Hi.
Fluoride forms fluorohydroxapatite which is more resistant to acid erosion than calcium hydroxyapatite, of which enamel is 96%.
It is not a constant supply, otherwise there'd be no need to keep using fluoride toothpaste would there? It is a topical application, and needs multiple and repeat application.
Fluoride is harmless in such small quantities. The benefits vastly outweigh any disadvantages.

Hello Mr Student, your next lesson is to understand the difference between 'remineralise' and 'replicate' because the latta is true concerning fluoride and serves as a constant supply there-after via the blood supply that flows through a living tooth.
The difference is key here, as a fluoride tooth has unlimited potential to poison the body.

Dentists recommend brushing with 1450ppm fluoride toothpaste. This remineralises enamel, making your teeth less resistant to decay.
Fluoride application is proven to be more effective at preventing caries than the action of brushing.
Fluoride in such low quantities in toothpaste is not harmful to health. Spit out after brushing and don't swallow it. Do not rinse either, as this removes the residual fluoride on the tooth surface which acts to harden your teeth.
Toothpaste without fluoride is useless.

always buy this - £2 a pop, have never heard of Mighty Pound, or indeed 'any cash and carry' - does that mean Costco?

The dose makes the poison.
All water naturally contains some fluoride. Formaldehyde is a carcinogenic toxin so why do we eat pears? A tablespoon of caffeine will kill you yet people drink tea and coffee. The tiny amount of fluoride in water isn't a health concern otherwise it would be removed.

My sister was using this abroad and was told that it was actually eroding her teeth. That and it's taste is definitely an acquired one.

I used nothing but this for years, always problems with gums and teeth, dentist eventually asked what I used and said it was worst paste on the market and to use a normal one, no issues since.

What are your reasons for your concern? 1 ppm per litre in 10% of the water supply is nothing, it's 0.07ppm in my area, so I don't see the issue with water. The fluoride in toothpaste is at a rate of 1000-1500ppm, this amount is probably recommended by multiple health and dental organisations worldwide for a pretty good reason.
