'd rather take the Royal Mail carriage in a sack on the floor snail mail speed than sit next to him on a seat, he's all gusto and no delivery - actually maybe Virgin Trains is too good for him, send him to RM carriage, he could renationalise it whilst he's there (more gusto, no delivery).

lol funny to see all the HUKD armchair lawyers out in force. If the train station has no ticket barriers, get off train and walk out the station. Nobody will stop you or even bat an eyelid. Just make sure you know whether the station has barriers or not.

Just keep in mind.. This is for travel between the two stations. You're not supposed to get on or off anywhere along the way.. not knowing this.. I had an instance where I had to buy a normal ticket as I was trying to get on at a station in between (even though it was stoping there). I wasn't breaking the trip... i just hadn't started it.
jinkssick to geremyfarr
5 Oct 16 #23
But if you can walk straight onto the train there is nothing that can be done to you. When inspector is on board you have a valid ticket to Edinburgh, full stop.
omgpleasespamme to geremyfarr
5 Oct 16 #37
I'm pretty sure it's a byelaw offence to purchase a ticket to or from a station you have no intention of visiting for this exact reason. This enables railway operators to run offers like cheap £5 tickets to the beach that commuters heading for closer suburbs can't take advantage of.

Byelaw offences are punishable by fines up to level 3 which I think is £1000 at the moment.
